Bells (4:07)
Review: Destination Youngstown Ohio, 1973: A young troupe of musicians gain local notoriety through their on-point covers and originals. While they never make it past the local legend status, they did record one 45" on a very limited run... And here it is. "Well Good" is a slinky slab of sizzling Hammond-led funk that builds with the help of some interesting time signature switches and electrified guitar. Think Booker T crossed with Shuggie Otis. "Bells" shows the band's softer side as they lay down some slow burning, soulful harmonic heaven that's made all the more poignant by the fact that the band didn't continue recording. Fittingly, this reissue is highly limited too.

And Then We Were One
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in perfect working condition***

Expansion's latest must-check seven-inch mines Roy Ayers' 1983 album "Lots Of Love", a sparkling post-disco set that combined the vibraphonist's usual jazz-funk flavours with colourful synthesizers and genuine boogie flavours. "Everybody" on the A-side is particularly potent; a lolloping synth-boogie head-nodder rich in life-affirming synthesizer squelches, rubbery jazz-funk bass, fluid Ayers vibraphone solos and background vocals that sneakily reference "Everybody Loves The Sunshine". Flipside "And Then We Were One" is if anything even more summery in feel, with mazy synth and vibraphone motifs dancing atop a killer jazz-funk groove. It's a little more up-tempo than the A-side, but arguably a little less addictive.

Paradise Island (Revisited)
Fair Weather Friend
Review: ***B-STOCK: Tears and creasing to corner of outer sleeve, also the record has light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in excellent working condition***

You'll struggle to find many cosmic boogie/jazz-funk records rarer than Azwon's 1980 debut single, a private press gem from Florida that has long been in demand amongst collectors. Here the finest track from that double A-side seven-inch, "Paradise Island", is given the reissue treatment. It's worth picking up, not only for the swirling, spaced-out brilliance of the original version of "Paradise Island", but also the slightly bolder, Latin-tinged "Revisited" version the band re-recorded last year for this very release. The production is very similar, sound wise, meaning it's every bit as spaced out as the cut they made 40 years ago. Bonus cut "Fair Weather Friend", a dancefloor-focused jazz-funk workout recorded but not released in 1980, is also rather good.

Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come
Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come (3:39)
Try To Leave Me If You Can (4:31)
Review: The amount of ultra-rare, hard to find, essential Northern Soul classics seems to be infinite. Here comes another reissue that aims to right that wrong with an officially licensed pair of tunes from the Phase One Network that has artwork based on the original promo version. 'Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come' is brimming with soul and immediately swells your heart with its elegant strings, graceful piano chords and swirling sense of groove all lifting you off your feet. 'Try To Leave Me If You Can' is a heartbroken slow song to conjure up memories of all the loves you've lost, or maybe never had.

Madeline Bell - "That's What Friends Are For" (3:01)
Alan Parker - "That's What Friends Are For" (3:01)
Review: Out of print since 2007, Jazzman do the right thing and come through with a much-needed repress of this 7" burner from Madeline Bell and Alan Parker. "That's What Friends Are For" originates from The Voice Of Soul, the 1976 album session musician Madeline Bell recorded with veteran library musician Alan Parker for his Themes International label. The album itself remains a highly prized (and priced) rarity for collectors, but Jazzman were able to license the irresistibly catchy and soulful samba of "That's What Friends Are For" for its debut 7" appearance. Vocal up top, killer instrumental version below; if you missed out first time around, don't make the same mistake again.

Playing The Fool (4:29)
Review: Timmion is one of our favourite labels out of anywhere, let alone Finland. 'here comes another golden soul cut from the frozen north with Jonny Benavidez back in collaboration with the ever delightful grooves of Cold Diamond & Mink. The A-side is a heart melting soul ballad in the form of 'My Echo, Shadow and Me' which manages to pay homage to the classics while bringing something new. On the flip is a more dreamy and mid tempo soul sound in the Mandells'esque 'Playing The Fool' which carries you away to a better place.

Review: Brazilian electronics are back in vogue, and Tony Bizzaro might have just snaffled up said new wave's crown. All the way from 1976 comes 'Que Se Faz Da Vida', a strutting, suave, emotionally cool EP of only the most DJ-able and collected soul-funk. This reissue is, bizarrely, Bizarro's first ever.

St James Infirmary (2:26)
Review: Jazzman's Juke Box Jams series continues unabated to offer up those one-shot killers from the tangled history of jazz, R&B and soul - essential nuggets worth repeatedly popping dimes in the slot for. Here, it's the turn of Bobby Bland's "36-22-36", a heavy swinging and insanely catchy blast straight from 1962. Bland's voice is a perfect balance - cool as ice, but cracked around the edges - while the chorus line chants don't need a minute to get under your skin until you're singing along. "St James Infirmary" on the flip is a more downcast affair - one to drown your sorrows to, but certainly not the bottom of the bottle, as those hard stepping horns attest.

The Inversions - "Version" (feat Bob & Gene) (3:56)
Review: Bobby Nunn and Gene Coplin sat in a basement one night in 1971, where frustrated by their lack of the success, they put together a record expressing said frustration. Equipped with only a guitar, bass, and piano (no drums!), the two crafted an immaculate slice of soul, aptly titled "It's Not What You Know (It's Who You Know)". Fast forward 46 years, the vocal stylings and poignant lyrics are reborn, sounding as fresh today as it did when it was crafted down in that magical basement - but now accompanied by the rocksteady rhythms of The Inversions. A must for fans of dub and reggae alike, the "Version" on the flip is a delay laden masterpiece produced and arranged by Victor "Ticklah" Axelrod.

Mood For Love (feat BG) (2:32)
Let Me Down Easy (feat BG) (3:05)
Review: Straight up steamy, sweaty shake-down soul that - until now - has been rare as hen's teeth. Spotted passing hands for upwards of L500 in the past, we have two storming sides for the price of one: "Mood For Love" is a stomp happy northern soul classic loaded with all the right ingredients; big harmonies, bigger horns and a beat that won't quit. "Let Me Down Easy" didn't achieve anthem status in the same way and has since been the driver for the original pressing's high price. Stick the needle on and you'll know why; powerful Rhodes, life-affirming horns and a gutsy vocal that burns from the inside in the best possible way.

Where Do We Go From Here
Review: Taken from their last album Victim Of Love, both "Confusion" and "Where Do We Go From Here?" represent Charles and the Menahan Street Band's bright, tight funk credentials with powerful glee. The former is an unashamed funk stomper (think Sam Moore) with big psychedelic splashes on the chorus while the latter is a much slower, moodier jam where a bold guitar riff glides us into much more emotional pastures. Outstanding contemporary funk soul.
