Review: Two titans of African music come together for a collaboration that will sadly never be repeated after the passing of the late Hugh Masekela. Allen's instantly recognisable drumming and Masekela's iconic trumpet are a match made in heaven - after all their paths first crossed back in the 70s thanks to Fela Kuti's galvanizing energy. Forget the throwback stuff trying to capture the spirit of the originators, this IS the originators sounding cool and deadly in every way. Funk lovers, Afrobeat heads, curious ears and dancing souls take heed - this right here is an unmissable transmission from two grandmasters in their field.

Review: Tension sees Ethio-jazz innovator Mulatu Astatke join forces with Tel Aviv's Hoodna Orchestra, creating a vibrant fusion of Astatke's signature sound with the orchestra's Afro funk dynamism. This collaboration is a masterclass in blending classic Ethio-jazz with contemporary influences. The album kicks off with 'Tension,' a track that infuses Astatke's enchanting vibraphone with a powerful rhythm section, driven by Matan Assayag's energetic drumming and a compelling brass motif. 'Major' later introduces a joyous, swinging groove, showcasing the orchestra's chemistry and Drabkin's stellar organ solo. Tracks like 'Hatula' and 'Yashan' capture a blend of intricate melodies and traditional Ethio-jazz flavours, while 'Delilah' reverently nods to Mulatu's early Latin-jazz roots. The album concludes with 'Dung Gate', a slow, mesmerising piece featuring Birenbaum's layered percussion and the brass section's evocative presence. Tension stands out as both a tribute to Astatke's legacy and a groundbreaking exploration in Ethio-jazz, marking a high point in the Hoodna Orchestra's evolving sound.

Review: Mulatu Astatke's collaboration with Tel Aviv's Hoodna Orchestra marks a vibrant reimagining of Ethio-jazz. The album, produced by Dap-King Neal Sugarman, showcases a blend of Astatke's iconic vibraphone with the Hoodna Orchestra's Afro-funk prowess. Opening with 'Tension', the track propels Astatke's signature sound into intense new rhythmic realms, featuring dynamic contributions from drummer Matan Assayag and a powerful brass section. 'Major' follows with a joyful swing, while 'Hatula' and 'Yashan' present diverse moods, from sultry to brooding, with impressive solos by organist Eitan Drabkin and baritone saxophonist Elad Gellert. 'Delilah' echoes Mulatu's Latin-jazz roots, with standout flute and guitar solos, leading into the album's closing track, 'Dung Gate'. This piece features a majestic brass and percussion finale, evoking the spirit of Sun Ra. Tension is both a tribute to Astatke's legacy and a bold new chapter in his Ethio-jazz journey, highlighting the Hoodna Orchestra's most compelling work to date.

Review: In 2018, three-time Grammy Award-winning violinist Hilary Hahn returned to classical label-behemoth Deutsche Grammophon (her usual) for an official album of interpretations of J.S. Bach's violin concertos, in collaboration with Jeffery Kahane and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The much-celebrated fiddler laid down a stunning, full rendition of the concertos, all recorded at the Colburn School Of Performing Arts and which added to her huge repertoire. This stealth reissue from the classical music giant bolsters Hahn's rep once more.

Review: Denovali presents the second cooperation album by Italian composer, arranger, producer and guitarist Eraldo Bernocchi, in collaboration with Berlin-based Japanese violinist, composer, electronic producer and Tangerine Dream member Hoshiko Yamane. Bernocchi and Yamane have come together here for the second time after finding inspiration in the Japanese concept of "sabi" - an aesthetic that celebrates the beauty of impermanence and decay. It is often associated with the simplicity, austerity, and solitude found in nature, and is said to evoke a sense of melancholy, nostalgia, and reverence for the passage of time. The record, to match, is a unique blend of electronic and acoustic music, with Bernocchi's pulsating textures and Yamane's haunting treated violin melodies weaving together to create a captivating and emotional sonic landscape.

Review: Fraud's third full-length of 2024 is another example to his unparalleled consistency in street rap. Partnering with producer Harry Fraud, the album marries Fraud's dynamic, loop-based production with Boldy's gritty, introspective lyricism. Fresh off the success of the The Alchemist and Nicholas Craven, The Bricktionary solidifies Boldy's legacy as a steady force in hip-hop, crafting vivid, haunting street tales with every verse. Fraud's production is a perfect match for Boldy's style, blending chipmunk soul, trap beats and atmospheric soul samples to create a backdrop that's both complex and accessible. Tracks like 'Shadowboxing' show Boldy's lyrical dexterity over airy, 1980s-inspired loops, while 'Speedy Gonzales' pulses with a bouncy drumbeat, driving the track forward with intensity. Guest features like Tee Grizzley on 'Cecil Fielder' and Benny the Butcher on 'Rabies' add flair to the album, but it's Boldy's nuanced storytelling that shines throughout. On tracks like 'Harvey Grant' and 'Fish Grease', Boldy reflects on his journey, blending the mundane with the profound as he recounts struggles and triumphs with masterful clarity. The Bricktionary proves that Boldy James, alongside Harry Fraud, remains a force in the game, offering yet another standout project in a year already brimming with stellar releases.

Review: New York emcee Hassaan Mackey (Rawkus 50) delivers sharp, unfiltered lyricism, packing rhymes with onomatopoeia and raw street wisdom. Set to blackout beats by Detroit producer Apollo Brown (The Reset, Brown Study, Gas Mask, Clouds), we've the ideal backdrop here: deep bass set to the the crackle of well-worn vinyl. The result is a record on which we're given much more than our Daily Bread. Lyrical picturebooks of faded spirit photographs return like plasmic ghosts, each booing line steeped in a mood of eerie reckoning. Atonement lingers in every note, experience weighs heavy, yet a fierce hope burns through.

Review: To mark Anton Bruckner's bicentenary in 2024, Deutsche Grammophon releases a limited and numbered audiophile vinyl edition of Herbert von Karajan's famous recordings of the complete symphony cycle with the Berliner Philharmoniker, on 17 LPs. All recordings have been newly mastered and mixed by Rainer Maillard and Sidney C. Meyer from Emil Berliner Studios: Symphonies Nos. 4-7 (analogue recordings from 1975-1979), based on 8-track material were treated according to the Original Source Series standards. Symphonies Nos. 1, 2 & 3 are digital recordings from 1980 and 1981 and have also been newly mastered and cut by the same team at EBS, optimizing the sound by utilising new bespoke analogue-to-digital-to-analogue conversion technologies and using a tube-based mixing console from 1960. The 17xLP set is housed in a slipcase with O-card, with eight 2xLP gatefolds (Symphonies Nos. 2- 9) and one single sleeve (Symphony No. 1) presented in a sleeve (1 LP), with artwork based on the respective original releases including liner notes and with additional material including recording documentation and photos.

Review: The Moon and the Melodies, a collaboration between Cocteau Twins and ambient pioneer Harold Budd, stands as a unique gem in both artists' discographies. Originally released in 1986, this ethereal album is now being reissued on vinyl, remastered from the original tapes by Robin Guthrie. Unlike anything else the Cocteau Twins ever produced, this record blends their dreamlike soundscapes with Budd's serene, improvisational piano work. The result is an atmospheric journey, at once intimate and expansive. Tracks like 'Sea, Swallow Me' shine with Elizabeth Fraser's otherworldly vocals, intertwined with Guthrie's shimmering guitar and Raymonde's grounding bass, creating a sound that feels both familiar and entirely unique. Instrumentals like 'Memory Gongs' and 'The Ghost Has No Home' highlight Budd's delicate piano, enhanced by the band's signature ambient textures. The album is a study in contrasts, vocal tracks sit alongside instrumentals, each contributing to a cohesive yet diverse listening experience. For fans, this reissue is a chance to revisit a pivotal moment in the evolution of dream pop and ambient music. The album's enduring appeal is evident in its continued influence in social media. The Moon and the Melodies remains a shining light that can happen when artists from different realms come together to create something truly timeless.

Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe returned here to bring the unique sounds that made Volume I a Latin music classic. For this one, Colon and Lavoe were joined by renowned cuatro player Yomo Toro and legendary percussionists Milton Cardona and Jose Mangual Jr. Together, they crafted salsa versions of beloved Puerto Rican Christmas songs while mixing traditional musica jibara with Cuban guaguanco, son montuno and African-American jazz. It delivers on all fronts with vibrant, festive blends that bring real Puerto Rican authenticity to salsa fans worldwide.

Beatrice Dillon - "Basho" (20:43)
Hideki Umezawa - "Still Forms" (17:11)
Review: Portraits GRM offer a split release between Beatrice Dillon and Hideki Umezawa, riffing on 'basho' and Baschet respectively. Dillon's 'Basho' is shaped on the mortar of a Japanese philosophical concept: conceived by Japanese philosopher Kitaro Nishida, basho describes a post-physical plane in which experiences and thoughts interconnect, dissolving subject-object distinctions. Dillon and Umezawa's music both resist fixity, reactivating the listener's attention by way electronic sounds stripped of origin. Umezawa's 'Still Forms', however, contrasts Dillon's firm-footed techno curtails with an entirely beatless piece, exploring the sonic potential of Baschet sound structures: experimental instruments developed in the 1950s by Bernard and Francois Baschet. Electroacoustic cognitions branch out like newly grown synapses on this fresh 12".

Review: Together Again!!!! reunites trumpeter Howard McGhee and saxophonist Teddy Edwards in a jazz collaboration originally released in 1961 that is as energised and electric as the title with all its many exclamation marks. This reissue is part of the Acoustic Sounds Series and showcases the exceptional talents of McGhee and Edwards alongside Phineas Newborn Jr. on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Ed Thigpen on drums. It has been cut from the original master tapes by Bernie Grundman so the AAA lacquers enhance the album's rich sound. It's a mini-classic of the jazz world and it never sounded better.

Review: Now here's a rarity for you. Not even many of the most committed megafans know that Brian Eno, Holger Czukay and J.Peter Schwalm, accompanied by Raoul Walton and Jern Atai, performed a secret live music show, outside the esteemed Kunst-und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, situated in the city of Bonn, in August 1998. Forming a part of the opening party of Eno's Future Light-Lounge Proposal multimedia installation, this furtively-recorded album hears an exclusive slice of incidental "high-altitude food music", of course made during Brian Eno's airborne ambient era. Now reissued via Gronland, this five-piece cut of sophisti-ambi-krauttronica makes for a welcome surprise.

Hans Kjorstad is the third and final part of this three-way collaboration and is a musician and composer who specialises in contemporary microtonal music while drawing inspiration from Norwegian traditional music and experimental improvisation. Together, their unique approaches push the boundaries of modern music as they weave traditional and avant-garde elements into a rich tapestry of sound that bridges genres and challenges conventions.

Review: Occupying a wildly cosmic position alongside artists such as Space Lady, Bruce Haack - AKA The Captain- is a bonafide Canadian electronic music legend, albeit a name that often goes unsung, or at least under-referenced, in conversations about groundbreaking synthesised sounds. Born in 1931, and active since the mid-1950s, his is a story we cannot even come close to doing justice here, touching upon indigenous pow-pow rituals, peyote, time studying at New York's Juilliard School, and an approach to making music that rejected any kind of restriction in favour of open exploration. The latter certainly rings true on Captain Entropy, a record that seems to have one foot in the formative days of rock & roll, and another tethered to some one-man spaceship, freewheeling through the universe on a mission to develop new ideas into tangible things people can listen to.

Review: The fourth full-length from Mexico's post-metal-tinged melodic crust-punks Habak follows on from two previous collaborative efforts with also Tijuana-based post-rockers Fractal and Los Angeles crust-punk outfit Lagrimas, marking their first sole studio full-length since 2020's Ningun Muro Consiguio Jamas Contener la Primavera. Expanding their diverse, abrasive sonic palette more than ever before, drawing on elements of late 90s "skramz" era screamo, blackened hardcore and shoegazing post-rock, yet all coalesced under the black breath of their obligatory crust-punk sound, Mil Orquiideas en Medio del Desierto illustrates a band reaching the peak of their prowess and potential while offering a unique perspective on all of the above mentioned subgenres, with just that tincture of Mexican folklore for that added, incomparable aura.

The group has roots in the south of the Czech Republic where, we're told, outsiders and creatives have been meeting at a summer school since the 1990s. It was in the summer of 2022 that this group came together, inspired by the idea of exchanging the down cultural and musical ideas through music. They first started out with a series of multidisciplinary workshops which then blossomed into this full length - a fusion of jazz, ambient, world music and experimentation that is organic and enriching.

Now, 15 years into their career, the nine-piece collective prepares to unveil their sixth album, Collaborations: Volume Two. The duo performs works by American composers spanning the 19th to 21st centuries and in doing so blends diverse influences such as European Romanticism, revivalist hymns, blues, jazz, and bluegrass. The album features pieces by Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Charles Ives, John Adams, Amy Beach, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson and others, all of whom highlight the rich tapestry of American music. Hadelich, who moved to the U.S. at 19 and became a citizen in 2014, combines American passion with European nuance in his acclaimed performances.

Hawes' performance on the Ornette-penned 'Turnaround' stands out as a straight-ahead highlight on this exploratory album, although the other three are also standout works that offer plenty to get stuck into. Review: Repeatedly mispronounced Los Angelean sister act Haim return with 'Something To Tell You', an upbeat and optimistic tale of making amends to a lost love, moving forward and letting go. The trio channel a Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac style of love song into a modern pop context that sounds as fresh as it does respectful to their influences. Furthermore, building on 2013's critically acclaimed 'Days Are Gone', their sophomore set proves that Haim's prowess as high calibre songwriters, vocalists and multi-instrumentalists continues to demand respect.

Review: The mega successful debut album from indie-pop sister trio HAIM celebrates its ten year anniversary this year with this deluxe reissue. Featuring hit singles such as 'Falling', 'The Wire', and 'If I Could Change Your Mind', as well as a batch of funky remixes from the likes of Cyril Hahn and Giorgio Moroder, this 2xLP is the ultimate edition for fans of the Los Angeles sisters, who've gone on to collaborate with the likes of Vampire Weekend and star in Paul Thomas Anderson films in the decade since. Days Are Gone was one of those albums that was seemingly everywhere in 2013, and the staying power of these Californian soft-rock tinged pop bangers has aged like the snifters offered at a San Fernando Valley wine country tasting.

Review: Ensemble Modern and experimental, Berlin-based music composer and sound artist Hainbach come together for Primer, an album sourced from their 2022 Checkpoint concert and reworked in the studio with bassist Paul Cannon. The record transforms their fine live performance into a rich, immersive home listening experience with Hainbach's signature use of nuclear research gear, tape loops and vintage electronics weaving haunting, ever-shifting textures throughout. As such the pieces pulse with a sonic spark that captures the spirit of experimentation and collaboration and is taps into plenty of avant-garde thinking in its approach to drone and ambient.

]Nathan Haines, the renowned New Zealand musician, unveils his 11th studio album, marking his first solo venture since 2014. Known for his talents of saxophone, flute, and composition across jazz, electronic and dance genres, Haines melds his signature jazz sound with vibrant electronic and disco influences on Notes. This labor of love began years ago in collaboration with the late UK producer Phil Asher, whose influence permeates the album despite his passing during its creation. Featuring guest vocalists like UK soul-diva Vanessa Freeman and emerging talents Ajuna Oakes, Ruby Cesan, La Coco, and EO, Notes showcases a diverse range of voices intertwined with Haines's own instrumental strength. With contributions from bassist Jkriv and electronic jazz innovator Mark de Clive-Lowe, alongside beats by Marc Mac and acoustic bass by his father Kevin, the album is full of spirit and musical evolution. Frank Booker's production on three tracks adds depth, while the acoustic rendition of Rare Silk's 'Storm,' featuring vocalist Rachel Clarke, stands out as a poignant artistic highlight.

Review: Hak Baker's debut album is a socially and politically charged one, that represents the war in his own mind as well as "the culture war on the streets of London and the individual battles of his community." The sound is a spin on mid-00s indie with cheeky chappy vibes and scruffy pop hooks. Earnest cuts like 'Bricks In The Wall' and 'Run' sit with more angsty cuts like 'DOOLALLY (Unreleased)'. Baker has made waves in the last year with sets at Glastonbury, on Jools Holland and BBC's new Eastbank site. The year ahead brings UK and Germany tours and no doubt many more fans off the back of this record.

Review: Soweto to Harlem highlights a unique moment in musical history, where the paths of American jazz legend Hal Singer and South African saxophonist Kippie Moeketsi intersected. Produced by Rashid Vally in 1976, this album stands as a testament to the power of collaboration across borders. The title track, inspired by Singer's journey from Soweto to Harlem, sets the tone for the entire recording, blending elements of rhythm and blues with a laid-back yet cheeky vibe. Singer's quartet delivers a nostalgic and soulful performance, with each track exuding a sense of camaraderie and musical excellence. While initially only available in South Africa, Soweto to Harlem now serves as a cherished artifact of cultural exchange and musical innovation, showcasing the enduring legacy of two jazz pioneers.

Review: In 2018, Half Alive had a dream breakthrough. Their indie pop single 'Still Feel' and the accompanying high-end choreography-heavy video earned such a buzz that it landed them a record deal with RCA, where they went on to release two albums. Now signed to Virgin, their third album sees the California band deliver a multifaceted pop record that reflects the way we have boundless access to music this century so we're increasingly unconstrained when it comes to genre. 'Bleed It Out' blends throbbing techno bass with bleeping synths and guitars twisted to sound like synths as singer Josh Taylor hits falsetto notes with aplomb. The catchiest number here is the opening cut, 'All My Love', thanks to its banging chorus. It shows the band have a real gift for uplifting daytime radio hits. Meanwhile, 'Songs' has an Andrew Bird appeal with a stunning tender vocal and 'Persona' shows their knack for pop punk, with a tight drum performance.

The original label was Johnny Palmer Entertainment but now it is Most Wanted that drop this reissue of the seminal self titled debut. It's a record that goes big on the gangsta sounds with hard hitting bars and beats and plenty of old school scratching and samples. It has aged well and though it has plenty of nostalgia it still stands up all these many years later.

Review: Wirral group Half Man Half Biscuit return with 13 tracks of clipped, deadpan commentary and characteristically sharp titles. 'Horror Clowns Are Dickheads' sets the tone early i jagged, unglamorous, and unbothered with polish. 'Goodbye Sam, Hello Samaritans' and 'Rawlplugs of Yesteryear (Breaking the States)' take similarly sideways routes through pop culture detritus and social noise. 'The Bliss of the Hereafter' and 'McCalliog and His Hens' skew slower, with more spoken delivery than structure. 'Record Store Day' lands its target without overstating the punchline. Elsewhere, 'No-One Likes A Polymath' and 'Falmouth Electrics' keep the language tight but surprisingly pointed. 'I'm Going Out of My Mind Trying to Get Into Yours' is a rare moment of emotional slippage i though only just i before the band revert to type on 'Jack's Been to the National' and 'Possible Side Effects'. Overall, they remain the only band who could deliver lines like these and still sound like they're holding something back.

Review: The sixth studio album from Half Waif aka. Nandi Rose, See You At The Maypole, hears the musician process loss, motherhood and miscarriage through 17 lissome songs of graceful, chin-up synthetics and indie spoken word. These tracks were originally intended as a departure from her earlier, darker works; the mood is timely autumnal, literally and figuratively turning new yet browned leaves; despite the electronically inflected and modern buzzing feel of 'Heartwood' and 'Ephemeral Being', all tracks were composed in a small cabin overlooking a luscious and rain-rippled pond, as part of a solo retreat in the Catskill Mountains in New York. And yet despite its singular locality, Half Waif commands a stylistic range that is unsettled as it is expansive, weaving between unseelie autotune, bracken textures and rustling melancholia.

Review: LA based Black Market Dub like to rework great artists of decades gone by through a new sound system lens. This time it is the great 80s pop duo Hall & Oates who get the treatment with six of their most well-known tunes all reworked at slower tempos, with natty guitars, horns and rolling rhythms bring a new and sunny perspective. 'Private Eyes' in particular sounds superbly laid back and sun kissed for Balearic sessions and 'Maneater' also does the business with the original vocals soaring over lazy chords and amidst oodles of echo and reverb.

Review: You can probably work out what's going on here from the title: a superb collection of reworked Hall & Oates classics inna reggae style. They are the fine work of Black Market Dub who likes to reimagine classic sounds through a 70s Jamaican lens. The techniques used throughout are superbly authentic with hissing hi-hats, lazy tumbling beats and snaking baselines. The vocals remain in their original, often polished, falsetto style and extra horns are added for a lush sunny impact. Great fun, but also great quality.

Tracks like 'When the Morning Comes' and 'Had I Known You Better Then' highlight Daryl Hall's and John Oates' songwriting ability and vocal harmonies, while 'She's Gone' stands out as a true classic with its emotive arrangement and memorable hooks. The reissue offers a fresh perspective on the album's enduring appeal, with remastered sound bringing out the nuances of the original recordings. Recorded in 1973 at Atlantic Studios with producer Arif Mardin, this album captures them during the early points of their career, blending expert songwriting, beautiful harmonies, and top-tier musicianship. The standout tracks on Side-1, such as 'When the Morning Comes' and 'She's Gone,' highlight their Philly-soul sound and sublime production. 'Abandoned Luncheonette' on Side-2 also shines with its poignant storytelling about a derelict luncheonette, inspired by the album cover photo. These deep tracks are gaining appreciation from new generations, uncovering diamonds in their discography. This album is a testament to their youthful creativity and musical brilliance, inviting us all to explore beyond the hits and discover the true essence of Hall and Oates.

Review: Detroit house hero Kyle Hall returns with his biggest project in some time in the form of Transmissions, a new double album on his own well-regarded Forget The Clock. All six tracks have enigmatic, functional titles and the music is as idiosyncratic as ever. Each one veers more towards techno than is Hall's usual style, with pulsating synth lines and tight, dusty drum tracks making for stripped-to-the-bones grooves. Later on, things grow ever more abstract with twisted acid lines screwing their way through the increasingly ragged and roughshod drums. These are perfectly imperfect jams from a master of the form.

To mark the occasion they have pulled together their first two releases - namely 2012's 'Night / Dusk' and 2013's 'Ignorant' - on one new double album that very much sums up their raw house sound. The Detroit-London duo draw on plenty of their hometown's signature aesthetics, from well swung drums to soulful synths, and the results are still fresh sounding and captivatingly deep. Importantly, all these years later, there is still real emotional punch in these tunes as well as damn good grooves. Essential stuff from this vital pair.

It was Hall's first solo record and spawned singles 'Forever J' and 'Sense', while much of the album was written with guitarist Craig Gannon and includes features with then-acclaimed musicians such as Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds. As such, there are plenty of big jangly guitars, soaring and tender vocal deliveries and post-baggy grooves that might well still get festival crowds swaying along without a care in the world.

Even so, few of his full-lengths are quite as sought after as the LP that started it all, 1975's "Christening For Listening: A Soundtrack For Every Body". Here it gets the reissue treatment, admittedly with a relatively limited pressing. The album is rich and evocative, joining the dots between new age, ambient and experimental jazz, with the seven-part A-side "Spectrum Suite" offering a slowly shifting journey that should really be listened to in its entirety. Closer "Subtle Body Suite", a moody, up-tempo dancefloor jazz number full of squally trumpet solos, is also incredible.

Restlessly prolific and drawing from a seemingly bottomless well of ideas, he approached this record as a reset of sorts, affording himself freedom to explore sound in all aspects. The end result remains true to his velvet-smooth approach, delivering understated instrumental flourishes around delicate grooves to make for the gentlest of access points for the labyrinthe halls of jazz, but as ever there's much nuance and complexity bedded into these delicate compositions to yield new discoveries over repeated listens.

Review: The Alt label hits its second record with a sterling cast of wayward techno bods in tow. Things fire up in a tough and trippy manner as Delta wrings all kinds of tricky noises out of his gear and keeps the bass brooding in the low end, but hold tight for a perfectly 90s chord progression in that pad line. Cabanelas has a bleepy mission on 'Sambu Y Los Morsas' which flits between creepy passages of tension and acid tweaking drops. Z@p keeps things melancholic while adhering to the record's over-arching old-skoool outboard vibe, and then Justin Drake and Quinn Whalley sign the record off with a slice of proto trance for the deepest of 90s-tinted dancefloor reveries.

Review: Trumpeter, bandleader and composer Matthew Halsall has established himself at the forefront of the contemporary jazz scene. In part that was down to his landmark album, An Ever Changing View, which is an expansive project blending jazz, electronica, global and spiritual jazz influences. Now reissued, the album highlights Halsall's signature meditative sound while showcasing his most experimental work yet, pushing boundaries with innovative production techniques. Composed in striking modernist settings with breathtaking views, the album captures a sense of openness and escapism and embraces a fresh start after Halsall reset his creative approach and explored sound with complete freedom to craft a deeply immersive and transformative record.

Review: Following 2014's When The World Was One, Halsall and the Gondwana collective continue their spiritual jazz adventure with another immaculate narrative. Now with much more vocal prowess, singer Josephine Oniyama plays a lead role in the story, adding consistency and personality to the Halsall's swooning, cinematic odysseys. Highlights include the Hathaway-style half spoken/half sung "Badder Weather", the frenetic double bass and brushed drum crescendos of "The Land Of", the (lark) ascending strings and oriental scales of "Cushendun" and the smoky, faraway Coltraneisms of the title track. Modern jazz doesn't get any more authentic than this.

Review: Matthew Halsall is one of a few key UK artists who helped make jazz cool again over the last decade. His magnificent trumpet skills and ability to tap into plenty of orchestral talent has resulted in plenty of vital albums on his Gondwana label and one of the best, if you ask us, is When The World Was One. It's a spiritual and joyous mix of contemporary and classic styles in the view of your Alice Coltrane types and now gets reissued across double vinyl. Whether it's soaring brass, heart-melting piano playing, soaring crescendos or more quiet and intimate moments you seek, this an essential jazz album whether you're a wisened old cat or a younger newcomer.

Review: Kicking off with recited verses from Romeo And Juliet and barely scaling the drama down from that point onward, 'Hopeless Fountain Kingdom' is a relentlessly far-reaching album from the Jersey born artist formerly known as Ashley Frangipane. Yet in a pop landscape increasingly dominated by radio-ready blandness and empty soundbites, these soul-searching and angst-ridden ditties bear genuine emotional heft to match their super-producer gloss, arriving at an arrestingly synth-driven sound more Depeche Mode than Ellie Goulding, and dissecting her trials and travails in a manner that suggests a fearless and feral talent built to last. A widescreen tour-de-force from a very 21st-century pop star.
