Natural Born
Review: Fresh from delivering killer dancefloor jazz covers of classics cuts by Galaxy 2 Galaxy and Avicii (really), Japanese trio Polyplus deliver a fine sequel to last year's Good Luck Sound Tracks EP. They go for the dancefloor jugular from the off, wrapping snaking sax solos, fuzzy guitar licks and elongated solos around a breathlessly rapid punk-funk groove on 'Massive', before fusing Brit-Funk and sweat-soaked jazz-rock on 'Speedy Gold'. This hybrid jazz-funk/rock sound continues on 'Ranki 2025' (whose heavy beats and memorable piano riffs nods to classic house). Elsewhere, 'Ocean Breeze' re-frames wide-eyed city-pop as jaunty jazz-funk and 'Natural Born' is a drum solo-sporting slab of jazz-rock/jazz-fusion insanity straight from the top drawer.

Review: The ever awesome Honest Jon's decision to reissue its back catalogue in digital format gives you a chance to delve back into the amazing album of Chaabi music from the Abdel Hadi Halo & The El Gusto Orchestra of Algiers. The Damon Albarn fronted excursion by Team Honest Jons into Algiers in 2007 has been compared to a film of certain famous Cuban musicians several times over, but the focus should certainly be on the music. Comprised of six lengthy tracks of gripping rhythmic music that sways effortlessly between classical and popular styles, the 19 minutes that make up "Mal Djifni" prove a real highlight, sounding like it could go on forever. This has to be heard to be believed.

Review: Arabic music crate-diggers Habibi Funk have so far proved adept at unearthing killer material from the 1970s and '80s that joins the dots between indigenous styles and familiar Western genres. Their latest collection focuses on the work of 1970s Egyptian band Al Massireen, an outfit funded by one of the country's most successful producers of the period, Hany Shenoda. Modern Music, so called because the band was Shenoda's attempt to modernize Arabic music, includes tracks taken from a wealth of forgotten cassettes and albums. Musically, it's rather special; a heady blend of Arabic vocals and instrumentation, orchestral disco influences, blue-eyed soul, grown-up pop and dreamy West Coast style rock.

Review: Alessandro Alessandroni was an Italian composer and bandleader well known for his distinctive whistling style and a lifetime's worth of achievements. In 1972 he recorded Open Air Parade with Giovanni Tommaso, a wonderful curio of psychedelic obscurity with a library music flavour. It's bright and joyous, but also shot through with a heady transcendence and a kind of regalia - quite the unique combination rendered in exquisite clarity on this reissue from Sonor Music. If you enjoy the luxurious big band adventures of Italian greats like Ennio Morricone and Piero Umiliani, then Open Air Parade is sure to be of great interest.

Review: And so it is that we say a teary goodbye to Claremont 56's superb Originals series of decidedly Balearic compilations. While a bespoke vinyl box set featuring tracks from the series is due at the end of September, this is the last official installment. This time round, NYC-based, Tokyo-raised Frenchman Alex From Tokyo is the man at the controls. Predictably, his selections are spot on, from the laidback, jazz guitar-flecked bliss of his own Tokyo Black Star re-edit of Pepe California's "Meli-Fali", and the wide-eyed synth-Balearica of Violets' "Sunset", to the tongue-in-cheek post-disco funk of Electric Guitars' "Night Bears", and the 1983 proto-house/boogie dubbiness of Tia Monae's "Don't Keep Me Waiting (Dub Mix)". In other words, it's as impeccable and essential as the rest of the series.

Review: How often does a superstar band leader hand his band over to his drummer, while he steps back to become a sideman? That's what Fela Kuti, undoubtedly the coolest, hippest, best known African musician on the planet, did in 1975. "Afro Disco Beat" is the complete seventies anthology of the drummer and music director of superstar Fela Kuti's band Africa 70, the creators of a new style called 'Afrobeat', one of the (if not THE) hippest rhythmic music styles of the seventies. Tony Allen was an incredible drummer of whom Fela Kuti said "he sounds like four drummers".

Review: Although he started his career back in the early 2000s and has links with Moodymann's Mahogani Music label, Andres' profile has increased of late thanks to a string of brilliant EPs for M1 Sessions and his own La Vida . The time is surely right, then, to drop his first commercially available mix CD. As you'd expect, it's firmly rooted in soul, effortlessly joining the dots between disco-funk, jazz, slow jams, global beats and summery Latin flavas. Opening with the Universal Robot Band's impeccable "Dance and Shake Your Tambourine", Culture Shock sits somewhere between a particularly good radio show and a dancefloor-bating mix-up, making it perfect for home listening. It also includes Gilberto Gil's disco era samba classic "Toda Menina Baiana", which is never a bad thing.

Review: 'The Warner Bros Years: Hits, Remixes, & Rarities' is a 2-CD compilation boasting lush, soulful originals, impossible to find 12" versions and sensational contemporary remixes of signature tracks from R&B's most enduring duo. The phenomenal R&B performing and song-writing partnership of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, better known as simply Ashford & Simpson, made their Warner Bros recording debut with 1973's Billboard Top 20 LP 'Gimme Something Real'. Over the course of more than a decade with the label, the duo's legend grew with a string of chart hits and acclaimed albums, among them 1978's gold-selling 'Is It Still Good To Ya'. Rhino's new 2-CD compilation features unforgettable originals and 12" versions on Disc 1 followed by inspired contemporary remixes on Disc 2. As songwriters, Ashford & Simpson gave the world classics including 'I'm Every Woman' and 'Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing'. As performers they deliver sonic ecstasy, celebrated to the max on this innovative set. The 2-CDs feature over 2-½ hours of music.

Mulatu's Mood

Review: Generally accepted as the father of Ethio jazz, Mulatu Astatke releases his first studio album in over twenty years through Strut. Mulatu Steps Ahead signals somewhat of a new approach for the veteran who also engages with western jazz in favour of his more familiar, native style that has made him such a pioneering artist during the 60s and 70s. Having been making jazz music for the last 50 years, Mulatu Astatke has worked with some of the greats of the jazz world. On this album, he recorded with members of the Either/Orchestra in Boston, with members of The Heliocentrics and some of the UK's leading jazz and African players whilst also adding contributions by traditional Ethiopian musicians in Addis. The album follows on from the success of both the acclaimed Inspiration Information collaboration and recent Strut compilation, New York "Addis " London.
Mulatu Steps does not focus on his past roots however, indeed much of it was recorded in the States. The result is a more traditional sounding jazz record than we are used to from him. But that is not to say there is less intrigue and personality woven into it though. In fact, each track on the album tells its very own story. Opener "Radcliffe" reflects on his time as a lecturer at Harvard University.
"Assosa" adapts traditional music from the Assosa tribes of North-Western Ethiopia, "Mulatu's Mood" re-works a Mulatu jazz fusion composition from the early 1990s into a new swinging Afro high life arrangement and "Derashe" deals with the traditional diminishing scales of the Derashe people of Southern Ethiopia. Although different from his previous work, Mulatu Astatke continues to keep jazz fresh, contemporary and up to date whether it’s African or American. Let’s just hope it’s not another twenty years until his next studio album.

With a very soulful singer from the Vienna scene, the most requested Austrian funk LP from the 70s selling for large amounts, top rare and in demand grooves for collectors and DJs. Originally released on the Bacillus label/ Bellaphon, now brought back from Sonorama, featuring famous and bootlegged version of Bill Withers' 'Ain't No Sunshine', funk dancers 'Necessity' and 'Hey Man!', plus blue-eyed soul tune 'Play It Cool'. Recorded from the master tapes, remastered 2008, this album includes the original cover artwork.

Review: Veteran Swiss DJ/producer Alex Attias has long been one of Europe's more versatile and open-minded DJs, so it's fitting that BBE have given him a chance to flex his curatorial muscles. LillyLillyGood, which shares its name with a monthly party and label Attias runs, was inspired by Attias's desire to present "really good grooves that people want to dance to or listen to or home". He's done just that, whizzing through an unmixed selection that giddily flits between trippy, polyrhythmic acid madness (Grooveman Spot), jaunty jazz-funk (Freeeze, Cro Magnon's ultra-deep hook-up with Roy Ayers), synth-fuelled broken beat business (Tatham, Mensah, Lord and Ranks), deliciously spacey deep house (the Zanzibar remix of Nicole Willis's "Curiosity") and killer disco (Attias's own edit of Velvet Hammer's "Party Hearty").

Review: Massive reissue incoming! BBE have answered many of our prayers with this long awaited repress of Roy's 1983 disco funk excursion "Silver Vibrations". A record that's currently fetching triple figures, this is the first time it's been repressed since it was released. Opening with the iconic whispered message of "Chicago", Roy takes us on a trip through his funkiest of quarters; the salubrious slap bass of "Lots Of Love", the Afrobeat staccato vocals and glock rocking vibrancy of "Silver Vibrations" and the dreamy cosmic jazz trip of "DC City" are just some of the highlights, all shared across the 12"s with no more than two tracks per side. Vibes that can't be slept on.

Review: With 'breaking' making its debut in the 2024 Paris Olympics, it seems an apt time to go back to where it all began and showcase some of the music that first made break-dancers move in the early years of hip-hop culture. Soul Jazz Records clearly agrees, hence this two-disc retrospective of early 'breaker' favourites curated by Arthur Baker - a man who's productions and remixes soundtracked many dancefloor battles in the early 80s. It's a suitably strong selection all told, with dusty funk, soul and funk-rock favourites (Johnny Bristol, James Brown, The Jimmy Castor Bunch, Spanky Wilson) being joined by disco-funk jams (Herman Kelly and Life), extra-percussive workouts (Manu Dibango, Mongo Santamaria, Candido) and a smattering of key Baker productions (Afrika Bambaata and Soul Sonic Force's 'Planet Rock' and his own infectious 'Breakers Revenge').

Review: We can think of few better to mix up a selection of "the best new electro swing" than Bart and Baker, the top hat-sporting French duo who rank amongst the sound's most popular DJs. Joining the dots between horn-totin', funk-fuelled club workouts, acid-flecked contemporary takes on big band swing, hip-hop tempo wigglers, bouncy electro-house (see Caravan Palace's sizeable cover of "Black Betty") and confirmed dancefloor smashers, the veteran DJ twosome does a terrific job in keeping the party going throughout. Expect a string of their own tracks and remixes, dramatic changes in pace and more hot-stepping horn lines than you'd think it was possible to cram into 80 minutes of jaunty and cheery music.

Review: Having introduced a whole new generation to the obscure (but brilliant) ambient productions of Gigi Masin, Music From Memory turns its' attention to another overlooked hero of the Balearic scene: Spanish guitarist Joan Biblioni. El Sur is the first attempt at a career retrospective, and predictably it's very good. It includes early forays into disco-tinged jazz-funk, decidedly Balearic mood pieces (see the shimmering "Nits De La Suntana"), immersive ambient and new age ("Sa Fosca", "La Espanola"), and humid, sticky fare laden with complex rhythms and sweet marimba melodies - all accompanied, of course, by Biblioni's immaculate guitar playing.

Review: Aloe Blacc's arrival on the radar of the record buying hoi polloi may have come via the title sequence of a HBO song, but it's richly deserved for a singer who has a weighty back catalogue to his name. From spending the late nineties as part of hip-hop duo Emanaon to a slew of releases on the esteemed Stones Throw imprint, the eponymous "I Need A Dollar" has thrown the spotlight on the Orange County resident and his second album Good Things takes full advantage. Central to the album is a theme of social commentary, clearly evident from the track titles and expanded lyrically by Aloe Blacc. Backed by some accomplished arrangements led by the Truth & Soul Records team and members of El Michels Affair, this is an album steeped in vintage seventies soul with a contemporary twist. The warm organ riffing of "Loving You Is Killing" and dirty funk of "Hey Brother" in particular prove to be most memorable.

Known for its groove-driven, horn-laden funk and N'Dea Davenport's powerhouse vocals, the album delves into deep jazz grooves. Released after their debut and the Hip-Hop collaboration Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol. 1, Brother Sister carved out its own unique space. Debuting at number four on the UK charts, it achieved global success, solidifying the band's Acid Jazz dominance. This newly remastered edition comes as a 2CD version that includes two newly discovered demos, 'Pocketful of Bass' and an alternate version of 'Put Yourself In My Shoes'.

Formed in 1985 by drummer/keyboardist Jan Kincaid, guitarist Simon Bartholomew, and bassist/keyboardist Andrew Levy - long-time school friends from the London suburb of Ealing - the BNH were originally an instrumental unit inspired by the James Brown and Meters records its members heard while clubbing the rare groove scene in vogue at the moment. The trio soon began recording their own music. One thing lead to another, and now, twenty years later the BNH are world famous, they have put out six great albums, many singles and an endless stream of hits. This album, called "Elephantitis", compiles two and a half hours of incredible remixes, all taken straight off their commercial and promotional singles. Split right down the middle, the remixes, done by legends including Masters at Work (Kenny Dope and Louie Vega), Jay Dee, Davis Morales, Todd Terry, The Angel and Joey Negro, are divided into two categories: Funk remixes and House remixes, all done between 1991-1997. If you are, or ever were, a fan of the Brand New Heavies, this brilliant 26 song, double CD collection is a dream come true.

Review: James Brown represented what may well be the greatest and yet most contradictory career in the history of pop. His most enduring invention was undoubtedly the music we now know as funk. In the mid-sixties James Brown ignited a pop music revolution with the release of "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag." He followed through with classics such as "I Got You", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", "Sex Machine", "Super Bad" and many more, effectively bringing the whole thing home. Music shaped by melody gave way to music dominated by rhythm; as dry as it may sound, this in fact marked the birth of modern dance music and would decisively influence generations of music lovers. In 2006 a select group of international producers, musicians and DJs set out to pay tribute to "Soul Brother Number One." For once, "The Hardest Working Man In Show Business" was able to kick back and let others do the work. The result of this project is a collection of fascinating remixes of James Brown's classic hits. The variety of approaches in these reworkings is outstanding; each artist explores his own personal "James Brown cosmos" and leaves behind an exceptional musical fingerprint.

Review: Few things around at the moment come close to sounding as funky as this new album from Uruguayan singer and songwriter Martin Buscaglia. Full of live instruments and Buscaglia's soulful Spanish vocals, this will be a real revelation for anyone who appreciates everything from Prince to Gilberto Gil. Opener Jaula De Motos is relaxed yet uptight, with guitar chords riffing on the famous "chanking" rhythms of James Brown's pioneering guitarist Jimmy Nolen. There's so much glorious variety on this album that it's almost impossible to categorise it, but it's a real treat from start to end and definitely deserves to be given some serious listening time. It'll prove a thoroughly worthwhile investment.

Review: Originally recorded and released in 1993, On The Move was the last studio album James Brown collaborator Bobby Byrd recorded during his lifetime. While it may have been recorded after Byrd's 1970s heyday, musically it offers full-throttle funk - albeit with slicker and more expansive musical arrangements - of the kind that he and Brown used to deliver in their sleep. It's a great set all told, with this (delayed) 30th anniversary edition also including instrumental versions of all eight original tracks. It also boasts a couple of rare non-album tracks recorded at the time: the slow-motion, horns-and-guitar solo laden 'Sunshine' and the effortlessly funky, low-down and addictive 'Don't Throw Your Love in the Garbage Can'.

Review: Milwaukee-born saxophonist turned singer James Chance is best known as a lynchpin of the late '70s New York 'no wave' movement, where he appeared in various influential outfits, including Aural Exciters, Teenage Jesus & The Jerks and, of course, the Contortions. Incorrigible is the first album from Chance and the Contortions for a few years. It builds on the single of the same name released by Rong Music back in 2010. Musically, it's quirky and delightfully entertaining, joining the dots between freaky funk, rhythm and blues, no wave, punk funk and jazz-flecked balladeering. Chance is a great frontman, sounding not unlike a ragged Mick Jagger high on cheap bourbon, strong cigarettes and amphetamines. That's the essence of rock and roll, after all.

Review: Self-proclaimed "quadruple threat" (he is, after all, a DJ, comedian, actor and poet) Craig Charles swings open his colossal Trunk of Funk for a third time. In line with previous dives into the popular BBC 6 Music DJ's music collection, he's served up a selection that moves between the decades, taking in all manner of funky treats (think funk breaks, modern soul, jazz-funk, disco-boogie, classic soul and more). Flick through the clips and you'll find genius-like gospel (the Harlem Gospel Travellers), recent remixes (Smoove reworking the Third Degree, A Skillz putting his stamp on The Niceguys), classics reimagined (the Boogie Back rework of Beggar & Co classic 'Somebody Help Me Out'), modern gems (Dave Lee and Omar) and the odd exclusive (a previously unheard vocal version of The New Mastersounds' 'Watchu Want').

Review: In 2013, Joaquin "Joe" Clausell continued his explorations into the links between music, faith and spirituality with the release of a DJ mix dedicated to the world of gospel music. Two years later, he arrives at volume three, once again keen to prove his belief that gospel is "the true soul music". Certainly, PRAISE: Raise Your Hands and Praise does a good job of showcasing the links between soul, funk, disco, house and gospel, slinging together admirably celebratory selections from NYCC, The Twenty-First Century Singers, Hope Collective, Spirit Of Your Love and Billy Paul. To keep listeners guessing, Clausell also includes a number of spoken word interludes and more traditional sounding gospel favourites.

Review: Over the years, few have been quite as good at joining the dots between jazz, funk and rock as drummer, composer and bandleader Billy Cobham. The Panamanian American drummer initially found fame as a key part of Miles Davis' 1960s ensemble, but it was his solo albums of the 1970s that really took jazz-fusion to whole new places. 1975's A Funky Side of Things remains one of the best examples of Cobham's pioneering work. Joined by an impressive cast-list of collaborators, Cobham delivered a string of energetic, hybrid jazz/rock rhythms onto which all manner of heavyweight riffs, melodies and improvised solos were added. The result is a set of heavyweight jazz-funk/jazz-rock fusion cuts packed with untold levels of energy and excitement.

Naturally, he's been asked to mix up the latest series of DJ Kicks and, ladies and gentlemen, it's a real masterclass - one of those comps you can safely leave on and let it do its thing on you. The mood is personified by a fine blend of electronics and tougher, funkier rhythms by artists such as Index, Moon B, and Dam himself. There are also a few rare cuts by Chicago house legend Gemini that fit in perfectly, and a whole heap of wavy, Cali-inspired electronic funk. Badass.

Review: It would be fair to say that Bristolian selector Andy Smith has extremely deep crates. It's for this reason that he's been responsible for tons of killer compilations over the years. This one, the second in his disco, boogie and proto-house focused "Reach Up" series, is another gem. It cheerily moves between disco old and new, mixing tried-and-tested classic cuts from the likes of the New Jersey Connection, Ted Taylor, Chain Reaction and The Gibson Brothers with more recent retro-futurist cuts (see his subtly house-friendly re-edit of Will Session and Amp Fiddler's superb "Lost Without You" and Full Intention and Nick Reach Up's modern electrofunk treat "Night of My Life"). While confirmed disco enthusiasts may own some of the tracks already, there's enough lesser known goodness to make the compilation an essential purchase.

Disco Dub Band - "For The Love Of Money"
Review: Given the depth of his record collection, you'd expect crate-digging hero Andy Smith to be able to put together a rather good disco and boogie compilation. That's exactly what he does here. Named after his disco-themed DJ collective, Reach Up does a great job in joining the dots between familiar anthems (Disco Dub Band's "For The Love of Money", World Premiere's "Share The Night", Freedom's break-diggin' fave "Get Up & Dance" and Sure Thing's modern electrofunk smash "Holding Me Tight") and slightly deeper, often overlooked selections (Advance's boogie killer "Take Me To The Top" and Jimmy Bo Horne's "Is It In" being great examples). Smith's mix on disc one is typically smooth, entertaining and on-point, while the unmixed second disco offers an opportunity to own the same cuts in full-length, DJ-friendly form.

Review: Japanese turntablist DJ Muro is fast becoming the undisputed king of the crate digging mixtape. Certainly, few around the world have released quite as many, or touched on quite as many styles. Astonishingly, he's clocked up well over 150 mixtapes and CDs since putting out the first King Of Diggin' set some 20 years ago. This latest missive follows a similar format to most of his excursions, joining the dots between a brilliant obscure (and, as is traditional, uncredited) selection of funk, funk-rock, jazz, soul and jazz-funk jams. It's wildly entertaining, of course, and many listeners will be left desperately searching online for some hint as to the track IDs.

The renowned crate digger's sprawling discography contains hundreds of mix CDs in a multitude of styles, from hip-hop, disco, boogie and obscure funk, to slow jams, Balearica and soundtrack instrumentals. Here, he delivers the third installment in his Super Funky Reggae Breaks series, once again digging deep to present a killer collection of largely obscure material. As usual, there's no track list - that would spoil the fun, after all - with the 28 tracks touching on ska, roots, dub, rocksteady, reggae-disco and, of course, "super funky reggae". It is, of course, a hugely entertaining romp from one of Japanese dance music's most versatile DJs.

This breezy selection centres on the all-rounder genre's favourite international foci, boogie and funk: frissonic formulas for sensational home listening. Most tracks here make their debut on vinyl outside of Japan; from Buzz's pristine tremolo'er 'Garasumado', to Keiko Toda's escape-noteworthy 'Fade In' and Yuji Mitsuya's delirious summer disco dirge 'After Five At Caf-Bar', this is an impeccable curation job.

Review: Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr., better known as Dr. John, left an indelible mark on the music world with his unique blend of New Orleans R&B, blues, jazz, funk and rock. As a teenage prodigy, he cut his teeth as a songwriter, arranger, and producer for Ace Records before becoming a sought-after studio musician in Los Angeles during the 1960s. His debut album Gris Gris in 1968 catapulted him into the spotlight as Dr. John The Night Tripper, captivating audiences with its mystical allure. Hits like 'Iko Iko' and 'Right Place Wrong Time' solidified his place in music history, earning him six Grammy awards and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now, Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya: Singles 1968-1974 collects his early singles from his influential years with Atco/Atlantic, offering 26 tracks of pure musical medicine. The iconic 'Such A Night,' alone makes this compilation is essential for both seasoned fans and newcomers alike. With liner notes from Gene Sculatti, it serves as a perfect entry point into the timeless world of Dr. John's music and a nostalgic journey through his classic Atco/Atlantic albums.

Review: Ezra Collective were hugely inspired by Emma Warren's ode to the joys of social dancing, last year's critically acclaimed book Dance Your Way Home. So much so, in fact, that they recorded and sequenced the album to "musically guide" listeners through "a night out in the city, from the opening of possibilities as a new evening pans out ahead, to dawn's final hours as the night comes to a close". Recorded at Abbey Road studios, the set lives up to its promise, with an ebb and flow that combines their contemporary jazz brilliance and soulful exuberance with rhythms and grooves rooted in different dancefloors across the world. Throw in superb sleeve notes from Warren extolling the "joys of dancing" and the band members' own dancefloor journeys, and you have a package that genuinely lives up to its promise.

Review: While visiting Morocco in 2012, Habibi Funk founder Jannis Sturtz wandered into a dusty electronics store in Casablanca. While there, he discovered a stash of previously unknown Moroccan funk records from the 1970s and early '80s. The one that really pricked his interest came from a singer called Fadoul. Four years and countless trips to Morocco later, he's finally ready to tell the story of a man who made "Arabic funk with a punk attitude". Al Zman Saib, the first collection of this forgotten funk hero's little-known career, is full of fuzzy, attitude-laden, lo-fi funk gems. As well as original material inspired by his American heroes, the compilation also contains his Arabic language covers of tracks by James Brown and Free. Like the rest of the material, both are deliciously loose, heavy and enthusiastically performed.

Review: On "Dos", his first album since the demise of Funkstorung, Michael Fakesch has taken the strangely alluring musical form known across the butt-shaking globe as 'funk' and battered it to within an inch of its dancefloor hugging life. An essential K7 release.

Review: For the latest volume in their crate-digging disco series, Under The Influence, Z Records has turned to long-serving British brothers Simon and Robin Lee AKA Faze Action. In keeping with the series' dusty-fingered ethos, there's plenty of brilliant rarities to set the pulse racing - see the smooth '80s boogie of Leston Paul's "All Nite Tonight", the sublime Afro-disco brilliance of Bebe Manga, the up-tempo hustle of Oscar Perry's "Body Movements" and the South American disco swirl of Don Lurio's "Ruba Ruba" - as well as a smattering of obscure versions of classic dancefloor hits (check Michele Claire's version of "In The Bush"). You'll also find a smattering of killer Faze Action edits, too, with their version of Midway's "Set It Out" and Mikki's freestyle-era boogie ham "Dance Lover" standing out.

Review: On March 5-7, 1971, the one and only Queen of Soul headlined Bill Graham's world-famous rock venue Fillmore West. The triumphant three-night series of sold-out concerts, which the legendary singer has since called a career highlight, was the vision of Atlantic's Jerry Wexler, who'd signed Aretha and produced her classic studio recordings. In looking to win her a broader audience, Wexler turned to the musical home of San Francisco's flower children for crossover success. Her connection with the enthralled audience proved intense, and the shows were a seminal breakthrough for Aretha's own peerless legacy and for the popularisation of soul music overall. Backed by the super-charged rhythm section of King Curtis and The Kingpins, Aretha is in peak form on a diverse set of classic songs that dramatically show why this 15 x Grammy winning artist - and the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - is one of music's all-time greats of any genre. Two CDs featuring two hours of concert magic, remastered to sound better than ever-the original classic live album plus a second disc of alternate rarities. Disc 1 features the original single-disc album, updated to present two previously edited tracks in their entirety including Franklin's momentous duet with Ray Charles on "Spirit In The Dark." Disc 2 is comprised of rare alternate versions previously available only on the very limited edition, now out-of-print, Rhino Handmade title Don't Fight The Feeling: The Complete Aretha Franklin & King Curtis Live At Fillmore West. Highlights include 'You're All I Need To Get By' 'Mixed-Up Girl' and 'Dr. Feelgood' and more.

Review: Given the brilliantly simple concept behind this fine compilation - contemporary Detroit producers remix Funkadelic - we're rather surprised nobody's done it before. With 17 varied re-rubs stretched across two hugely entertaining CDs, there's plenty to enjoy. Highlights come thick and fast, from the deep house/P-funk fusion of Alton Miller's take on "Get Your Ass Off and Jam" and Andres' loose, hip-hop influenced revision of "Music For My Mother", to the thrusting loops and heady late night hypnotism of Anthony Shake Shakir and T-Dancer's version of "Standing on the Verge". While many of the versions stay relatively faithful to the original, the more "out-there" interpretations - see BMG's outer-space ambient dub of "Maggot Brain" and Moodymann's epic revision of "Cosmic Slop" - are also consistently impressive.

I Can't Be Satisfied
Review: Point Of No Return, the 1974 debut album by Nigerian combo the Funkees, has long been a sought-after set amongst those who dig for Afro-Funk and Afro-Rock fusion. Here, the inspired set gets a CD reissue for the very first time. It's a fine set, all told, with much of the material sounding not unlike similarly minded British combo Cymande, who burst onto the scene two years before the Funkees made their recording debut. Dotted throughout the album you'll find fuzzier, harder-edged cuts inspired by psychedelic rock, and the electric piano-laden, William Onyeabor-ish bounce of the inspired title track. If you're in the mood for heavy percussion, wild organ lines and even heavier guitars, this should be an essential purchase.

Review: This longstanding New Orleans funk institution have made their name not only with instrumental prowess and a propensity for paying homage to the rich musical heritage of their hometown, but with a love of collaboration, and 'Into The Deep' sees them welcoming the likes of Macy Gray, Mavis Staples, JJ Grey and others on board to deal out a rich and rewarding collection of songs that deal in celebratory atmosphere, stripped-down groove and effortless cool. Balancing out classicism and open-minded innovation in style, Galactic casually redefine how a funk record can be made in the 21st century.
