Review: Lol Hammond is a former member of Spiral Tribe and early live techno act The Drum Club who now makes music on his own as Wah Wah Planet. Back in 1990 is when he penned this fantastic five track Balearic house EP alongside Russell Crone and with female vocal contributions from Lucy Sian. It very much lay out an early blueprint for UK street soul and the opener on the A-side 'Jewel' explores a romantic theme with hooky pop lyrics. Things get more left of centre on the 'Love FXU' with three trips into a smoother sound world perfect for sun kissed island dancing and with influences ranging from early breakbeat and trip hop to elements of dancehall music.

Review: This one was only reissued back in summer but such its is enduring appeal and superb impact once played through a beefy sound system, here it comes again. It is another top 7" version of Fatboy Slim's megahit 'Praise You', in authentic rocksteady style, performed by Jamaican vocal group Junior Dell & The D Lites, who've been active since the 1960s. "Mi haffi praise you", gleefully intones Dell, against an impressive interpretive backdrop of jubilant brass and cabareting bubbles. The B-side procures a more curious and laid-back instrumental, Woodfield Rd Allstars' 'Cool Cool Runnings'. Do not sleep.

Review: A follow-up to last year's successful compilation 'Faith Presents: Ain't That A Groove', is given to us by the London-based label Faith ran by DJs Terry Farley, Stuart Patterson and Dave Jarvis. The high energy house party sound kicks off with Nolan who features the legendary house voice of Sir. Robert Owens. Hilit Kolet isn't shy with the extended remix of 'POV Siren'. This sound is synonymous with Feller and Heller DJ sets of the mid 90s. Philippa's extended remix of 'The Night' by Roach Motel backs that one up with another prime floor filler with hardly any let up. Lastly, Terry Farley, Wade Teo & Kameelah Waheed brings he deep groover "Dancing After Dark" to the party. These tracks will have you and the nightclub crowd out dancing all night.

Review: Waajeed's Memoirs Of Hi-Tech Jazz came out on Tresor in late 2022 as a definitive statement from a true Detroit original. Following the Motor City Madness remixes 12" which accompanied the album drop, here comes a follow up single shining fresh light on the project via a whole new set of remixes. There's no need to introduce a legend like Mark Broom - a stalwart of UK techno who brings his decades of experience to 'Right Now' as he remains in an enduring purple patch. Staying in the UK but coming from a whole different angle, Yazzus brings her upfront flair to one of the most compelling, emotionally charged pieces on the album, 'The Ballad Of Richard O'Bryant'. Then it's left to Jensen Interceptor and Assembler Code to link up for a remix of 'Memoirs Of Hi-Tech Jazz', complete with some of Black Nix's original poetic flow over the top.

Their latest 45 rpm is from 1975 when r&b producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Pete Warner dropped his one and only single 'I Just Want To Spend My Life With You'. It has aged well and become ever harder to find as well as expensive on the second hand market so this is a welcome reissue. Review: Chicago outfit Wavelength tap into the funk traditions of bands like Parliament here with a seductive and rather sleazy new EP for Soulistic 360. The whole thing has been arranged by Windy City soul innovator Rahaan and comes on white marbled vinyl 12". Opener 'Can You Handle This Funk' is slow, steamy, sensuous with its languid kicks, live, raw drums and drawled vocals all luring you into the groove. The remix is a subtle teak of the original and on the flip is 'Kemetic Dance Party' which brings more Afro style drums and some bold sax lines to get things going in a more energetic way.

Review: Joe Babylon's cultured US label Roundabout Sounds has never rushed music out but when it does serve up new material it is always timeless and top quality. This latest EP is the first installment in the new All Hands series and it features some real house heavyweights. Frits Wentink kicks off with the mystic and lo-fi depths of 'Jellyfish, then DJ Aakmael layers up his soft edge chords and cuddly kicks drums with some muted horn motifs that bring the romance. The label head brings some upright drums and spoken word lyrics for a beautifully warm sound and last of all Detroit royalty Rick Wilhite links with Jon Easley for a final blissed-out and breezy deep house day dream.

Review: Six Minute Mile has rightly got plenty of attention for its first few outings and their early good work connotes with this eight 7". It's from Ohio's Wesley Bright who has joined forces with The Means of Production and New York's Ben Pirani, and is a lovely mid-tempo roller that reminds of balmy summer nights. The tune comes in two parts and opens with lovely Rhodes chords that are a great foundation for the tenor vocals of Wesley. Then come plenty of irresistible hooks and the rousing vocals sing of love and devotion like all good soul sounds should.

Review: Westcoast Goddess is an enigmatic producer who betrays a love of 90s house and tech and golden-era r&b on this fresh new EP for Intrinsic Rhythm. It is a perfect mix of quality electronic production and good-time vibes: the loose, tumbling drums of 'Fallin' come with wispy synths and heart-aching vocal samples. 'Time 4 Change' is more deep and meditative and 'Change Is Comin'' picks up the pace with some snappier drums and snares under a gospel-style vocal chorus. Review: An air of mystery surrounds this new While My Sequencer Gently Bleeps project, but what we do know is that they have two superb EPs dropping at the start of 2024. This one, OK, opens with 'Amber' which is a nice undulating and deep cut with lush synth smears. 'Emptiness' hangs synths in the air over more lithe broken beats and 'Felt' is a stripped back rhythm with majestic chords, blurts, bleeps and more all adding colour. 'Hesitation' and 'Burton' round out this sublimely supple and subtle synth record.

Review: Ben White - not the same Ben White that plays as a defender for Arsenal - was just 25 when he was brought by Eddy Bongo Brown of the Funk Brothers to the Motor City to play with Marvin Gaye. It was five years after that when he lay down this single - his only one, although it is said there are some lost tapes featuring a full album on them out there somewhere. We hope it is found as this is excellent - 'I Would Have To Be A Fool' is a super smooth soul with nice funky rhythms and a hint of disco energy. 'Just Give Love A Try' is a more slow and lavish groove with choral backing and fancy piano.

Review: Gospel, FM funk and house collide on the latest offering by The Whole Truth aka. Tom Giles. Following up last year's 'E Da Boss' on Star Creature, 'Believe' is an impassioned plea to the would-be testifier, enjoining them to give over and into their inherent faith, which, if only it weren't for their psychic occlusion of a certain inner harmony, is bound to be fleshed out soon; aside from this sampled command on the vox, the track is effortlessly glitzy and modally shifts between bass harmonies. The inverse club mix is far sparser and dubbier at first, though slowly reveals its inner truth by way of a more stripped-back, mod-wheeled and trigger-padded experimentation.

Review: A Detroit electro-bass classic! 'Boomin'' originally appeared on Will Web's second EP release, 'Extraterrestrial Phunk', on the legendary Detroit label Direct Beat in 1996. It was also featured in Dave Clarke's seminal 1998 'Electro Boogie' mix release. This long-overdue reissue includes the remastered original mix, as well as two previously unreleased versions - the 'Alt Mix' and 'Bonus Beats'. All versions of the track portrary a hollowed-out, leaden vision of the alt-future and command a fantastic use of reverb and space, as if the music were being blasted through a cybernetic bullhorn; everything sounds impressively analog, but the tracks all escape the common electro pratfall of requiring everything to sound front-and-centre.

Review: Discodelic has established itself well with its first ten releases and now the 11th keeps up the momentum with a pair of funky psychedelic jams. First up is the Wilson Boys with their 'Funky Bocas' which pairs busy Afro rhythms with tight interwoven guitar lines and their impassioned vocal cries. It's a full flavour jam with oodles of charm and then on the flip is something just as solid. Alma Fuerte's 'Baila Muchacha' is a brilliantly loose jumble of raw rock guitars, shuffling samba rhythms, flame vocals and synth magic that will electrify the 'floor.

You might better know him as R.O.S.H, a producer with a string of standout club 12"s released around four years ago for the likes of Rekids and Twin Turbo. Now he's honing in on a dramatic, measured approach to techno which emphasises spatial sound design and synthesis, keeping the rhythms poised to carry the towering sonics. Review: Wots My Code has been back on our shelves recently with some of his most seminal EPs getting reissued. His self-titled effort from 1992 came back in October, as did his All Seasons EP also on Kiteforce, both of which sounded as good as they did back when first crafted. Now his The New Dubplates EP drops on Just Another Label with 'Dubplate' kicking off as a remix by Bay B Kane that takes no prisoners. Review: The iconic Is It Balearic heads to the slightly less iconic - in Balearic terms - West Midlands to retrieve this great EP of electric dance effort gems from Wrekin Havoc. 'Camino' is a loose, melody-rich sound with silvery drums and real nostalgia, then 'Moon Dance' it's a more laidback and zoned out sonic daydream for lazy and sunny afternoons by the pool. There is an electro vibe to 'RLTW' which is a reworking of a Christopher Cross Yacht classic then a T Kurt Remix reworks it into a boogie banger. Another varied and vital EP of grown up dance sounds.

Review: Trumpeter, composer and bandleader Nick Walters is back on his own DOT Records with a new record that comes from this newly revived sextet. The group hasn't played together since 2019's LP Active Imagination but hasn't lost any of its magical touch. This new album Marine Moods is inspired by the sea and takes the form of a fantastic contemporary jazz-fusion sound that draws on Afro, modal and spiritual jazz tropes. There are moments of energy such as on 'Gulf Stream' and more dark and hypnotic moments like 'Hydrothermal' as well as raga-curveballs like 'Journey for Joan'. A fine and fresh record indeed.

Review: American jazz fusion outfits don't come much more venerated than Weather Report. Fronted by leader Joe Zawinul, the ensemble evolved subtly throughout their career and it was in 1974 that they dropped this album, Sweetnighter. It proved to be a little more funky and influenced by the emerging t&b of the day than its predecessors and it is also noted for being the last long player the band cut with original bassist Miroslav Vitous, as well as being the band's first album to make it into the Top 100 in the US charts of the day. It sodas as good now as ever on this nice heavyweight vinyl pressing.

Love Juices features nine unreleased tracks from Wilkie And The Wayy, and also includes the recording from Wilkie Hill Jr.'s sole 7" single released in 1983 on the infamous Cold Wave Records, 'It Only Happened Once'. A specially-curated compilation hunted down from various old DAT tapes and reels, this is an unmatched disco-funk heart-stopper, straight from the core of Atlanta, and far ahead of its time at that. Choice cuts include the bass-led opener, 'Laura', a deliciously sensuous ode to its namesake, and 'Caught Up In Stress', a bit-reduced future disco curveball and a miraculous exercise in future-disco soothsaying; its retrofuturistic aesthetic makes it seem as if the track were made now, but no, this is the real future-past deal.

Review: Zamrock, anyone? Often stylised as W.I.T.C.H, WITCH were one of the leading musical lights of post-colonial Zambia, a band that rose to prominence during the early-1970s, a particularly fertile period in the East African nation during which hopes for the future were incredibly bright. Independence leading to the blossoming of homespun ideas, culture, art and creativity. The story takes a tragic turn as the decade reached its final years, the economy collapsing and policymakers turning increasingly authoritarian. Like many in the 'scene', WITCH would fade, almost into obscurity, although the psychedelic rock-hued legacy they left survived, and then experienced a resurgence from 2012, when they reformed amid renewed interest. Kuomboka represents the group at the height of their fame, an album that still sounds packed with optimism, despite insidious changes in the air when it landed in 1976.

Following on from 2021's immense collaborative project with artcore auteurs Converge, the album shall serve as Wolfe's first solo endeavour since the minimal, folk-centric Birth Of Violence released in 2019, while serving as her first output since departing long-time label-home Sargent House (following a diatribe of controversies best saved for another time) in favour of Loma Vista; home to outsider artists of numerous sonic shapes. As this new chapter appears to be marrying elements of industrial fury with complex trip-hop motifs akin to Merzbow producing for Portishead, all the while maintaining her sultry, Wiccan hypnotism; 2024 looks set to be the year of the Wolfe.
