Polarity (part 1)
Polarity (part 2)
Confluence
Review: Fresh from curating a fine compilation marking 25 years of his admirable DiN label, Ian Boddy unleashes the latest in a long-line of collaborative works. He's previously released joint studio works alongside Chris Carter, Erik Wollo and Mark Shreeve, amongst others and here is in cahoots with Parallel Worlds member (and DiN semi-regular) Dave Bessell. In true ambient fashion, Polarity boasts a two-part, near 52-minute title track: an evocative, creepy and slowly shifting fusion of modular electronic bleeps, vintage analogue synthesiser melodies, immersive chords and - for shortish blasts amongst the aural weightlessness - bubbling beats. To round off the album, the pair drifts further into deep space ambient mode via the Pete Namlook-esque 'Confluence'.

Review: Before we get into it, let's just stop to consider what it must be like to be John Carpenter' son. A titan of horror, science fiction, and fantasy filmmaking who overcame early critical smiting to garner first a global cult following and more latterly reappraisal and recognition from the cinematic institution, while the reality of having this cultural powerhouse as a parent probably isn't along these lines, we like to think childhood was one long creative play session where imagination was only held back by the need to sleep.

Spurious point made, this latest addition to JC's musical oeuvre sees him team up with offspring Cody - a musician and composer in his own right - and long-time collaborator Daniel Davies for the score to the most recent reboot in the Halloween franchise. You can't touch a classic, of course, but what the actual movie lacked in originality the music more than compensates for, taking what was already an unsettling and chilling aural experience and modernising without fundamentally changing.

Review: Demdike Stare have hooked up once more with guitarist Jon Collin for what is their most psychedelic record yet. This trippy and vibrant dream is a record of concrete that's been performed on tape, pedals and a homemade fiddle known as the Swedish nyckelharpa. It manages to be both pastoral (no doubt a result of the fact that all artists hail from the Pennine moorlands) and of this world but also trippy and cosmic. It conveys a sleeping metropolis at night time but also a misty, rainy moor in the middle of winter. There are two halves to this album which both reward close listening with infinite sonic detail.

Review: There is plenty to draw you into this special release for Record Store Day 2024 before you even drop the needle on the record. The romantic cover with its overtones of balmy nights by the sea, the lo-fi design of it all, but also the slightly kitsch sub-title -The Romantic Guitar Of Amancio D'Silva. The music is just as good thankfully and is now available on vinyl for the first time since it was first released back in 1971. It is a cult fav that has often be listed for well over three hundred quid before now and was released as part of the Lansdowne Series, overseen by the influential Denis Preston, one of the UK's first independent record producers. All the tracks are instrumentals and include pieces by George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, and Hoagy Carmichael.

Review: Norwegian pianist and composer Eyolf Dale's The Space Between Two Notes is his seventh album on Edition Records. This album reimagines selections from his trio albums Being and The Wayfarers with some rich orchestral arrangements by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, all conducted by Miho Hazama. Blending jazz and classical music in unique ways, Dale focuses on the nuanced spaces between notes and so creates a horizontal, interval-based musical exploration. His trio, including Audun Kleive on drums and Per Zanussi on bass, achieves a delicate balance while integrating with the orchestra to deliver a seamless, expressive sound that makes for a genre-blurring musical vision.

Murmer Of The Bath Spirits
Cat: STREP 064. Rel: 12 Apr 23
Track 1 (23:31)
Track 2 (24:31)
Review: With an artist name like Dali Muru & The Polyphonic Swarm, and an EP title of Murmer of The Bath Spirits, the fact at least part of this record features a narrative about spiritual awakenings in bath houses, set to an eerie, atmospheric ambient soundscape, will surprise very few people. A 15-minute trip into the ether, noises and tones are as wet as they are warm, and the experience like heading out to uncover a faery land mystery.
Things get a little less specific on the appropriately christened 'Track 2', which moves us on from the dreamy quiet into a place that's more forceful, purposeful, harsh, perhaps even darker. Hypnotic loops set above staccato beats, grabbing hi hats and other elements as the track grows in ear worm qualities with each second.

Review: The long-gestating follow up to 1992's initial instalment, Black Aria II would finally arrive in 2006 after years of discussion from Misfits/Samhain horror-punk visionary Glenn Danzig, and further his exploration into the cavernous realms of modern classical dark ambience. Conceptually based around Lillith, the first wife of Adam, the material here is far more minimalist and starker than its gothic predecessor, while utilising a more varied array of instruments on top of the pre-established organ and strings, with more Eastern sonic influences to conjure a mercurial vision independent of the preceding volume. Complete with eerie chimes, chants and esoteric lamentations, the project marks one of Danzig's most intriguing works when compared to, say, his Elvis covers compilations, and offers a transportive, biblical, haunting narrative delivered almost exclusively via instrumental atmospherics and insidious gloom.

Review: It's always pretty refreshing to come across a collective that don't really want people to know they exist. Or at least they prefer to stay on the shadowy side of anonymity, contrasting the Insta-reliant (or should that be TikTok these days?) music age. A time when bands, producers and acts are often forced against their will to be present and visible and searchable, simply to have a chance of surviving. Let alone success.
De Leon are something of an enigma then. What we can say is these guys have been exploring field recordings, 'outernational rhythms' (their words, not ours), and the sounds that exist on the edges of dance music for some time. Informed by the elements - much of what's here invokes, or is the direct result of, interactions with air, wood, and metal - the result is essentially your own personal gong bath. So dive in, the sounds are lovely.

Review: Michele Soavi's Italian cult horror masterpiece is now 30 years old and has more than stood the test of time. With music composed by Manuel De Sica, the soundtrack masterfully captures the film's darkly comedic and eerie tone by blending gothic atmospheres with electronic grooves and jazz undertones. The score balances sinister and mundane moods effortlessly to perfectly complement the film's unique narrative. This special edition honours De Sica's genius and exemplifies his ability to create haunting yet melodic compositions that resonate with fans of both horror and film music.

Review: Adam Wiltzie is a member of Windsor for the Derby and Stars of The Lid, and alongside Christina Vantzou he crafted The Dead Texan back in 2004. It now finally gets a reissue which reminds us of its lush and weightless electronic and experimental charms. All 11 tunes are painterly in style with smeared synths and widescreen designs created using piano, guitar and electronic sounds. Piano motifs give an anchor to most of the tracks and there is spiritual gravity in many of them. Two decades old now but still relevant, the is a reissue well worth having.

Review: Deathprod is Norwegian experimental electronic musician Helge Sten, and for this project, he was granted use of a wealth of custom-made and specialised instruments that were dreamt up and manifested by seminal avant-garde composer Harry Partch. The instruments work in orchestra and are all tuned to just intonation. Where standard intervals are 12, this collective used up to 43 intervals. So, Sow Your Gold in the White Foliated Earth was written specifically to be used on this unusual setup and it sure gives rise to a magnificently one-off album of ambient.

Review: Talk about taking risks. Delmer Darion's jaw-dropping second album is like no other you'll hear this autumn. Trust us. Taking inspiration from legendary tales like Jules Verne's Voyages Extraordinaires, the record is split into two powerful halves. On the one side, industrial electronica and bewitching vocals meet in this abrasive but beautiful sonic place that owes as much to darkroom pop as it does experimental synth-dom. Blending elements of shoegaze, ambient and doom folk, it's a place thick with mystery and awe, wonder and, to a lesser extent, fear, and one you want to spend plenty of time in. Part two, meanwhile, does away with what small amount of convention was there before, and opts for an 18-minute spoken word masterpiece, rooted in Arthurian lore but at surface level focused on the 1919 sinking of HMY Iolair, off the coast of Stornoway.

Review: Last Epoch is an action role playing game that's been picking up some serious commendations since it arrived early 2024. For one thing, critics have lauded the open nature of its 'skill trees', which effectively means players can create characters with an entirely bespoke balance of talents and abilities, surpassing the vast majority of other titles in this genre. Others have praised the look of the title, with vivid detailing helping set the scene of this time travelling adventure. But what about the music? Well, for one thing Eric Desiderio has certainly embraced the atmosphere and the idea of Last Epoch. These tunes are epic, grand, transportive, ancient and futuristic all at the same time. It's an odyssey in itself, and one that really does elevate the overall playing experience. For some, that might be just enough to own a standalone copy of the score, too.

Review: Guillermo Del Toro's take on the 'Pinocchio' story - a stop-frame animation affair that relocates the action to 1930s fascist Italy - has been widely praised since it dropped on Netflix earlier in the year. Plenty of plaudits have been directed at Alexandre Desplat's soundtrack, which combines original music with brand-new musical-style songs. As this CD edition of the soundtrack proves, the Oscar-winning composer delivered one of his most magical scores to date, with picturesque, musically detailed instrumentals being joined by genuine 'earworm' songs performed admirably by the film's voice cast (see Ewan McGregor's rendition of 'Better Tomorrows', veteran British actor David Bradley's tender take on 'My Son' and Christoph Waltz's villainous version of 'We Were a King Once'.

Review: Taylor Deupree's next project is an ambitious one that finds the artist re-imagining his own well-regarded album from 2002, Stil., in an elaborate acoustic fashion. Sti.ll comes after a long-running collaboration between Deupree and Greyfade's Joseph Branciforte, an arranger and producer who has translated Deupree's focus on meticulously loop designs and hypnotic reputation into the world of chamber music. In place of the original digital sounds are clarinet, vibraphone, cello, double bass, flute, and percussion. The overall rhythm and tone of the original are maintained having been meticulously transcribed and then performed by an ensemble of New York musicians. It is a fascinating work that straddles two worlds to perfection.

It was originally conceived as a solo project and Deupree's abstract feedback loop-based compositions were shelved until discussions with the label prompted him to invite a collaborator. The result is a cohesive yet distinct collaboration that honours the original while evolving into something new so what began as an unfinished idea is now a full-fledged and thoughtful, layered exploration of sound.

Review: "Best described as a 20 minute 'mixtape' that embodies the connections between the concert hall, the club, and the sacred ritual", Aisha Devi's commission for the BBC Concert Orchestra is nothing short of wonderfully refreshing. In a world in which classical-electronic music collaborations have become as throwaway and cynical as the worst of Ibiza's super venues, this is anything but. New compositions are seamlessly blended into reworked ideas from previous Devi outings, with the sole goal to create this dense whole for us to get lost in, and push back against the conventions we expect when orchestras and synthesisers team up. If this isn't enough proof that your license fee is going on stuff that's actually worthwhile - and BBC News is just one part of a huge creative and cultural powerhouse - we're not sure what is.

One again here leader Oliver Doerell is joined by partners Roger Doring on clarinet and saxophone, and Alex Stolze on violins. The band continue to explore their notion of morbid instruments with an old tale machine and shadowy bass clarinet adding to the many layers of intriguing and mystery. The tracks here are ghostly and spooky, with 10 different journeys into sombre musical darkness that are never austere, but always fascinating. Timely, minimal and unusual, this is a quietly compelling masterpiece.

Review: Trying to figure out exactly when you'll stick on the soundtrack to Game of Thrones Season 7 isn't easy. But that's not to say Rabin Djawadi's epic score isn't something to behold. From the word go, this is adventurous stuff, rooted in classical but clearly inspired by visions of fantastical beasts, mythical lands and legendary quests. You almost feel like Cersei Lannister or Jon Snow or Daenerys Targaryen are about to knock on for their dinner. Like pretty much everything the Iranian-German film and TV composer touches - Clash of the Titans, Warcraft, Iron Man - there's little here you'd describe as subtle or understated. Even the more sweeping overtures sound like they were born for grand concert halls. So, providing you have the space at home, go for it.

Review: Recorded during a year in which Sholto Dobie spent time in Vietnam, Sweden and Lithuania, 23 lands on Infant Tree and finally lets us know what a full length album from one of the foremost avant-electronic ambient contemporaries would sound like. A startling debut, albeit one that you don't really feel startled by, more absorbed and elevated, it's an amalgamation of tone, noise, and sound, led by compressed air, tubes, reeds, flutes and timers. Physical instrumentals and things that create a tangible sense of space and place. Born in Edinburgh, but now based in Vilnius - a European hotbed of musical innovation, from throbbing techno to weirdo - 23 distills a number of factors into its immersive whole. In some moments, it's as though signals are being picked up from the deepest corners of our known universe. In others, we feel the intimacy of humanity gathered around sacred fires, the near-silence of our world amid vast emptiness beyond.

Review: Waxwork Records presents the iconic Body Double Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Pino Donaggio. Directed by Brian De Palma, this 1984 neo-noir erotic thriller pays homage to Alfred Hitchcock's classics, exploring themes of voyeurism and obsession. Starring Craig Wasson and Melanie Griffith, the film follows struggling actor Jake Scully, who, after witnessing a murder, delves into the seedy underworld of Hollywood's adult entertainment industry. De Palma, aiming to defy censorship, crafted an erotic and thrilling narrative. Donaggio's legendary score, including the standout track 'Telescope', masterfully blends orchestral grandeur with 80s electronic beats, perfectly capturing the film's neon-drenched ambiance and suspenseful atmosphere.

Review: Brussels label By the Bluest of Seas is a secret gem of the free jazz and improvisation scene that should get plenty more eyes on it in the wake of this new album from Delphine Dora and Mocke. it is their second long player after one on Okraina Records and it invites you to slip into a dreamstate as languid guitar strumming and drawn out vocals stretch to infinity. Melancholic arpeggios gently rise and fall, there is both tension and tears and a churchy architecture to this which places you at the centre gazing up in awe - no shock really given that it was recorded in an old church in the village of Mauzun in the Puy-de-Dome.

Review: You can't really imagine members of Dream Division doing anything other than being part of Dream Division. A band inspired and heavily influenced by the soundtracks, themes and moods of movies by directors such as Dario Argento and John Carpenter, theirs is a world filled with silver screen tension, sinister plots afoot, and incredibly cool noises. Legend of Lizard Lake is a case in point. Album title certainly no accident, invoking B-movie scenarios by the letter-load, the record is paced with fuzzy guitars, spine-tingling organs, Casio-choral lines, twinkled and chimed melodies, vast, open, almost-Western-yet-very-synthy open sonic frontiers, and the overwhelming sense that something, somewhere, might be watching us. Enough to make the Stranger Things scores sound like they've never seen Phantasm, or at least not recently, this is the whole retro-hued package.

Review: Morton Feldman's Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello from 2023 finally drops on vinyl double album and offers a deep dive into the avant-garde world of contemporary classical music. Feldman's minimalist compositions unfold gradually, inviting you into a grand realm of spaciousness and tranquility. The interplay between piano, violin, viola, and cello is masterfully executed and creates ethereal textures and delicate harmonies. Each piece unfolds with a sense of patience and introspection, captivating as it goes, and always with a sense of understated beauty. This album is a testament to Feldman's genius as a composer and is a must-have for enthusiasts of experimental music and modern classical composition.

Review: This album is an opportunity to hear the music of Philip Glass as you never have before. It is perfumed by Donald Joyce who has selected some of the most haunting of Glass's works to play on one of America's best tracker pipe organs. it means all the many nuances of Glass's music and its unique sonic characteristics are brought to life in a new way with this handcrafted instrument comprising 4861 pipes, four keyboards, and 70 stops. These works are said to reconcile Glass with Wagner - their music shares a neo-romantic vibe that is unique to them and eloquently augmented here with the source music take from as far back as the late sixties.

Review: Here's something you don't see very often: an admirable attempt to combine classical music and turntablism, with cheeky deck magician DJ Yoda joining forces with the Heritage Orchestra to perform a brand-new score from classical composer Gabriel Prokofiev. It's an interesting fusion that works well, mainly because the various scratches, juggles and doubles are not only performed using recordings of orchestral instruments, but also because they're an integral part of the classical performance. The set also contains 11 remixes of elements of the five-track score, all of which subtly take the source material in new directions via the addition of beats, electronics and experimental production techniques.

Review: If you've seen the TV series The Last Kingdom chances are you're pretty hyped about the idea of a feature length movie. Before that, though, we get Destiny Is All, an album made up of sounds from the super-popular Viking drama that stands out for many reasons. Whether you consider this dinner party music is a question of taste, but in the grand scheme of tunes made to score historical shows this is a cut above so much.
Forsaking tradition in favour of innovation, the arrangements here seem to transcend the period in which the narrative was set, and yet are so evocative of that age. A time of heroes, myths, legends, thunderstorms, rituals, runes, and an overwhelming sense of adventure, all those things are captured here but through the combination of orchestral bombast, choral voices, chants and electronic equipment.

Review: Dwell Time is the period between a person arriving at a shopping centre and leaving it. Today, the term also applies to the number of minutes you spend on an e-commerce site, and this record by Xqui and DVS AKA Dogs Versus Shadows. Muzak from another dimension, it's what elevator tracks might sound like if we favoured adventure and eccentricity over mindless pap simply designed to set the mood for us to spend. Arndale, the first chain of US-style shopping malls to open in the UK, with locations in Leeds, Jarrow, Bradford, Doncaster, Liverpool, Manchester, and a number of other spots up and down the country and into Scotland, lends its name to a number of tracks, adding to the sense that although inspired by faceless capitalism, the ambient, musique concrete-style tapestries of noise, lush soundscapes and drones here are personal stuff.

Review: Dumb Type Theater have been at the forefront of Japan's performance art landscape since 1984, although the years between then and now have seen some significant changes - culturally and in terms of the group. The death of Teiji Furuhashi, one of the central members, is just one example. A pivotal player in performances, he was often tasked with translating the instrumentation and arrangements of musician Toru Yamanaka into on-stage directions. Removed from that context, Yamanaka and Furuhashi's sounds still work incredibly well. There are aspects of Plan For Sleep that evoke the US avant garde of the time, perhaps reiterating the fact that the late-20th Century saw a closing of distances and a shared vision of where the future was heading among broad communities. Sound art, in the most musical and listenable sense.

Review: It's not hard to see just how ahead of their time Dumb Type were. And still are. Founded in Kyoto, Japan, in 1984, the artist collective looked to interpret and portray the changes they could see beginning to happen around them in society - specifically the start of the (information) technology age. Presenting work that took a dark and cynical view of the increasing importance and prevalence of equipment and digital in the every day, they do this though art exhibitions, performances and publications. Audiovisual installations have always been particularly prominent, and Every Dog Has His Day - one of two Dumb Theater albums previously only available on tape, now issued on vinyl for the first time - makes it clear music was never an afterthought. Credited to Toru Yamanaka, who wrote much of their heard work, and the late Teiji Furuhashi, who translated that onto stage, it's an avant garde essential.

Review: Stay With Me is an album by Past Inside The Present label head zake and T.R. Jordan from back in 2022. Now it has been revisited for a series of remixes by Dotlight and extra synth and field recording additions by zake that have all been pressed up to 180 gram purple vinyl. It is a work of immersive ambient beauty, with slowly shifting soundscapes defined by the most subtle of synth wisps, but each conveys a great feeling. Dutch guitarist Dotlights brings gentle beats to the likes of 'Infinite Sound' that add downtempo depths and late night romance to the already soothing original sounds.
