Washing Up
Cat: SKINT194. Rel: 12 Jan 11

Electro House
Tomas Anderson - "Washing Up" (Tiga remix)
Dave Clarke - "Dirtbox"
Goose - "Bring It On" (MSTKFT JFK remix)
X-Press 2 - "Lazy" (feat David Byrne)
Review: Skint cull four of their biggest hits from last years fifteenth anniversary comp for this twelve inch that demonstrates the breadth of their output. Side A pitches Tiga's classic 07 electro reworking of Tomas Anderson against the industrial techno pressure that is Dave Clarke's "Dirtbox". On the flip you get a reminder of when MSTRKRFT were actually quite good with their thumping rework of Goose which is an uneasy bed fellow for X Press 2's chart bothering deep house collab with David Byrne. These tracks have been out of print for ages so it's nice to get another opportunity to grab them on vinyl.

Autre - "Seiryu" (7:02)
Kryptic Universe - "01309 Stairways" (9:04)
Owen Jay & Brian James - "Chordless" (5:25)
Review: Given the success of the first two installments of the Editions series, it's little surprise to see XDB put together a third volume for his Metrolux imprint. He's assembled another crack team of international contributors, too. Autre and Xinner join forces on opener "Nebula", a fine combination of low-slung techno drums, restless electronics and deep space sonics. Autre goes solo to deliver the fluttering, late night hypnotism of "Seiryu", before Kryptic Universe steals the show with "01309 Stairways", a superb chunk of rolling intelligent techno that features an extended ambient intro. Owen Jay and Brian James round things off with the distorted drum machine hits and woozy riffs of "Chordless" (which, to be fair, is an accurate title).

Alexny - "People Says" (5:17)
Sould Out - "City Gal" (5:18)
Workerz - "Since You Came" (5:39)
Review: Sundries' Disco Goodies series, which rounds up the best of the label's digital releases and presents them on multi-artist EPs, reaches its fourth instalment. It hits home hard from the start, where Berobreo's 'Soul Driven Dynamics' provides an attractive mix of 1970s orchestral soul samples and rubbery deep house beats. Experienced re-editor Oldchap brings the goods with a lightly tooled-up and beefed-up rework of an orchestra-sporting disco gem ('Coloridos'), before X Gets The Crest delivers a percussive, hot-stepping and filter-smothered re-wire of a much-loved Cymande classic ('Still Come Home'). Over on side B, Alexny's heavy disco-funk re-edit ('People Says') is joined by a hazy and horn-heavy revision courtesy of Sould Out ('City Gal') and the pitched-up disco loop-funk of 'Since You Came' by Workerz.

Review: "Acid Was Conflict - 7th City Classics Volume 1" is an absolutely essential techno release. This is the first record in a series of three limited edition re-issues, with selected tracks from the legendary 7th City Detroit catalogue. This monumental re-release features the amazing "Acid Wash Conflict" by the master Claude Young under his Brother From Another Planet alias. This has long stood as a blueprint for minimal music of today, played regularly by the likes of Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos and Dan bell etc.

Review: Few producers enjoy the exalted position that Current Value does. And since he's moved back from his hectic crossbreed creations to more traditional tech drum & bass sounds, you can really hear the detail in every element. Xtrah is a man of similar frequency obsession, making this Cyberfunk release a really natural and honest project. Highlights include the cymbal-splashing twist on the triplet arrangement ("Escape") and the insane blocky snare funk on the total sci-fi freak out "Matchfit". With all other tech territories explored in between, one could easily argue this to be Cyberfunk's best release so far.

Dialect & Kosine meets The Dub Pistols - "The Ganja VIP" (feat Rodney P)
X-Nation - "No Need To Tell Ya"
Review: The classic blend of ruff London MC and heavyweight junglism abides on this second release from the Jungle Alliance camp. Dialect & Kosine line up on the A-Side offering up an authentic official VIP remix of "The Ganja", a Rodney P vocalised track from the fourth Dub Pistols LP Rum N Coke. In original form this 2009 gem was naturally a Caribbean blessed hip hop skanker so it's ripe material for a jungle makeover from Dialect and Kosine, who keep Rodney's iconic gruff London delivery amidst a barrage of classic junglist percussion. On the flip, new Jungle Alliance signee X-Nation offers up a nice 21st Century touch up of a well loved 90s Jungle track with "No Need To Tell Ya".

Review: Tresor again opens its vault, this time skipping the '90s inspired techno for four old school house cuts from Deepside, Santonio, Xperiment and AES, all of which featured on DJ Deep's excellent Kern mix CD. Deepside opens the first volume of Kern rarities with an acid based drum dance in "III", whereas Santonio plays on looped keys and jumbled strings in "Amnesia". Xperiment hits up a plodding bass line alongside a Beverly Hills Cop sounding melody and jacking drums, and AES brings the only vocals to the EP with a classic cut of Chicago house.

The Irish label have featured plenty of exciting talent in the past, including Joey Anderson, Imugem Orihasam, Eduardo De La Calle, so we know that they can throw together an excellent variety of artists to form one hell of an EP. This time we have: Evigt Morker with the supremely dubby and laid-back "Langbro Kyrka", "Once Upon A Time In A Dub" by G-Prod, "ison" by Vidab and Curle members Hiver, and a cracking piece of percussive grit-house by the one and only XDB, always up for it and never shy of a fat groove.

First up is label mainstay Carl Finlow, who once again exercises his considerable production prowess with a lithe and limber body popper, while Plant43 takes things stripped and sinister with the deliciously dark 'Forcefield Deactivation'. Review: The man like Inkswel seems to be in the midst of a production purple patch right now and we are not ones to complain, especially when he's firing off little nuggets of lopsided funk like the one that lines the A Side of this Omega Supreme 7". The puntastic "Delaide Reaction" sees Inkswel teaming up with his highly rated fellow Australian Andras Fox and features the vocal talents of the NJ Disco legend Gary Davis (those not familiar with the name need to attend Disco Night School!) This sun soaked slab of sunken boogie is complemented well by the flipside cut "Sunset on Sunset" by XL Middleton which lays on the p funk vibes heavily and snaps to a satisfying beat. As with all Omega Supreme drops, this one is pretty damn special.

Review: XDB's Metrolux imprints primes a second Edition release, matching the inaugural transmission for illustrious, international contributions. Jitterbug opens proceedings with the excellent "Radio Theme" rolling deep through the dub funk jack that pervaded his superb Uzuri release of last year, whilst Hamburg is represented in the shape of "Skyrocket", an incessantly fizzing and hypnotic percussive number from Marc Holste under his Markson alias. Metrolux reach out to Japan on the flip, with Tokyo based Naoki Shinohara dropping a dubby, melancholic ode to Kagoshima club Timeless, whilst XDB hangs back and finishes the release in requisite style on "Cielop".

Review: Two distinctive musical worlds collide here as City Pop meets with West Coast Boogie and a hint of synthwave jazz-funk for one of the coolest sounding records we've heard for a bit. Kumoko featuring XL Middleton are the artists behind it and the original 'Moonlight Magic' is all soft-focus melodies, wispy pads and filtered vocals over a killer boogie bassline. After the Instrumental comes the more laid back and sun-kissed smoocher that is 'Take To The Sky', and an instrumental of this one is also included.

Review: French label Girouette Records was created, they say, "to make unexpected links between different musical horizons that seem not obvious to gather at first sight" and their first release really sets the bar high. Exposition 3 finds French minimal synth icon Philippe Laurent sharing sides with US act Xeno & Oaklander for a triplet of sharp electro experiments. Laurent's two A-side contributions date back to his early '80s period of experiments with electronics and if you are a fan of his work collected by Minimal Wave you will adore these. "Rapide 1" is a particularly wonderful composition! The flip features Liz Wendelbo and Sean Mc Bride's 2013 take on "Exposition 3", less a cover version and more a live reinterpretation.

"LX2" and "LX3" offer fascinating insights into how these two operate, showcasing their rare ability to imbue stripped back, pummelling concrete techno with a deeply cerebral atmosphere. "LX2" contains a Ruskin-esque granite kick augmented by relentless hats and muggy atmospherics; flip over for "LX3" which impresses even more, with Lucy and Xhin coming up with a steely techno throb full of twisted metallics and scorched synths. Review: After a string of EPs on labels like Important Records and PAN, it was inevitable Japan's Kouhei Matsunaga and Toshio Munehiro would end up on the Powell's Diagonal imprint - now a nest of the coldest in experimental, industrio-techno. There's a bit of everything on here, from the broken, percolating percussion of "218"; the gorgeous bassline supporting "845", and the freaky pseudo-acid of "Whispering Gallery". To finish things off, both literally and not, "234" is a noisy, shattered and uber distorted cut, whereas "The Spiral Of Babel" is a rolling, fast-paced drum shuffle fitting of any sci-fi flick. An excellent EP and a fine addition to the Diagonal dynasty.

Review: The latest from Burnski's Vivid label is a three way split, six track affair with Oldboy, Xander and Longeez each dispatching a pair of tunes in the label's trademark roughneck breakbeat style. - Oldboy kicks off proceedings with the speedy junglisms of 'Blackbird' before the chunkier, funkier and a little more traditionally paced breaks heft of 'Walrus Party'. Xander's 'If I Tell EM' and 'Get To The Point' both plays off two step rhythmic twists and menacing bass against dreamy synths and more breakbeaty flourishes, before Longeez closes proceedings with the slightly sparser 'Evermore' - super sharp hi hats and echoing rasta dialogue - and the appropriately spinback-peppered 'Wheel Up'.

"Key Free" is a more upbeat, tech-minded workout with jazzy intentions... The frenetic synth meanders underpinned by a really creepy, ominous synth bass tone that wouldn't have gone amiss on Garnier's F-Com back in the day. For remix pleasure, "Cosine" enjoys a psychedelic twist from Lauer and a crunchy, angular electro b-boy flip from Elastic Dreams man A Sagittariun. Powerful.

Review: Freshly minted label Dance Regular has pushed the boat out for release number one, pulling together no less than six tracks on a multi-artist extravaganza. James Rudie steps up first via the Rhodes-laden, off-kilter deep house dustiness of "Good Fry Up", before Szajna doffs a cap towards 2000 Black on the deep and musically rich broken beat business of "Break In My Back". Captain Over's "No-Look Nutmeg" is a suitably bass-heavy bruk workout laden with 8-bit electronics, while Xtra Brux's "Somebody" brilliant joins the dots between broken beat and two-step garage. Elsewhere, Trev's "For You Around Me" is a sumptuous chunk of summery and soulful dancefloor bliss, while Ishfaq's "Hypnosis No 9" is jazzy, synth-heavy and wayward in the best possible way.

Side a-begins with some fresh four-four grooves no least the opener from the legend that is Perception with Andy G and S.R.'s dubby 'Let's Go' remix. Conspiracy Dubz keeps it bumping with the old school feels of 'Musical Rush' and on the B-side it is more of a 2-step sound that emerges with jazzy melodies and female vocals. Groovy D's 'Another Chance' is the real standout for us with its classic vocal sample worked into a nice kinetic rhythm.

Mustafa's own 'Delphic Times" is a sleek, emotive cut decorated with piano trills and immersive chord pulses, while XDB gets into a decidedly scientific mindset with the off-kilter synth lines that shape out a wild rhythm on "Violi". Review: The latest transmission from Rush Hour's ever adventurous No 'Label' series comes from an artist known simply as X, with "Lessons from a Spiritual Dimension....." etched on the run out groove for those seeking some guidance. Word on the grapevine is these four cuts are the work of a certain shy and retiring producer with distinctively peppery hair but these rumours have not been confirmed. Certainly the playful 90s rnb sampled wedged deep into the core DNA of the loving drift of the second track here is most reminiscent of one of LIES lesser spotted artists. Elsewhere "Track 3" sounds thrillingly like 3 different house cuts being played over one another whilst the closing track delves into more abstract territory and is reminiscent of a recovered field recording made deep into the night at Chicago institution Muzic Box.

Review: The Peoples Potential Unlimited quest to unearth the Atlantic boogie that time forgot continues unabated - this time reviving a1983 gem from Detroit's The X Man. Wrapped in an excellently presented sleeve, the somewhat mysterious X-Man supposedly had what should have been a fruitful musical career cut short by a 30 year stint in a Motor City psychiatric hospital. This was no obstacle for PPU however, who were granted the master tapes to press up "That Body" and "Fired Up" at 45rpm on a nice fat twelve! There's an undeniable funk swagger to "That Body" which sounds like Jimmy Edgar if he was a child of the 70s - in a word, killer. The B Side proto hip-hop bump of "Fire It Up" proves to be just as infectious, driven by some loose limbed synth flourishes.

Time (Riva Starr remix)
Time (Feygin remix)
Review: Skint's big hit makers X-Press 2 return with another collaboration driven cross-over anthem. With British vocalist James Yuill on board, "Time" signals a return to the dancefloor for the trio. Backed up by remixes from the seemingly unstoppable Riva Starr and New York based producer, Feygin who is a particular favourite of X-Press 2 themselves, this is a strong package that does the emotive original every bit of justice.

Famous vocal collaborations litter X-Press 2's back catalogue - who could forget David Byrne's vocals on their number two hit in 2002, their collaboration with Kurt Wagner on "Give It" and 2008's partnership with Rob Harvey on the club smashing "Kill 100." This time, the trio team up with British folktronica vocalist, James Yuill. His skills as both a songwriter and vocalist have made him the perfect fit with X-Press 2's sound. Emotive and heartfelt, the vocal performance sets the track alight and when added to driving basslines and big chords make it an instant dancefloor hit.

The first remix comes from up and coming New Yorker, Feygin who strips the track back to the bare essentials and lets the vocal do the work. Adding ample effects to the aforementioned vocals, he creates a haunting atmosphere that pulsates its way from beginning to end. Riva Starr's first of two reworks is big room, driving house remix. It is full throttle territory, perfect for peak time madness on the dancefloor. His dub version carries on in much of the same vein but removes the vocals making the driving sub bass the star of the show.

He's in typically funky form on his first ever vinyl outing, offering up two killer cut-and-paste workouts via a cheery Bomb Strikes "45". Both cuts are carefully crafted from largely familiar loops and samples, but tastefully enough done to ward off any accusations of cheesiness. A-side 'Mirror Ballin' is particularly potent, with the West Country producer peppering a tooled-up version of a familiar mid-tempo disco-funk groove with all manner of much-loved vocal samples. Review: MELMAK's new 12" is entitled All Stars: The Rave Years which gives you an idea of what to expect. These are high-tempo, dense and rave ready sounds from the drum & bass vanguard. There is plenty of space out cosmic energy to the exploratory leads of X Termal's 'Tragnal Kozze' then 'What If' (The Doulo Klan edit) is a tightly coiled stepper. Bugger lays down a hyper speed rhythm with drilling bass and slapping hits on 'No Silence Now' and Umbra's 'The Big Dumb' is a real slow-motion churner with textural synths and alien sound designs. All four are ready to get the party going in different ways.

Saturn V - "[Kontrol] Your Mind"
Review: Proper old-school techno acid house banger on the mighty Relief records. This is a real rugged, banging EP of throwback 303s, pounding drum machines, and mental dancefloor dynamics. "Time Elevation Rhythm" is a heavy dose of sleazy acid and droning synths over some 808 drums - love those handclaps - while "Zeta 1" builds up with some Art of Noise-ish robo-vocal samples. "Kontrol Your Mind" wiggles into your brain with its old-school drums and cut-up vocal samples for a real dark banger.

Review: The excellent Krill imprint drops its fourth EP with a Berghain-y and rock-steady four track by X501. "X501.3" falls somewhere between a Henning Baer and Dettmann production as a compressed groove thrums under industrial and percussive hits and subtle dubby chords. "X501.5" sees acid meet big room techno while the sustaining lead in "X501.7" builds into whirlwind of cyclic sound and composition.

Review: Pacific House pioneers Legowelt and Xosar surface for air as Xamiga for a second time, appearing on the M Division with the dinky blue vinyl Oceania 10". Mr Wolfers is no stranger to the Melbourne imprint, having graced M Division on several occasions under his Nacho Patrol banner, and it's great to see him and XOSAR offered the chance to expand on last year's debut Xamiga release on Rush Hour. As you'd expect from the nautical stylings, there's a healthy amount of Drexciyan influence at display across the three tracks, mixed up with spectral, self styled 'Ghost Haus' that XOSAR has been developing across her solo releases. "Atlantis Force Code" is a considered highlight, sounding like Daphne Oram trying her hand at jacking house.

Review: The same week as Answer Code Request's new 12" on Ostgut Ton gets a release, the regular Berghain DJ turns up on XDB's new one for Dolly, of course run by Panorama Bar regular Steffi. ACR owns the A1 with a remix to the EP's title track, with the German seemingly plucking out his favourite loop-section of the original and pumping it full of a solid sounding techno low-end like only the Germans know how. XDB's version is long-winding, groovy and noticeably lighter in comparison, while on the B-side Detroit techno and Chicago house influences are abound, most notably in "Tonik", while "Liberty" is a stomping and very funky house classic

Review: Kosta 'XDB' Athanassiadis is Thuringen's finest, there's no doubt about it. When he's not a tennis coach (!) he's either playing one of his legendary DJ sets at some of Europe's best underground parties, or in the studio crafting gems like these. Starting off with the deep and spacey "Teremi", he then ventures into the sublime with "Begra" featuring sturdy bass (via dense tom drums) and swirling and immersive pads; this one's great! On the flip is the loopy and tripped out "Equiq" with a persisting vocal sample over muted organ stabs and rusty rhythm programming. It's the kind of track you could imagine Zip playing up at Panorama Bar at 9:00 on Saturday morning; wicked! 180g vinyl only.

Review: XDB makes a welcome return to Sistrum with Frocks, a 12" offering that demonstrates quirkier side to the Greek producer's palette than Espac, his 2008 debut for Patrice Scott's label. Lead track "Frocks" commences with some wonderfully angelic chords and unintelligible vocals before veering into a hypnotic tunnel of droning bleeps that touches on infinity before those chords re-emerge in unison with some rigid claps. Just as your senses become adjusted to this about turn into dancefloor territory, XDB elects to end the track in all too abrupt fashion. On the flip "Modula" opts for a more stripped back approach, with some insidious acid licks dominating proceedings whilst Patrice Scott adopts a reflective mood himself on a seductive remix of the title track.

Review: Aside from dealing with distribution matters, Germany's Diamonds and Pearls also puts out killer house and techno music on its own self-titled imprint. The past has seen releases by the likes of Dettmann, Efdemin, and Kassem Mosse, among others, and this time they've brought together house deviant XDB and the younger Even Drones onto one slab of wax. XDB drops some of his familiar blend of minimal funk on "Mitos", which is expertly rewired by Even Drones into a sparser, more broken cut. The flipside contains another original from XDB, "Enpii", which is moodier and more molecular than its predecessor; and once again, ED features on rewiring duties, moulding the original into a deep-space belter with a driving groove and one hell of a hook.

Kassem Mosse & Xdb - "Omrish"
Review: The label arm of Berlin distro emporium Diamonds & Pearls well and truly flex their A&R muscle here with a killer second release of 2012 that pairs the monumentally gifted talents of XDB and Kassem Mosse with suitably worthy results. Deep Space boss XDB helms the A Side himself with a wonderfully rough hewn analogue house transmission "Ekatem" that feels like it slip into infinity without losing any sheen. If a combination of rattling percussion, discombobulating synths and rusty sounding square basslines appeals to you then you will find much joy with "Ekatem". Listen to "Omrish" blindfolded and you'd guess Mosse was involved given the gritty, smudged out nature of its execution, a wonderfully hazy melange of chiming melodic tones and off the grid percussive touches that appears to float in stasis and proves all too intoxicating on the senses.

It was under this project that the duo first surfaced as back in 2007, inaugurating the Restoration label and having since appeared in various forms with the likes of Steffi and Blawan in the ensuing years, Lucretio and Marieu have deemed the climate right to revisit Xenogears. Whilst details on the forthcoming LP Lost Artemis are yet to surface, this Multiverse Remixes 12" is a fine appetite wetter. The tightly sprung original is complemented well by remixes from Vinalog and Third Side, with the former's a highlight along with Madteo's self styled NY Blows-Wave remix which offers some typically left of centre multi tracked beat down.

Review: Fledgling UK techno imprint Tabernacle heads to Berlin for their third release, inviting Xenogears aka The Analogue Cops to drop four tracks of raw, sometimes harsh, sometimes odd but always unadulterated machine funk. There's a lazy swagger to the opening of "crc04" that grabs you as soon as the heavy lines of synths drop over the stuttering drum machine crunch. It's the mid section crescendo of piercing sonics and crashing layers of percussion that add that extra layer of overwhelming sensory menace. In contrast, "Mino" ditches the menace for a smoother retro Detroit electro flex reminiscent of vintage Model 500, right up to the upwards sci fi synth freakery. The B Side opens with the sonic booms of "Livex15" throwing out elastic synth swirls over a big rusted beat, as industrial pressure grows beneath with ominous intent. In a word, magnificent! This excellent and rather limited release - only 200 copies pressed up - finishes on pulsing and quirky form with the subaqueous techno funk thrust of "Dreamsequence."

Review: Last seen together on a Sex Tags Mania record circa 2009, the XI pairing of Fett Burger and SVN join forces once more for some typically trippy house and techno cross pollinations on the latter's cultish SUED label. Elder scholars of the SUED way will know that one does not dither when it comes to a new record on the label but interested newcomers will still find this two track 12" a perfect introduction into the label's understated ways. Essentially two variations on the same theme, cursory listens to "Beat Session" and "Dub Session" will not be enough to let their subtle charms take full effect. By the time you've had three listens you'll be proclaiming this your favourite record in some time.

They must have some fixation on the number 11, as their previous drops on Going Good and Sex Tags UFO were given the eleventh catalogue number and now this new joint appears on SVN's own SUED label as SUED11. By rights then it should have come out in 2015, but here we are and whatever the reasoning, the music is what matters, and it's predictably delicious. From springy boxjam house business to blown out after-hours cruisers, tweaked out electro techno and blissfully blurry Balearic, there's plenty of ground covered here by two artists with an imperious track record and impeccable taste.

Review: Gifted Culture Collective member and occasional S. Moreira collaborator Xinner has decided to inaugurate a new alias, Robotron, via a first EP for ESP Institute. The man-machine's first missive, "Dream Resonator", is rather delightful, and sees him warp chiming, crystalline synthesizer melodies and glassy-eyed IDM style chords around an inventive and entertaining rhythm track that sits somewhere between Drexciya style electro and jazz-fired broken beat. The same rhythmical dexterity is also at the heart of similarly rush-inducing flipside "Ice", where bolder melodies and chunkier bass catch the ear alongside some suitably futurist electronics.

Review: Sao Paulo deep house producer Xique-Xique's Xaxoeira EP was originally released in 2014 but now sees a deserved vinyl release. Starting out with the very All Day I Dream-ish "1542" which is complete with lush xylophone melodies, woozy synths and smooth beats, he's then into the slow burning title track, which comes complete with cosmic atmosphere and sultry French vocals; just perfect for drifting. Review: A wonderful curveball record from Dan Snaith's Jiaolong imprint here as Shangaan Electro pioneer Nozinja comes correct as Xitsonga Dance. It's been roughly three years since that illuminating Shangaan Electro compilation from Honest Jon's appeared, providing many with a fascinating insight into this niche Sowetan dance music. Kudos to Snaith for securing these two tracks from Nozinja, which further demonstrate the singular joy of the Shangaan sound - barmy keyboard tones, demo track beats and infectious melodies combined with pitched vocals, and, on "Hoza" the sound of a barking dog. An excellent twelve that can't help but encourage to revisit that Honest Jon's compilation.

Fresh from conjuring the beats on Monique's album, here he is dropping two blistering slippery jams on Eddie Pendergrass.
