Review: Calling a spade a spade and telling it like it is, the legendary Decca pans back over the archives to piece together a compilation that really takes us back to the very roots of the psyche scene and out into the glorious, technicolour, time-altering heyday of the movement. At a time when psychedelic sounds are having a big resurgence, it couldn't be better timed. This is way more than a cynical cash-in, though. Running through bands like the Small Faces, Moody Blues, Tintern Abbey and The Syn, many names here people either wouldn't associate with psyche today, or wouldn't have heard of unless they were very committed to diving into the deep annals of niche genres. Educational, and unarguably entertaining.

This one, Haunted Presence (which comes on lovely 'ghost power' silver vinyl) is packed with Halloween treats from across the label's vast span. It takes in ghoulish garage rock like Slim Martin's 'Haunted After Midnight', skeleton-rattling soul like Bambi Fodera's 'The Moon Turned To Blood' and some proto-metal mutations like Medusa's 'Unknown Fear' as well as haunting 60s rock like Angela Alexander & JD. Review: Hungarian outfit Budabeats proudly present Psyched Out Grooves From Hungary (1969-72), their latest compilation tracking the emergence and sure formation of psychedelic rock in Hungary. In the label's own words, "there were barely any drugs in Hungary to begin with", and we take this to be precisely the point. Psychedelia isn't a state that should rely on drugs as a crutch: no, there was something already dormant, but primed for the teasing, in the Hungarian psyche, that lent to its acquired taste for psych in the 60s and 70s. With contributions from "an undercurrent of smaller, semi-professional bands" who persisted in the shadow of a select few huge names, who dominated by dint of their sponsorship by the one, state-owned major label, this comp betrays an insider's knowledge and then some, with highlights from Non-Stop, Sampolo, Neoton, Apostol and Kex standing out as peak-quality Hungarian psych, despite none of these bands ever receiving a breakthrough. Such songs and bands were "the exception, not the norm", the "illusion of a scene".

The set chronicles the stories, challenges and victories of Louisville's gospel music community, highlighting a tradition deeply rooted in the city's Black churches. During the mid-20th century, many local grassroots labels captured and released key gospel recordings that formed a significant, yet nearly forgotten, body of work. Recognising the risk of these invaluable records slipping into obscurity, the Louisville Story Program, with generous support from The Owsley Brown II Family Foundation and Owsley Brown III Philanthropic Foundation, undertook the mission of finding, cleaning, and digitizing these recordings to ensure their preservation. 26 newly restored tracks are featured here and housed in a old school tip-on gatefold jacket that perfectly preserves this wonderful edition. Local favorite gospel groups such as The Ecclesiastics, The Solomonaires, The Gospel Motivators and The Singing Son of Zion are just some of the ones included in this package. This vinyl release is much more than just a compilation; it's a tribute to the enduring spirit of Black pride, joy and determination, preserving the rich legacy of Louisville's gospel music for generations to come.

Review: Wagram's always comprehensive compilation series is back with another deep dive into a specific sound, and this time it is French touch aka the Gallic take on early house that is in the spotlight. Plenty of the early pioneers feature like Bob Sinclar, DJ Gregory, Saint Germain and Tour-Maubourg, but so do some more recent explorers of that sound, namely Folamour whose gorgeously sampled and gospel-tinged opener 'Ya Just Need 2 Believe In Yaself' is an early highlight here. Review: Rocksteady is the kind of genre you know in sound before you know it in theory. Reversely, it's likely most music fans could point out a Jimmy Cliff or Skatalites track bursting from the speaker and have vague feeling that this is a distinct kind of reggae, but it takes a special kind of wisdom to know that this sound is called rocksteady, and was born of the cross-section of reggae and ska. Although its original upsurge lasted only a couple of years, rocksteady yielded several of Jamaica's most immortal songs, and - owing to the above genealogical scruple - is also probably the most contested of reggae formats with regards to who "pioneered" it, the innovations behind its irresistible beat claimed by a range of practitioners. Here LMLR compile close to 20 originals in the original rocksteady sound, amounting to what might be the yetmost serious wax-bound standoff between said still-undecided greats, still fighting for providential legitimacy.
