Club Lonely - "Shelter" (dub version)
Review: The second installment of the Universal Consciousness series on These Days sees Stephen Brown and Club Lonely go back to back for a double techno treat. Brown's Speak features some heavy kicks and delicate hollow keyboard stabs that pepper the track wonderfully and keep things nicely buzzy in a Detroit style. Club Lonely (a name given to the collaborative efforts of These Days' in-house production family) offer up Shelter on the flipside, which is a warm old-school slice of funky techno complete with a bassy organ sound that carries the whole beat along perfectly. Check out the dub version too for an ideal extended DJ tool.

Review: If you're reading this we've got to hand it to you; you really know your stuff! The Cab Drivers are Berlin's undisputed masters of quality techno and house that all the heads can count as some of their secret weapons in their records bag. The man himself Richie Hawtin even compiled a body of their work on his Plus 8 imprint in 2006, Cabinet Classics, which is testament to their illustrious discography. This release is another worthy addition to their catalogue. "Taxi Funk" is all that its infectious swirling synth stabs and syncopated rhythms. "Bon Bon" is more uplifting with its shimmering keys and mesmerising melody pushing you into a truly higher state!

Confine (11:16)
Expand (11:26)
Review: Iranian label Shahr Farang has been quietly issuing some of the most engrossing minimal, ambient and abstract records in recent memory, keeping the release rate simmering but ensuring every record is worthy of attention. Romanian champ Vlad Caia makes a welcome addition to the label, embracing his experimental side with these engrossing studies of leftfield percussion and sound design. "Confine" is a spacious excursion that rolls out interloping sequences of synthetic chimes that fall with an almost organic patter. "Expand" is similarly delicate, feeling as though it floats midway between the earth and the edge of the atmosphere with passing globules of synthesis dropping through its clouds of cyclical melody.

Review: Skudge maintain their firm grip on the title of .Sweden's best mysterious techno duo' with this throbbing remix of Cally's "Wake Oops!" on Fear Of Flying. An old school kickdrum works behind a looped up groove and hi-hats for a frankly awesome late night club jam. The B-Side contains two Cally originals: first up is the rolling disco funk undertone of "Gud Gioc", while the more introspective electronica of "Wake Oops!" will please the heads down brigade immensely.

Review: One of our favourite labels Millions Of Moments pays a fitting tribute to a true Detroit great in the dearly departed Aaron Carl. His passing late last year was a truly sad end to a glorious career and one of his finest moments in "Wallshaker" is revisited here. Massively rare upon original release back in 1997, Millions Of Moments have already reissued "Wallshaker" and it's accompanying and quite hypnotic "Midnite Dub" back in 2007 but here they go the extra mile, enlisting Sven Weismann to add his own touch to the track. Spread across the B Side, Weismann delivers a superlative remix which transforms the rattling original into a lavishly deep and dubby excursion filled with delightful orchestral flourishes. Extra special sleeve packaging and all profits going to the Carl family just add reasons to indulge in this special release. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Review: With summer fast approaching, Plus 8 keeps the southern European flavour flowing with this powerful EP from Marco Carola. "Apnea" is a sultry, Latin-influenced, percussive workout hemmed in by a tight 4/4 groove. Like a fine wine, Carola gives the track time to breath before slowly turning the screw, increasing the tension and expanding the room in a wash of metallic reverb. Simplicity is the key as each sound cuts like a knife through the warm night air.

Review: Italian producer Marco Carola gives us a peak behind the curtain of his upcoming album Play It Loud! - his first studio long player in almost a decade - with the Groove Catcher EP. Both album cuts, namely "Groove Catcher" and "The Method", are imbued with the subtle instrumentation and inherently funky rhythmic patterns that the Minus stalwart is known for. Adding an extra element of attractiveness to the 12" is the remix of the EP's title track by Poker Flat type Martin Buttrich, who teases out a spooky synth melody and adds some nice touches to the sonic landscape that marks it out as a welcome addendum to the two original cuts on offer.

Black Jack - "Futureclassic"
Mark Ambrose - "Insane"
Derek Carr - "Centrepoint"
Mark Archer - "Chuch"
Review: New label Rhythmic Science comes with a manifesto to release all shades of deep, spacey techno and this inaugural split artist release sets the tone nicely. The presence of Mark Archer should encourage many inquisitive techno minds to check this record out and those that do will feel right at home when they hear "Chuch" which is drawn from the same palette as his Nexus 21 material. However the other contributions also impress; Irish producer Derek Carr offers a meditative slice of classic Motor City Soul in "Centrepoint" that builds in sublime fashion, allowing him to show off his prowess for lush, glistening chords. Flip over and Scottish producer Black Jack presents his own homage to the Detroit techno sound with the wonderfully paced "Future Classic" whilst Mark Ambrose provides the 'slam it right into the mix' moment with his heavy pounder "Insane".

Review: Argentine techno producer Leonel Castillo made his first appearance on Yossi Anoyal's Sushitech imprint way back in 2006, when the label was still in its infancy. Here he delivers a follow-up eight years in the making. Deep, fluid, atmospheric and occasionally otherworldly, Deep Blue shows Castillo at his mesmerizing best. Each of the five tracks does a good job in showcasing his undulating and hypnotic deep techno sound, which sits somewhere between classic dub techno (see the final track for extra dubwise portions) and typically Germanic after-party fare. There's little to criticize, just a range of yearning, floor-friendly concoctions aimed squarely at DJs who like their techno deep, warm and enticing.

Review: First released in 2006, 'Ceerial Port' is the ultimate wildcard in the electro profligate Ceephax's towering discography. The seven-or-eight track album does things with the electro form that few of Mr. Jenkinson's contemporaries would dare ever indulge, were it not for this initial fatherly stamp of approval. lead reissue cut 'Acid Whorl' is the foremost case in point, hard-limiting and soft-clipping a cyclonic 'whorlwind' of pitch-whacked acid effluence. Further 8-bit playtimes come in the form of 'Acid Highway' and 'Acid Causeway', recalling the feeling of scouring the outer edges of an Atari Kart game and encountering nothing but rolling, pixelated skies; 'Tough Grugoy Acid' and 'Woodlice Acid' make up the longer wavelengths on the spectrum, stomping and echo-rimshotting to ever-weighty, yet jolly ends.

Review: Cong Burn continues to exercise one of the most promising instincts for future-minded music on this, their third release. It's surprising they haven't done more previously, considering the maturity of their curation, but either way the quality remains at an all time high here, leading in with some light and liquefied 4/4 sonics from Chekov before pirouetting into one of Duckett's illustrious abstractions around the techno blueprint. Review: Andy Meecham and Dean Meredith's Chicken Lips project seems to be one of the most enduring production partnerships in recent times. The classic bassline of their seminal "He Not In" was recently the subject of major label excavation by Defected, whilst the duo's talent for new original material has found itself a home on Southern Fried. Having debuted on the South Coast operation last year with the appropriately titled D.R.O.M.P. 12", Chicken Lips make a worthy return here on All That You Do which comes backed with some stellar remixes. The original finds Chicken Lips in full out disco form, bouncing all manner of analogue tweaks and a soaring vocal from Charmaine Baines off the rubbery groove. Both Meecham and Meredith also contribute remixes under their respective Emperor Machine and The Rhythm Oddysey aliases and its hard to choose a winner between their remixes and the accompanying effort from Joe Goddard.

The End Is Night
Review: Soniculture enters the next season with renovated artwork, concept and new musical ideas. We proudly present the debut of Chordian, the new Swedish duo formed by Elias Landberg and Johan Fotmeijer, and, surprise surprise, a remix from Paul Kalkbrenner! 'Closed Eyes' is Detroit techno at its best with the right set of synths, basslines and drum sequences, programmed to provide intense emotional experiences. Perfect for soulful environments.
Kalkbrenner's is a breathtaking remix that further raises the intensity of 'Closed Eyes'. With more 'pump' and fatter basslines it will surely colour your dreams with a nice touch of delirium. Paul also adds his own arrangements and melodies, making this version unique. The dreaming continues with 'The End is Night', a track moved by very elaborate synth sequences that develop in various forms and shapes, building up towards the peak, where emotions will again be the centre core of the whole musical experience.

Strange Things Are Afoot (Claro Intelecto remix)
Review: Connaisseur veteran Chymera presents an insight into how his forthcoming third LP Death by Misadventure might sound with lead single "Strange Things Are Afoot." Housed in a clear PVC sleeve and pressed on equally clear vinyl, this is an impressive looking 12" and the music matches the feel, with the Irish producer presenting a master class in how to build a track, as a complex array of spectral textures weave between one another atop a strident kick drum. It is the moment where the bass line emerges from the nether regions and dissipates into one glorious arpeggiated lead that grabs your senses wholly. Two men of the moment in Conforce and Claro Intelecto offer their own takes on the B Side, with the former's relentless jack hammer through brooding electro complemented by the altogether more serene dubby scraping of the latter.

Chymera are holding nothing back with the big room dynamics and imaginative content of "Under The Slip", creating a thrilling cut that moves from tense military drum rolls and synths on the brink of a breakdown to a hooky electro bassline and techy propulsion and makes the whole sound totally natural. Cinthie handles side A, serving up both the early Morning Detroit techno hypnotism of "Control" and the chunky and tactile, U.S style deep house bump of "Palm Trees in Wedding". The Willers Brothers' "Goes On and On" offers a return to the locked-in dancefloor hypnotism that marks out Cinthie's EP opener, albeit with a few more dreamy melodic elements to entice the deep house heads, before those tuneful, warm and atmospheric vibes are further explored on the skipping New Jersey vibes of closer "Don't Slip".

After the massive success of the first release on the label last year Eric Prydz decided to enlist some new fresh remixes of the biggest track on his first Mouseville release - 'Control Freak'. The A side remix by Adam Beyer and Henrik B is just sublime - they add their minimal twist to it for a thoroughly refreshing interpretation which doesn't follow any obvious clichés and on the floor of a club with a loud system just goes right off. Review: The third release from Swedish label Phorma is by far their strongest. It comes from two producers fronting a new wave of droning Italian techno. Claudio PRC and Ness deliver a meditative track for each side of the record, with the "Alchemist Of The Planet" seemingly referencing the type of language used on Giorgio Gigli's Zooloft imprint. It's music for the club; a great tension builder for warming duties or a effective tool for DJs playing extended slots where set lengths aren't an issue. "Nocturne" is much more industrial, with Claudio PRC's trademark synths making way for reverberant delays of clatter and sheet metal atmospherics.

Review: The sound of the San Francisco producer C.L.A.W.S. has come a long way since his debut "C.L.A.W.S. Theme" - rather than the booty house that made his name, this new 12" on fledgling US imprint Discaire (who impressed with their debut release from Discodromo) explores significantly deeper territory. "Cave In" as its name suggests is a cavernous affair, where thundering rhythms intertwine with a bumping bassline and muted neon synths, whilst the "Nightdubbin" version of the same track takes things in a more stripped back jackin' direction. On the flipside "Glass Monkey" is a druggy descent into dark crevices with only the trilling of a few firefly synths to provide any illumination. As if that wasn't enough, Discaire have included a cryptic inlay sheet and free pen to help you decipher a secret message on the label itself.

Seikou (Thomas Melchior dub remix)
Review: Two years is a long time between releases, but you can forgive Lisbon's vinyl only Xquisite when their quality threshold is so very high. Romanian talent Ivel Tax cut the ribbon then, but this second release sees the label looking much closer to home throwing the spotlight on rising Portuguese producer Cleymoore. The sound Bruno 'Cleymoore' Santos achieves on "Seikou" can be likened to a hopeless romantics take on the classic Villalobos style, with those percolating textures and delightfully skipping percussive touches augmented by the most wonderful of hazy textural touches. Xquisite have sought out a fine individual to offer an alternate vision of the track in Thomas Melchior, who instils all manner of extra percussive detail into the mix with the resultant production subtly darker in tone.

On this first release on Palinoia he exercises a keen sense of control over playful elements, not least on lead track "Heuristic". The nagging lead synth may hop around the mix, but it stays locked on to a thoroughly focused undercarriage of drums and low end that suits the professional techno set. "Ipseity" is lighter in its demeanour thanks to some calming pad tones, but the strong structure of the track remains. The release rounds up with the slower thump of "Opprobrium", surmising Cloutier's attitude to the warm-up part of a serious, long-lasting DJ set.

Review: Once again a new Horizontal Ground 12" is joined on our shelves in the same week as a release from sister label Frozen Border. The eighth instalment in the sleek and mysterious techno series is helmed by Joe Cocherell, about whom we no very little apart from the fact he drums for DVA Damas, who released a tidy EP on Downwards last year. Burning late night chords give "Who Are You Where Do You Come From" a distinctly house-centric feel - an intriguing contrast to past releases that have focused on cavernous reverb-laden techno throbbers. Flip over for "Pala", whose shuffling hats, echoing percussion and freaky vocal samples lift it into the DJ Koze "Mrs Bojangles" realm of bleary-eyed brilliance. One of the best Frozen Border releases so far, without a doubt.

Much like the vibe on Thule, the music on Thule continues to channel the mood of the icy tundra into refined, modern club tracks, but there's definitely a more sinister intent at work in these tracks from Cold. "Aerials" is a nightmarish chugger loaded with eerie sonics, while "Phased Out" lays down some fine dubby processing over a bed of chilly chord pulses. "Exiles" is a standout track thanks to its crafty groove, coming on a little more housey than its counterparts but still heavier than the average Thule jam.

Review: Thule Records has been doing a sterling job of reviving the niche scene of Icelandic minimal techno they started back in the 90s, and one of those names they're bringing back into focus is Cold. Following last year's appearance on the Exiles EP, he's returning to the main label with a new batch of appropriately chilling excursions into dub techno and minimalism. "Natures Call" actually sports an acid line coursing through the centre, but it's kept firmly within bounds amidst the slender beats and icy pads, while "Fractal Memory" fully plunges into the sub zero depths of spring reverb decays and space echo delays. "Dub Safari" is the hit here though, sporting a subtle housey groove that plays off the dubby textures perfectly.

Review: Whilst the first Re: Call To Mind vinyl sampler was very much a post dubstep affair with D Bridge, A Made Up Sound, Pangaea and Instra:mental, Metalheadz gather up the finest house and techno reworks from the heavyweight Commix remix album. Across two suitably weighty slabs of vinyl your senses are treated to the superlative reworks from Dettmann, Kassem Mosse, Two Armadillos and Sigha. The first twelve is kind of bossed by the suitably sludgy industrial locked groove of Dettmann's remix of "Satellite Type 2" though Sigha's treatment of "Emily's Smile" will find fans thanks to the Basic Channel groove, fizzy atmospherics and midway introduction of emotive strings. The real gold here though is Kassem Mosse's edit of "Strictly" which opens proceedings on the second platter. Mosse drops some cheeky slo mo vocal samples from Goldie's most famous moment on top of a bumping deep throb which is augmented by a scattergun rhythmic pulse which jerks between lull and piercing energy throughout. The deep house rework of "Strictly" from Two Armadillos on the flip seems a little too straight in comparison. Mosse is Boss!

Control Voltage 6
Review: This release is yet more pure analogue acid from the Control Voltage boys. They are still too lazy and old-fashioned to buy a computer so they have to make do with a bunch of battered old Roland boxes which, get this, they have to wire up and work by hand! This is limited to 350 copies, so act fast.

Review: With "Dlvext1" Convextion dives deep into dark romantic moods, bringing warm melancholic strings and his classic Detroit meets Basic Channel dub-techno sound. From the driving bass and jacking rhythms of the chord drenched "Spice Tea", keeping the listener moving on a celestial highway at light speed, to the piercing high-pass sweeps and amazing bassline in "Stiletto Caress", making your heart beat - Convextion's music embodies soul, emotion and depth.

Review: The classic song, Miranda which hasn't been available on wax in over 10 years, finally resurfaces with new mastering and a new package. This song was originally released as Untitled from the first Convextion release in history (MATRIX 1). One of the most sought after and beautifully composed works to come out of Detroit in the 90s. Played by everyone across the globe, luminaries such as Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Kenny Larkin, Carl Craig, Chain Reaction Crew, DJ Rolando, Swayzak, Mad Mike Banks, James Pennington, Felix and countless others. If you are a fan of Basic Channel or Carl Craig this release is one of the most important pieces to the puzzle that is Detroit techno!

New World (Robert Babicz remix)
Fantasia
Review: Dan Corco is a name that strikes. The alias used by the French DJ and producer Pierre Corcodan has become a trademark for melodic yet driving,
Detroit-influenced techno and tech house that hits like the first rays of sun climbing over the horizon on a fresh morning. Perfectly apt to enchant
any summery outdoor party after a wild night in a club somewhere South, the colourful sounds of Dan Corco - released on influential labels such as
Dave Angel's Rotation Records, Scandium, and Goodlife - leave a mark wherever they get played. Emotional and kicking at the same time, it is no
surprise that Dan, a very open-minded producer whose passion is to incorporate various styles in techno, fusing them with elements of other genres
and combining them freely to create his very own deep and shiny sound, gets more and more attention outside of his country. Picked up by Alex
Flatner's renowned Circle, his new ep 'New World' is ram-packed with melodic synths and leaves a positive impression which is enforced by Robert
Babicz's (also known as Rob Acid) stunning remix.

Lymph Nodes (8:24)

Heat Stroke (8:46)
Review: UK slo-mo house purveyor Cottam is back with the seventh edition of his eponymous imprint. Starting off with the woozy and deeply hypnotic groove of "Heat Stroke" (which is perfect for late night mood lighting), he then dives deep into the exotic for the atmospheric and Afro influenced "Lymph Nodes". With its epic tribal drum action it is perfect to cause some bugged out moments on the dancefloor, guaranteed! Finally on the flip is the slow burning and esoteric epic that is "Wall Of Sound" which really lives up to its name. Continuing on the Afro vibe and utilising some sweltering rhythms: this too is sure create some dancefloor drama and is perfect to drop closer to the morning hours.

We Got The Box
Rattle
Review: This new project from Richard X and Nathan Wilkins seems to call upon the wild sampling style of Art Of Noise and the box jams of Chicago and simmers them into a modern confection primed for the era-spanning tastes of Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound imprint. "We Got The Box" especially gets into your head with its unending, undecipherable vocal mantra and freaky machine tones, and it works a treat. The beats fall straight and strict while the melodic content spills out in a wonderful alien discord, making for a perfectly dystopian club rocker. "Rattle" moves with a similar purpose, although it has a stronger strain of techno running through its veins that slams down hard and focused, even with the enchanting female folk chants that infect the mix.

Nobody (9:38)
Sex Clips (4:00)
Review: Drumkid and Felix K debuted their Crackle Wizard project way back in 2010, delivering a fine 12" of abstract techno and D&B experiments on the latter's Hidden Hawaii label. This surprise return contains five voyages into minimalist dancefloor pastures. They begin with the languid electronic melodies and crackly techno rhythms of "Hunger 4 More", before successfully breaking up the beats on the bass-heavy shuffle of "The Klap". There's more ghostly electronics, heavy sub and off-kilter rhythms to be found on "Broken Legit", before they head back to early morning techno territory on "Nobody". They round off another fine E.P with the cut-up dub craziness of "Sex Clips".
