1Dan - "Foundations"
Bittersuite - "Squeeze In"
Miles Sagnia - "Can We Heal Them?"
Review: Atmospheric Existence Recordings keep up their annual release rate with label boss Miles Sagnia inviting 1Dan and Bittersuite to join him on only the third release. Newcomer 1Dan opens proceedings with the sprawling soft machine funk flex of "Foundations", a track driven by gutter deep bass movements, steppy syncopation and rich sonic textures that no doubt helped influence the title of the EP. On the flip Bittersuite step forward with the upwards acid dub pressure of "Squeeze In" which steadily accrues an acidic overtone before a delightful left turn into a futuristic mechano soul rhythmic thrust. It's left to Sagnia to provide the final moment with the tightly relentless throb of "Can We Heal Them" that slowly reveals its inner acid brilliance.

Canto Della Liberta (Stefan Goldmann remix)
Review: Coming out with some tight new remixes from Trevor Jackson and Stefan Goldmann, 3rd Face returns with the chanting mayhem that has been embraced by nations apart. Trevor takes this gem and turns it into a gurgling acid reflux by distorting the Italian vocals and ripping the bass with a sonic booming kick. Inject 303ish acid lines and you have it! S.G. takes this one and adds a hyper melodic arpeggio'd synth line and some hard hitting drums with less of the vocal. Making this one easier to digest if you can't handle the vocal.

Review: Re-issue to tie into the release of A Guy Called Gerald's new album release "Proto Acid - The Berlin Sessions" (on Laboratory Instinct Records) Sugoi was the earlier of the two imprints that A Guy Called Gerald set up almost exactly a year ago. This particular label was set up to cater for more leftfield inclinations, with a house tempo and everything from dub to breaks to techno thrown into the mix, with Gerald's usual panache for stylistic innovation.

Without Time (Nail remix)
Review: Christian Viers is fast becoming a prominent name on UK underground house and techno circuits, either as part of Lazlo Dancehall alongside Leon Vynehall or his long running A1 Bassline project. Techno-focused releases on his own label, Source Unknown captured the attention of the ears behind the newly formed FINA White resulting in the Bad Timing EP, which the label state is a "strikingly clear indication of the distinctive direction" they plan to take moving forward. Title track "Bad Timing" is a straight up techno banger whose menacingly melodic low-end tones, relentless thump and rolling toms are the driving force behind its robust and looming groove. "Without Time" is a similarly complex percussive cut, but with its jungle inspired Arabic horns, trancey synth-lead breakdowns and acid squelches, whilst UK house veteran Nail offers a more direct 4/4 take on the track with his typically classy remix.

Voodoo Posse Chronic Illusion
Floating In Ecstasy
Silver Cloud Dream Come True
Review: There's something heart warming about the faulty connection glitches and dusty electronics of a Darren Cunningham production. "Voodoo Posse Chronic Illusion" from the Silver Clouds EP is one such example. Noises which would normally sound out of place sit ever-eloquently between plucked harps strings, reverberating bells and wood block percussion. At first "Floating In Ecstasy" is a little confusing - is it whether 33rpm or 45rpm? Pitched down it sounds like something that could soundtrack a scene of a staggering ghoul bearing down on a cornered victim, while pitched up it sounds somewhere between 80s EBM and electronic gothic rock. "Silver Cloud Dream Come True" however is definitely meant for 45rpm play with a drum pattern that jitters intermittently between varied glockenspiel chimes.

He is widely-accepted as one of the best producers and engineers ever to come from the techno scene and has produced countless techno masterpieces for most top labels over the last 12 years. Review: Fresh from the label's second release 'Robot Romance', supported by the likes of Laurent Garnier, Fred P, Jane Fitz, Jennifer Cardini, Rossko and more. David Agrella returns via his spaced-out house EP 'Freedom Unfolding'. Remixes are delivered by London favourite N-Gynn (Pleasure Club) known for drawing on left-field, ravey sounds and esteemed German live techno act and Muller Records/Acid Orange boss Beroshima.
Elastic basslines and tumbling percussion unfasten the A-Side with 'Walking Loud' as sinister synths convulse around the beat before N-Gynn provides a frisky reshape with sharp snares, golden keys and subtle, loopy vocal samples on a chuggier tip. The eclectic experience continues on the B-Side with title track 'Freedom Unfolding' as swinging basslines carry dream-like pads and fluttering samples, while Beroshima's acid-infused, broken beat rework provides an anthemic finale to the release.

Gravure/Continuum (Fis Hayfield To New Mills version) (7:01)
Gravure/Continuum (Regis Whip Hand mix) (6:08)
Review: This 12" sees the welcome vinyl edition of remixes of Akkord's "Gravure/Continuum" from Fis and Regis which originally appeared on a CD issued through Fabric's Houndstooth label earlier this year. With the Mancunian duo possessing such a clinical take on rhythmic construction; it's always interesting to see how artists commissioned to remix Akkord choose to approach the task. Sometime Tri Angle artist Fis is on impeccable form twisting the track into paganistic string-laden ambience on his self-styled 'Hayfield To New Mills' version which brings to mind "Hashshashin Chant" era Demdike Stare. Downwards boss Regis goes for gravelly broken techno on his 'Whip Hand' mix though he channels similar levels of spectral foreboding to Fis in the underlying human groans set deep in the mix.

Review: To complement Erol Alkan's long overdue induction in the Fabric mix hall of fame, the London clubbing institution have pressed up this 10" featuring a rare original production from the Phantasy Sound boss backed with a early 90s rarity from Uwe Schmidt. Within the context of the mix the B Side precedes the A Side, but given how special an Erol Alkan original is, it's no surprise "Sub Conscious" is presented as the main draw here. Undoubtedly inspired by originators such as Hardfloor and Phuture, the acid soaked "Sub Conscious" still has a certain cosmic edge to it, whilst Phreak's "Acid On" sounds just as vital now despite the fact Schmidt originally recorded it some 23 years ago!

Review: Milanese techno outpost M_Rec continue to flex hard in 2014, with their seventh 12" release so far this introducing the talents of US newcomer Allen. Some four tracks deep, the Gravity Assist 12" suggests Chris Allen is keenly attuned to the future glancing sounds that characterised much of techno's first wave and now to translate that approach in a manner that will appeal to the modern techno selectors and collectors. In the case of the opening title track, it's the laser like bassline that pulses with kinetic energy with Allen wisely keeping the rhythmic elements to a minimum. The subsequent "EM26" is reminiscent of Something In The Sky era Mills, whilst "MH370" pairs morse code style bleeps with trimmed drum textures. Final track "Kepler" sees Allen unleash something approaching a brooding techno monster to round out a confident debut from this newcomer.

Review: While he may have been operating in the underground for some time, Darren Allen's music is only just coming to light through his own Underlying Form label now. There's a range of styles on offer across this EP, kicking off with the subtle pulse of "Feel" before moving on to a distinctly French-flavoured micro house groove on "Inmost Cave" that wouldn't sound out of place on Telegraph Records. On the B side, "Routine Kills Inspiration" switches the mood up with a rougher sound palette, even if the arrangement is still a minimally-minded affair. Then it's left to Vid Vai to drop a complex reworking of "MD Habitat" loaded with intricate textures.

Review: A brand new label, and two new artists introduced to the world. Three of the four tracks on here are from Chris Allsopp, and combine crisp and classic contemporary techno beats with Detroit-style chord washes and stabs. Simon Owen contributes one track to this vinyl, and obviously takes more of a cue from early Aphex Twin, with a blippy, slightly industrial affair reminiscent of Mr. James's mid-90s output. Will inevitably find its way into the boxes of DJs looking for a more underground alternative to the mainstream European techno sound.

Rant Check (parts 1 & 2)
Review: After rip-roaring their way into recorded existence with their first EP for R&S, Appleblim and Second Storey are back in the saddle with the second in their trilogy of EPs, and once again the psychedelic and starry-eyed electro of their live sets has been distilled into diverse and surprising configurations. "Formation" takes a softer approach than some of their other output, bathed as it is in sweet and aquatic ripples of melody before dipping down into a spangled twist on deep house. "Rant Check (parts 1 & 2)" meanwhile flexes much more muscular tones, whipping up the kind of flexible basslines and visceral sound design that burst out of the first EP before mutating gloriously over a twelve minute run.

Review: The Demos EP sees the consistently impressive Going Good label follow killer 12"s from Moon B and Aquarian Foundation with a record from the anonymous Anom Vitruv, a producer whose combination of ambient tones and acidic, dubby techno comes with previous form on Taberbacle and Offseason. The Demos EP was originally released as a run of 50 cassettes on the Cleveland-based Tusco/Embassy Press label. The opportunity to bask in its hypnotic approach to techno should not be missed; across seven tracks it covers the kind of swirling beat haze of artists like Ital, the decayed ambient tones of Boards Of Canada, dubbed out acid and even fluttering electro-like rhythms. It may veer stylistically from genre to genre but it never does so without losing the charming nature of the producer's deep sound. Don't sleep!

Review: Ant is one of the primary DJs and producers for the Stay Up Forever Collective. He has been DJing nationally and internationally since 1994 and leaving his mark on vinyl since 1997. He established a name early on in London's free party scene by playing on the never forgotten Immersion, Jiba and Virus Sound Systems. Since then, Ant has continued making a name for himself throughout the UK as well as in countries such as Brazil, Venezuela, South Africa, Poland, Bulgaria, Ireland, Holland, France, USA, Canada, Czech Republic, Spain, Israel and Japan. From the knowledge gained as the in-house engineer for Kinetec Studios for over 4 years, he furthered his producing career by building a new independent studio in London's Docklands which is where he continues to produce music today mostly on his own Powertools label working with a variety of like-minded people right through from techno and hardcore's Lenny Dee to hard-dance's Andy Farley, not forgetting to mention all the regular London techno team-mates, namely the Liberators and Dave The Drummer. Ant has also worked on projects outside of the techno spectrum, creating music for video and TV for the likes of MTV Europe and Sony, as well as recording under pseudonyms such as the dance chart-topping, "Stratosphere".

Review: Apparat's induction into the DJ-Kicks Hall Of Fame proved to be an engaging and at times hauntingly brilliant listen that was not stunted in any way by Sascha Ring's inexperience in the art of mixing two tracks together. The requisite vinyl sampler to accompany the mix allows your senses to fully appreciate the tracks produced especially for the mix by Ring himself and his buddy Telefon Tel Aviv. "Sayulita" is named in homage to the Mexican town Ring called home during the track's inception and removed from the mix the plaintive atmospherics really impress, combined with the organic Hebden-esque percussive 130bpm shuffle. The flipside commences with "Lengthening Shadows", an equally wistful sojourn through electronica from the aforementioned Telefon Tel Aviv that opts to meld the brooding ethereal atmospherics with an almighty industrial half step kick. Apparat's opening gambit from the DJ-Kicks mix, "Circles" rounds things off in equally spooky fashion.

Review: 20/20 Vision present the debut release from Manchester based artists Armec. Following releases for Cultivated Electronics and Furthur Electronix, the Caged EP hits the ground running - with a record that spans heavy club-ready electro and futuristic soundscapes. Complete with a hefty remix from German acid connoisseurs Hardfloor.

'Caged' sucks us down the rabbit hole with dense textures fortified by an infectious groove, vast pads, and bubbling synth lines. The Hardfloor remix of 'Caged' submerges us into an acidic electro trip - fuelled by quirky melodic licks, a menacing low-end and body shaking drums.

On the flip side 'Curvature' is an out-and-out understated bomb. Propelled by a squelching, supercharged bassline which soars over Armec's signature textural landscape, it's reinforced by razor sharp hats and a heavy kick-drum. 'Replicants' is a side-winding, emotionally charged cut that feels truly fresh and forward-thinking. Deep, luscious pads are underpinned by a superbly engineered break-beat driven groove.

Paprika
Review: Amsterdam-based new talent Mark August drops his 1st EP (not the last) on the new French's Mezzotinto label! 8 years ago, Mark August discovered quality dance music through some friends of his. This also was the time he had some spare money, and a friend suggested to buy an Atari and a sampler; which, if he didn't like it to much, could easily sell again without loosing to much money. In those years the fun idea became a hobby, and that hobby took over his life. The time is coming to get his music out there. His main influences are from Prince to Richie Hawtin; Steve Reich to Derrick May; Nina Simone to Theo Parrish; Jimi Hendrix to Carl Craig. "Oxytocin" is dark melodic raw track with a big tension build-up. It has a melancholic feel with a jazzy funky bass and the pitched strings and a beautiful high epic melody that comes at the break to finish it off. "Sylvia Saint" is minimalist track with a Detroit flavour, nice 3/4 bleeps and bells that swirl around and a good ol' dirty thumping bass. "Paprika" is a sweet melodic good feel tune that with some interesting little melodies and a nice break and built up gives a sweet release of joy, while the dub-bass with the deep kick just keeps on rolling.

Review: Aybee is one of those rare few that has managed to conquer a range of styles within his work from soul, techno, house and hip-hop under his many monikers. This time we see the artist team up with Miles Sagnia for two cuts each on the Eternal Radiance EP on Sagnia's Atmospheric Existence imprint. First, Aybee serves up "A Glance" which oozes with classic US house charm. Acoustic piano chords and are layered on top of a chugging bassline and electronic melody, tightly produced and melting in its warmth. "Isis" gets heavier with a more underground vibe of crashing echoes and tinny drum arrangements. Up next, Sagnia's "Journey 2 Forever" fuses multi-tracked choral chants, the impeccable sound of the Hammond and a rapid techy groove. His Visual Foci Reprise of "Journey 2 Forever" ditches the chants, instead opting for a sensual male vocal.

Dog Sweater
Review: Hessle Audio's emergence from hibernation in 2012 really has seen the label release some of the most extraordinary music of its life, and this EP from Bandshell might top the lot. Tapping into the grainy, murky sound world of the like of STL, Shed and Actress, this record explores strange rhythms constantly on the verge of breaking out into a frenzy. The title track is comprised of little more than rattling percussion and dense, fizzy bass, while "Rise 'Em" places a jungle breakbeat atop a mucky hum. On the flip, "Metzger" takes the vibe of classic dubstep and fills it with subtle melodies and clipped snares, but "Dog Sweater" is the real killer - a homage to soundsystem culture whose threadbare rhythms are the only thing to stop you being dragged into the track's viscous centre. Make no mistake, this is a serious new talent.

There's no bells and whistles with these tracks; "Swept Up" revolves around a raw breakbeat and rugged analogue one-note bassline, giving way to a wash of pulsating filtered chords and deep melody, while "Mindstorm" utilises muffled percussion and a sludgy but frenzied acid line, but there's no denying the craftsmanship on display. Not many producers can create techno that's satisfyingly deep and has industrial rhythmic tendencies, but this release positively nails it.

Review: Basic Unit are Yair Etziony (Vermont) and Shlomi Avni (DJ Sola), pioneers of the Israeli electronic music scene, and production partners since 2005. Their debut release for Fine Art, "Fedass", takes no prisoners. This is four tracks of jacking minimal techno. Remixes from Gary Beck and Pedro Cali bring out the Detroit elements from the original track and works them into a late night dancefloor frenzy.

Review: New styles from the Pretension camp, following up from the awesome EPs by Justin Maxwell and The Diskchordians. Fresh from a trip back to Chicago, 1987, Jon (Bass Kittens) & Miguel (Single Cell Orchestra) laid down a track drawing on their love of acid house. Never leaving behind the stomp of pure acid, they added modern DSP trickery to produce a track that simultaneously pays homage to their roots while looking to the future. A layer of acid-inspired vocals from Mariette Marinus & MC Silly B Chill completes the picture. Kinda like Abe Duques' 303 excursions but with more of an electro edge.

Mein Bass, Dein Bass
Review: The sound is a refreshing take on techno, with the tracks leaning heavily towards a modern minimal sound but with still enough in to pack a serious punch on the dancefloor. The first thing that strikes you is the level of production, with the A side being a driving pulsey techno floor burner with acidic riffs and a seriously groovy bassline and percussion pattern. This will surely be hammered by the likes of Richie Hawtin and Marco Carola. The flip side is a deeper minimal take, with outstanding soundscapes and dubbed out basslines for the after hours set. Simply do not ignore this, it really works.

Punch (reworked)
Review: Zenit has always been one of the front runners in terms of putting out quality harder-edged techno. Over the years there have been many groundbreaking releases from the likes of Marco Carola, Adam Beyer and Stanny Franssen. This release is again by one of the best harder techno producers of the moment - Alex Bau. This is a perfect fresh slice of how hard techno should sound. The A-side is a killer hard techno track with pulsing analogue stabs and superb crisp production. The flip side is a more stripped-down interpretation with a more minimal feel.

Best Behaviour (David Keno remix)
Review: Alex Bau is one of the best harder techno producers. His material over the last 5 years has been both energetic and groundbreaking. His material for Zenit has been particularly good and this is new release is no exception. Both tracks are different but equally effective. The A side is a driving hard edged techno cut with its pounding kick drum and sharp percussion. The track is punctuated with catchy synth riffs and stabs to great effect. The flip side is truly monstrous with its dark dirty warehouse feel and fat sub bass and string edits. Great, great record.

Review: "EP Frequencies" works bleepy minimal sequences and structures mega-mix style that is ideal for both Techno and House floors. The full-length CD release brings all the old-school flavour of 1992 back into perspective: what you once thought was ’Rave' is now Classic Detroit Techno, the sound that started the original European attack, coining the soundtrack for the most powerful youth movement ever.

Miles Then McCoy (Agaric remix)
Review: Autoreply offshoot Stuga Musik picks up where it left off with another three tracks of deadly effective, club-friendly madness. Having held a residency at Berlin's legendary Bar 25 club and recording for high calibre labels such as District of Corruption, Thema and Little Helpers, Beaner is welcomed into the Stuga family. He serves up "Miles Then McCoy", a nine minute epic that effortlessly fuses tight linear drum programming with freeform sound design and loose instrumentals that thunder along towards an exciting climax. Patrik Skoog aka Agaric is undoubtedly one of Sweden's best loved techno exports - he's responsible for the world famous We Are series not to mention the fact that his "Who Made Up The Rules" on Ovum is currently holding Groove Magazine's esteemed #1 album chart slot. Here he re-works Beaner's track into a peak time, sub-driven sweaty dancefloor bomb. Taradise completes the package with smooth deep house vibes, lush vocals and infectious piano riffs. A diverse and solid release.
