Review: Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner (Sons Of Kemet) finally deliver on their much-hyped The Smile project, blending the anxious and synaptic tones of Radiohead's anthemic indie-electro with the bluer party tones of UK jazz. The new album features a slew of tracks with swelling strings recorded by the full brass section of the London Contemporary Orchestra, as well as a band of jazz players like Theon and Nathaniel Cross and Robert Stillman.

Review: NOIR was Smino's second album and a great progression from the first. It originally came in 2018 under Interscope/Downtown Records and it built on debut BLKSWN with some stylish forays into the worlds of neo-soul, funk, hip hop, and r&b. Across a diverse range of sounds, NOIR features standout singles like 'Z4L,' 'KLINK,' 'LMF,' and "FENTY SEX' and includes guest appearances from the likes of Ravyn Lenae, Dreezy, and Valee. Not only is 'Tequila Mockingbird' our favourite track title on the album but it's also a lovely track that blends classic dub with yearning r&b vocals and jazzy musicality.

Review: For their first album away from spiritual home Claremont 56, Ben Smith and Paul "Mudd" Murphy have decided to put a decidedly Balearic slant on the kind of atmospheric and quirky music that once was the mainstay of library music stalwarts KPM Records. Given their influences and seemingly innate ability to create heart-stopping, mind-soothing soundscapes, it's a canny move. Certainly, the music contained on "Tea With Holger" is impeccable, combining picturesque guitar and piano motifs with lilting easy listening orchestration, heady choral vocals, razor sharp strings and nods to various well-known TV and film soundtrack styles. Yet for all the knowing nods to old library music sounds, it's the quality of the duo's emotive and inspiring compositions that stands out.

Review: In recent times, crate-digging hero Andy Smith has turned his attention to the world of disco and boogie, showcasing the depth of his collection as part of the Reach Up collective. It seems fitting, then, that his latest compilation - a triple-vinyl epic - should explore the disco and electrofunk gems lurking in his vast vault of records. There are a few well-known gems (Disco Dub Band, World Premiere, Freedom and Sure Thing's modern electrofunk anthem "Holding Me Tight", for starters), but far more overlooked or slept-on gems (Advance's boogie killer "Take Me To The Top" and Jimmy Bo Horne's "Is It In" being great examples). The collection also boasts a couple of tasty re-edits, including an unheard one by Smith and pal Nick Halkes of Jimmy Ross's Paradise Garage anthem "First True Love Affair".

Review: New York Blues Hall of Fame inductee Bette Smith returns with her third album, Goodthing, which blends soul, gospel, and rock & roll. Produced by Grammy winner Jimmy Hogarth, the album features anthemic soul rock sounds driven by Smith's raspy, soulful vocals and rather reminiscent of the late great Tina Turner, as well as Aretha Franklin and Etta James. Influenced by her childhood in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, Smith merges street-corner soul with the gospel music her mother loved. Building on the success of her previous albums, Jetlagger and The Good, The Bad, and The Bette, this new work again showcases her powerful range and solidifies her as a dynamic and ever-rising soul artist.

Review: Some 15 years after its original release in 2009, This Is ... by Gizelle Smith & The Mighty Mocambos remains a classic in the sister funk genre. Raw, melodic, and vibrant, the album hasn't aged a bit and now, as a result of that, it's being re-released with unreleased bonus tracks, rare remixes and a limited-edition double vinyl. With standout tracks like 'Working Woman,' which became a global DJ fav, the album brims with Gizelle Smith's unique style and powerful vocals. Blazing horns, soulful guitars and dynamic production all help bring them to life on a record that is rooted in the golden era of soul but coloured with modern charm.

Each track on the record was originally conceived solo, then further realised with the assistance of contributing musicians Sofiane Brahmi and Javier Vivancos. The collaborative where no studio sessions occurred due to the pandemic - the full collaboration conducted remotely. Notable tracks include the seething post-punk swagger of "Black Scarlet" or the brooding industrial rock of "Sway", to the industrial strength breaks of "Never Break Faith" and a frantic techno banger towards the end "I Wanna Be An Idol".

Review: Offering up a fly-on-the-wall earful of the legendary punk spoken word songstress at the peak of her prowess, First We Take Manhattan is a live LP captured at New York City's iconic CBGB's on August 11th 1979, whilst touring in promotion of the Todd Rundgren-produced Wave, which would mark the third and final album billed under the Patti Smith Group. Whilst receiving somewhat of a mixed reception upon release due its more radio-friendly oriented sound, longtime staples such as 'Frederick', 'Seven Ways Of Going' and 'Dancing Barefoot' all make appearances, exuding Smith's unbothered stance towards critical reception, while also making room for Easter deep cut 'Space Monkey', as well as a reliably hefty dose of material from her classic 1975 debut solo LP Horses, including 'Redondo Beach' and 'Kimberly'.

Review: The Tiger Rock long player from Tiger B. Smith roars back into circulation here thanks to a vinyl reissue that will please fans of heavy sounds. The album marked the band's 1972 debut and is an archetypal work from the German heavy rock trio. It takes some obvious inspiration from the electrifying energy of Jimi Hendrix and adds to that plenty of raw and powerful kraut-psych sound. It features the standout nine-minute epic 'To Hell' which is a real thrash delight with gritty riffs and rhythms all showcasing their fearless approach to heavy rock. Tiger Rock captures the spirit of experimentation and intensity that defined the Krautrock era.

Review: The third of the four 'proper' studio albums by The Smiths caught at demo stage. These may be demos, but the legendary Mancunian four piece had got to a place of success by this point in their short lived career that even they are recorded in succelent quality and sonic detail, some of the time so well recorded you're convinced you're listening to the finished article. There's a breezy, relaxed feel to these recordings, though, which contain early versions of pretty much the entire classic album, sadly save the title track which was concocted in the final studio sessions. Catnip for Smiths completitsts, but the less devoted will find much to like here too.

A Charming Man In Amsterdam is a concert that was arranged in order to mark the 50th anniversary of a Dutch magazine, Vinyl (imagine that happening today!). It was the iconinc Manchester band's first ever show in the Netherlands and they serve up a set revolving around their eponymous debut album and early singles, with 'Miserable Lie', 'I Don't Owe You Anything' and 'These Things Take Time' sounding particularly grand.

Review: Independent New York City rapper Smoke DZA and LA beatmaker Flying Lotus are hip-hop heavyweights in their own right but now they come together for their new EP Flying Objects with a bunch of equally high-profile guests such as Black Thought from The Roots, plus Estelle, Conway The Machine, and more. Together they have cooked up a mind-altering sonic trip featuring spaced-out pads and crunchy beats. The bars are hard and speak of the Black experience and the synths are often otherworldly and celestial as they soften the edges of the lyrics. Another great project from both.

Review: After being commissioned to produce several 'interlocking' ambient pieces for an art gallery piece in LA, Brian Foote and Sage Caswell decided to take the concept of 'audience crossfading' to the next level, creating an entire ambient album using a particular sonic technique. Over five long pieces from 'Waterwheel' to 'Smiley', their aim was to evoke the feeling of bodies moving in thoroughfares. The tracks are long-exposed movements captured in ambient space, blending rhythms and soundscapes for chillout rooms that exist only in memory now.

Powerful, hooky and characterised consistently by John Turrell's gutsy, heart-punching vocal style, across the set we're blessed with everything from sparkling disco ("Beggarman") to stomping northern soul ("I'm A Man") via lavish 80s style funk and straight up Hammond slapping sweaty funk ("Lay It On Me"). A fittingly supersize sized set to celebrate a landmark anniversary for the northern troupe; here's to another 10 years.

As a crw committed to documenting their live process through gig recordings and live streams alike, it's no surprise to find this album - penned as a love letter to Dallas, reportedly - was captured in the moment. That's testament to the staggering skill of all concerned, from League at the helm to each and every player across this epic ensemble cast. The great thing is you can also check in on the video from each session and see the very moment these tracks got laid down, just in case you needed convincing how absolutely legit the Snarks really are.

Review: SND & RTN show their class here with a set of six sublime dub techno cuts that have been pressed to nice solver and heavyweight vinyl. There is nothing groundbreaking about the music here but what is done is done to an exceptionally high standard. The sound designs are faultless, from the bottomless bass to the pilot kick drums via the way in which their fizzing chords do nimble dances over the face of each tune. Some lean into the wind, some are utterly horizontal, all are great.

Review: Oakland's SNDTRAK dropped his long awaited debut album back in 2021. It was a big hit right off the bat and now it gets a welcome reissue. These are snappy beats with rolling drums, deep hip hop instrumentals that bring the best of the dusty school to fresh new school thinking. Delicate melodies are buried within, soulful vocal smears drift in and out of ear shot and well played bass slowly rotate sunder the tunes to bring languid funk. Sunny and heart aching, heat damaged and stoned, this is a warming soundtrack on many different levels.

Review: This newly assembled compilation is a great example of Snoop Dogg's enduring influence in hip-hop. The record features collaborations with fellow legends such as Nate Dogg and Warren G who deliver classic tracks such as 'Never Leave Me Alone' and 'Friends.' While it doesn't introduce new material, the collection serves as a testament to Snoop's vast bay of worth and is a nostalgic journey through his extensive career. The inclusion of both well-known hits and deeper cuts provides a comprehensive look at his collaborations and brings out different sides to his sounds and styles to his bars. It's a fun, essential slab of wax.

Review: Closer is the second album by disco producer and singer Gino Soccio, originally released in 1981 on Atlantic Records and RFC Records. The album features six tracks of catchy and groovy disco music, with influences from funk, soul and pop. The album includes the hit single 'Try It Out', as well as 'Street Talk', a smooth and soulful track with its guitar riff and a saxophone solo. This is one of those truly classic disco albums and showcases the legendary Canadian producer's talent and style.

He had a US Hot 100 entry with his 1979 tune 'Dancer' and 'Dance To Dance' both off this album, then hit top spot on the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart with later single 'Try It Out' in 1981. His electronic blend of disco, funk and soul is embellished with horns, percussion, drums, flute and guitar from an array of musicians who joined him in the studio. This version comes on purple marble vinyl.

Review: American jazz pianist Tom Sochas delights fans here by finally unveiling a long awaited debut album. Oh this long player, Sochas mixes up a love of hard hitting post- bop with an on going passion for western classical repertoire and results in richly textural and emotive sounds that range from Monk-style to much more delicate in nature. Spaced out analog electronics add extra layers tot he majestic keys and drums and long- time collaborators Julian Knapp on saxophone and Laurie Carpenter on trumpet also add plenty of extra feeling and flavour.

Review: Southern Californian punk legends Social Distortion dropped their vital debut album Mommy's Little Monster four whole decades ago now. To mark the anniversary it is getting a special 40th edition reissue and has been freshly mastered from the original analogue tapes and pressed up to 180-gram vinyl for the occasion. The nine songs that were on the original release of the album all feature such as the much loved title track 'Mommy's Little Monster' and single 'Another State of Mind'. Proper original punk business from the US greats.

Review: Live set recording is an underrated art. It's about capturing the feel of the room as much as it is about showcasing a band's live prowess. Thankfully, punk godfathers Social Distortion appear to realise this and have nailed it with their live acoustic recordings. The band are known for their signature sound of punk, bluesy rock n' roll and outlaw country and the acoustic versions give the band a chance to highlight their versatility, ramp up the country/folk side and gives singer Mike Ness the spotlight. Swapping out the thrashy power chords for something janglier and jollier, their Johnny Cash cover 'Ring Of Fire' is pure joy. 'Cold Feelings' features a terrific counter melody from the accordion and the overall atmosphere of the song makes it easy to feel transported to a ye olde tavern somewhere in Ireland, sat around a table with a roaring fire, with the wind blowing outside. Elsewhere, 'Down Here With The Rest Of Us' is Social Distortion at their emotionally charged best. Remarkable here is the restraint shown by a band who usually just let rip. You'd be forgiven for thinking they weren't full-time into this acoustic thing.

Review: Originally released in 1992, the fifth full-length from the German thrash metal pioneers marked a notable embracing of more modern metallic composition, pulling from the burgeoning death metal sound to help sharpen their sonic assault. What resulted was a band who originally formed in 1981 proving they could still go riff for riff with any of their more youthful contemporaries with a barrage of their most frenetic, fast-paced speed-thrash up to that point in their career. Their final effort with founding drummer Chris Witchhunter, the LP also marked the debut of guitarist Andy Brings and now comes home newly remastered and spread out across a lush red vinyl 2xLP.

Review: Soffplaneten takes us deep into a world of downtempo delight with the Samlar Damm LP on Sunken Rock Recordings. It is an eight-track odyssey that veers from the gentle rhythms of the opener to the languid dub rotations of 'Kom Till Mitt Talt' complete with twanging guitars and soulful vocal seductions. 'Hoga Mamma Moln' is a more percussive and upbeat cut built from loose drums and tin pot percussion but held together with smeared and heat-damaged chords. 'Tunnelbanan' is a whacked-out and laid-back stoner joint while 'En Suddig Musik' gets more experimental and unusual in its sonic collage. A wonderfully irreverent new take on Balearic overall.

Review: In 1969 Soft Machine were truly growing into the otherworldly entity they're best known as now, moving on from the more psychedelia-rooted sound of the debut album into the broader expanse presented on Volume Two. This live recording captures them in full flight at the legendary Bataclan in Paris, and the wild creative vision of Robert Wyatt's merry pranksters splays out from the ominous drum intro onwards, through towering crescendos of musicality that touch on noticeable album moments such as the 'Esther's Nose Job' suite from Volume Two to 'Moon In June', which would be released one year later on Third.

This solo project started as a means to explore sounds that don't fall in the Mateos world - which is not many, to be honest. There is rave, dark metal, crust punk and plenty of genre curiosities all drawn up on here with the results managing to be both ethereal and hypnotic. Of the title, Daniel explained it's an actual question proposed to him which has become a mantra of sorts, with the album created as a way to imagine possible musical responses to her question. Created during Covid lockdowns, Daniel recruited a virtual disco band from friends across the world and traversing many genres such as disco, minimalism, ambient, shoegaze and jazz, then pieced together in his Baltimore studio. Guests include Turkish arranger Ulas Kurugullu, Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xu, Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Flock of Dimes), Brooklyn techno artist Rose E Kross and Daniel Clark.

Review: "Sketching The Unknown" is a terrific name for an album, particularly for a deep modal jazz set that aims to draw maximum influence from "the folk and modal music of ancient Greece". We're not knowledgeable enough on Greek musical traditions to say whether or not saxophonist Sokratis Votskos and his quartet have successfully accomplished that aim, but we can confirm that "Sketching The Unknown" is superb. Brilliantly arranged, played and produced with surprises around every corner, it's one of the boldest and inventive jazz sets we've heard for some time. There's no fusion antics, sampled hip-hop beats or modern studio trickery, just five high quality jazz cuts that sound like they will last the test of time.

Review: The Sokratis Votskos Quartet features Kostas Anastasiadis and Giorgos Klountzos on drums, Leandros Pasias on piano, Vaggelis Vrachnos on contrabass and Sokratis Votskos on soprano sax, bass clarinet and composition and they have a fulsome and electrifying jazz sound that pays homage to greats of the genre such as Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane. This album celebrates life with expressionistic solos, sweeping arrangements and plenty of off-grid rhythmic drama, all of which was recorded during the challenging COVID-era and no doubt distils the highs and lows of those times into the music.

Review: Saxophonist Elin Forkelid and guitarist David Stakenas return with a dynamic follow-up to 2022's What Year Is It? on which they are joined by drummer Anna Lund and bassist Mauritz Agnas. This quartet delivers a bold mix of free jazz, distorted guitars, and thunderous baritone sax over approximately 50 minutes of musical thrills. Their sound melds influences from Carla Bley, Joni Mitchell, Ornette Coleman, and Bill Frisell into hard-edged, propulsive compositions. The opener, 'Elena' evolves into a hypnotic piece reminiscent of Coltrane, Stakenas' tracks like 'If Not' and 'Marbles' showcase Frisell's heavy delay influence and the album crescendos with 'Hello Again, Paul,' featuring an over-the-top baritone sax reminiscent of early 1970s rock.

Review: In 1981, as the punk genre began to simultaneously expand and collapse in on itself, well across the pond, a group known as Solucion Mortal would stake their claim as arguably the most vital Mexican punk band to ever exist. Hailing from Tijuana, the bevvy of crusty influences smashed against the group's own perception of what punk meant to them, evidenced greatly by their pummelling debut, 'Live At Fairmont'. This self-titled compilation includes the entire full-length, along with the cassette release, 'En Iguanas', as well as a choice cut from, 'Al Filo De Abismo.' If you feel a slight pang of fomo (fear of missing out) that you've never delved into the criminally overlooked work of Mexico's seminal punk contributors, this collection serves as the perfect crash course.

Review: Alex Somers has spent much of his hugely successful career either composing music for film and TV, or producing other artists. It's for that reason that it's taken him some time to deliver a debut solo album, though to make up for this he's simultaneously releasing two sets - Siblings and Siblings 2 - both of which feature music mostly recorded between 2014 and 2016. On Siblings, Somers dazzles with his versatility, offering a mixture of haunting, emotive and mind-altering compositions that frequently blur the boundaries between experimental electronica, neo-classical and ambient. The Los Angeles-based producer frequently combines swelling orchestration with crackly field recordings, ethereal vocalisations, immersive synthesizer sounds and off-kilter electronic sounds, resulting in a hazy, otherworldly musical journey that rewards repeat listens.

Big synth blasts and steamroller drums ('The Holy Breaks'), ominous tension and rising drama ('Fatal Crash Test') and the all-essential de-climatising end-of-journey meltdown ('The Shadow & The Light') A stunning Sonic trip in all the right ways.

Review: Sonic Youth's vaults get plundered for the umpteenth time here, but it's a no less welcome feat than the times it's happened before. 'In/Out/In', compiled in collaboration with US label Three Lobed, gathers 5 lost cuts never heard before from the band. Rather than being pulled from their late-80s and 90s heyday, all these bits were recorded in the noughties, as part of a spate of studio and writing jams that led to the bulk of their 2009 album 'The Eternal'. Raucousness is abandoned for slow-building, ethereal post rock: 'In & Out' nails a ritual jig in 2/4, while 'Social Static' and 'Machine' lend wailing noise and alarms to consonantly emotive chords and Gordon's teeth-clenched vocals.

Review: The first release on SOS Gunver Ryberg's own imprint, Arterial Recordings, is a great example of how wrong assumptions and presumptions can be when based on labels. And no, we don't mean record labels. Ryberg is an award-winning sound artist, but what do we mean when we say things like that? Is it the dense theoretical and conceptual sonics designed solely as installations within the institutions of art itself, or something more tangibly recognisable as 'music' itself? Maybe it's neither. It can definitely be both. Spine proves that last point wonderfully. Yes, this is electronic music at the bleeding edge, strange aural worlds crafted from noises and gadgets that could be the controls of a space craft from the future for all the average person might know. But the tracks here are definite and deliberately designed to be heard as tracks, whether that's the serene, floating-past-the-cosmos ambience of 'Sensuous Sky', or the frantic breakbeat tension of the title track.

Review: DJ Sotofett is a cult hero with a sound that is never less than eccentric. This new album Braindance on Sued is a collection of material the mercurial one has written between 2002 and 2020. All of the tracks are short but high impact in different ways and despite some of them being the best part of 20 years old and pre-dating all the famous Sex Tags projects they still bang. Thrilling breaks, icy techno, mashed up jungle and deeper, more acid laced late night grooves all feature and offer a window into the mind of one of electronica's most vital talents.

Review: There's always been something very New York about New York alt-rock troupe Soul Coughing. First and foremost, their determination to avoid the nightmarish pigeonholes of non-descriptions like 'alt-rock'. In fact, at least half of Ruby Vroom, their 1994 debut, sounds more like hip hop, funk and some pretty weird skate take on electronica. And even then we're pretty far off the mark here. At times, things feel a bit Dog Eat Dog. In other moments, we're more in the vein of rap experimenters N.A.S.A.. Then it might be Dinosaur Jr in their lackadaisical 'Feel The Pain' mode. The list could continue, but the point remains the same - this is unapologetically unique, rather than broad, and as such is either going to bore a route straight to your heart, or challenge the ears.
