Review: This driving old school Northern Soul gem from Larry Williams & Johnny Watson is a real favourite amongst the hardcore in that scene and an original copy will cost a few quid if you can find one. The infectious missile of the a-side was a key cut in the early days of the soul, mod and scooter scenes and all these years later is just as direct a hit of pleasure. Flip it over and you will find something just as effective in the form of the catchy and uptempo 'A Quitter Never Wins' 'which is as funky as Northern soul gets.

Review: During the "rare groove" boom in London during the 1980s, Linda Williams' 1979 album track "Elevate Our Minds" became something of an anthem. Curiously, it was never released as a single at the time, making this surprise 7" edition something of a bonus for those still searching for the track. It remains a fine song, with Williams' brilliant vocals rising above bossa-influenced beats, warm bass, luscious boogie orchestration and gentle Latin style horn lines. The flipside features "City Living", the title track from the very same 1979 LP that "Elevate Our Minds" was taken. It's far funkier and more elastic in feel, with horn arrangements and a chunky groove reminiscent of some Teena Marie tracks from the same period.

Review: Brought to you by Dynamite Cuts and The George Semper Music Archives, here we have a righteous stormer from 1969 fronted by the formidable Patti Williams. Recorded at Original Sound Record Hollywood, 'Do You Know' was originally intended for Williams' album which sadly never saw the light of day. This is the first time this track has made it out into the sunshine, and it's the kind of song which will become an evergreen classic up there with the likes of 'Hard To Handle' and 'Express Yourself'. It really is that strong a song, and it feels right to spin it on this sure shot 45, backed up by the instrumental for those who dig it.

Review: Dave Welding's Soul Junction label is back with another limited edition 45rpm that keeps up the fine run of recent form. These two gems are the work of the late great Willie Williams, a blind singer from Chicago who was discovered performing in the Windy City's local clubs. He was signed to ABC records in 1966 and put out only a couple of other well received singles. 'Give It All I Got' is a beautiful piece with raw drum work and lush vocal backing harmonies next to a gentle piano line. It is stirring stuff while the flips-side 'Do You Understand' is more upbeat with its funky riffs, more great backing vocals and a rolling beat that locks you in.

Willie Williams was one of many artists to feature on Soul Jazz's 'Studio One Soul' series, which documented the throughline between reggae and soul in Jamaica. 'No One Can Stop Us Now' is a dreamy and wall-of-soundy slice of goodness from the mournful crooner, documenting the Jamaican dub vocalist's master plan. The song is a paean for anti-populist motivation - despite the naysayers who sit and criticise, no-one's gonna stop us now.

Review: In 1978, famed Latin Jazz percussionist Willie Bobo released a promo-only 12 inch single featuring a special disco version of the now classic Always There taken from the Hell Of An Act To Follow album. Review: First featured on the 2014 album I Hope You'll Be Very Unhappy Without Me, 'Hit 'Em Like Ali' is one of the most infectious, energetic and riotous tracks in the slowly growing catalogue of Australian artist Chelsea Wilson. Something of an unheralded modern deep funk classic, it makes perfect sense that Spasibo Records has decided to give it a much-deserved single release. The track was co-produced by Cookin' On 3 Burners member Jake Mason and the heavyweight instrumental backing track - which is available for the first time on the flip - features many of Melbourne's finest funk musicians. 'It Only Happens When I Look at You' stands out as a feel-good, upbeat floor-filler showcasing Wilson's unparalleled soul vocals. Originally recorded by Aretha Franklin in 1975 for her album You, Jackie's more energetic rendition became a Northern Soul favourite. Released in the UK in 1977, it was Wilson's final 45 and never saw a U.S. release. It is hard to find an OG but this pressing on on-sided white label is a god way to add it to you collection.

Reissued by Mr Bongo, this track was a game-changer at the Shapes festival, transforming a snowy Alpine setting into a feel-good dancefloor. Originating from Studio Rio's 2014 release The Brazil Connection, the Grammy-winning Berman Brothers collaborated with Brazilian legends like Marcos Valle and Roberto Menescal. They used original multitracks to seamlessly blend Withers' soulful vocals with bossa nova rhythms. Joyful horns, a bouncing double bass, and Pretinho da Serrinha's cavaquinho playing create an end-of-night anthem that radiates warmth and positivity.

Review: Refreshingly percussive experimental editry from Richard Wolfhouse, whose debut release for Trule wouldn't convince us that this was the work of a newcomer for a second. The three untitleds that pepper this one all take their drum samples - of which there are many layered on top of one another - from various 1970s African percussion records. These come combined with OG synthesis from a modular rack, resulting in long, winding and multi-layered percussion workouts that we'd wager not every dancefloor cat can handle. Decidedly wonky and naturalistic, packed to the brim with instrumental references and niche percussions, and yet still respectful of its source material, we can only hope for more of the likes of this one.

Review: Italian labels Altrimenti and Quindi join forces again for a new gaggle of remixes. All three of the original singles are from Woo's 2022 album 'Paradise In Pimlico' but sound very different here. Joseph Tagliabue goes first and his psychedelic Evasione Totale remix of 'Cadenza D'Innocenza' is a long form mind melter with crunchy drums run through with myriad spaced out effects. Leeway then tackles 'Even More Notes' and brings some jazz innovations over a skeletal rhythm and 'Gold Star' gets remixed by by Other Lands and Linkwood into a lush melodic day dream that glows bright as the sun.
