Review: Whereas the first volume of Italian house pioneer Don Carlos's retrospective of Italian house, Echoes of Italy, largely stuck to the picturesque but chunky and organ-rich "Italo-house" template, this second volume expressly focuses on "paradise house" - what Young Marco and Christiaan MacDonald dubbed "dream house" on their superb Welcome To Paradise series. As you'd expect given his association with the sound, Carlos's selections are notably different (and arguably less well known) than theirs, even if some of the same artists feature. It's cultured, tactile and loved-up dancefloor dreaminess all the way, with highlights including the slow-build wonder of Onrico's saucer-eyed 'Echo Gimini', the low-slung groove of Alex Neri's 'The Wizard (Hot Funky Version)', the piano-laden, breakbeat-driven shuffle of Moto Grosso's 'Titanic', and Carlos's own gorgeous, organ-heavy 'Boy'.

Review: Dutch keyboard player Fred van Zegveld's 1969 release is a high-voltage display of Hammond organ wizardry, stretching across jazz, soul and r&b with unshakable confidence. His originals, like 'Family Blues' and 'Blue Organ,' are thick with groove, their choppy rhythms and swelling chords bouncing off Ruud Jacobs' steady basslines and Louis de Bey's crisp, unfussy drumming. The title track channels that same energy into a slow-burning, percussive churn, each phrase pulling tighter before van Zegveld lets loose with another spiralling run. His approach to covers is just as striking. 'Misty' drifts into smoky, late-night territory, drenched in shimmering vibrato, while 'I Wanna Be Your Man' ditches the Beatles' pop polish for something grittier, the organ growling over a rolling rhythm section. There's a looseness to the playing, a sense that the band is locked in but always on the edge of cutting loose. The whole record moves with a natural, in-the-room warmthivan Zegveld doesn't just play the Hammond, he makes it breathe, pulling back for hushed, introspective moments before launching into ecstatic swells.

Review: Synthwave, or "outrun" as it is sometimes popularly known, is one of the defining micro-aesthetics of the 21st Century. Cornered then abrogated by filmmakers like Michael Mann and Nicolas Winding Refn, the style was expanded upon in the music imaginary sometime in the early 2010s (though seeds were sown much earlier). Review: This is the first-ever vinyl reissue of a rather confrontationally-titled but landmark compilation of early California hardcore punk that was originally released by New Underground in 1982. It features iconic bands from the day such as the Descendents, Minutemen, Saccharine Trust and Redd Cross alongside lesser-known acts like Civil Dismay, Ill Will and Zurich 1916. Like all punk, it is raw, unpolished, and visceral which helps convey the passion and gutter feelings expressed on the often harshly delivered vocals. Fully remastered for the occasions this includes a double-sided insert with notes by Susan Swear which helps make it a pivotal piece of punk history.

Review: Few labels in the 80s embodied such a distinct and artful vision as El, the short-lived yet profoundly influential London stable founded by Mike Alway in 1984. The Rubens Room compilation serves as both an introduction and a tribute to the label's uniquely curated aestheticieschewing rock conventions for a sophisticated blend of chamber pop, 60s bubblegum, European chanson, Latin rhythms and cinematic soundscapes. Alway's hands-on approach shaped El's musical direction, working with songwriters like Nicholas Currie (Momus) and Philippe Auclair (Louis Philippe), whose compositions helped show the label's meticulous pop craftsmanship. Simon Turner (The King of Luxembourg), Dean 'Speedball' Brodrick, and producer Richard Preston contributed to a sound that was deliberately theatrical and often satirical, evoking a world of elegance and artifice. This was pop that borrowed from the pastiechoing Ennio Morricone's film scores, Gainsbourg's wit, and the romanticism of forgotten music hallsiyet remained forward-thinking in its stylistic fusions. Among the label's defining artists were the Would-Be-Goods, Anthony Adverse, and Bad Dream Fancy Dress, whose narratives often explored themes through a distinctly un-macho, female gaze. Unlike much of the indie scene of the era, El's output was a celebration of refinement, wit and melodrama. The influence of this approach extended far beyond the UK, particularly in Japan, where it directly inspired the rise of Shibuya-kei artists like Pizzicato Five, Kahimi Karie, and Cornelius. While El never achieved mass commercial success, The Rubens Room reaffirms its legacy as one of Britain's most inventive labels, where pop was not just music but a world of sound, style and storytelling.
