Review: The 4 Jades are a mysterious soul and funk group from Ohio, who first released these two stunning tracks in 1972 under the label Cin-Town Records. Written and produced by label owner Wilbert Longmire, who also features on guitar here, he joins the likes of William L Johnson for a loving stylistic homage to the likes of James Brown and Curtis Mayfield here. Both 'Gee, How I Miss You' and 'Doon-Chang' express the sultrier and waltzier respective ends of the Jades' sound; don't let their name fool you, as they're anything but 'jaded', with the former track flaunting their lithely harmonic acapella abilities and the latter reflecting a more sexually tense atmosphere, one that hardly assumes a thing.

Review: There's not a lot of information out there about Arcade of Serpe, so let's skip the back story and cut to the chase. If that's really an appropriate turn of phrase here. Nothing about Cave Adventure feels rushed. Nothing. In fact, it's quite the opposite, opening on dub-wise bass and playful organs, the atmosphere - somewhere between lackadaisical, come down, BBQ, and psychedelic - subtly rises, although not to a crescendo as much as a delicate fade out after a few minutes strutting to the funk-laden groove. Flip it to find more explorations in the sonic ether, with 'Unicorn Rider' smoothly stepping out into a surreal track that uses space and emptiness to accentuate the noises that are there, which mirror, if not directly reflect, the opening title tune. It's quiet, but you won't forget it in a hurry.

Review: When British prog rock band Babe Ruth recorded 'The Mexican' - a low-slung funk-rock workout that came complete with weighty bass and killer drum breaks - they could have had no idea of the impact it would have during the block party phase of hip-hop's evolution (or, for that matter, that Jellybean Benitez would record a Latin hip-hop cover in the early 80s). It's the track's significance within hip-hop that inspired these revisions from break-digger Mister Mushi. Both of the producer's 'Special Edit' versions - vocal on the A-side, instrumental on the flip - make the most of the track's prototype hip-hop breaks, restless bassline and Latin-tinged fuck-rock guitar licks. Review: Riffing off of his recent sophomore album, street soul and R&B artist Teddy Bryant joins forces with German Funk producer WOZ301 to provide what's sure to be one of this summer's many dancefloor anthems. 'Time To Move' recalls the similarly pithy, glitzed-out disco-funk of the eponymous song by Carmen, except Bryant brings not only a lower register but also an excess of irony to the form, crafting a whole new narrative around the idea of movement, while letting on his excitement at the sight of us. After a mini album from Rosa and an LP from The Funkin' Machine, the latest drop features a new project called Capinera. If you're into any of the sounds Periodica are known for, you're sure to find a lot to love about this sunny slice of synthy, yacht-ready disco funk. 'Il Volo' is nestled on the A-side in a swirl of smooth sax, mellow chords and a supremely laid back rhythm section. 'Suonno' on the flip has a slightly peppier step, but it's still chilled enough to keep from breaking a sweat. This is sophisticated party music, after all.
