Review: Some five years after re-launching his Crayon label via a fine EP of vintage "Tracks From The Vault", original 1990s tech-house producer Mark Ambrose serves up more gems from his bulging archives. The quality threshold remains dizzyingly high throughout. Check first "Nightshift (Deeper Mix)", where gentle, alien synth lines and deep space chords tumble down over a heavy analogue bassline and locked-in beats, before turning your attention to the slamming techno beats, looped electronics and mind-mangling TB-303 motifs of "Dusty Acid". Also impressive is "Space Animals", a deliciously dubbed-out affair rich in sub bass and drifting, deep space chords.

Review: When Mark Ambrose's "Smoky Clinic EP" first appeared in record stores way back in 1997, tech-house was still a relatively new phenomenon. Ambrose's productions were in keeping with the freshly minted style's original ethos, fixing the futurism and sci-fi intent of Detroit techno to the rhythmical approach of New York and Chicago house. As this reissue proves, the record has aged well, sounding as deep, melodiously, hypnotic and far-sighted in 2018 as it did in '97. While there is one trip into tougher, slightly darker territory - see "Hocus Pocus" - it's the blissful, intergalactic melodiousness of tracks like "Starship" and dreamy opener "X-Rays" that lingers in the memory.

Makossa (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: IW 04. Rel: 09 Apr 18
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Makossa (mix 1)
  2. Makossa (mix 2)
  3. Makossa (Teakup mix)
  4. Wagamama
Review: Mark Ambrose doubles up on his appearance on Was/Is with this strident bout of deep end dwellers, kicking off in style with the charged up strut and punchy mono bass of "Makossa (mix 1)," making a point of stepping into a more peak time sound. "Makossa (mix 2)" takes things in a more bugging direction, but there's still plenty of pressure to be felt in the wriggling low end mess and nagging hi hats. The Teakup mix of "Makossa" is a devilish broken beat track, and then "Wagamama" slips in a loopy melodic hook and lets a firm but freaky slice of techno roll out underneath.
