Review: Back in stock. The second part of Mika Vainio's silver series (along with Sahko001), this EP is something of a techno classic. It would later appear on the Tulkinta album, but the 12" has been out of press for over ten years, so it is wonderful to see this back on the shelves, to entice a new generation of listeners into its glorious analogue techno world. What I find so endearing about the Ø records is Vainio's ability to make minimal, edgy techno music sound so glacial and other-worldly. An Ø record sounds exactly like an Ø record and in the twelve years since this was released, nobody has managed to match or recreate anything to come close to these tracks. You know what to do, grab this now before it disappears for another ten years! Totally unmissable.

Viimeined Monni (The Last Catfish)
Jaan Alla (Beneath The Ice)
Review: Back in stock. My word! This amazing, ice cool four track excursion into dark ambience and swirling spooky minimalism is at long last with us again. "Näkinkenkä (Shell)" sounds like early electro-acoustic droneage ala Charlemagne Palestine but with a 21st century edge - absolutely lush. "Suomot (Scales)" is purest early Sähkö, amazing and weird like the finest slo-mo Richie Hawtin minimal throb filtered through Delia Derbyshire's Radiophonic Workshop wires, killer. "Viimeinen Monni (The Last Catfish)" is amazing - deep bass, Rhythm & Sound vibed background static, minimal melodic drops - too, too much. Lastly comes "Jään Alla (Beneath The Ice)" which is a perfectly formed classically influenced repetitive piece. An amazing end to an amazing 12", buy or die.

Review: Back in stock. What a treat this is, badged up with the catalogue number Sahko 1.5 this is material from Ø, aka Mika Vainio which has never been previously released on vinyl! The tracks were written in 1993, some time in between the Sahko 001 and the Sahko 002 EPs, and released on the absolutely seminal "Tulkinta" album - it has taken 10 years for them to surface finally on wax. Now thank goodness you can play these tracks as they really should be heard, very loud and possibly in a sweaty club, getting your minimal groove on. With massive support recently from none other than the hairstyle-challenged Richie Hawtin, who featured a whole heap of Ø tracks in his latest "DE9" mix CD, this release couldn't be more timely and more desired. My suggestion would be to get hold of this now before it disappears once more forever.

1Dan - "Foundations"
Bittersuite - "Squeeze In"
Miles Sagnia - "Can We Heal Them?"
Review: Atmospheric Existence Recordings keep up their annual release rate with label boss Miles Sagnia inviting 1Dan and Bittersuite to join him on only the third release. Newcomer 1Dan opens proceedings with the sprawling soft machine funk flex of "Foundations", a track driven by gutter deep bass movements, steppy syncopation and rich sonic textures that no doubt helped influence the title of the EP. On the flip Bittersuite step forward with the upwards acid dub pressure of "Squeeze In" which steadily accrues an acidic overtone before a delightful left turn into a futuristic mechano soul rhythmic thrust. It's left to Sagnia to provide the final moment with the tightly relentless throb of "Can We Heal Them" that slowly reveals its inner acid brilliance.

Review: Masterbuilders and 4 Sides each contributing two cuts on this jamming four-track release from the quality Soulfuric Deep imprint. Label boss Brian Tappert is all over this one, with a tasty Latin bump and synths galore on his remix of 4 Siders "Sol Y Mas", a vibetastic dancefloor cut. Tasty summer nuggets for the dancefloor.

A Morgan's 'Air' is urgent and cosmic a la Jeff Mills, Dc11's 'It's All An Act' layers up deft synth details with sleek linear rhythms and Judy's 'Bide Luzea' is a hurried, pulsing, late-night mental techno trip. A further deep and heady trio of tunes features on the B-side with Bassywax's sub-aquatic sound world on 'Amona Left Us Overnight' taking the headlines for us.

Review: Since Zip and Villalobos made it one of their coveted deep digs to be heard pealing out of a thousand after hours sessions, the Metamatics remix of A1 People has been a teasingly out of reach dream grab for many a minimal electro head. Now Yossi Amoyal has done the good deed of getting the track remastered and repressed as part of his Fluere series toasting 15 years of Sushitech. As well as that masterclass of elegant machine funk, there's also Kosmogonik's mind-bendingly brilliant 'Circuitry', Silicon Scally's body-popping electro-noir 'Relay' and Matt Chester's melancholic 'November Pathways' to keep your up-all-night marathon sets peppered with spangled surprises.

Review: After a successful first round that featured the likes of Kassem Mosse alongside Juniper and some lesser known friends of the label, Manchester promoters-turned-imprint Meandyou are back with another various artists release that plumbs further depths around the fringe pools of house and techno. Aatropa & Tephillin deliver the most upfront cut in "Bells Jam", which still lurks in oddball synth flourishes around a chunky thud of kick drum, before Fabric drifts out into ambient bliss. Herron meanwhile plies a long lead-in before blossoming into a dexterous and delicate broken techno formation of the highest order, and then Metropolis cools things back down with a winsome groan of a beatless excursion.

'Atomic' is proper old school acid house reminiscent of the glory days of Trax Records and featuring Mikey V's sleazy vocal delivery atop which really brings it together. Review: Stop yourself in for another rugged ride through electro and techno from the vanguard here as Thisbe Recordings serves up a fifth fantastic slab of wax. It's a fine various artists affair that kicks off with Acid Washed and the legendary Arnaud Rebotini. Their 'Brandtaucher' is a polished metal and electro tinged disco cut with bleeping melodies. Seb El Zin then keeps it real raw with 'Lingua Minimalista' and the energy doesn't dip on Rambal Cochet's flip side opener 'Oseary Drakoulias' races to the star on slap funk bass and cruising melodies. Mount Kismet's 'Sirocco' rides on rugged arps and last of all Danton Eeprom's 'L'Homme Canon' slows right down to an electro-funk and boogie down workout.

Tembezi (Marcellus Pittman remix)
Review: Internasjonal pull a curveball with the delightful afro house stylings of "Tembezi" from the unheralded Ackin'. Featuring the poignant vocal talents of M. Akamatsu, there are multiple charms to "Tembezi" which brandishes the sort of richly textured rhythms and melancholic piano improvisations that can't help but encourage the movement of feet. This being an Internasjonal release there is an accompanying Prins Thomas remix that winds down the tempo to a more cosmic level without losing any of the original's tinkling delights but our favourite thing about this record is the final remix from 3 Chairs originator Marcellus Pittman. Adopting a bumpier note, Pittman's talent for crafting emotive synth melodies and dubbed piano chords shines through with positively incandescent results.

Money Chicha - "Carnaval De Jujuy" (3:07)
Review: A new take on a Jonathan Richman classic from 1977 which has lit up clubs for 45-odd years, especially during the punk era. The track's infectious rhythm has inspired various reggae remixes but now it's getting a fresh cumbia twist. Cumbia and reggae share a common groove, making them a perfect match for DJs to mix and this one was recorded in Lima by Pancho Acosta, founder and guitarist of Company Quinto, who transforms the track into an upbeat cumbia gem. The flip side features Acosta's 'Carnaval de Jujuy' blended with Money Chicha's modern take on Peru's fuzzed-out chicha sound.

Review: Groovin Recordings is kicking off a new series in brilliant style here with three killer disco-boogie tracks. They were all first released between 1979 and 1982 and first up is Arthur Adams with 'You Got The Floor.' It's an uber cool groove with AOR vocals, loose drum funk and sprinkles of disco dust. There is more theatre to the soaring strings of Millie Jackson's 'We Got To Hit It Off' which has rickety drum loops and funky bass riffs. C-Brand's 'Wired For Games' closes won and might be the best of the lot with its coy male vocal, playful guitar twangs and nice raw claps.

Review: The ever-correct Prime Numbers series is still going strong, this time bringing together a thoroughly eclectic range of producers to lay down some solid club fodder. Adesse adopts the tenderest approach, bringing a soft African lilt to a subtle arrangement of light drums and poignant chords with the whole A side to drape a deep house opus over. Truss is certainly in no mood to chill on "Redbrook", going for a big room techno flavour that favours rigid beats, acid parps and epic swathes of organ. Massimo Di Lena is on a far more twitchy tip, with a snagging assortment of percussion and some woozy synths that leave one feeling wonderfully dizzy.

Label boss ADMN, a local staple of the scene affiliated with Paxahau and Movement Festival, makes his vinyl debut here alongside Mister Joshooa (My Baby) with the low slung minimal tech house of "LFOs Are Tight" which is absolutely perfect tackle for the afterhour. Ron Hardy - "Sensation" (Richard Sen edit)
Mr Lee - "Pump Up Chicago" (JD Twitch edit)
Review: Whilst all the vinyl samplers for this DJ History curated Trax Re-edit compilation are worth investigating, it's perhaps this third volume that screams essential the most by virtue of the presence of JD Twitch, Andy Blake, Richard Sen, Toby Tobias and Hardway Bros as the resident re-editors. Nor do they disappoint either as Hardway Bros team up with Rekids type Tobias and introduce some driving energetic synth patterns into Adonis' "We're Rocking Down This House" as well as embellishing the bottom end for a modern day warehouse thumper. Equally good is Cave Painter Andy Blake teasing out the rubbery off kilter undertones to Willy Wonka's spoken word drum machine thriller "What Is House" whilst retaining the raw, stuttering core. On the flip, Richard Sen goes deep on the signature synth stabs to Ron Hardy's "Sensation" which will destroy the more discerning dancefloors out there. Finally JD Twitch strips Mr. Lee's "Pump Up Chicago" of its really quite silly overtones and twists the track into a brilliantly hypnotic and menacing acid tinged late night jacker

"Eurodynamic" is darkside aquatic electro for freaks that fans of Dopplereffekt will equally admire. "Diverse Scope" intensifies things with a fierce beat assault and an epic sci-fi atmosphere. Review: Last seen on that blinding Rare Birds release for Jon Rust's Levels label, Estonia's most famous son Raul Saaremets, aka Ajukaja, returns with a new collaborative release with Maria Minerva on his own Porridge Bullet label. Whilst Minerva's found acclaim for her material on Amanda Brown's 100% Silk label, working with Ajukaja tends to bring out the wonderfully weird side in her and that's definitely the case on the C U Again EP. Opening track "C U Again" will coax listeners in, with Saaremets' crisp house backbone the perfect accompaniment to those detuned synths and Minerva's distinct vocal delivery. "Bring Me Down" is reminiscent of early Hype Williams, whilst "All The Heart Breaks" is a hi NRG anthem that will be embraced by the Dalston Superstore set and the psychedelically charged "Igav Ja Suva" defies easy categorisation.

Review: Stochastic Resonance come through correct with their sixth instalment of the series, this time bringing together the talents of Akamoi, Ynaktera, Cosmonauta, Mariano, Ghostphace and Scual for a proper stirring of the senses on this noisy, drone-laden beat of an EP. Akamoi starts with furious swells on morphing feedback soundscapes, while Ynaktera goes for a pixelated sample workout recalling Pan's Jar Moff. Mariano's "Mysterious Ways" sets the dance tempo, amalgamating a twisted, slightly off beat pattern with bleeps and stabs and "Rome Boredom" by Ghostphace is another special moment - quick, psychotic synths fall into an absolutely terrifying ocean of distortion and satanic noise infusions. Review: Tom Browne's 1980 single 'Funkin' For Jamaica' has long been something of an anthem - a hybrid funk/boogie classic that remains a staple in sets of hip-hop, disco and soul DJs alike. Given its ubiquity, covering the song is fraught with danger, but remarkably Japanese producer Akiko and guest vocalist Mbanja Richy have successfully put a new spin on it. Their take is subtly tougher and more synth-heavy, with bilingual French/English vocals, nods to Zouk music and a bassline so squelchy it could have been lifted from a P-funk record. Over on the flip, the pair go mellow, deep and laidback on a pleasingly skewed hip-hop soul cover of Terry Callier's legendary vocal interpretation of Alex North's 'Love Theme' from 'Spartacus'. Inspired stuff all told.

Review: Croatian crate diggers and disco doyens Legalize Lambada come correct with their second EP: Swedish Frisbee chucker Albion takes the lead with two contrasting slices: Like a big old furry beast, "Yetti" bears demonic vocal teeth but shows a much softer side through its instrumentation while "Into Infinity" is, as its name suggests, pure cosmicity. Flip for a trip to Austria with Mike Burns as we're treated to early '80s European disco, "Enyin," and a bumper-to-bumper yacht hymn "This Ground". Lambada licking good. So good, in fact, it has to be illegal.

Alemayehu Eshete - "Tchero Adari Negn" (4:27)
Mahmoud Ahmed - "Bemin Sebeb Litlash" (4:26)
Review: The UK's Mr Bongo has been reissuing old music and putting out new tunes since the late 1980's, and the label is still going strong in 2015. This latest 7" features two of Ethiopia's greatest musicians, Alemayehu Eshete and Mahmoud Ahmed, in a head to head, split EP. On the A-side, Mr Bongo has resurfaced Eshete's "Tchero Adari Negn", a supremely funky piece with the man's own voice gliding effortlessly over hard drums and fuzy guitar riffs; "Bemim Sebeb Litlash" goes deeper and more psychedelic on the flip, and Ahmed's voice is a pleasure as always. Check their other material on Mississippi for a broader introspective.

Review: Deep house might not be getting the headlines it did a few years ago, but that actually means those who jumped on the hype train have all alighted once again and now only those truly devoted to the form remain. That means we get high quality EPs like this one from Visions Inc. Aleqs Notal takes us on a spiritual trip littered with toms and jazz-chords to kick things off before Meftah gets more experimental with a broken beat, tripped out keys and rubbery bass all sinking you into a state of trance. For those who like it more straight up, Taelue obliges, and as with all Afrikan Sciences tunes, the closer is a masterfully deep concoction.

Lego Edit - "Party Freaks" (Lego party dub) (5:59)
Review: You can always count on the Legofunk crew to bring you disco and funk edits from less mined sources that will absolutely rock it on the floor. On this instalment we have five different joints to get stuck into, from the slow Afro house throw down of Alexny's 'Meneao' to Siggatunez's slinky, soulful groover 'Boogie'. Look out for the low tempo seduction of DJ Laurel's 'Let The Good Time', which will get a warm-up slot thoroughly juiced for the night to come. The Lego Edit 'party dub' of 'Party Freaks' heads more explicitly towards peak-time house, but as ever it's delivered with heart and soul thanks to the vintage source material powering the track.

Review: After All Is Well visited his friend Martin Iveson in his UK studio, the pair had lay down a few killer cuts, but the most standout of the lot was this one, which is sort of what it might sound like if Jean-Michel Jarre did Norwegian Cosmic disco. It's defined by the Korg Monopoly's weird paraphony and is rhythmically sustained by the Arp 2600 Bass line. Who else to remix but the legendary Prins Thomas, who layers in deep, funky bass, then Telephones explore the edges of the cosmos with a Subspace mix before a beatless version is also included.

DJ DSK, Whirlwind D, Chrome, Specifik and Mr Wonderful. They pool their skills for a heavy dance floor celebration of Shanghai b-boy outfit Juice Crew that pays fine homage to MC Shan's original '88 classic 'Juice Crew Law'. Manuel Costela - "Hurt" (7:31)
Review: In the past, Allstar Motomusic has largely delivered 12" singles that tend towards the more musically vibrant end of the techno and tech-house spectrum. Interestingly, the two tracks here - the Ron Trent style brilliance of "Night Romance (featuring Debra Jones Davis") and lilting dream house soul of "Light of the Soul (featuring Sarigina Bonfa) - retain his usual soulfulness but soften the rhythmic approach. It goes without saying that it's a switch that has paid dividends. Italian producer Manuel Costa handles the B-side, first delivering the tactile, synth-heavy deep house soul of "Sunshine Love", before delivering a chunk of bass-heavy, Rhodes-rich warmth underpinned by a swinging electro beat. Top notch stuff, all told.

Review: Following up some great releases by the likes of Sam Haskin and Shacklo, One Of 4 are back with a nice various artists EP that is simply titled OOFF 003. On this one we have newcomer Altered Feast with the ethereal dub house of 'Cyborg' sounding somewhere between Samuel Andre Madsen and the Cabinet Recordings sound, and Amsterdam-based Romanian Dirty Culture finishing up the A side with the groovy and swing-fuelled groove of 'Turning Kisses To Bites'. Review: The Sole Channel boys Alix Alvarez & Mr. V back in fine form on this two-track EP of tough beats and dirty dancefloor grooves. No candy sweet vocals on the A-side "Boom Bip", just rugged electronic drums, hot key stabs and some nasty rolling basslines laying down a tough groove for the dancers and DJs alike. The flip "Sole Ocho" works another stripped-down hypnotic vibe, this time with some cut-up and looped female vocals spicing up the mix. Dark, thumping stuff that'll just sound nasty on a big system. Top shelf material from this always on-point label.

Amaning & Dizplay - "Sienna"
Mijatoho - "Something True"
Sabre - "Floating Source"
Physics - "Far East"
Review: Amaning has been bubbling under on the drum & bass scene now for some time. 'Sienna' has Amaning's stamp of quality all over it, plus a little something extra from Dizplay. Starting out with a huge string soaked intro and leading into gigantic drop. With techy sounds, tough beats and loads of low end bass, this tune really shines and leaves you panting for more. 'Something True', from Mijatoho has crisp beats and bongos, allowing the tune to roll out on to the dance floor with ease. The creeping bass line keeps building throughout the intro until it hits home at the first drop and carries the tune through a soundscape of vocal samples, choppy beats and precision editing. Superb! Sabre has been a fast rising star on the drum & bass scene this year teaming up with artists such as Alix Perez & Jenna G. His talent has been well and truly recognised. 'Floating Source' is a perfect example of just what he's capable of. Beautifully atmospheric and eerily dark at the same time, this song has so many levels to it. The continuous and repetitive bass line gets you stuck in the groove while the tough beats keep you glued to the dance floor. 'Floating Source' is a must have for anyone who likes their tunes deep, dark and soulful. Physics, the Finnish producer is brimming with confidence and it really shows in the track 'Far East'. It is a deep and atmospheric tune that follows the mood of 'Floating Source' nicely on this EP. With a heavy middle eastern feel and a tough bassline, this tune is full of interesting ideas and clever drops that take you by surprise. A fantastic end to the 'Global Sessions Volume 2'.

Jay Tripwire - "Waveform" (remix) (8:12)
Review: After a sterling run of releases from Magnus Asberg and Ted Amber, Romana hit record number five with a various artists drop which sees them widening their scope without losing the focus on sleek minimal tech house. Ted Amber sets the tone to ensure the release sits naturally in the label's arc to date, whipping up the lithe and bubbling 'Little Rain' which keeps the beat slender and lets the wiggy synth do the talking. Johnny D then steps up with the outstanding, shimmering after hours dream 'Cakitos'. Magnus Asberg brings something a little spicier to the table with 'Waveform', revelling in edgy feedback flex and twitchy bleep to create a killer club cut, and then Jay Tripwire takes on 'Waveform' and adds a smokescreen to the track to lend it to the far flung end of the dance.

Review: Sonet's second Various Artists affair is another exploration of the deep and dark end of the minimal and tech house spectrum. Denis Andreev kicks off with a weird and wonderful exploration of hypnotic rhythms overlaid with detuned chamber music sounds and wonky strings. It's brilliantly creepy and perfect for the afters. Gruia's 'La Izvoare' then operate sin a more airy and heady space with deft synth modulations over slinky drums and snaking bass. Last of all comes the heaviest and most bumping cut of the lot from Mortalyf. 'Triple' has super smooth drum loops overlaid with futuristic drones and pepper with squelchy synth textures.
