Review: Polish electronic jazz duo Skalpel aka Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudlo hail from Wroclaw and have a diverse range of tastes and inspirations. They put all that into their own signature blend of local, traditional jazz inspirations and new electronica, with everything from Miles Davis to David Axelrod to Ninja Tune being referenced. This new album is a sublime 16-track offering that goes from the deep and roomy 'Why Not Jungle' to the soul-stirring melodic flutters and dubby rhythms of 'Momentum' via the spiritualism of 'White Label'. It's a brilliantly realized work of modern jazz greatness.

Review: Should you be that travel agent searching for the original sound of 60s-70s in your funk, soul, psychedelic rock and folk today, then Will Dorey, aka Skinshape, is your partner in time. Tracks on the album sometimes comes across as easy to compare with a stream of other admired acts like Air ("After Midnight") to Beck and Australia's Tame Impala on "Metanoia" and "Life As One". Throughout the LP, furthermore, Skinshape's fourth, it's hard to not escape hints of French inspirations in its sometimes jazzy inspirations, with flickers of the 1973 soundtrack to the film La Planete sauvage (Fantastic Planet) never too far off. A highly recommended listen!

Review: Skrillex (Sonny Moore) is back with a bang - or rather, two. Don't Get Too Close is his second album in as many days, immediately following the desirous Quest For Fire (it was dropped the following day, making up a duet of LPs). A similar cast of characters accompanies the acclaimed producer on his quest for creative innovation as 'Quest For Fire' - but this one is more introspective and eclectic, blending emo rap, urban pop, and memecore with Moore's signature bass-heavy production. A willingness to keep up with the times is clear, despite Skrillex's emergence in an older 2010s era: production collabs with Gud, Corbin, Lido, PinkPantheress, Virtual Riot and Danny L Harle accompany cameo features from drained starlets like Yung Lean and Bladee and regular Skrillex-adjacent favourites like Justin Bieber, Chief Keef and Swae Lee.

Review: Skyzoo's debut album, The Salvation, released back in September 2009 marked a major moment in his career and was packed with production from top hip-hop talents like Just Blaze, 9th Wonder, Nottz, Illmind, Black Milk, and Needlz. Known for his heartfelt, true-to-life lyrics, Skyzoo quickly earned respect as one of his generation's standout emcees with collaborations across the hip-hop spectrum, from Rakim to Black Thought. He has released numerous albums, including projects with Pete Rock and Apollo Brown, and to celebrate this one's 15th anniversary, Duck Down Records serves it up on navy blue and white marbled vinyl.

Review: Catherine Grace Garner hails from Missouri but is base din LA. It is there that she has made her name as a pop singer and songwriter who first started uploading tunes under the Slater name. Now working under the more stylised alias of Slayyyter, she is back with a sophomore album. It comes two years after her head turning and self titled debut and is another rule breaking mash up of pop, trap, experimental and electronic sounds. Tin pot percussion clatters about over big beats, euro-dance grooves are finished with her own emotive vocals and stadium-sized pop anthems bring lung-busting vocal performances. It's a wild ride, for sure.

Review: Sleaford Mods have long dealt in biting, angry and frustrated social commentary. Right now, they're not short on inspirations, and it's this that makes 'UK Grim' such a terrific album. Throughout, mic man Jason Williamson takes aims at the ills of the UK and the increasingly dark, nasty rhetoric of the Conservative government that he so clearly detests. Combine these inspired vocal diatribes (shout-along hooks included) with backing tracks that don't shy away from making things heavy, paranoid and intense - think warped, weighty basslines, lo-fi drum machine rhythms and fuzzy, scuzzy, post-punk guitars - and you have one of the Nottingham duo's most hard-hitting and breathlessly brilliant albums to date... and that's saying something.

Review: If you don't know what Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods are all about by now then where have you been? They lay down raw, ragged MIDI beats that are deceptively simply but impossibly catch, with pressing social commentary and Tory baiting lyrics over the top. This new album UK Grim - a play on UK Grime, no doubt - is even more dance floor focussed than any before it. The gritty reality of modern life and all its pitfalls are in sharp focus throughout making it another gem from this much loved duo that also somewhat redefines their sound in new ways.

Review: Festival favourites and working-class heroes Sleaford Mods hail from the East Midlands and have become the voice of the oppressed and the pissed off. Their gritty, lo-fi, raw and stripped-back music is powered by punky electronic beats and overlaid with bars spat out with real anger and ire. They have churned out plenty of it by now, subtle tweaking the template each time but never losing the visceral appeal. This new album UK Grim - a play on UK Grime? - is more dancefloor focussed than before it with the angst and pitfalls of modern life all addressed. It's another winner, no doubt.

Review: Sleaford Mods' second album, Divide and Exit, originally self-released, now sees a remastered reissue through Rough Trade Records, commemorating its tenth anniversary. This album marks a pivotal moment for the duo, encapsulating the societal decay and class consciousness of contemporary Britain with a fiercer focus than before via tracks like celebrated 'Tiswas' and 'Tweet Tweet Tweet'. The album's urgent, compact sound reflects a raw punk energy, serving as a powerful vehicle for their outrage and socio-political commentary. Reflecting on the album's impact, Williamson notes its punk ethos and pioneering spirit, with each song seamlessly flowing into the next, creating a cohesive sonic journey. Indeed, Divide and Exit stands as a beacon of originality, carving out new territory in the musical landscape.

Review: Slum Village's brilliant Fantastic Volume II: Instrumentals is a direct trip into the heart of Detroit's underground hip-hop scene. Originally released in 2000, this instrumental version of their acclaimed album strips away the vocals, allowing the soulful beats to shine in their purest form. Produced by the legendary J Dilla alongside contributions from Baatin and T3, the album's production is a masterclass in sample-based hip-hop, blending jazz, soul and funk influences with innovative drum programming. Each track is a sonic tapestry, filled with lush melodies, gritty textures, and hypnotic rhythms that showcase Slum Village's pioneering sound and Dilla's unparalleled production prowess.

Review: The legendary Slum Village's latest album was another great return and now it lands on wax after nearly a decade. The 12-track project is packed with great collaborations with Larry June, Cordae, Robert Glasper, Eric Roberson, Phat Kat, Karriem Riggins, and more. Following their 2015 hit Yes!, T3 and Young RJ continued to evolve the group's legacy while staying rooted in their Detroit sound. With F.U.N., they explore disco-inspired grooves and blend nostalgia with innovation. As T3 explained at the time, the album was about breaking boundaries and "just having fun." Slum Village proved they're still relevant here as they head into new but familiar still familiar.

Review: NOIR was Smino's second album and a great progression from the first. It originally came in 2018 under Interscope/Downtown Records and it built on debut BLKSWN with some stylish forays into the worlds of neo-soul, funk, hip hop, and r&b. Across a diverse range of sounds, NOIR features standout singles like 'Z4L,' 'KLINK,' 'LMF,' and "FENTY SEX' and includes guest appearances from the likes of Ravyn Lenae, Dreezy, and Valee. Not only is 'Tequila Mockingbird' our favourite track title on the album but it's also a lovely track that blends classic dub with yearning r&b vocals and jazzy musicality.

Review: Seven years since the last Smith & Mudd album kissed our ears... Gorthlek is a long-awaited treat that's landed (by no coincidence we suspect) right at the start of prime sandy season. Picking up where they left us (together and as part of the Bison collective), it's every bit as soul soothing, soft-focus and poised as you'd expect. It's the weight and richness that will grab most fans the hardest; amid the floral pastoral instrumentation on tracks such as "Alrick" and "Gorthlek Part 1", there's real swampy bluesy fusion such as "Mr Coats", there's fiddle-flipping cosmic folk on "Enos" and naked piano striking drama on the closure "Gorthlek Part 2". Instrumental Balearic bliss.

Review: The second full-length solo record by British songstress Jorja Smith. Falling Or Flying was released in 2023, and heard a continued unpacking of the yearning, jazz-soul-r&b-house combo she'd laid down on prior releases like Be Right Back and Lost & Found. Smith herself stated that the lyrical content "touch[es] on breakups, relationships with my friends, relationships with old friends, relationships with myself," and marking a recent step into womanhood, "more sure of herself than ever before". This reimagined edition of the album, released a year later, hears several more live interpretations of the OG record's best songs, including 'Greatest Gift', 'Little Things' and 'Feelings'.

Review: While recent breakout hit 'Stargazing' remains an undeniable earworm, this EP doesn't let it overshadow the rest of the tracks. From the infectious opening of 'Nice to Meet You' to the heartfelt closer 'Little By Little', Smith creates a collection full of memorable moments. His ability to blend folk-pop with emotionally charged lyrics shines through, especially on tracks like 'Wait For You' and 'Whisper', where the vulnerability in his voice adds depth to the storytelling. The brilliant collaboration with James Bay on 'Waste' brings an added layer of depth to the EP, with their voices complementing each other beautifully. Meanwhile, '3am' tells the feeling of loss with its haunting violin and introspective. A Minute... is a strong indication of Myles Smith's potential - a collection of songs that are both accessible and sincere. Fans of heartfelt pop-folk will find much to enjoy here and it's clear Smith is on the rise.

Review: SML is the quintet of bassist Anna Butterss, synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, percussionist Booker Stardrum, and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann. Together they present their debut album Small Medium Large, a collection of long-form improvisations recorded during two separate two-night stands at the beloved Los Angeles venue ETA. Forming the perfect locale in which to boost their initial rise, ETA is perhaps no longer a fitting name - with SML, we're no longer pondering this band's estimated time of arrival. Small Medium Large is a sublime assemblage of circulatory grooves and textural anomalies, at different moments recalling the synth-laced improvisations of Herbie Hancock's Sextant, the jagged dance punk of Essential Logic, the rhythmic revelry of Fela Kuti, the low-end elasticity of Parliament/Funkadelic, or the glitchy dub techno of Pole.

Originally released in 2019, this offering is a testament to their lyrical prowess and undeniable chemistry, their verses weaving tales of street life and hustler anthems over the raw and soulful production of legendary beatmaker Pete Rock. Tracks like 'By Any Means' and 'Bullets' showcase their sharp wordplay and hard-hitting delivery, while collaborations with Westside Gunn, Conway The Machine, and Styles P add further depth and intensity to the mix. This reissue, celebrating the album's fifth anniversary, not only brings this classic back to vinyl but also includes the previously unavailable Pete Rock instrumentals, offering a deeper dive into the sonic landscape of this collaborative masterpiece.

Together they have cooked up a mind-altering sonic trip featuring spaced-out pads and crunchy beats. The bars are hard and speak of the Black experience and the synths are often otherworldly and celestial as they soften the edges of the lyrics. Another great project from both.

Smoove's deft emulatory production skills are once again put on full display, collecting vocal samples and original backing tracks from genres like funk, jazz, soul and hip-hop to produce something to the tune of 15 or so remixes. Bustling interpretations of Kraak & Smaak, Una Mas Trio, and Brenda Boykin render this a headsy yet unpretentious dance dazzler.

Review: Smoove props up his rep as a highly consistent big beat, funk and disco crossover producer with a freight-class shipment of 'Heavy Goods'. Somersaulting out from his Geordie soul group Smoove & Turrell - on top of his sought-after multi-track vinyl re-edits, as well as his remixing prowess across hip-hop, soul, and funk - this Jalapeno Records follow-up continues Smoove's recent favourite postal theme. Indeed, the postal system is what keeps us afloat (and cue the boundless irony of Royal Mail's latest sale to a Czech billionaire, the name of whose LLC is, apropos of online music retail, "EP Group"). Betty Black & The Family Fortune, Emma Noble, Kraak & Smaak, Izo FitzRoy, The High & Mighty, and Bahama Soul Club, all are all loaned Smoove's Pygmalion hand, honing a musing work of art from many a die-cut classic. Whirlwind D's 'Labels', Izo Fitzroy's 'Blind Faith' and TGH Collective's 'Higher Collective' are special versions too. Assuming you didn't already know the songs in question, you really wouldn't be able to tell the edit jobs from the originals. Mint condition!

Review: Snarky Puppy are much celebrated five-time Grammy Award winners whose ever-popular album Sylva no gets a special reissue. This re-release comes on nice heavyweight double vinyl and as well as including the six original cuts, it also takes in two alternate takes of 'The Curtain' and 'The Clearing.' Although it was originally released by Impulse! Records, this new version comes via GroundUP Music who have cut it from the original masters. It makes for a superb revisiting of a classic jazz album with the added bonus of a couple of different perspectives.

Review: Oakland's SNDTRAK dropped his long awaited debut album back in 2021. It was a big hit right off the bat and now it gets a welcome reissue. These are snappy beats with rolling drums, deep hip hop instrumentals that bring the best of the dusty school to fresh new school thinking. Delicate melodies are buried within, soulful vocal smears drift in and out of ear shot and well played bass slowly rotate sunder the tunes to bring languid funk. Sunny and heart aching, heat damaged and stoned, this is a warming soundtrack on many different levels.

Review: The arrival of any album by the mighty Snoop is a major moment in hip-hop history but this feel even bigger than usual. With the more than capable hands of Dr Dre on the production tiller alongside Snoop, there's a real royal roll call of talent lining up to guest, from Eminem, 50 Cent, Method Man, Jelly Roll, BJ the Chicago Kid, Jhene Aiko, Alus, K.A.A.N., Smitty, Dem Jointz, Cocoa Sarai, Stalone, and Fat Money. Rather inexplicably, Tom Petty and Sting feature, making this an unusual and memorable moment even within the illustrious confines of his career to date.

Review: Snoop Dogg's Missionary delivers a captivating blend of nostalgia and innovation, weaving his signature West Coast vibe into contemporary narratives. The album, produced masterfully by Dr. Dre, resonates with intricate beats and smooth grooves that harken back to the essence of Doggystyle while exploring fresh themes. Standout track 'Gorgeous,' featuring the soothing vocals of Jhene Aiko, illustrates Snoop's lyrical maturity and emotional depth. Available in an exclusive indie vinyl edition, this release comes with a collectible poster, making it a notable addition for both longtime fans and new listeners alike. Prepare for a sonic experience that reaffirms Snoop's iconic status with everyone from Tom Petty to 50 Cent and Eminem and many more guesting.

Review: Snoop Dogg's No Limit Top Dogg marked a significant return to form after his previous two projects, which some felt leaned more towards the No Limit sound than his own. While it may not quite reach the career pinnacle of Doggystyle, it showcases Snoop Dogg finding his groove again, sounding more authentic and engaged than in recent efforts. The album's production, featuring beats from Dr Dre, DJ Quik and others, harks back to the golden era of Death Row Records, adding to the nostalgia with appearances from his old Death Row associates. The album's success, reaching the top of the US Top r&b/hip-hop albums chart and peaking at number two on the Billboard 200, speaks to its popularity and Snoop Dogg's enduring appeal. Singles like 'Buck'em', 'Down 4 My N's', and 'Bitch Please' were standouts from this period of his career.

Review: Snoop Dogg's highly anticipated Missionary reunites the iconic duo of Snoop and Dr. Dre, delivering a nostalgic yet forward-looking album. Marking their first full collaboration since Doggystyle in 1993, the project promises the timeless synergy that defined West Coast hip-hop, featuring Dre's signature g-funk production infused with fresh, modern twists. The 15-track album boasts an impressive roster of guest artists, including Jhene Aiko on the lead single 'Gorgeous', Eminem, 50 Cent, Method Man, BJ the Chicago Kid and a posthumous contribution from Tom Petty on a reimagined version of 'Last Dance with Mary Jane' featuring Jelly Roll. Dre himself steps out from behind the boards, appearing as a guest on three tracks. Notable samples from Sly & The Family Stone's 'Thank You' and The Police's 'Message in a Bottle' enhance the album's funk-rich, melodic soundscapes. Missionary reaffirms Snoop and Dre's legacy as hip-hop pioneers.

Review: This album offers a smooth, nostalgic journey through classic 70s soul, with a modern twist that captures the essence of that era while infusing it with contemporary flair. The standout track, 'Rollercoaster', exemplifies the soothing, sensual style of the album, with falsetto vocals that echo the best of vintage soul. 'Mulholland Drive', a collaboration with Latoya Williams, further enhances this atmosphere, blending smooth grooves with a timeless feel. While the album leans heavily on familiar Marvin Gaye-inspired moments, tracks like 'Make Me Wanna' and 'Back To Your Place' draw listeners in with their rich, soulful melodies. The music itself is both comforting and captivating, with lush arrangements and a relaxed tempo that makes it easy to get lost in the vibe. Though some may find the album too nostalgic at times, the reverence for classic soul is clear and the execution is top-notch. For those who appreciate the golden era of r&b, this album delivers a satisfying, if sometimes familiar, experience that's sure to please fans of smooth, soulful music.

Review: A stunning tribute to the golden era of Motown and soul, infused with contemporary flair, this album is the perfect homage to a legend. Drawing inspiration from Marvin Gaye, London channels the timeless essence of classic r&b while weaving his own unique artistry into the mix. The album unfolds across three thematic setsiThe Hope, The Grind and The Ascent. With gems like the sensual 'Rollercoaster', the smooth collaboration 'Mulholland Drive' with Latoya Williams and the soulful charm of 'Make Me Wanna', October London effortlessly blends vintage soul with modern sensibilities. His falsetto vocals and lush arrangements create a soothing, nostalgic atmosphere, while the album's relaxed tempo invites listeners to immerse themselves in its rich melodies. Arriving on clear vinyl, this is an emotionally resonant journey that pays tribute to the greats while embracing the present.

Review: "Dear Marvin," comments October London on this journey through themes of love, personal discovery and modern struggles, "I'm not trying to be you. That's impossible." That said, the reverence for Gaye is - obviously - evident, this heartfelt tribute to one of soul's greatest icons is given a properly contemporary feel through Snoop Dogg-mentored London's smooth falsetto and rich production. 'Make Me Wanna' and 'Back To Your Place' are rich in vintage melodies of the 60s nand 70s, pulling listeners into their warm, comforting rhythms and the album's narrative unfolds across three sets: The Hope, The Grind and The Ascent, each exploring different facets of love and personal growth. Other highlights include 'Love Me Better' and 'The Same Love' and it's not hard to see why this accomplished effort gets the stamp of approval of the mighty Dogg himself.

Review: 30 years on, 'Doggystyle' still has a big place in the hearts of West Coast rap fans as the record that launched Snoop Doggy Dogg's solo career, after his appearance on Dr.Dre's solo debut 'The Chronic' just the year before in 1992. Snoop isn't always given the recognition he deserves from newer hip-hop fans, but the well-versed recognise 'Doggystyle' as one of the most important G-Funk records of all time, and one of the most important hip-hop records of the 20th century. This anniversary reissue is the definitive package of this crucial record, featuring the song 'Gz Up, Hoes Down', which was missing from the tracklist until 2006 due to problems with clearing the sample 'The Look of Love'. The record is a family affair, no truly big names as features and being produced entirely by Dre - that's how you know it's good.

Review: Soil & Pimp Sessions is a Japanese jazz band with an explosive sound. Made up of five musicians Shacho, Tabu Zombie, Josei on piano, Akita Goldman on bass and Midorin on drums, they are primarily an expressive live outfit who serve up rough and ready sounds that fire your every single synapse. They have been playing for 20 years now but their breakout album Pimp Master came in 2006 and saw them go on to play at Glastonbury the year after. This latest record is another exceptional one that goes from intense and complex highs to beautiful tender and vulnerable moments of calm.

Review: Cleo Sol's long-promised debut album, which hit record stores in mid-2020, was a genuinely impressive set: a fine collection of soft-focus jazz, neo-soul and R&B songs that did a great job in showcasing her talents as both a singer and songwriter. Inspired in part by Sol's experiences as a new mother, it's another superb collection of deliciously sweet and soulful songs that should resonate far beyond Sol's growing band of fans. Musically sparse but detailed - think shuffling acoustic guitars, languid beats, ear-catching electronic melodies, twinkling painos and sumptupus bass - Mother is perhaps a more obviously "neo-soul"-themed effort than its predecessor, but that's no bad thing. It has the feel of an album that will be considered a British soul classic in years to come.

Review: Alongside the widespread success of Sault, we've been able to bear witness to the continued rise of core member Cleo Sol as a standout voice in the vanguard of UK soul. Following her two previous albums Mother and Rose In The Dark, Sol stretches out once again with an arresting collection of neo soul, folk and more. Everything is cast in warm, rich tones, from the acoustic lilt of 'Airplane' to the dusky bump of 'Go Baby', but it's the strength of Sol's vocal presence which binds everything together so perfectly. Truly capturing the best of modern soul with wholly justified comparisons to Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and D'Angelo alike, this stunning album has future classic written all over it.

Review: Listen up and pay attention all serious soul heads - Cleo Sol is back with an album which confirms her position at the forefront of UK soul. Sol has a career which reaches back to the late 00s guesting for the likes of Tinie Tempah, but it's within the wider Sault orbit she's forged a renewed presence in recent years. Locked into a productive run of albums which kicked off with Rose In The Dark back in 2020, her latest long player might just be her best as she gracefully glides from piano ballads to pastoral funk, low-slung neo soul bump and beyond. Everything is bound together by her flawless voice and a persistently warm, mellow production, making this sound like a future classic in waiting.

Review: Cleo Sol has emerged on Forever Living Originals alongside the avant-gospel sensation of Sault, and in an understated way she's quickly positioned herself as one of the most compelling, original voices in UK soul. Hot on the heels of Heaven comes her third LP Gold, and it's another masterclass in low-key but wholly intentional production framing some of the most arresting singing and songwriting you're likely to hear all the way through 2024. On Gold especially there's a tendency towards a cosy, in-the-room sound from the live kit and warm keys to the subtle undercurrent of soundsystem mixing attitude, and it makes for an album you'll want to live in for days on end.

Review: Cleo Sol's arrival in the past few years has been one of the best things to happen to UK soul music in a long time, and she's gifted us two of her outstanding albums in the past 12 months. While ears are reeling from the wonder of Heaven, we're now treated to Gold and it's hard to fathom how so many incredible songs can spill out from one person. There's a dusky, understated quality to this album which makes it so easy to sink into and even in the most stripped down arrangements you can sense the guiding hand of dub giving the music a womb-like intimacy. The playing has a raw, in-the-room immediacy and it flows so naturally it wouldn't be a surprise to learn it was recorded in one take.

Review: When she started her career just over a decade ago, Cleopatra Nikolic AKA Cleo Sol was considered a singer-for-hire within the international deep house community. Now, with the assistance of beat-maker Inflo, she's decided to strike out on her own via a quietly impressive solo debut that re-casts her as a genuinely fresh and exciting soul talent. Beginning with the layered acapella vocals and deep, jazzy grooves of stunning opener "One Love", the album sees her brilliantly deliver heartfelt and thoughtful lyrics over hazy backing tracks that brilliantly join the dots between jazz, neo-soul and R&B. While she's undoubtedly the star of the show, Inflo's stripped-back, partially acoustic and largely soft-focus production is also worthy of high praise.

Review: There's a point in 'Awakening', about 2:15 in, when you realise how perfectly balanced the piece is. A sumptuous mixture of jazz, downtempo and drum & bass, just like Labour's election win, you have to ask yourself how hollow the track will turn out to be once it's actually front and centre. But regardless of the next four years, Sonic Weapon and KoolMFL's laidback afternoon bliss delivers in terms of depth and instance gratification. No mean feat, Sneaker 012 doesn't slip from thereon in. 'Suckers' is percussive opium, somehow both calming and compelling, 'K-Dub' belongs in all our hopes for hip hop instrumentals, and as we get further into things how about those warbling disco cuts ('KCAB') and organic house grooves ('I Thought It Was Lonnie')? Let's leave it there then.

Review: UK rapper Sonnyjim and producer Giallo Point deliver a cinematic masterclass in street rap on their new collaborative album. Sonnyjim's razor-sharp wit and sardonic charm cut through every bar of No Vi$ible Means of Income 3 while weaving tales of crime, luxury and survival with grit but also lyrical elegance. Giallo Point crafts lush, noir-inspired backdrops full of moody strings, dusty loops and crisp drums that feel ripped from a gangster flick. The album stays proudly UK-rooted with top-tier guest spots from Jehst, P4VAN, Juga-Naut, Farma G and Beny Laylo, all of whom help make an immersive world of suspense and swagger. British hip-hop at its most refined and raw.

Review: There are few more classic albums that are ripe for reissue on National Album Day than this one from British funk and soul pioneers Soul II Soul. It is now 35 years old but has more than stood the test of time and this picture disc version is the ultimate collectors piece featuring the group's signature Funki Dredd logo. Musically it has all the key singles 'Fairplay', which led the way for unparalleled chart success here and in the US, as well as follow-up, 'Feel Free', third single 'Keep on Movin'' and plenty more, all of which still get big reactions in any set to this day.

Review: Three years ago, Dutch multi-instrumentalist and producer Noam Offir unveiled his debut album as Soul Supreme, a vividly realised fusion of jazz-funk, jazz-fusion, hip-hop, soul and electrofunk flavours that boasted impeccable musicianship. Poetic Justice, the rising star's hotly anticipated follow-up, continues in a similar vein whilst aiming higher. The musicianship is, if anything, even better, with liberal use of horns, P-funk synth sounds, Clavinet, warming electric piano motifs, loose limbed drums (blessed with the swing of live drums, but - we think - MPC-powered). It's basically the same old super Soul Supreme sound, taken to the next level. As a result, Poetic Justice is even better than its lauded predecessor. Don't sleep on this one!

Review: Montezuma's Revenge is the fifth studio album by Souls Of Mischief, the Oakland, CA hip-hop quartet and splinter group of the mighty Hieroglyphics Crew. Now the first-ever vinyl reissue of this 18-track font of Aztec hip-hop ambrosia is upon us. Notably, the album's striking cover featured a fifth member of the group: the legendarily innovative producer Prince Paul, who executive produced the LP, handling most of the beats and overseeing the musical direction of the album from start to finish. Paul accompanies MCs A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai as they take turns over multisyllabic flows, witty similes and smooth lyrics, deploying a dry, arid and untreated boom-bap sound; these punishing phonics do timeless justice to a certain mid-90s Cali rap sound, embalming its beats in a rigid, desiccating wrap.

Review: In 1995, Oakland's Souls of Mischief released No Man's Land, the follow-up to their iconic debut and it didn't disappoint hardcore fans but despite its brilliance, this golden-era hip-hop gem was often overlooked and never received a commercial vinyl release in the US. To this day, it remains without an official US reissue but now that changes this Record Star Day. Get On Down celebrates this classic with a special double LP release presented in a gatefold jacket pressed on eye-catching "Tide Pod" colour vinyl. It's packed with classic hip-hop heat, free-flowing bars and signature soul from this iconic outfit.

Review: There are very few albums across any genre that stand the test of time better than 93 'Til Infinity, the classic debut record from the Hieroglyphics Crew's very own Souls Of Mischief. In an era where gangsta rap and g-funk dominated the West Coast rap scene, Souls broke ground on a completely unique and thoroughly West Coast tip. While the Dres and the Snoop Doggs were garnering much of the mainstream attention of the day, Souls were quietly forging a charismatic, critically acclaimed and cohesively shaped record that when categorised, sounded much closer to a tribe called quest than N.W.A.. The resulting sound of their debut is characteristic of the distinct style explored by the collective, including a rhyme scheme based on internal rhyme and beats centered around a live bass and obscure jazz and funk samples.

Review: The changing face of nu-jazz is heard mutating once more on this third album by Soulstatejazz, released via the Chapelle XIV label. Band-led by multi-instrumental talent Tom Ellis - who is here heard on drums, percs, bass, guitars, piano and synths - he's backed up by Bugu Pala and Charles Morgan on vocals, Michiel Renger on tenor sax, Dave Elson on electronic percussion and Vicky Flint on trumpet and flute. The result is a rich, hypnotic and swirling journey through the wateriest ends of improv-based electronic jazz, making for a landmark new album.

Review: Space Ghost has most recently been spotted dropping excellent albums "Aquarium Nightclub" and "Endless Light" on Tartelet, but now he's made a swerve for Funkineven's Apron Records to drop this sultry collection of jams that match bittersweet keys with rubbery bass and plenty of crooked funk that calls to mind broken beat and boogie as much as house music. From the swanging funk of "Prayer For U" to the slow jam New Jack Swing of "Mystery Angel", this is an album that champions some great eras of black music very much in the vein of Apron overall, but still says its own thing. Soulful at every turn and finished with an '80s digital veneer so slick you could trip on it.
