Man With A Mission
Cat: FTR 047. Rel: 21 Sep 22
Big Youth - "Man With A Mission" (3:52)
The 18th Parallel - "Missionary" (dub) (3:45)
Review: Big Youth is self-described as a "contemporary Christian, a man of God, martial artist and system engineer as well as a DJ and producer. Here he lays down some classic and heartwarming reggae sounds with The 18th Parallel serving up the dub. 'Man With A Mission' is a fleshy rhythm with great horns and yearning vocals that are buttery smooth and silky soft. The flip side is a smart studio dub with more room for the fills, echoing his and molten chords to resonate. A timeless and fruity 7" for sure.

Blue Bells - "Come Along" (3:09)
The Upsetter - "Along Came A Dub" (2:55)
Review: A slept-on roots gem from the mid-70s gets a timely reissue, perfect for warming up those cold winter days. Originally produced by Hector Wright at Lee "Scratch" Perry's legendary Black Ark Studios, this timeless piece showcases the vocal harmonies of The Blue Bells. A-side 'Come Along' features a captivating blend of soulful vocals and uplifting melodies, while the flipside offers a dubwise reimagining, stripping back the arrangement to reveal its hypnotic depths. Originally released in 1976, this repress makes a rare gem accessible once more.

Ghetto Man (3:54)
Ghetto (version) (3:54)
Review: After racking up millions of streams for hits like 'Jump Up Pon It' and 'Heal Them', Brother Culture is now a reggae and dub icon having been a key figure in the UK scene for decades. His powerful voice and conscious lyrics have earned him a deserving global recognition and now he teams up with Swiss reggae masters The 18th Parallel for 'Ghetto Man,' a hard-hitting anthem of resilience and justice. Their deep roots sound, combined with Brother Culture's commanding delivery, makes for an electrifying track and on the flip, Paolo Baldini DubFiles adds his signature dub touch, making this a sound system anthem that speaks to struggles and strength worldwide.

Beat Sound (3:39)
Beat Dub (3:46)
Review: J:Kenzo's Lion Charge label is a surefire authority in the realm of contemporary roots-minded dubstep, and so it goes with this new bombshell from Bukkha and Dubbing Sun. "Beat Sound" is a massive stepper with a malevolent bassline to get totally consumed by, embellished by Teacha Dee toasting and singing perfectly over the top. It's the first 12" from Lion Charge this year, and sets them off in the kind of heavyweight dread direction that will hopefully give rise to more of these devastatingly effective soundsystem smashers. The true spirit of dubstep is alive and well in records like this, where the legacy of Jamaican music can be felt pulsating across the frequency range.

On the A side of this inaugural 7' we have Jamaican legend Cornel Campbell (of Studio One fame) with the 1975 vibe of 'Hold On', while over on the flip we have the version by The 18th Parallel's - the production team behind the record comprised of Antonin Chatelain and Mathias Liengme.

Review: This is a previously unreleased treat from the Boom Shacka Lacka label: 'Homeward Bound' is by UK roots legends The Disciples and talented vocalist Creation Stepper. It has its roots as a 1991 dub plate that finally sees the light of day all these decades on. This powerful track blends roots reggae with the unmistakable sound of The Disciples' production and is paired with a dub version on the flip. Timeless digital roots and dub from The Disciples here featuring the late Jamaican singer Creation Stepper, who i most famously well known for his iconic 70s roots reggae classics. This release includes a fresh take on Stepper's 1978 track, 'Kill Nebuchadnezzar' and it is paired with another vocal gem, 'Ozone Layer,' plus two powerful dub versions. Originally mixed and produced by Russ D in The Disciples' studio in 1991, this music finally saw the light of day in 2011 on the Disciples Vintage label where it quickly sold out. Culture - "Two Sevens Clash" (3:42)
The Mighty Two - "Two Sevens Clash" (version) (3:40)
Review: The classic 'Two Sevens Clash', which Joe Gibbs produced so well, is a timeless reggae outing that gets a welcome reissue here. Anyone of a certain age might remember this as a soundtrack to the years when punk was appropriating reggae sounds. The tune is from an album that was listened to between punk gigs and when not getting beaten up by Teds. The band of course didn't know this would become its fate and in isolation it remains a special listen with some smart mixing desk effects, hissing hi hats and nice dusty and deep low ends.

Accumulate (part 1) (13:24)
Accumulate (part 2) (11:14)
Review: Long-serving producer Fluxion has decided to re-launch his Vibrant Music imprint, a label specializing in dub techno and ambient explorations that previously ceased operations in 2005. Fittingly, he's saved something special for the relaunch 12": a collaboration with Detroit dub techno don Rod "Deepchord" Modell as Transformations. The two-part "Accumulate" draws on the best of both producers' styles, delivering melodious, warm, hypnotic and spacey techno whose dub influences bubble away in the background without ever taking over. Rodell's ability to subtly tweak and transform dubbed-out melodic loops and hazy sonic textures is explored in greater detail on side B's "Part 2" version, which also boasts a heavier bassline and sturdier, kick-drum-driven percussion.

Review: The next Boom Shacka Lacka is yet another crucial outing for dub heads. It comes from The Disciples and features the pipes of Earl 16. It features two different tunes in two different forms starting with 'Life Is A Journey', a mid-tempo and fat-bottomed dub with pleading vocals from Earl up top next to some natty keys and horns. A hefty dub version is next up with some signature hissing hi-hats and rumbling bass. The B-side has 'Journey Dub' to sink you into a spotter mind before a different mix of it then brings more raw harmonic leads.

Review: Many of you reading this may recognise this song from Dennis Brown's rendition on his iconic Visions LP, but this version actually predates that one. It was originally penned by Winston MacAnuff, also known as the Electric Dread, and features vocals by Earl Sixteen. It has previously debuted as a 7" on Gibbs' Belmont label in 1975, while Sixteen went on and recorded it again for Derrick Harriott on the Wild Flower label a year later. This rendition is often considered the definitive cut, but we shall leave you to decide on that one.

Review: The Robbie Ellington rhythm 'Rainbow' is taken from the long player The Herb, which was initially released in 1995. Produced by The Herb and mixed by Scruff, it is a real bit of rootsy reggae rock. The bubbling baselines keep you moving while sci-fi effects constantly take off to the skies. The vocal is airy and filled with a smooth soul, too. On the flip, Real Rock include The Herb's dub version, which is all twisted filters, drawn out pads and meon-melting vibes for smoke session and late night get downs.

Review: Dutch label Fontoyard is back and doing what it does best early in this new year, and that is serving up fresh rhythms from some of reggae's best talents. This one is the sound of T Gibbs in collaboration with Empress Ahavah who is responsible for writing the original tune. It is a superb stepping riddim that is perfectly driven by a heavy bassline. Up top, like all the most crucial dub, is a mystical melody that captivates the imagination, and some silky smooth vocals. Review: The John Collins vaults have been dug deep into for this new 12" on SpeciaL Request. Both of the tunes have been remastered and reissued and were written by the great overs rock maestro John Collins himself. First up is the super sweet and infectiously lumpy rolling reggae of Victor Romero Evans's 'At The Club.' It's a blissed out tune with a fat bottom and silky vocals. On the flip is the much more spaced out and cosmically minded dub, 'Lift Off,' by The Detonators. It's a heady tune that invites you in deep and is perfect for those stoner Sunday sessions.

Review: Indica Dubs and The Disciples' collaboration offers a fresh and exciting 10" single that blends past and future with raw dub and modern production. 'Dub Apprentice' kicks off with a heavy, steppers-driven groove, a tribute to the craft and an evolution of the sound. Junior Delgado - "Sons Of Slaves" (3:37)
The Upsetter - "Sons Of Dub" (3:29)
Review: Having a cut a record as early as 16 years old, Junior's talents were identified quickly and he went on to be a prolific roots rockers vocalist with a busy career through the 70s and 80s. One of those who heard and recorded him then was Lee "Scratch" Perry and this record was one of their collaborative standouts, pairing a driving rhythm with a powerful, catchy lead vocal and uplifting background harmonies all elevated by the unmistakable warmth of the Black Ark studio's production. It's a timeless piece of classic reggae, making it instantly memorable and irresistibly singable. Side-2 transforms the track into a dub showcase. Layers of echo, reverb and vocal snippets create a spacious, hypnotic atmosphere, with the rhythm section taking the lead. The interplay between the faintly retained chorus and effects adds depth while maintaining the song's original spirit. This reissue highlights the enduring appeal of both the original roots cut and its dub reinterpretation.

It has big ska horns and a low-slung swagger that is topped off with some fine mic work and full patois verses as well as the main vocal cry. Presented here on the a; proper sleazy, rolling, oily cosmic dub funk - with some fantastic vocal stamps from the master - it's quite remarkable for the pair's first ever collaboration. As is 'I Wonder Why' on the B. Taking a slightly more traditional dub route, here they dig deep into the roots and really get involved in the sounds and elements, gradually easing us deeper and deeper into the blend before we realise we're cap-deep in a pretty heady psychedelic stew... It's nearly impossible to find any good info on who Glendon Taylor was, nor is it easy to apprehend the history of his original label Assagai Recording co., so we'll have to go by our ears here: 'Vanity' is a parping, glissando-laden lollop through ratchety, janky roots reggae, with Taylor lamenting the hollow promises of one Mr. Brown, who says he will help the singer but does not. The weightier 'Social Version' functions as the instrumental, and is impressive in its use of echoed fills.

On the B-side, "Magnetic Fields" acts as a natural development of the flip, another eight minutes of echoing, deep techno guided by luscious pads and a whole variety of cerebral electronic sounds.

Chazbo - "Dub 1" (3:46)
Chazbo - "Dub 2" (3:45)
Review: This expansive EP gathers together some archival tracks - some previously unreleased - from a trio of UK dub and reggae stalwarts. The A-side is all about Tena Stelin's 1992 collaboration with dub mixer Centry, "Clean Up The World" - a soulful digital reggae workout that was first featured on the pair's 1992 album "Sun & Moon". Here the original comes accompanied by two previously unheard Centry reworks, including the wonderfully heavy and delay laden "Dubplate Mix". Over on side B we're treated to three versions of Chazbo's attractive dub number "Lightning & Thunder". While the solo-laden original is cool, it's the two supremely deep and weighty dub mixes that really float our boat.

Scene 4 (4:33)
Review: Following his early appearance on Samurai's Horo series, Berlin-based mysterion Theme lays down his first full-flavoured four-tracker that's arranged as a series of scenes to create a wider narrative. "Scene 1" sets the foundations with surprisingly classic drum & bass dynamics for Samurai. Pacey, kick-focussed and full of latent energy (thanks to the wall-of-sound synths), it's designed for large systems that Theme is probably more used to under his techno alias. "Scene 2" takes us deeper into the story with a swampy, slo-mo 4/4s providing a backbone to more oceanic synth leads. "Scene 3" is the montage of Theme's movie, gradually gaining momentum by way of more tidal pads, it's the moment when the chips are down and the fight is on. Finally we hit an emotional finale as "Scene 4" brings us to a deep, dubby climax. Closure? You're not going to get it on this series... But that's what keeps us tuned to Samurai anyway.

Ruddy Thomas - "Keep It Down" (2:26)
Mighty Two - "Down With It" (version) (2:30)
Review: This is a superb reissue of a real bit of top-quality roots and voters rock on 7". It finds singer Ruddy Thomas bringing his own fresh vocal update to Errol Dunkley's Keep The Pressure Down and the results are sublime - there is yearning in his vocal and smooth, warming soul next to libidinous horns that add to the vibes. On the flip is a nice tough dubwise flip which people say might well have been mixed by Ruddy himself because he was known to also work as an engineer alongside Errol Thompson at Gibb's Retirement Crescent.

Review: Nazamba & Dubsetters kicked off this new Finnish Dub & Sound label in a superb style recently and what better way to follow that up than with the reggae master, smoking king and weed aficionado Linval Thompson. This might sound like one of his classic lost cuts from the 70s but it is actually an all new tune from the Jamaican reggae icon. Dubsetters provide the gentle, percussive rhythms which are organic and deep, with Linval's smooth mic work up top adding to the global conversation about the decriminalization of cannabis. Flip it over for an even more mellow and dubbed out sound on the B-side.

Si Hecho Palante
Review: Victor Axelrod dons his Ticklah guise for more forward-thinking Latin creativity. Building on his rich repertoire (which includes the Dubside Of The Moon album and Afrofunk band Antibalas), each cut tickles a different part of the central American underbelly... The fire is ignited with a digidub-style samba standard, all spacious, wriggling with far away vocals, "Mi Sonsito" is a little more upbeat with its scuffling rhythm and sing-along chorus and "Si Hecho" concludes this neat release with a rustic lament that's produced with 21st century depth and scope.

Review: Following her beguiling debut album Draw Me A Silence, Azu Tiwaline continues to join the dots with this four track EP on Livity. Here we find her weaving between dub, techno and her influences from her Saharan homeland. Collaborating with sound artist Cinna Peyghamy, once again Azu wraps us up in a sandstorm of frequencies and textures. Unhurried and spacious yet intense and immersive, each cut takes us deep into the desert from the hypnotic, camel's slouch rhythm and dubby mirages of the opening title track to the gradually unwinding sunset meltdown of "Tessiture". Magnetising.

Review: For their latest release, Jah Fingers has dipped into the digital catalogue of long-running Abi Shanti and Iration Steppas favourite TNT Roots. Both tracks showcased here were first featured on the British producer's "Raw Dubplate Warrior Style" CD-R way back in 2010. A-side "Elohim" is a particularly cosmic and spiritual take on digi-dub, with spacey electronic motifs and exotic synth sounds echoing away atop a slow and low bassline and head-nodding drums. Over on the flip, "Verse II" is a heavier and more dubbed-out affair where delay-laden keyboard riffs and similarly sci-fi sounds echo across another killer bassline and hypnotic beat.

Review: Vinyl-only imprint ZamZam Sounds is edging towards 100 releases and will surely hit that milestone at some point in 2024. This is release number 94 and comes courtesy of Innamind alumni and South London sorts Traces. A-side 'No One (Can Tell I)' is the more obviously dub-minded of the pair, with echoing vocal snippets, delay-laden drum machine cymbals and percussive hits riding a skeletal, sub-heavy 'riddim' that adds dubstep swing to a 21st century dub groove. Over on the flip, 'Listen' is a more orthodox dubstep workout - all jaunty but moody grime style stabs, fiendish wobble bass and hot-steppin' South London beats. As usual, the seven-inch is ultra-limited and comes housed in a hand-printed sleeve.

Track 1 (4:38)
Track 2 (0:10)
Review: Composer, sound designer, musician, artist. Vienna-based Ulrich Troyer has a number of strings to his bow, all of which have played into a world-building process deeply rooted in dub and sound system culture. Releases on the likes of Deep Midi Musik are a good reference point for newcomers. Here, though, we're in less structured and formalised places, with two pieces - well, one and a bit - of abstraction waiting for you to get lost in. 'Track 1' certainly comes with the kind of low reverberations and effects that call to mind huge speaker stacks in smoke-filled places. But it's also kind of deconstructed journey, it harmonises distorted beats and rhythms with beautiful melodic motifs in a way that's as innovative and beguiling as it is instantly pleasing. Flip it to find something we won't even bother trying to define, a celebration of the remnants of that opening arrangement, perhaps.

Review: Tubby Isiah is a father and son duo from Bristol that have been turning out fresh dub since 2019. Their Rising High album in 2020 was a doozy and now comes this special white label 10" on Dubwise Revolution called 'Rootsman Special.' The a-side is a real classic, steeped in tons of echo and reverb, with natty vocals and silky drum rotations over fleshy dub. It mixes up old school and new school sounds to make for something perfect to get lost in. The backside tune 'Elephant Strut' is as heavyweight as it sounds with rolling snares and bottomless bass.

Review: Devilishly dark vinyl-only business from Brighton bass bastion Turner: there's something positively Tobinish about "The Judge" thanks to its confident use of space and industrial clangs and whirrs. "The Hurst Manoeuvre" flips the vibe entirely with a steppy Afrobeat rhythm and minimal rhythmic elements playing the hook. Finally "Cella Dub" chugs with a stately 4/4 and chatty toast-up MC lines before the warm organs ease into the mix.

Review: Get your lugs around this, the first single from Leo Vidal & The Rayvelles, and you will soon be keen to know more. 'Haunted By Your Love' is a modern take on the West Coast oldies sound from Leo Vidal, a 70s soul singer from rural Virginia who brings his East Coast harmonies to croon about lost love. The Rayvelles is the duo of Fergal McBride and Tuck Nelson and are the creative force behind Echo Ray Studios in London, a space that channels the soul of Motown into contemporary music. Backing vocals are provided by Cassandra Dali and Marietta Smith while the flip has a remix by Call Sender who layers in some inviting dub weight.

Review: An outpouring of new dub bits have hit our shelves, and of course, legendary 7"s machine Pressure Sounds have something to add to the fore. Yabby You re-presses to a lesser-known track; 'Jah Over I' hears him sing of total devotion to god as flute and deep, thrombosis-inducing bass carves out wells of feeling in our stomachs. 'United Africa Dub' teases the sound of a people united in devotion; manifesting as flute, 16th-note fills, and soul-soothing trombones. Spring echoes boing into unifying space, despite the global vacuum of misunderstanding...

Review: The Vivian Jackson label has locked in this crucial reissue of a roots classic from Yabby U, a late Jamaican artist and producer who released it originally back in 1977. 'Chant Down Babylon' is a warm one with lazy and rolling drums and natty acoustic guitar riffs with Jah worshiping vocals and Babylon yearnings that unfurl up top with a real smoothness. On the flip, you will find the 'Chant Dub Mix' which removes the vocal chantings and allows the hats to hiss and the snares to take off like UFOs while the fleshy low end is couched in oodles of reverb.
