Review: While trying to keep himself busy during lockdown, musician Laurence Mason decided to record a Dave Brubeck style cover version of the Stranglers' classic "Golden Brown" full of excitable drum solos, and snaking horn lines replacing the oh-so familiar lead vocal. It became a big hit online after he posted it on YouTube, so Jazz Room Records boss Paul Murphy asked if he could release it on wax. It's a superb version that successfully reinvents the Stranglers' gem as a quality jazz tune. Equally as impressive is his flipside version of the Police's "Walking on the Moon", which is as deep, atmospheric, enticing and intoxicating as they come. In fact, it could well be better than the in-demand A-side, and that's saying something.

Review: The Take Vibe EP is musician Laurence Mason. Back in the height of the pandemic, he decided to collide the music of two of his heroes in Dave Brubeck and Dave Greenfield of The Stranglers. His YouTube degot over one million hits, so the natural next step was to press the results to vinyl. The first edition sold out fast - and now we have a second one on a nice red 7". 'Golden Brown' and 'Walking On The Moon' are two superb jazz cuts with hints of funk and soul and singable melodies that will stay lodged deep in your brain for ages.

On the flip is a romantic, late night jazz version of The Police classic 'Walking On The Moon', making this a real collector's item.

Review: In their latest deep dive into the thriving Finnish jazz scene, We Jazz Records showcases two tracks from Tampio, a sextet whose trademark sound mixes Latin jazz with elements of cumbia and mambo. Title track 'Keumgang' is a fiery and fearsome affair in which foreboding, spy-funk style horn blasts spar with jaunty accordion motifs, tipsy trumpet solos and psyche-funk organ lines atop a cumbia style rhythm track performed by a trio of percussionists. Over on the flip 'Tampomambo' is an even more up-tempo and groovy affair featuring a heavier, fuzzy mambo groove, wilder accordion sounds and a seriously weighty bassline. It, too, has a slightly psychedelic feel so should land with DJs who like the more hallucinatory end of Latin music.

Review: Dynamite Cuts lives up to its name with this limited 7" from acclaimed Brazilian jazz singer Tania Maria. Two driving and dancey tracks pressed nice and loud for the first time on 45, "Fio Maravilha" is a busy arrangement made up of wild piano, big raw drums and Maria's impassioned, lung-emptying singing that whizzes along at pace. "Bedeu" has a little more Latin flavour, bossa nova swagger and space in the mix for the soul to shine through. Drop either one and take shelter, cause both of these cuts are bombs.

Review: Brazilian jazz vocalist Tania Maria is a true icon with a huge back catalogue of music behind her, but of course it sometimes helps if a diligent digger weaves a path through the reams of albums and pulls out a couple of the best. That's just what Soul Brother have done with this 7", looking back to Maria's 1983 album Come With Me and lifting a pair of pearlers for a fresh walk in the sun. 'Come With Me' is a sundown slinker, with Maria's airy tone gliding over the sprightly piano chords while on the flip 'Lost In Amazonia' is a joyous, scat-powered slice of jazz funk with incredible slap bass flex.

Review: Tuck in your napkin and get seated comfortably for six plates of delicious broken beat and nu jazz funk from Tapes on the small but already well-formed Mida label. These superbly cosmic studies in sound are packed with finely tuned frequencies, cymbals and drums, silky spacecraft arps, video game sounds and playful keys that scatter through arrangements to trippy effect. All of that is underpinned by the sort of hefty low end that locks you in and the whole thing is an ever-shifting sound world that sounds both ancient yet futuristic. Sublime.

Review: Two beautiful compositions from the eponymous debut album'70s New York fusionists Tarika Blue's, never previously released on 45. Props to Athens From The North must be given once again!! "Truth Is The Key" is an ageless swinging jazz piece that still sounds futureproofed to this day... Largely thanks to the pristine musicianship, Irene Datcher's vocals and the liquid soul arp solo. Few tracks live up their name as much as "Dreamflower". Spacey, somnambulant and laced in swooning dynamics, it's not hard to understand why the likes of Erykah Badu sampled this one.

Review: The 'Diplomats Of Soul' are DJs Mike Allin and Ralph Tee, who made a name for themselves by spinning only the most waxen soul bits across all of Asia's highest-end luxury bars and hotels. A diggers' delight, their eponymous label most recently lays claim to Grady Tate's 'Lady Love', a naturalistic, cinematic slice of soul about nothing less than the birds and the bees. It's pitted against the low-swinging 'Moondance', a feverish blues bourbon showing off both Tate's classic singing and drumming. The Diplomats have certainly quelled international tensions between soul pushers on this one.

Review: American jazz drummer and singer Grady Tate was a busy man back in the day - he released some 38 odd albums from the mid-60s onwards and many big tunes. 'Be Black Baby' is a proud celebration of his race at a time when it was no doubt hugely risky to do so - right in the midst of the civil rights movement's peak days. It's a funked-up number with a potent message delivered with belief and empowerment. This unique 7" repress pairs a stereo version with a mono recording.

Review: TC.KYLIE x The Hourglass deliver a dynamic jazz fusion outing here that mixes up Hong Kong, Japanese, and British cultures in a top debut album. Jazz fusion pianist Kylie leads her band with great energy while playing keyboard and synth keytar that is a little reminiscent of Japanese jazz rock. Based in Hong Kong and London, she's inspired by Shaun Martin, Robert Glasper and Japanese acid jazz groups like Fox Capture Plan and Jabberloop and that shows in these sounds. They are bright, happy and uplifting with the majestic flute leads of 'Merry-go-round Of Life ' impossible not to fill you with excitement and joy.

Review: Over the last few years, Jimi Tenor seems to have settled into a new role as an elder statesman of left-of-centre Finnish jazz. He's also taken to composing music for film, as with the four cuts on this extended-play seven-inch. They're all featured on Kati Juruus's recent movie Cinema Dadaab, which focuses on the escapism films provide for the inhabitants of a refugee camp. Echoes of the setting and storyline can be heard across Tenor's compositions, which variously mix and match elements of jazz-funk, Blaxploitation-era soundtracks, the polyrhythms of Africa, the intoxicating instrumentation of the Middle East and the Finnish musician's own eccentric musical vision.

Review: Backatcha Records continues to offer up excellent EPs full of rare and overlooked music. Their latest release delves into the vaults of Washington D.C band Theatre West, who recorded an album's worth of music for Black Fire Records in 1976 that eventually appeared on a limited CD in 1993. This, then, is the band's first ever vinyl release. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the gentle soul warmth of "Children Of Tomorrow's Dreams" and the feisty disco-soul goodness of "No More Junk" to the child-friendly sing-along that is Rhodes-laden disco-funk outing "Searching For Ourselves".
