Can - "Vitamin C" (Blackcash & Theo Thelonious Beats Gillepsie edit) (4:09)
Silver Apples - "Lovefingers" (Blackcash & Theo Thelonious Beats Gillepsie edit) (4:16)
Review: We're really loving the Galaxy Sound Co massive; the label invariably turns up with the heat required to make our heads turn. Their edits aren't just your regular edits, they're reworks of quality soul and funk gems from the creme-de-la-creme of diggers' bags. For instance, the present number nine in the series features Vitamin C's lo-fi jam reworked by Blackish and Theo Thelonious Beats Gillespie, and the result is something extra special - a driving groove to satisfy for than one sort of collector. On the flip, leftfield dance maestro Lovefingers has his "Mr Apples" tune turned into even more of an abstraction by Blackcash and TTBC himself; what you get is a singular slice of wavy psychedelia for the open-minded DJ. TIP!

Galaxy Vol 7: Thelonious Beats Gillespie Edits
Frankie Seay & The Soul Riders - "Soul Food" (Thelonious beat Gillespie edit) (4:34)
Lyn Christopher - "Take Me With You" (Thelonious beat Gillespie edit) (3:28)
Review: If edits are your game then the Galaxy Sound Co is certainly the name. Along other labels like Mukatisuku, these dudes know how to repackage lost and rare soul 7"s, and this new two-headed funk bullet from Thelonious Gillespie is just painfully on target. The first edit is of "Soul Food" by Frankie Seay & The Soul Riders, a moody, dusty percussion bomb brimming with breaks and a grainy guitar accompanied by fine brass waves. Lyn Christopher's "Take Me With You" is pruned and reshaped into a glorious soul ballad with a hard edge, and a driving rhythm led by gliding electronic guitars and an inimitable bassline. Fine work right here.

Jika Jika (4:17)
Jika Jika (The Odd Bits) (3:38)
Review: 'Jika Jika' is s super sassy version of Grandmaster Flash's iconic 'The Message'. This holy grail reissue from Vive La Musique has had a full remaster and features late, great South African artist Sipho Gumede in his 'Boogie Man' guise. For this one he worked alongside prolific 70s and 80s producer Greg Cutler with a Linn drum and Jupiter 4 synth recreating the famous basslines. Add in a mysterious rap vocal and you have a stone cold classic that will surely be well received in any setting. Flip it over for an extra jazzy synth version.

Cedric Im Brooks - "Mun Dun Go" (3:15)
Sound Dimension - "Heavy Rock" (2:56)
Review: Here's a killer reissue from the Soul Jazz archives which is finally getting a repress. It's hardly surprising when the reissue becomes as sought after as the holy grail original jam from 1970, a sublime instrumental anthem of soulful, skanking perfection with Cedric Im Brooks flexing his sax in glorious style over a beautifully rough n' ready rhythm. It was shortly after this recording was laid down Brooks went on to form The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari with Count Ossie, which tells you all you need to know about the heritage we're dealing with here.

Get Lucky (instrumental) (4:49)
Spacer (instrumental) (4:36)
Review: One very handy 7" single and two monumental disco instrumental edits surely destined to get butts waggling on any given dancefloor. The A-side is swept along by a propulsive funk guitar line, neatly switching from classic 70s lushness to 21st century robotics and vocodered vocals and back again, while the flip goes for a more soul-driven vibe, the tight drums and bass pairing polished off by some delicately applied Rhodes piano, definitely the glitterball cherry on top. DJ weaponry so deadly it should probably be outlawed by some international treaty.

Pick Up The Pieces (reissue)
Cat: BRZ45 019R. Rel: 20 Dec 24
Wilson Das Neves - "Pick Up The Pieces" (3:13)
Som Tres - "Tanga" (2:04)
Review: Mr Bongo restock a brilliant 7" in their signature Brazil 45s series. The nineteenth to grace it, this blue-starred slice of small wax shone a light on Wilson das Neves' brilliant cover of Average White Band's 'Pick Up The Pieces' on the A, as well as a Mr Bongo fave on the B, Som Tres' potent samba-funk overflow 'Tanga'. The former flexes the historic muscles of a mythic Brazilian percussionist and vibesman, lending fidgety soft feels to AWB's already lull-lifting concoction; then 'Tanga' contrasts to this sense of measuredness with pure animal verve, as Tres' calls out to his bandmates commandingly amid whirlwinds of piano and drums.

Review: 5 Borough Breaks always serves up the working DJ with the sort of vital tools they need to get beat loving floors jacked up and moving. Here a load more iconic of the ages are chawed up and spat out on a new two track 7 " that features none other than legendary MC KRS One as well as American champ Fat Joe and Sammy Nestico. 'Bronx Tale' goes first with a nice laid back beat, funky bass and some edgy breaks that build a vibe while the KRS One rhymes come hard. Golden Boys - "Segura Na Cintura Dela (O Gaviao)" (2:38)
Silvio Cesar - "Beco Sem Saida" (2:21)
Review: Mr Bongo's essential Brazil 45s series notches up release number 89 via a blast of heavy dancefloor pressure that touches on both Brazilian funk and samba-rock. On the A-side you'll find Golden Boys' 1975 gem 'Segura Na Cintura Dela (O Gaviao)', an irresistible slab of full-throttle, orchestra-sporting, Hammond-heavy samba-funk marked out by strong group vocals and some superb musical arrangements. Over on the flip you'll find another classic from the same producer (Milton Miranda), Silvio Cesar's 1971 carnival masterpiece 'Beco Sem Saida' - an infectious excursion that found fame in the 2000s when Drumagick sampled it on 'Sambarock'.

Review: Funkyjaws Music comes though with more of that lovely loose-limbed disco goodness that is never going to fail in energising a decent danc floor. Let's Dance Volume 4 is another various artists affair that launches with James Greenwood & Aniello's feel-good 'Look Of Love' which has it all - the sweet female vocal, the florid strings, the rolling bassline and big brass leads. Review: Another 5 Boroughs Breaks release means another gold standard hip-hop banger. This one is from
The High & Mighty duo who hailed from Phillie and were active in the nineties. Their 'Dirty Decibels' is a sleazy joint with prying bass and sliding drums that get under your skin. The rhymes flow smooth and the samples are sweet. Flip it over and you'll find where they come from - a rare library music tune by Simon Haseley called 'Hammerhead.' It's a 60s gem with harps, horns and serene strings that make for a luxuriant sound.

Review: Tunes Delivery is a sub-label of Scruscru's Scruniversa and now it enters into the world with a fantastic first offering in the form of this six-track various artists EP. 'Hotmood' opens up with the feel-good disco-funk of 'Just Tonight,' Scruscru keeps it real with 'Funky Flute' which is a nice languid instrumental and Frank Virgilio up the ante with some big horn-laced grooves. The flip side then comes on strong with three more brilliantly musical grooves that brim with catchy riffs and fresh disco-infused rhythms. A great start to what is sure to be a great label.

This series is all about re-edits and reworks of old and rare records from Scru's friends' collections and first off is 'Pela Internet', a brilliantly sunny and percussive Brazilian number with great instrumentals and steamy Portuguese vocals. Review: The good folks at Gamm pop up with another of their irresistible slices of feel good funk. This one takes what some people would say is one of the most significant rare groove tracks ever in Headhunter's 'God Make Me Funky' and get Opolopo to tweak it with his usual sense of elan. The results are deadly, full of funky bass and sample course you will well recognise. On the B-side Opolopo draws out the grooves and goes for a soulful house roller that reworks Sylvia St. James's downtempo groover 'Motherland' to perfection.

Review: Mr Bongo's crucial Brazil series hits a 94th volume here with vocal and instrumental group Os Carbonos from Sao Paulo. The band had a long and fruitful career that started in the 60s and ran on into the 80s. This offering is a tune from later on in their time and it is a prime slice of Brazilian boogie with funk drums, vamping chords and hip swinging claps all designed to bring the good ties and the sunny vibes. The bass-driven a-side is the one, but the flip from Sandra Sa is a special kind of sentimental soul sound.

How Superstitious (instrumental mix) (4:14)
Review: Limited white vinyl repress.DJ Soopasoul's last mash-up was an inspired affair that saw him perfectly fuse tracks by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB and the Beastie Boys. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip-hop classic 'How High' atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie's party-starting floor-heater 'Superstition'. It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonder-ful jam.

Here it is Japan's Dai San who comes back to the label with a second EP that finds him heading off on a jazzy escapade. "Zamba Zamba" adds more flavor and percussion to the already tropical groove, making it an ansolutely addictive rhythm to own and play out on the dancefloor! The Matasuna imprint have gone above and beyond with this reissue, however, as Voodoocuts gets an edit in - it becomes more dance-centric and beat-heavy compared to the original cut. Emilio Santiago's "Bananeira" is a rare groove anthem with a slinky, laid back arrangement and classic Brazilian use of language as a percussive tool. It features Italian artists Santucci and Castiglione taking one side each with their own lush jazz and library tinged instrumentals. Santucci goes first with 'Mediterraneo,' a turbulent brew of double bass and prominent horn work that whips up a real storm as the drums come crashing down like waves on rocks. Review: More from prolific re-editor Ryuhei The Man, who here offers up his interpretations of 'Ikunnyakana' by Japanese singer Anna Sato and Nautilus main man Toshiyuki Sasaki. On the A-side he delivers his edit of the pair's full vocal version, where Sato's expressive, impassioned vocals rise above a backing track rich in traditional stringed Japanese instrumentation, wristy funk style breakbeats and what sounds like delay-laden guitars. This genuinely unique musical fusion comes to the forefront on the flipside instrumental edit. As he did with the pair's three previous collaborative 45s, all of which were released simultaneously this week, experienced re-editor Ryuhei The Man is the, erm, man applying the magic dancefloor touch. First is 'My Sweet Polly' by The Scott Brothers, a late 60s dance tune inspired by Howard Scott's former girlfriend. The endlessly sampled, hugely powerful and perfectly funky "Revolution" remains almost as poignant and prophetic as it was the day it was penned. Review: Originally released back in 1968, Freddie Scott's "(You) Got What I Need" is a US soul staple that went on to be sampled by late '80s rapper and beat boxer Biz Markie on his breakout track "Just A Friend." Scott's track came some five years into a successful singing career and featured production from celebrated duo Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. It's paired up on this 7" with another track that was later popularised in hip hop, Ike & Tina Turner's "Get Nasty". O Primeiro Amor (2:32)
If Only (3:21)
Coisas (2:26)
O Dia E A Hora (2:51)
Review: Not to be confused with the Hazel Scott from USA, this Hazel Scott hailed from South Africa and recorded a couple of limited singles in the early 70s. Her self-titled four-track came out in 1973 on a Portugese label called Estudio, and it was pretty damned hard to come by. With notes of funk and a general swooning romanticism at its heart thanks to the arrangement from Izio Gross, this is a diggers delight finally brought back into the realms of accessibility thanks to a reissue via Groovie which keeps the original artwork intact.

John Scott - "Milky Way" (0:49)
John Scott - "Star Voyage" (0:44)
Tony Kinsey - "Kaleidoscope" (3:22)
Review: Back in the 60s and 70s, library music exploded as a genre. It saw plenty of talented musicians make extra cash by laying down endless instrumental grooves for use in TV, film and radio. The King Underground label is now digging into the vast vaults for a new series of releases of some of the finest sounds from the era. The first 45 features tracks considered to be 'dramatic' from John Scott and Tony Kinsey. Scott's 'Milky Way' opens up with cosmic chords and sweeping strings that take you to the stars while 'Star Voyage' has a more busy lead. Kinsey's 'Kaleidoscope' builds the tension with multiple movements from several instruments.

You're So Far Away (4:36)
You're So Far Away (The Nigel Lowis mix) (4:59)
Review: Izipho Soul and Rena Scott have had a long and fruitful relationship that continues with this new 7". It offers up two new takes on a classic tune from Scott which tells of 'the inevitable frustrations of a long distance love affair.' The original is a big soul number with plenty of golden synths and mid-tempo 80s drums that hark back to the heyday of r&b. On the flip is The Nigel Lowis mix of 'You're So Far Away' which strips away some of the noise and makes the track a deeper, smoother, more seductive soul jam with a rather familiar baseline.

Scrutinized Tune (4:20)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Edit master Scruscru rarely misses no matter what sounds he decides to put under his scalpel. For this one on his own superb Scruniversal label he turns his attention to the lush sound world of City Pop over in Japan. On one vital 12" the maestro cooks up six varied but equally vital sizzlers starting with the funky sounds and big brass of 'One For Xsuxsu' then taking in the blissed out disco and house beats of 'Kyoto Sunshine', jazzy keys of 'Horomi & Rikishi', funky bass twangs of 'Secret Dream' and jazz lunge excellence of 'Nippon Bossa' before 'Scrutinised Tune' closes out with brown beats and sunny chords. Scruperb stuff.

Justnique - "Elevator Music" (Scruscru remix) (4:15)
Review: A bumper package of six - count 'em - reworkings of disco grooves by Scruscru, offering a myriad of new takes on classic sounds. Beno, Bernardo Campos's 'Space Gruv' opens proceedings with a luxurious, soulful edge, while Tree Threes' 'Sunshine Miss' coasts along gracefully with more of a beefed up jazz house vibe. Manuel Kane's 'Disco Visions' throws more beautifully jazzy chord shapes and adds a devastating diva vocal for a proper peak time feel, Immersif's 'La Tournee Des Phares' employs more of a broken beat shuffle and 'Rebecca's Mystery Mood' by Punky Wash revolves around Latin beats and lilting guitar lines. Finally comes arguably the EP's jazziest moment of all, Justnique's 'Elevator Music', with some mighty impressive tinkling of the ivories. Authentic, gorgeous sounds overlaid on some sturdy 4/4 templates - pure DJ heaven.

Boss Of The Coast (5:20)
Frog Business (5:26)
Juicy Brass (5:48)
Lucky Piper (5:06)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: The very first vinyl release from Blur Records features eclectic, talented Russian DJ and producer Scruscru, dropping a quartet of funky disco tracks on his brand new EP entitled 'Boss Of The Coast'. The title track kicks proceedings off, a fluttering flute holding sway over a nicely retro disco/house hybrid groove, before 'Frog Business' drops the mood to a more relaxed, chilled tempo, with smooth pianos, vocal snippets and languid jazzy brass embellishing the beat. 'Juicy Brass' is the EP's proper brassfest, as well as being blessed with a bouncing bassline and percussive frills, before 'Lucky Piper' sees us off with its irresistible bassline, smooth guitar riffs and more of those jazz-inspired flutes. One for fans of the early Talking Loud or Acid Jazz releases, perhaps, although it's hard to imagine anyone with a penchant for cutting a rug being able to turn this one down.

Destination? Funk! (4:30)
Camelot Chill (4:52)
Review: This is the third installment in the Local Sugar Diggers Series from Scruniversal in which old and rare records from the label head's friend's collections get reworked and edited. This one is a collab between ScruScru and an equally passionate digger from Cyprus known as Dwaal. Both tunes offer quite different looks but with great results. The first is the steamy and loose-limbed 'Destination? Funk!' with its squelchy bass and neat guitar riffs, while the flipside is a super deep and lush downtempo jam, 'Camelot Chill'. This one has romantic sax notes and gentle grooves with jazzy keys finishing it in style.

Visions Of My Love (3:23)
Life (2:45)
Review: Cordial serve up some previously unreleased funky and soulful vibes from the much loved West Coast group Seaquence. These are high speed and hugely cosmic affairs with squealing synths reaching for the skies over driving rhythm sections. 'Visions Of My Love' opens up and is a short but potent bit of soul power with lung busting vocals and great horns. 'Life' on the flip side is more mellifluous, with acrobatic vocals rising and falling over more great horns and splashes of jazzy drum work.

Crate Breaks Vol 2
Cat: DS 702. Rel: 16 Jan 20
Crate Breaks Three (5:02)
Crate Breaks Four (5:20)
Review: Released late last year, Dirty Drum Productions first "Crate Breaks" seven-inch offered up two sides of cut-and-paste drum breaks - with gaps in between - for turntablists to play around with. This second salvo follows a similar blueprint. What you get is a series of celebrated (and in some cases lesser-known) breakbeats lifted from rock, funk and soul records, EQ'd and re-mastered for maximum loudness. These breaks - arranged into loose "tracks" as "Crate Breaks 3" and "Crate Breaks 4" - are clean enough to either sample, or use during turntablist routines. If you buy two copies, you can even "double up" with them and create fresh backing tracks for the MC of your choice.

Review: Classic Soul styles from Detroit ensemble Will Sessions pressed up on authentic dinked 45! Run Don't Walk Away finds the Sam Beaubien-led band working once more with vocalist Coco, and if you picked up Boss Lady, that 2013 funk jammer they previously collaborated on, you will be all over this like a bad suit. Coco takes centre stage here, her heart-wrenchingingly soulful vocals leading the way whilst the Will Sessions gang beat out an instrumental groove you'd be hard pressed to separate from the JBs finest.
