Dysto Disco EP
Cat: KMN 007. Rel: 10 Apr 25
Fabricio - "Collateral Effect" (6:43)
Charleze - "Rage Power" (6:55)
Wooka - "Tirty Dalk" (7:26)
Mooglee - "Things I Love" (6:25)
Review: Kommuna marks its tenth year of activity with this new dancefloor-focused record from various artists whose music "reflects the glimmer of hope that music provides during these dystopian times." Fabricio's 'Collateral Effect' opens with a strident nu-disco sound and retro-future chords that get you moving. Charleze's 'Rage Power' is another chunky disco stomper with some nice cosmic melody and Wooka's 'Tirty Dalk' hits harder with mechanical beats and churning bass. Mooglee's 'Things I Love' brings a more dreamy synth sound but still club-ready beats.

Love FXU (Sound Metaphors mix) (6:36)
Review: Lol Hammond is a former member of Spiral Tribe and early live techno act The Drum Club who now makes music on his own as Wah Wah Planet. Back in 1990 is when he penned this fantastic five track Balearic house EP alongside Russell Crone and with female vocal contributions from Lucy Sian. It very much lay out an early blueprint for UK street soul and the opener on the A-side 'Jewel' explores a romantic theme with hooky pop lyrics. Things get more left of centre on the 'Love FXU' with three trips into a smoother sound world perfect for sun kissed island dancing and with influences ranging from early breakbeat and trip hop to elements of dancehall music.

Feuerwerk Der Rhythmen (7:22)
Subcutaneous Dance (7:21)
Mehr Phett (Eden Burns remix) (4:59)
Review: Niklas Wandt is a Berlin-based man of many talents including drumming, singing, playing synth and percussion and DJing, as well as crafting delicious techno depths such as those on this latest EP from the fledgling Viscera Transmissions. Initially, 'Mehr Phett' veers towards hi-tek soul a la early Detroit with its surging pads and sleek percussion. 'Feuerwerk Der Rhythmen' is another quick and kinetic cut but one with great meaning in the musical synths. 'Subcutaneous Dance' then gets more wild and free with layers of synth pulses, scintillating drum programming and a driving bass line that will lead to dancefloor lift-off. Eden Burns remixes the opener into a tropical, dubby, elastic house workout with an off-balance bassline.

Rock The Nation
Rock The Nation (Kenny Jason remix)
Review: Long lost electro from 1985, Matt Warren went on to make many influential house cuts on the legendary Trax imprint. "Rock The Nation" set the foundations: crisp, funky and full of drum machine creativity, it's the type of electro jam that will have you popping uncontrollably. Kenny Jason's remix takes us down a dubbier, more spaced out route. 29 years old and still as affective now, this has aged particularly well.

Let No Man Jack (Maydays Rescued From Acetate edit)
Gene Hunt - "Sound Drome"
Review: Chicago house heaven here with two tracks from those mythological mid 80s nights at Ron Hardy's legendary club Muzic Box club. First up "Let No Man Jack" is explained by its 'rescued from acetate edit' subtitle. With pitched up diva vocals, brutal cuts and harsh drum machine track, it's a fast and raw stomper -just the way we like it. Gene Hunt's "Sound Drome" is a 13-minute monster which Hardy would have worked til the floor was sore. Rush Hour have dropped a sizeable hint that it'll be the first part of a retrospective telling the story of feted DJ Ron Hardy and the Chicago nightclub he presided over - 2013 can't come soon enough!

Waiting For Rob (Tim Schlockermann remix) (6:14)
Vimto Paradox (7:07)
Cap Snatching (5:26)
Review: Following on from Robert James' Revenge Of The Wasp 12" and a classy VA release, Body Movement is back with a new drop from Harry Wills. Wills has been building up a name for himself across a slew of releases on labels like Holding Hands, 2X, Lemak and Subsequent, and his sound is accomplished and engaging on this fresh batch of tracks. 'Waiting For Rob' is a warm and shimmering track that splits the difference between sharp tech house and fluttering melodic electro, which Tim Schlockermann then remixes into a low slung, broken beat mood that leans on the bass. 'Vimto Paradox' takes things into moodier territory with a broad sweep of keys spelling out an eerie mood around a minimal beat. 'Cap Snatching' finishes the EP off with a more overtly electro construction marked out with snappy acid flecks and a crisp 808-esque beat.

Review: Windsurfer's The Gone Village, from what we can tell, marks a debut release on Zurich outfit Phantom Island. It's a multi-genre record that draws on wave, synth and electro to make a new balearic sound perfect for gazing off into the distance. 'U Hell' is a mid tempo open with lavish chords and a busted bassline, while 'The Waves' manages to make future electro sound like an ancient ritual. The Kejeblos remix is perfect for back room club sets and 'We Live As A Dream' is an in trueing moment of innocence and calm. 'It's A Sony-Battery Love' is further proof that Windsurfer can really conjure up some fine emotions.

Messin’ With My Mind (Electric Press dub) (5:50)
Review: Ralph Lawson's legendary Leeds-based label 20/20 Vision is in the middle of celebrating 30 years in the game. Part of that now extends to this reissue of a record that played a huge part in establishing the imprint back in the day. It comes from the co-founders' production alias Wolf n Flow and though it was recorded more than 20 years ago, this record still bangs. 'Messin' With My Mind' is a perfect mix of squelchy tech and vocal loveliness that calls to mind early Fresh & Low. The Oliver.r dub is more sleek and blissed out and two Electric Press remixes close out with some late-night heft.

Review: Byrd Out Limited presents a remarkable find here in the form of previously unheard music from The Woodleigh Research Facility. The four-tracker captures the essence of chugging, acid-tinged electronica and offers a unique glimpse into the duo's creative journey. Recorded between 2016 and 2017, the tunes showcase their signature fusion of hypnotic grooves and experimental flair as the duo blends intricate electronic textures with a retro-futuristic edge. A vital pick-up that comes in limited pink vinyl.

12 Days Of Squirm
Lisa
808 Verb Talk
Pytch1
Review: The Worm burrows deep with this evocative new outing on Deep Cub label, which continues to turn plenty of heads before it has even got to release number 10. '12 Days Of Squirm' is dubby, mid tempo and slow motion techno for early evening warm ups. 'Lisa' brings a more cid laced and percolating sound to up the energy levels and '808 Verb Talk' is darker, more heavy, with bright acid leaving a menacing mood in its wake. 'Pytch1' is another deft and atmospheric wedge of slow, purposeful techno.

Review: Ruf Dug has long been one of the cultish followers of mysterious beat-maker and frequent Instagram poster Wu-Ki, an artist with zero previous releases but a vast archive of largely home-made music (much of which samples dusty old VHS tapes). The pair met by accident last year (or so Ruf Dug says - it could all be an entertaining tall tale) and a deal was thrashed out for the Mancunian producer to sign Wu-Ki to his reliable Ruf Kutz imprint. There's a definite 'child of the 80s and early 90s' vibe to proceedings - all fizzing, multi-coloured synth sounds, chopped-up house-not-house beats, stabbing TB-303 sounds, mutant boogie beats and layers of deliciously analogue fuzz. Set phasers to fun!

Review: Fusion Sequence is a new offshoot from the Mellophonia label that kicks off with a heavyweight release both literally - its 180g vinyl - and metaphorically. It features seven different artists offering up one track each on what is a widescreen exploration of fresh deep house. They are A Vision of Panorama, Eternal Love, Pool Boy, Wolfey, Laseech, Larry Quest and Jay Sound and between them everything from cuddly depths to more moody late-night deepness is covered on an EP that brings plenty of new perspectives. A fine inaugural 12", then.

Review: Charles Webster's 2020 album Decision Time, his first for decades, was widely praised for the depth, soulfulness and densely atmospheric of its hazy and tactile sound. Those with long memories pointed out that Webster has form in this regard, with the legendary British deep house producer taking a similar approach with his 2001 solo debut album, Born on the 24th July. That album was overlooked at the time, so it's fabulous to see it finally get reissued on vinyl. Shot through with woozy, soft-focus, ultra-deep soul, trip-hop and gorgeous downtempo beats, the set is not only immaculately produced and full of inventive instrumentation, but also boasts some seriously inspired guest vocals. It's genuinely an overlooked classic that deserves any belated attention it finally receives.

Rick & Calvin - "Memories Analia"
Orlando Voorn - "The Recipe"
K-Alexi - "Head Banger"
Review: Vibes New & Rare Music 2 reaches it's conclusion here as Rush Hour drop the second and final double vinyl helping of the Rick Wilhite curated compilation with a suitably high profile cast of contributors involved. If you checked Part One which dropped earlier this year, you'll know Wilhite has expanded the remit to include producers from Chicago and New York - and if you didn't check it what's wrong with you! Any compilation that starts with an exclusive cut from Moodymann is gonna be good, and the dusty, disjointed "Momma" sets the tone quality wise for what follows. The Godson himself delivers a thunderous, stripped back take on "A Matter of Honour" by Sean Tate and this dukes it out with the apocalyptic electro of DJ Stingray and the rugged beatdown of Orlando Voorn as our favourites from this great collection.

Review: There's going to be plenty of heat surrounding this mix-up from hot US DJ crews Wolf + Lamb and Soul Clap, and it's easy to see why. As commercially released DJ mixes go, it's exceptional. Packed with fresh material and refreshingly eclectic, it sprints between tracksboth upbeat and downtempo at a breathless pace. From sparse nocturnal house and Arp-heavy noughties boogie to dubbed-out grooves, space-age electro and sweeping cinematic instrumentals, this installment of "DJ Kicks" has it all. Hell, there's even a spot of pedal steel skank from Slow Hands. With a cultured, considered feel and all manner of unreleased audio delights from the Wolf + Lamb family, it's an outstanding hour of entertainment.

Review: The brotherly duo known as Woo's latest mini album is a rare, previously unreleased piece of music that takes you on a widescreen trip to the cosmos. It is a series of dynamic ambient electronic pieces that unfold with a sense of journeying narrative, nebulous synths and astral pads that active your brain as well as your body. It is soundtrack music for lovers and loners thanks to the fusion of contemplative moments and more romantic vibes, with cinematic references next to subtle dance floor joints. This might have been recorded way back in the 70s and 80s but still sounds utterly fresh today.
