Marcello Cassanelli - "Fantasia" (5:02)
Zarenzeit - "Deep Work" (6:41)
Stefano De Santis - "Song For George D" (4:19)
Future Jazz Ensemble - "Freeway" (4:31)
Caruso - "Vestimenta" (6:06)
Review: Ten Lovers always manage to find a perfect sweet spot between jazz and house on the music it serves up. This new various artists' effort proves the point well: Marcello Cassanelli lunches the trip with groovy and nodding bass synths and airy vocal cries on 'Fantasia.' Zarenzeit then sinks into a bubbly groove with killer drums and sun-worshiping synths before Stefano De Santis drops some excellent broken beast on his squelchy synth workout 'Song For George D.' Future Jazz Ensemble takeoff into the cosmos and Caruso gets romantic on 'Vestimenta'.

Cat: FWM 707. Rel: 31 Aug 22
Callin Me (feat Voyce Lashae) (5:44)
Heels On (4:54)
Review: Although they've collaborated a lot over the last decade, the two tracks on this seven-inch single date back to Stefan Ringer and Chris Irvin's first joint studio session. Remarkably given their friendship and long working relationship, it's also the pair's first collaborative release. A-side 'Callin' Me', which features vocals written and performed by Voyce Lashae (real name Alicia Leshik) is particularly potent - a squelchy, deep, soulful and off-kilter chunk of broken beat/souful electrofunk fusion rich in jazz-funk synth sounds, undulating electronic bass and crunchy machine percussion. The pair's jazz-funk and P-funk influences are even more evident on flipside 'Heels On', a similarly soulful, house-style number that sits somewhere between Kaidi Tatham and Prince.

Unformidable/Call It Out (5:41)
Og (outro) (2:34)
Review: It's time to touch base with Errol and Alex Rita's Touching Bass here as the small but already great-sounding label hits release number eight with this fine Babylon Shuffle release. All six tracks from Last Nubian and Geneva's Sweet Fruity Brunch blend the sounds of inner city London with deep house and broken beats, starting with the party vibes of 'Call Yu Out'. 'In Da Morning/Shaka' (feat Achante) then has lithe and wispy synths shimmering over metallic broken beats with great vocals adding soul and 'Mango In Da Parish' is a b-side highlight with its beautifully delicate house drums keeping the dancefloor afloat next to jazzy flutes.

Vick Lavender - "Another Girl" (7:55)
Reekee - "Release Yourself" (7:03)
Shaka - "Between The Lines" (6:46)
The Mechanical Man - "She Got Love For Me" (6:33)
Review: Spanish label Mate is back with more excellent Deep House cuts from different corners of the scene. Vick Lavender repeats on the label this time with a vocal song feat. David Glen, simply magical. Italian finest Reekee which has just been released on Patric Scott's Sistrum presents a fusion of electronica and jazz with solid and elegant drums. Shaka from Switzerland offers us the groove and house vibes straight to the dancefloor. Nicola Alteri is The Mechanical Man, broken beat with sharp chords and R&B vocals combined perfectly. Don't let it get away!

Mugwisa International Xylophone - "Drop The Beat" (FYI Chris Acid Drop) (6:45)
Penya - "Search It Out" (Peter Croce 4AM Fix) (7:18)
Review: The gloriously off-the-wall On The Corner imprint is back, ready to tear it down with its predictably unpredictable chain of artists who reside firmly in the 'ODDS' space. Much like the previous releases, this is a mixed bag of outernational goodness and jazzy sensibilities, offering a release which truly blurs the lines of the extended 'dance' space. Our top picks in running order: Black Classical's "JeJe" is one of the most innovstive uses of percussion and organ that we've heard this side of year, Sam Jones' "Group As Salaam Construct" is probably THE definition of off-kilter thanks to its lopsided beat groove, and "Simba" by Daisho takes the whole polyrhythmic equation onto the minimal end of the spectrum. Quirky, refreshing and absolutely recommended new strains of floor music.

Miles Away (2:53)
Review: Given that both have eclectic musical tastes and play a multitude of instruments, it makes perfect sense that Misha Paniflov and Shawn Lee have ended up working together on a handful of seven-inch singles. 'Volkswagenesque', the opening gambit from the pair's latest "45", is another strong sonic statement. It boasts the sun-kissed warmth and laidback vibe heard on many of Lee's productions, with the duo wrapping glistening guitars, gravelly funk-rock solos, spacey synths and warming bass around a languid, percussion-rich rhythm track. You'll find more weighty, beautifully played percussion on flipside 'Miles Away', a more low-slung and dancefloor-ready affair that features some excellent electric piano playing from Lee.

Sigmund Jahn Bossa (2:52)
Aquaria (2:27)
Review: Fresh from dropping another essential seven-inch with his regular Sound Combo band, Misha Paniflov has joined forces with fellow multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee for a string of collaborative singles. This "45" sports two genuinely impressive cuts, each full to bursting with quality live instrumentation. It opens with 'Sigmund Jahn Bossa', a superb fusion of late 1960s library jazz (think Roy Budd's score for Get Carter and you're in the right ballpark), bustling bossa-nova and spiralling psych-funk. Over on the flip the pair continue to deliver lounge, influenced, tongue-in-cheek thrills via the cheap, Sideman drum machine rhythms, tumbling guitars, elongated Hammond organ chords and hazy backing vocals of 'Aquaria'.

Review: Stefano Cantini is a well-known saxophonist in the Italian and international jazz scene and Alexander Robotic is an equally respected talent in the world of electronic music. They now come together for a great new single that combines both of their backgrounds and skill sets. 'Francocco' is an elegant and fluid mix of authentic jazz sax and moody, melancholic chord with shuffling drums and weighty bass. It's one to bring great looseness to the floor. 'Frigiococco' is a more bright and driving version and 'Afrococco' then has a sensuous edge in the sax and funk in the basslines. Last of all, a Bottin remix brings a cosmic touch.

Passing Times (5:54)
Quali Kalimba (4:14)
We & The Sea (5:25)
Desired Unity (5:45)
Review: While Moodymann has an undeniable claim to being the world's premier jazz-house fusionist - though we doubt the Detroiter would think of his sublime dancefloor productions that way - the style was arguably pioneered and perfected by French producers such as Ludovic Navarre AKA St Germain. Paris may not be the jazz-house colossus it once was, but there are still new acts emerging - amongst them S Pazz, a debutant trio who here make their bow on Pont Neuf Records. Taking cues from DJ Gregory's Africanism project as well as homegrown jazz-house of old, the threesome flit between slowly unfurling, Cinematic Orchestra style numbers ('Passing Times'), picturesque, deep and melodious nu-jazz/organic house fusion ('Quali Kalimba'), Tourist-era St German (the frankly brilliant 'We And The Sea') and more exotic, percussion-rich jazz/house fusion ('Desired Unity').

Review: Sable Blanc crafts a rich, soulful sound here that blends jazz-infused grooves with the uplifting energy of house. New Places is a deeply personal record inspired by fresh surroundings in the South of France and the joy of fatherhood. Each track is a mix of warmth and introspection, from the sunrise-soaked melodies of 'Banana Candy' to the deep, rhythmic elegance of 'Remember the Feeling (of Love).' Collaborating with Wes Maples on 'Canvas,' Blanc layers saxophone and lush textures to stunning effect. This album is a testament to his evolving artistry and is an immersive soundtrack for life's most cherished moments.

For My People (5:04)
Let's Dance (6:38)
Abstract Jazz (4:53)
The Detroit Track (5:04)
Review: The assumption of quality that comes with Patrice Scott records is never let down, and so it goes on this latest refined transmission from his Sistrum label. 'For My People' is a sharp and snappy jam with some of the warmest bass you're likely to hear all year, but it's also smoothed out by mellow keys that provide the starry-eyed magic so intrinsic to Scott's sound. 'Let's Dance' is equally chill, albeit with a nagging swing you won't be able to resist bopping to, whether on the floor or elsewhere in your world. 'Abstract Jazz' offers up something a little more playful as Scott lets the beats come in a little crooked and the keys go darting off into intriguing harmonic configurations, but it's still sophisticated and elegant at its core. 'The Detroit Track' rounds the EP off with another sweet bumper which speaks to Scott's legacy as much as the city he hails from.

Henna Onna features on a bunch of these including the first three, which take in the breezy, bay melodic deep US garage of 'Drifting', the jazzy broken beats of 'Mindset' and the sunny breaks of 'Touch'. Elsewhere there are more loungey excursions like 'Loqsh' and funky Rhodes workouts like 'Drive For Gave'. 'Merci Shat' (feat Jehan & Henna Onna) is a perfectly smooth and dusty closer to round out a great EP.

Canadian-born, London-based DJ Jim Sharp was at the controls for this third volume and first up his edits 'Rubber Band.' On & On (1:46)
Classic (2:02)
Beach (1:42)
That Jazz (1:50)
Review: Fresh from making his first appearance on the party-starting Resense series, Shin-Ski (real name Shinsuke Taoka) delivers a rare, four-track "45" featuring a bunch of previously unheard productions from his jam-packed hard drive. He starts as he means to go on with 'On & On', a head-nodding hip-hop club cut crafted from bits of an old soul floor-filler, before smothering another toe-tapping beat with mazy electric piano solos on 'Classic'. Over on the flip, 'Beach' sees the Japanese veteran wrap a boom-bap beat and funky bassline in flanged guitar licks, while closing cut 'That Jazz' more than lives up to its descriptive title. Loose, groovy and musically rich, it should please anyone who loved Guru's classic Jazzamatazz productions.

Review: Japanese producer Shin-Ski turns his considerable skill to a pair of next level jazzy remixes of rap classics. First up is 'We' which has classic sunny chords and walking basslines overlaid with some fresh hip-hop bars and filled in with lush melodic curlicues and strings. This has pianist Hajime Yoshizawa and supreme vocalist Yukimi Nagano taking the stage on the delightfully easy up-tempo number, "Wind". On the flip Cal Massey's original recording "Quiet Dawn" is lifted right into 2007 with some great phrasing from Saxophonist Masato Nakamura, bringing back memories of the Archie Shepp version on his live "Attica Blues" recording from the seventies. Another highlight from Especial.

The Soul Feast (acappella EFXS) (6:54)
Review: In 2009, two years after the original version appeared on Somi's debut album "Red Soil In My Eyes", Joaquin "Joe" Claussell and Brian Bacchus joined forces as Soul Feast to remix Fela Kuti cover "African Lady". A decade on, Claussell has decided to reissue the package's most potent and percussive moment, the layered "Drum Dub" on a tasty seven-inch single. While there are key elements of Somi's original version present - the killer bassline, some delay-laden horns and fleeting glimpses of guitar - the mix is dominated by layered Afro-house percussion. This time round, the mix comes backed with an "Acapella EFXS" version, which contains all of Somi's superb vocal and is closer in tone to the duo's 2009 club mix. Like the A-side, it's superb.

Review: In recent years, Soopasoul has spent much of his time delivering funk-fuelled mash-ups and reworks under the Soopastole Edits alias. Here he returns to his roots, offering a pair of funk-fuelled cut-and-paste outings that should delight B-boys and B-girls the world over. The real killer is A-side 'A Wild Mad Beat', a hard funking affair in which a relentless bassline and crunchy, JB's style funk breaks are peppered with squally sax lines, hard-wired guitar licks, dreamy chords and jazzy flourishes. The producer makes use of his regular backing band on flipside 'Swing Down', an up-tempo funk-soul number marked out by delightful female lead vocals, punchy sax sounds and an undeniably restless groove.

His 'Back To Dilla' features the buttery tones of UK soul sensation Omar and pays tribute to the great beat maker that was the late J Dilla. Review: Str4ta is a joint project that includes Gilles Peterson and Jean-Paul Maunick aka Bluey, inspired by 80s Brit funk bands. In 2022, Str4ta released their third album Str4tasfear for Gilles's label, Brownswood Recordings and this 12" stamped white label offers two dance remixes of two tracks from Str4tasfear. For the A-side, 'To Be As One' is remixed by Venom with vocal by Theo Croker. This soulful house version is jazzy and slightly psychedelic, that gives off a tremendous 70s vibe to it, while the second side sees 'Lazy Days' is remixed by Wallace, adding a bit more of a Latin house feel and features Emma Jean Thackray on vocals. Both versions turn the originals into the perfect dancefloor shufflers for eclectic people. This is the perfect 12" for house, soul and Latin DJs to express their more jazzy side.

Nightfall (7" version) (5:59)
Review: During the disco era, there were numerous albums by one-off studio collectives that have since gone on to become sought-after items amongst collectors. One of those is undoubtedly the sole, self-titled album from Stratavarious, a 1976 set produced by sometime Philadelphia International Records arranger John L. Usry. This must-check "45" features two versions of one of the album's highlights: laidback, Latin-tinged, occasionally jazzy number 'Nightfall'. You'll find the extended seven-inch edit on the flip, where celestial female backing vocals and languid trumpet solos rise above a samba-tinged beat and luscious orchestration. Japanese producer T Groove provides an arguably even better A-side re-edit which is a little more groove-based while retaining all of the track's detailed, intricate musicality.

The prize fighter, however, is Submorphics' "Cosmic Blue". Armed with a flourishing string sample that sweeps with the right amount of melancholy, it's guaranteed to whisk your floor off to faraway places. There's some great dynamics at play, too, as the strings and beats are broken down to a near silence before dropping back into the mix at full force. D&B doesn't get much more beautiful than this.

Review: We're unsure who Walter is, but we do know that this EP is the end result of Swindle looking after his grandparents' house for a summer between international shows, and how he turned their living room into a studio fit for a horn section. The end result features some of the funkiest, jazz-jacked, unique instrumentals he's ever recorded (which is saying something). Muted trumpets, big piano slaps, heavyweight beats, infectious hooks and an overall sense of fun, Swindle remains the funk champion of dubstep-related music. For something a little more chill switch for the dreamlike "Summer Fruits". In terms of an appropriate seasonal release, the timing is terrible. In terms of everything else about the track, it's perfect. Essential Swindle.

The Creator Has A Master Plan (part 2) (6:24)
Review: Mark de Clive-Lowe, Shigeto and Melanie Charles build plenty of bridges between various different sound worlds on this new collaborative long player. de Clive-Lowe is a top-level composer and pianist, DJ and someone who himself joins the dots between jazz, hip-hop and dance. Charles is a jazz vocalist and flautist while Shigeto hails from Detroit and brings mad drumming and production skills. They came together in 2018 and have played all over the world and this album finds them reinterpreting works by the late great Pharoah Sanders including 'The Creator Has a Master Plan' (Part's 1 & 2) while laying down their versions of soulful house and hip hop in-between. Great stuff.

You Don't Know What Love Is
The Bird Song
Review: Between 1970 and 1995, tenor saxophone player Pharoah Sanders was recording for a number of different small independent jazz labels. One of those labels was Netherlands based, Timeless. This is a double LP compilation of those recordings...
He recorded three LPs for the label: 'Africa', 'Moon Child' and 'Welcome to Love'. Now Dopeness
Galore have compiled the highlights of these records available on 'Finest', a solid eleven track compilation.
These Timeless recordings were recorded in short periods of time, often a few days. 'Moon Child', for
example, was recorded in one night in 1989. Pharoah Sanders: 'The night we put this album together
we were all extremely exhausted. We had been touring when we arrived at this studio in Paris. The
session lasted all night.'
On his Timeless debut 'Africa', Pharoah Sanders (1940), intended or not, makes a link to the past. Not
only does he pay explicit tribute to his late mentor John Coltrane, he is also joined by pianist John
Hicks, who was part of Sanders' first ensemble in 1963. By that time Pharoah Sanders was living in
New York and was struggling to make a living, at times sleeping on the streets. It was joining
Coltrane's ensemble which brought Pharoah Sanders stability and wide acclaim. After Coltrane's
passing Sanders continued to work with his wife, Alice. On 'Welcome to Love', playing a series of
famous ballads, the thin, reserved approach is reminiscent of Coltrane. However, it is still marked with
Pharoah's trademark sound.

Review: Secret Night Gang are poised for greatness, beaming out of Manchester with a dazzlingly sunny jazz funk sound which is right at home on Brownswood. Fronted by Kemani Anderson, this supremely talented band have all the chops you could wish for, melting buttery Rhodes, honey-coated sax, slinky bass and liquid guitar lines into the pot and laying it on smooth. From upbeat party pieces to cosy, baby-making fodder, this debut album rightly places them in the cut and thrust of the contemporary jazz scene, and they brim with more than enough talent to take themselves very far indeed.

Review: Resistance Sonores is Modern Sun Records head honcho Skymark's sixth studio album. He has also released some great EPs on labels like Rush Hour, Neroli and Nsyde in recent times. On offer here are eight tracks of spiritual jazz, Brazilian fusion and soulful disco composed, performed and recorded by Marc Friedli himself. The Barcelona based producer claims "No hype, no indie elitism, no opportunistic network, no lobby in search of the fame, just soulful music!" And that's a good enough mission statement if you ask us. There are some quite lovely nu-jazz vibes on here, are reminiscent of modern legends Mark de Clive Lowe or Atjazz's finer moments and an enjoyable listen that will fuel some exotic daydream fantasies to get you by until next Summer. Highly recommended!

Review: The best thing about the Slope sound is that it is so hard to define. In their ten year existence as Slope, Honesty and his partner in crime Daniel Paul have constantly been eclectic. They have always been about uniting a multitude of influences while keeping the bass drum in the right spot. Around a dozen tracks from recent years have been selected for this remix album.

Review: New Zealand broken beat soul troupe Sola Rosa served up their sixth album late last year. Now redelivered on vinyl, the 180g weight really brings the earth to their rich funk and versatility. Flickering and flipping from heart-melting soul ("Both Of Us") to party-minded deep funk ("Till We Get It Together", "Till The Sun") via lolloping Amp Fiddler-style street soul ("Right On Time"), Magnetics is the sound of band who know each other's strengths and abilities intimately and play to them incredibly well.

Review: On this fifth artist album, New Zealand live act Sola Rosa continue to explore the endless creative pastures found between funk and soul. Coated with Cherie Mathieson's emphatic, loin-girding vocals and driven by a tight fusion from Anthony Spratton's band, it's an instant soul shakedown with real highlights found in the Bootsy-style "Wiggle" and the Tru-Thoughts style sleaze-feast "I'm Not That Guy." There's even time to tip a nod at their native dub cousins Fat Freddy's Drop with the rich and rootsy "Lions Den." Low and behold, indeed.
