Bas Dobbelaer & Vand - "Tsuneo" (6:14)
Estrato Aurora & Siarem - "Fuego" (6:10)
Human Space Machine - "Persist" (6:39)
OK EG - "Dual Path" (7:15)
Review: Deeper shades of a finely sifted pedigree. Irish label Appian Sounds, helmed up by Al Blayney, champion only winnowed techno sounds, not threshed. A welcome international team huddle in, with these six artists from locales as far-flung as Amsterdam and Valencia contributing the likes of 'Tsuneo' and 'Persist'. The tunes verge melodic as they move through and beyond jankiness, distending die-cut acids and subtly synthetic humanisations, especially in the percussion department. 'Fuego' is the zen roshi's choice, its gaffered, glass-smithed pads topping off a naturalistic percussive surging forward, one best experienced with your eyes closed.

DJ Nephil - "Dinner For Two" (4:27)
Exhausted Modern - "Fear Of Focus" (3:31)
Fragedis - "Landing In Reality" (5:54)
Happy707 - "Where Does That Noise Come From" (4:28)
Review: Menacing EBM and dark synth billows from a Netherlands hinterland; our heralds speak of an esoteric encampment by the name of Espectro Oculto, said to be the remote incantators of an unstoppable curse in sound. Six shadowy emissaries have been sent to spread the pestilence; Trenton Chase, Martial Canterel, DJ Nephil, Exhausted Modern, Fragedis and Happy707. Clearly, the faction have recruited only the best, trusted and yet most nefarious of spies from as far-flung regions as Czechia and Argentina in the administering of such a sordid sonic plague. We're left most quivery at the centrifugal doom drones of Exhausted Modern's 'Fear Of Focus', across whose breakdown banshees are heard wailing and snarling, and Fragedis' 'Landing In Reality', a lo-fi techno freakout and sonochemical anomaly, channeling militant two-way radio samples and hellish FM synthesis.

Conjunto Media Luna/Mumbia Y Sus Candelosos - "Bogotokio" (feat Hydro As BNJ) (3:20)
Mumbia Y Sus Candelosos/Conjunto Media Luna - "Cumbia Teriyaki" (3:30)
Review: Conjunto Medialuna's latest album on Little Beat More is a direct trip to the heart of Bogota's rich cumbia scene. The record blends traditional rhythms with psychedelic influences driven by the Colombian accordion and ecstatic percussion that is so strongly associated with this style. These are two of the jams from it, but frankly you should also check out the full LP. It's a tribute to the guacharaca and the lively street parrandas where each song explores new interpretations of classic sounds. Featuring collaborations with N. Hardem, Mismo Perro, Son Rompe Pera, MC Hydro and Japanese-Latin percussionist Muupy, Noches de Medialuna, it transcends cultural boundaries and joins the dots between traditional and modern urban Latin music which is now so hugely popular around the world.

Review: Ensemble Modern and experimental, Berlin-based music composer and sound artist Hainbach come together for Primer, an album sourced from their 2022 Checkpoint concert and reworked in the studio with bassist Paul Cannon. The record transforms their fine live performance into a rich, immersive home listening experience with Hainbach's signature use of nuclear research gear, tape loops and vintage electronics weaving haunting, ever-shifting textures throughout. As such the pieces pulse with a sonic spark that captures the spirit of experimentation and collaboration and is taps into plenty of avant-garde thinking in its approach to drone and ambient.

]Nathan Haines, the renowned New Zealand musician, unveils his 11th studio album, marking his first solo venture since 2014. Known for his talents of saxophone, flute, and composition across jazz, electronic and dance genres, Haines melds his signature jazz sound with vibrant electronic and disco influences on Notes. This labor of love began years ago in collaboration with the late UK producer Phil Asher, whose influence permeates the album despite his passing during its creation. Featuring guest vocalists like UK soul-diva Vanessa Freeman and emerging talents Ajuna Oakes, Ruby Cesan, La Coco, and EO, Notes showcases a diverse range of voices intertwined with Haines's own instrumental strength. With contributions from bassist Jkriv and electronic jazz innovator Mark de Clive-Lowe, alongside beats by Marc Mac and acoustic bass by his father Kevin, the album is full of spirit and musical evolution. Frank Booker's production on three tracks adds depth, while the acoustic rendition of Rare Silk's 'Storm,' featuring vocalist Rachel Clarke, stands out as a poignant artistic highlight.

Review: Russell Haswell brings Deep Time, marking his sixth release on Diagonal following a productive 2024, which included the 4x12" compilation 13, on top of a UK-wide tour. Deep Time spans a vast influential range, reflecting Haswell's diverse background in computer music, black metal, noise, techno, and improvisation. Deep Time explores all from geopolitical tension to the incomprehensible scale of time itself, drawing sublime inspiration from his solo trips to the Scottish Hebrides and the rock formations glimpsable there. Album highlight 'Unconformity' references James Hutton's geological discovery and its connection to the Earth's history, with typography for the album sleeve designed by MuirMcNeil.

Review: Decca Records, a champion of British jazz and particularly the homegrown talent of the 50s, 60s and 70s, continues its exploration of those eras. Curated by Mark Baxter, this is the perfect entry point for those unfamiliar with the virtuoso saxophonist, flautist, vibraphonist and composer Hayes, gathering ten tracks originally recorded for the Fontana label between 1961 and 1969 and answering to the question "Where do I start with Tubby Hayes?" Hayes was a significant figure in British jazz, a multi-instrumentalist and composer whose work spanned various styles, from hard bop to modal jazz. This collection showcases the breadth of his talent, highlighting key moments from his prolific period with Fontana. It's a chance to hear Hayes at his peak, demonstrating his technical prowess and his distinctive musical voice. Here, seasoned jazz aficionados are offered a curated selection of familiar favorites, perhaps revealing new nuances with fresh ears. But its primary purpose is to introduce new listeners to Hayes's brilliance and by focusing on a specific era and label, the compilation offers a coherent taste of Hayes's evolution throughout the 60s

Review: By the time Heart reentered the studio to record their self-titled eighth album for Capitol, their commercial momentum seemed to be fading. Early successes, such as Dreamboat Annie and its three follow-ups, had all climbed to the Billboard Top 20, but 1982's Private Audition and 1983's Passionworks struggled to crest so highly, the latter especially failing to go gold, marking the end of their contract with Epic. Tough bargains all round! Yet, signs of resurgence emerged: the band drew fresh traction from the Passionworks single 'Almost Paradise' after it was featured in the film Footloose, motivating the follow-up record Heart. Hard hair rock and arena-bound glam metal are distilled down to an essential T here, kicking off with the medusan 'If Looks Could Kill' before moving into the Lynn Wilson lead-up ballad 'What About Love'.

Review: Following on from 2023's acclaimed debut full-length All Gas No Brakes, Bristolian noise-punks Heavy Lungs return with the definition of an antithetical sophomore LP with Caviar. Clocking in at under 30 minutes (significantly less than their initial outing) and recorded live in dingy church rehearsal spaces to capture the unhinged intensity of their live performances, this is the sound of a band vehemently disinterested with mainstream appeal, exposure or playing the game by any terms apart from their own. While vocalist Danny Nedelko would be the named subject of one of the biggest singles from fellow Bristol natives Idles' 2018 breakout second album Joy As An Act Of Resistance, where his peers have expanded their sound and embraced myriads of melody, Heavy Lungs are poignantly going the opposite route, full speed towards oblivion with only chaos and anarchy on their collective minds.

Review: The difficult second. Apparently not for composer and producer David Jospeh. Once again delving into the latter work of Mark Hollis with and without Talk Talk for jumping off points and inspiration, this time the lead artist drafts the muse's son, Charlie Hollis, to play piano on no less than four tracks, alongside band veterans Robbie Macintosh, Laurence Pendrous, Andy Panayi, Martin Ditcham and Simon Edwards. Listing all the other musicians who have contributed here would be a long task, so let's cut to the chase. This is lush stuff, which incorporates but never obsesses over elements of jazz, post rock, ambient and soundscape. It's vast and also notably intimate, like finding the perfect spot of seclusion and shade under a beautiful tree while gazing out over endless horizons.

Review: The fourth and perhaps best known album by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass marked a shift from their earlier, Mexican-inspired sound to pop-friendly Latin jazz-lounge instrumental covers. Its upbeat sound appealed to a wide audience, from young adults embracing 1960s pop culture to older listeners drawn to easy listening. Heavy radio play and mainstream exposure helped it define the Ameriachi style; hits 'A Taste Of Honey' and the sultry 'Love Potion No. 9' inaugurated it as an erotic touchstone, also partly thanks to its provocative album cover. Its chart performance was so enduring that its total stats would only end up matched by The Beatles, Prince, and Taylor Swift much later down the line.

Review: World-renowned pianist Hiromi is a hugely prolific artist and Out There is her 13th studio album. Despite her output, she continues to show innovation while fusing jazz styles into her own sound. Here she is joined by her band Sonicwonder, featuring Adam O'Farrill on trumpet, Hadrien Feraud on bass and Gene Coye on drums. Together they deliver an electric and dynamic performance that pushes the boundaries of jazz while coming steeped in exceptional musicality and innovative approaches. Having performed at prestigious jazz festivals worldwide and received accolades from major outlets like the New York Times and NPR, Hiromi shows she is far from done yet with this double album.

Review: Some 37 haiku poems are given an avant-garde, 64-minute musical backing with translations from poet Harry Gilonis, on this unique project by composer and multi-instrumentalist Tim Hodgkinson (Henry Cow) and vocalist Atsuko Kamura. We hear a vignetting lingual interplay, with lines in English by Hodgkinson sung in Japanese by Kamura, as a wide instrumental span covers percussions, violin, viola, harp, clarinets, guitars and electronics result. Recorded between Tokyo and London, the album offers a startlingly satisfying sonic renga (a Japanese poetic form encompassing a succession of haikus), lending the brevity of classic haiku an expansive, stretched-out prosthesis. From the 17th through to the 20th-century, this is a subduing but still irregular experience, as it formally demonstrates the laconic and aphoristic essence of the haiku.

Review: Bangles lead singer Susanna Hoffs' The Lost Record finally resurfaces, capturing a heartfelt era of creativity from the mid-90s. Recorded in her home garage with collaborators like Dan Schwartz and David Baerwald, the 10-track album combines Beatles-esque melodies with introspective themes of family, love and resilience. Standouts include 'Under a Cloud', which opens with a Revolver-style sound, and 'Grateful', inspired by motherhood's deep connections. 'I Will Take Care of You' radiates parental love, while 'Who Will She Be?' delves into complex father-daughter dynamics. 'Living Alone Without You' and 'November Sun' explore the delicate balance of relationships and self-reflection. Joined by Go-Go's members Charlotte Caffey and Jane Wiedlin, Hoffs revisits the '60s motif with 'Life on the Inside', while her cover of Shawn Colvin's 'I Don't Know Why' closes the album on a poignant note. Though some tracks later appeared in other projects, The Lost Record stands as an intimate snapshot, blending Hoffs' artistic evolution with timeless, emotive storytelling.
