Review: The Swiss saxophonist delivers a mesmerising journey through modal jazz on his latest album. Drawing deep inspiration from John Coltrane, Torrent blends intricate harmonies with raw, unfiltered improvisation, crafting a collection that is both a tribute and an exploration of new sonic terrain. The album opens with 'Danse Tropical, a reflective and richly textured piece where Torrent's saxophone weaves through intricate scales, searching yet controlled. The steady rhythm section acts as an anchor, allowing the melodies to expand and evolve organically. In contrast, 'Quannassa' injects a restless intensity, shifting through complex harmonic movements while the quartet navigates its dynamic ebb and flow with effortless cohesion. The title track, 'Buleria', is perhaps the album's centerpieceian eight-minute odyssey that fuses modal jazz with flamenco's hypnotic rhythms. Torrent's improvisation feels deeply intuitive, soaring over a meditative backdrop that evokes the vast, open landscapes of Iberia. The interplay between the quartetipiano, bass and drumsiis both fluid and instinctive, fostering an environment where the saxophone can push beyond conventional boundaries. While deeply rooted in Coltrane's legacy, Buleria is far from a mere homage. Torrent and his ensemble use the foundations of modal jazz as a springboard for personal expression, creating a sound that is both reverent and adventurous. Each track unfolds like a conversationisometimes gentle, sometimes incendiary, but always searching for something beyond the ordinary.

Featuring bowed strings, shimmering flute and rich reed instruments, the duo's compositions draw from indie-pop structures and 1980s cafe music to concoct stripped-back yet lush sounds that recall Arthur Russell and Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Torso subverts musical hierarchies with addictive, breathtaking results here and though this is refined, accomplished and innovative material, it is also free from pretension.

Review: Vittoria Totale is a genuinely unique creative: a self-styled 'independent curator, language researcher and writer' who divides her time between stints in London, Berlin and Rome. Solo Voice, her debut album, is a similarly unusual proposition - a collection of written and improvised 'sound poetry' that alternates between impactfully recited poems, layered vocal experiments (see 'Sometimes', where Totale cuts and pastes phrases, the effects-laden poetic collage that is 'The Messenger Messes With The Masses', the vocalisations and spoken phrases of 'Text Me Next', and the Steve Reich-esque 'Bitte'). With Totale variously musing on sexuality, fantasy, life in the city and much more, it's an intriguing and ultimately fascinating listen.

Review: This album has been described as 15 self-portraits by Sebi Tramontana. They vary hugely in length from 30 seconds to around nine minutes and all heavily feature the trombone. It is taken in myriad different directions with plenty of improvisational techniques and some subtle nods to Duke Ellington's trombone masters. It makes for an involving journey of light and dark that makes direct reference to the brass bible 'Song and Wind' by Arnold Jacobs, who is chief tuba player with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Review: Politically charged Motor City jazz collective Tribe has undergone something of a career rebirth in the last few years. The releases they played, produced and put out on their Tribe Records imprint in the '70s are rightly revered, but the truth is that they've made equally as good music since getting back into the studio in 1990 - as this brilliant retrospective from Strut proves. The ten-track set contains both released material and previously unheard recordings, with highlights including a fantastic new version of "Juba" featuring Harold McKinney and his "McKinfolk" musicians, a daring new version of Tribe member Phil Ranelin's "He The One We All Knew" and the spiritual rallying cry that is "Marcus Garvey".

Review: Soul Jazz Records is back with another crucial reissue, this time of Dedication by Tribe, a rare gem from the 1970s funk, soul and jazz era as a special limited-edition coloured vinyl for Black Friday 2024. It has been fully remastered and comes with original artwork and mirrors the eclectic sounds of Mandrill, The Blackbyrds and Kool and the Gang. Tribe, led by multi-instrumentalist Earl J Foster and producer Big Dee Ervin, blended funk, jazz, rock, Latin and soul into a singular style on the album which was originally released independently in 1977 and has been out of print for over 45 years. Dedication is a masterpiece that offers a deep, spaced-out fusion.

Review: Dwight Trible is a skilled jazz vocalist and activist as well as being classed as the godfather of the LA jazz scene. He has recently impressed on Gondwana and now he is back with a new album via London jazz aficionados and analog specialists Gearbox Records that builds on the critical acclaim of his last outing, Mothership in 2019. Here Trible again links up with the modern great Kamasi Washington on saxophone while LA multi-instrumentalist Georgia Anne Muldrow provides the vocals. Sitting soul, spoken word, cosmic electronic idiosyncrasies, rich melodies and avant-garde guitars all make this another classic.

Review: Espen Berg's Maetrix captures the pianist and composer at a bold creative high, as he upscales his craft, this time working with the celebrated Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. Originally premiered to a full ovation at the 2017 Molde International Jazz Festival, this six-part suite finally sees release, recorded between Oslo's Rainbow Studio and Ora Studio in Trondheim. Berg furthers his rep for rhythmic complexity and emotive depth to a 14-piece ensemble featuring standout artists Daniel Herskedal, Rob Waring, and Hayden Powell, while vocalists Kirsti Huke and Sissel Vera Pettersen ensure a graceful vocal topline. Echoes of Pat Metheny and Kenneth Dahl Knudsen waft through the compositions, but Maetrix stands firmly in Berg's own voice, radiating the sense of a collaborative effort years in the making.
