World Famous
Cat: BLMS 012. Rel: 29 Jan 25
World Famous (feat 45Trio) (3:14)
Re Create #01 (3:39)
Review: Sometimes a record drops and you just know it's going to be hot. This is one of those records, an essential 7" from Bloom and Japanese talent DJ Koco aka Shimokita, who has been spinning 45s since 2011 and can juggle beats like Messi can juggle a ball. He is a favourite with the likes of Gilles Peterson and is likely to win many new fans with this one. 'World Famous (feat 45Trio)' is a gloriously jazzy, soulful sound with funk drum breaks and warm, organic percussive tumbling next to natty chords and a killer bassline. Add in the equally irresistible 'Re Create #01' on the flip and you have a sure-fire future classic, so do not sleep.

On The Run (2:32)
Loosey Lusy (1:27)
Funky Soul Brother (FSB demo version) (3:17)
Review: When it comes to new funk, it doesn't get much raunchier or weird than this. Packed with rhythmic rodomontade, DJ Koco Shimokit and Southpaw Chop - both from Japan - bring an adroit right and sinister left hand respectively to the art of vinyl flipping and sampling, staying true to the rule of primary sourcing: "always sample straight from the original wax." Though it's a moot point as to whether sample mileage should be legitimated as a concept in the same sense as food mileage is, we can see and hear the appeal, as this loopy chef-d'œuvre hears its samples chopped and braised to the crispest degree, sating even the most dulled of tastebuds, and letting no indelicacy past the noise gates. Side B offers a special treat for heads too: the demo version of the pair's debut single, 'Funky Soul Brother'.

Funky Soul Brother (DJ KOCO AKA Shimokita) & Southpaw Chop - "Kiwami" (3:15)
Southpaw Chop - "Chocolate Sunday" (3:18)
Review: DJ KOCO AKA Shimokita and Southpaw Chop join forces once more for a tidy new vinyl only 7" under their Funky Soul Brother alias for Southpaw Chop's eponymous label. 'Kiwami' is a raw funk tune with razor sharp hi hats over spy theme-like 60s synths and bi claps. It's brilliantly retro and filled with dance floor drama. On the reverse, Southpaw Chop goes it alone for 'Chocolate Sunday' which his a more deep cut and languid tune that lazes on drawn out funk riffs and cosmic synth explosions.

Sometimes It Rains (feat Kaivili) (5:24)
Rich Man Poor Man (feat ROB) (6:24)
Okere (feat Bade) (4:51)
Hold Me Tonight (feat Steve Monite) (5:57)
Review: The star-studded Sai Galaxy project returns, bringing together West African legends Steve Monite and Rob with multi-instrumentalist Simon Durrington, guitar maestro Alfred Bannerman, and Egypt 80 trumpet player Bade, for a second EP of vital Afro-disco and soul. Following up 2020's 'Get It As You Move' EP, the likes of 'Sometimes It Rains', the homonymous 'Okere', the truth-to-power 'Rich Man, Poor Man', and the live and swinging coda 'Hold Me Tonight' paint a multifaceted picture of a trio, equally as concerned with groove delivery as they are with narrative storytelling. Most emblematic of Sai Galaxy's approach is their inspiration by analog production techniques of similar Afro-soul albums from the 1970s and 80s, adding a modern touch informed by Simon Durrington's Digital Afrika project.

Review: Mongo Santamaria's 'Green Onions' here (a cover of the iconic Booker T standard) is a classic cut that showcases the legendary Cuban percussionist's mastery on the drums. First released in 1969 alongside the nighttime swayer 'In The Midnight Hour' , the single hears a funking reissue here that once more shines a blinding light on Santamaria's deft ability to blend originally American compositions with Latin rhythms and soul-jazz structures.

Track 1 (4:48)
Track 2 (5:12)
Review: Two popular tracks from the highly rated and MURO-curated compilation Diggin Victor: Deep Into The Vaults Of Japanese Fusion / AOR are now made available for the first time on their own standout 7". Originally released as a limited item at an anniversary event, these rare gems are magically escapist sounds that blend library music, jazz, soul and Balearic mindsets into a pair of tropical heaters. The Kumi Sasak A-side is a real melodic noodler with meandering bass and a whimsical, carefree spirit as it heads nowhere in particular in hypnotic fashion. Side-B has 'Kimono' by Tetsuo Sakurai, which is a more rhythmic sound with funky bass riffs and 80s broken beats and a lush vocal.

Come On Dance, Dance (Edited original version) (8:51)
Review: Unidisc's 40th anniversary series, which offers fresh editions of sought-after disco and boogie hits, each accompanied by a new remix, continues. This time, they've decided to revisit Saturday Night Band's 'Come On Dance, Dance', which first surfaced on legendary NYC label Prelude way back in 1978. The chosen remixer this time round is Z Records chief Dave Lee, in pure 'Remixed With Love' mode. His EP-opening 'Disco Mix' is a genuine bomb that expertly rearranges and re-EQs the Saturday Night Band's original mix - with the odd dash of delay here and there - in true Tom Moulton style. He also delivers an excitable, largely beat-free 'Reprise' mix and a tidy, dancefloor dub style 'Instrumental'. A lightly edited take on the 1978 original mix completes an excellent package.

Girl In The Streets (2:32)
Review: In 1969, Albina in the US underwent a pivotal transformation which saw the arrival of Black residents displaced by the Vanport floods. While a local Black economy thrived to start with, the neighbourhood eventually got neglected due to disinvestment by the city's elites but citizens didn't take it lying down and some of them formed Shades Of Brown, a group that emerged at the Albina Arts Center which was a haven for artists during civil unrest. With members from various musical acts, they found unity under leader Thara Memory who instilled discipline and required them to read and write music before performing. This EP, which is the group's sole record, embodies their camaraderie and the community's struggle against neglect across six raw-as-you-like funk cuts laden with emotion and narrative.

Jim Sharp - "Inner City" (3:45)
Nick Bike - "Inner City" (Power mix) (4:48)
Review: Jim Sharp & Nick Bike are two of Canada's finest beat makers and here they turn their attention to the legendary Marvin Gaye. His 'Inner City' from the timeless What's Going On album gets a modern update from Jim Sharp that retains the soulful vocal of the original but with new drums. They're crisp and tight but funky, and the bendy chords and melodic motifs flesh it out. On the reverse is a Power Mix by Nick Bike that ups the weight and stomp of the drums and layers in the wordless ad libs from the original to bring the soul.

Review: This record comes at a sad time, as Marlena Shaw passed away in January 2024, the New York born soul singer with her unmistakable voice leaving a long list of amazing credits and performances when she departed. This magnificent double 7" focuses on her early years in the late 1960s, work she did on the highly influential Cadet label just before she moved to Blue Note. 'California Soul', 'Liberation Conversation', 'Let's Wade In The Water' and 'Woman Of The Ghetto' are all soul classics by the late songbird, and all gathered togethere here into one unmissable EP.

Shitan (part 1) (3:09)
Shitan (part 2) (4:03)
Review: A near-mythical release from the Italian composer/bassist/karate don Pino Presti, Shitan was a one-off project in 1977. Slow, pensive, full of tension and loaded with detailed cinematic elements, it still sounds forward-thinking today. No surprises that the original 12"s regularly go for hundreds. Madly the long version never made it to the original 12" so this is the first time the full five minute version has been available. As if a repress wasn't enough reason to jump on this!

KuRoOBi Magic (3:39)
Review: City Pop-era Japanese girl group Shohjo-Tai's 1984 EP with Red Bus Project (an alternative alias for their then synth-loving production outfit, Redbus), 'Escape', has long been a favourite amongst crate diggers - hence this handy reissue courtesy of Sound Metaphors offshoot Thank You. While the artwork has been refreshed, all three original tracks appear in freshly remastered form. On side A you'll find 'Forever', a body-popping slab of 1984 electro featuring Shohjo-Tai rapping in English over bubbly drum machine beats, squelchy bass, 'Rockit'-esque sounds and periodic horn breaks. Turn to the flip for Antal favourite 'Electric City', a driving City Pop-meets-Italo-disco club track blessed with a heavy and metronomic bassline, and the electro-goes-jazz-funk brilliance of 'Ku.Ro.O.Bi.Magic'.

Magic (version) (6:13)
Review: Quintessential Brit funk from 1982; Side On was a one off project from three members of Freeez and Potion, and "Magic" was unfortunately, their only official release. Cited by the likes of Dam Funk as an influence, the raw funk oozing through the mix on both versions was ahead of its time and veering towards more of a proto house sound that kicks dancefloors like a mule. The standard vocal is much more focused on Rick Clarke's strong vocal while the version goes all out with full bass runs and the obligatory saxophone solo. Abracadabra... Reach out and grab this.

Review: Recorded in 1983, never released, forever the subject of hushed-toned disco and boogie collectors... Skytrane was the brainchild of boogie professor and studio scientist du jour Steve Mannen. And while no one knows why this never saw the official light of day, it's certainly been rescued and restored with care for this limited release. The production of this salubrious slap-bass / synth jam is enormous and Madeleine Davis's voice really shines over the groove. Unless you're playing the instrumental, of course, which is equally satisfying.

Review: Fools Gold serve up a mega limited 7" here that is pure dynamite for the club. It's a single from Small-town DJs featuring some big vocal work from the legendary Bootsy Collins. The bass is impossibly elastic and rubbery, bouncing about the mix with goey goodness. Add in slapping hits and big broken beat drums, withering sci-fi effects and some party-amping raps and you have a real crowd pleaser. The Adam Doubleyou & Nick Bike remix smooth things out and is a little bit more of a low slung funk sound.

"I'm Gonna Love You A Little More Babe" takes Barry White's 1973 baby maker to vibrant upbeat pastures with powerful swooning female harmonies. This Time (Smoove Multitrack rework) (4:39)
Review: Geordie one-man production line Smoove's Multitrack Reworks series consistently delivers the goods, with the popular funk, soul, breaks and disco DJ/producer dropping fine, Reflex style revisions of both classic cuts and lesser-celebrated gems. He begins volume ten by reworking Steely Dan's 'Peg', a cut beloved of hip-hop DJs thanks to its killer drum-break and use in De La Soul's 'Eye Know'. His version makes great use of the multi-track stems, teasing out the break and slowly building the instrumental elements before unleashing the vocals. It's a genuinely great rework, as you'd expect. Over on the flip, he gives 'Baby Be Mine', with its' crispy drums, glistening disco guitars and squelchy synth-bass, a similar treatment, before successfully chopping up a heavy, percussion-laden deep AOR soul number ('This Time').

The Temptations' 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone' gets a refreshing update with crisp drums, rich vocal harmonies, and majestic orchestral breakdowns. Blind Alley (Smoove Multitrack rework) (4:46)
Review: While the Reflex was the first to forge a career out of multi-track re-editing (which would have been called remixing back in the disco era, since you are rearranging using the original parts), plenty of producers have followed in his footsteps in recent times - not least popular disco and funk party-starter Smoove. Here he serves up a ninth instalment in his excellent 'Multitrack Reworks' series. On side A he does a stellar job in reinventing Depeche Mode's 'Enjoy The Silence' as a squelchy, synths-and-slap-bass sporting mid-tempo disco anthem, complete with spine-tingling vocal breakdowns. He opens side B with a stripped-back, dubbed-out take on Al Green classic 'Let's Stay Together', smartly emphasising the bittersweet beauty of the original version's orchestral accompaniment, before delivering a sweet, head-nodding take on the Emotions' 'Blind Alley'.

It was a lot to digest, so he's opted to pick six of the hottest joints and squeeze them onto this razor-sharp 7". Here they deliver a much-needed new pressing - albeit in limited numbers - of Sons of the Kingdom's most sought-after double A-side. The Israel-based American group - members of the "Black Hebrew" movement of the period - originally recorded and released the brilliant modern soul/deep soul fusion cuts 'Modernization' and 'Hey There' in 1978, though the artwork on this reissue takes more cues from the former song's 1980 reissue on K.O.G. This Four Flies Records' "45" boasts two of the most potent recordings from the soundtrack. On the A-side you'll find the movie's main theme, 'John Dalton Theme', a superb slab of zombified psych-funk laden with simmering horror strings, loose-limbed percussion solos, crunchy drum-breaks and toasty bass. He draws on disco and filter house in his own unique ways and never fails to cook up steamy cuts for sweaty clubs. This time out he is in edit mode and has carefully worked his magic on The Soul Searchers tune 'Ashley's Roachclip'. His version for this limited edition 7" via DFP Vaults has jazzy flutes leading the way over churning funk drums with plenty of guitar riffs adding some girt under busy trumpets. An original 7' edit is also included and is slightly less weighty in the low end.

Summer Jam (instrumental)
Review: Soul Direction has served up plenty of the best material by The Soul Surfers, who love everything from original funk to playful covers - one of which, their take on William DeVaughn's 'Be Thankful For What You Got' is particularly superb, and lands soon. This 7" features tunes the group prepared for an annual hip-hop festival called 'Yalta Summer Jam' and features one side primed and ready for the b-boy battles with its big breaks and bumping kicks, and a sunny and breezy flipside for whatever party plays out afterward.

Review: Star Creatures' latest release titled The Chicago Boogie Volume 2: This Love Will Last picks up where Attack of the Chicago Boogie Volume 1 left off, with Tim Zawada and Kool Hersh curating more selections of rare Chicago boogie tracks in collaboration with the Munster Boogie crew. Originally released last year, this reissue includes music written, produced, recorded and pressed proudly in The Windy City itself, with this vinyl edition featuring art from Ben Marcus based on versions of compliment cards and flyers from the scene in the 80s.

Let Me Do It (4:35)
Review: After a sterling run of 7" soul cuts last year, Cannonball get straight back to it with this supremely rare slice from Split Evolution. The Chicago group had some hits in the late 70s and early 80s, but this one slipped through the cracks. Dave Morley from Tesla Groove Records procured a test pressing of this original which had never enjoyed a wider release until now, as sister label Cannonball presses it up for widespread enjoyment. It's a powerful, beautifully rendered slice of soul from the easy-tempo funk of 'Bedroom Eyes' to pitch-perfect B-side 'Let Me Do It', and the ever-devoted soul community will be quick to snap this one up for sure.

Out Of The Ghetto (3:13)
Review: Starfire's 'Make The Most Of It' is a standout disco gem from 1976. The US band hailed from Richmond in Virgina and put out a couple of long players and handful of singles between 1976 and 1979. This is one of their most well known and most sought after tunes with its deep cut funk sounds, guttural vocals and glossy Rhodes chords all layering in the comic vibes. On the flip is another well-crafted tune in the form of 'Out Of The Ghetto' with its impassioned social commentary.

Feelin' It (alternative version) (2:20)
Review: Record Shack unearth two tunes from the vaults of Austrian public broadcasting institution ORF, available for the very first time on officially released 7" record. Pressed using only the strictest high-grade equipment, the flame of soul soprano Stefanie Vhynak's 'Feelin' It' is rekindled with a rejuvenative flair: the Viennese singer cut her teeth in the USA before her return to her birthplace, where she was discovered and subsequently enjoyed a longstanding career. Though her stint with the Austrian Broadcasting Company was short-lived, it could still be argued that Stefanie's rep of contributions to the broadcaster lie among her best. The exigency of radio is paramount to good songcraft, which is why there are two versions of 'Feelin' It' here; the first of which lays down the centrality of the song's lyrics via pared-backbeat and muted funk, and the latter pulling the pull ring on the sonic grenade, allowing a full-throttle vocal and instrumental amour to explode.

Review: This 7" is a reissue of one that first dropped back in July and soon sold out but with two extra cuts. It offered a rare chance to discover hidden gems from the Austrian Public Broadcasting Institution (ORF) vaults which were all vinyl debuts in summer. This gatefold double 7" kicks off with Stefanie & ORF Big Band's 'Compared to What,' a hard-hitting funk track featuring lo-fi vibes and powerful horns. The A-2 offers a subtly tweaked version, maintaining the same high energy. 'Feelin' It' then comes on the flipside with big brass leads, deep-cut drums and a stirring, emotive female vocal lead. A second alternative is also featured.

Apache (Ryuhei The Man edit) (4:02)
Review: Most know that the Incredible Bongo Band's cover of the Shadows' tune "Apache" was one of hip-hop's foundational records; fewer know Stepak Takraw's 2014 cover version, which re-imagined the instrumental favourite as an extra-percussive chunk of revivalist Afro-funk. Here the killer cut gets the reissue treatment, with the Japanese producer/musician's riotous and energy-packed take coming backed by a fresh re-edit from the Land of the Rising Sun's premier scalpel fiend, Ryuhei The Man. His version is naturally fantastic, emphasizing both the cover's more funk-rock-flavoured elements and the break-dance-friendly drum-breaks. It's a tidy alternative take on a must-have cover version.

Love Crazy
Review: For those with a keen knowledge of boogie, the Stevens Brothers' "Smoke & Fire" 7" has long been something of a "holy grail"; an obscure, hard-to-find private press release that's amongst the finest examples of the genre. Happily, the siblings behind the record have decided to do their own reissue, getting the title track - all rubbery slap-bass, winding synth solos and smooth, soulful vocals - and its' similarly inspired B-side, "Love Crazy", an official re-release. Both tracks have been given the re-master treatment, meaning that they pack an even greater punch. This is particularly evident on "Love Crazy", which benefits greatly from a stripped-back groove and alternate male and female vocals.

Review: If you've ever been to a rare groove party - or a soul and funk one, for that matter - there's a fair chance you'll have heard Tommy Stewart's 'Bump & Hustle Music'. The song first featured on the American artist's self-titled debut album in 1976, but later became an anthem on the London rare groove scene. It remains an infectious, feel-good, life-affirming treat, with addictive female vocals, twittering flute motifs and much-sampled horn riffs riding a languid, rolling groove. Over on the flip you'll find another fine track taken from the same album: the sweeping, string-laden disco sweetness that is 'Fulton County Line'.

Review: On the latest edition in the Colin Curtis Pressents series, a swathe of producers have given their takes on tracks from Bluey and Gilles Peterson's superb Brit-funk tribute album as Str4ta, Aspects. There's plenty to get the blood pumping throughout, not least a killer, EP-opening, delay-laden jazz-funk-goes-disco revision of 'Rhythm In Your Mind' courtesy of Nuovi Fratelli, who brilliantly extends the track to 12 glorious minutes. The EP also boasts two other takes on this track: a rubbery, organic house style version from Born74 and a slap bass-sporting, Latin-tinged jazz-funk revision by Steve Conry and Takashi Nakazoto. Rui Fradinho's liquid broken beat version of 'Dance Desire' is also superb, making this a near essential set of remixes.

Welcome To My World (5:11)
Review: Few soul labels are quite as good at sniffing out previously unreleased material as Family Groove Records. Their tireless digging frequently unearths hidden musical treasure such as these two tracks, which date from the earliest days of Louisiana outfit Superior Elevation. Both tracks were apparently recorded in 1879 at Sea-Saint in New Orleands, the near mythical studio owned by Allen Toussaint. First up is 'Freaky With You', a breathlessly energetic psychedelic disco romp laden with sweaty hand percussion, flash-fried vocals, rubbery slap bass and eyes-closed funk-rock guitar licks. In contrast, 'Welcome to My World' is a slow and seductive, two-step style modern soul number that's as sweet as it is loved-up.

Review: Supersound Latinayres Orkestra's 'Froasted Or Fried' is a barbarian track and one for the breakbeats-diggers out there. Not normally noted for its drumming, the track nevertheless contains a distinctively crisp drum recording courtesy of an unnamed orchestra member. Something between jazz, salsa and funk, the B-side is equally soul-clutching, with the lead vocals on the track 'Hot Pants I'm Cumin' going criminally uncredited, yet aweing the listener with its jaw-dropping performance.

Review: Here's a pleasant surprise: a fresh set of remixes of killer cuts from the back catalogue of Melbourne-based band Surprise Chef, whose hard-to-pigeonhole take on cinematic soul contains numerous nods to classic jazz-funk and Brit-funk jams. Masters at Work give their take on 'Crayfish Caper', first joining the dots between Afro-beat, jazz-funk and West London style bruk on the 'Nuyorican Broken' mix, before delivering two house-style revisions - the squelchy, synth-bass-propelled 'Masters at Work Mix' and the tougher, more percussive 'MAW Dub'. The EP's other interpretations come from Harvey Sutherland, whose 'Weird Flex 12" and 'Weird Flex' revisions of 'New Ferrari' add the band's jazz-funk instrumentation and spacey synths to a warming, off-kilter deep house groove.

First up is 'I Like It Like That,' making its vinyl debut after years of anticipation. We Can Make It If We Try (2:51)
Only One Can Win (3:01)
Review: This fine seven-inch single was the result of Ultra Vybe and HMV Japan asking notorious crate-digger DJ Muro to select some gems to reissue. He opted for two lesser-celebrated cuts from eight-piece "family soul" outfit the Sylvers, who scored a series of U.S chart hits in the mid-to-late '70s. The two tracks here, though, were taken from the group's first and second eponymous albums, which were released in 1972 and '73 respectively. With its' sweet vocals, bustling bassline, rising horns and proto hip-hop breaks, "We Can Make It If We Try" is not only a dancefloor soul gem but also surprisingly far-sighted. Turn to the flip for the more downtempo - but no less sweet - "Only One Can Win".
