Down In The Basement Vol 4
Abramo & Nestor - "Dig It!" (2:28)
Floyd James & The GTs - "Work That Thang" (2:50)
Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts - "Fried Fish ’n’ Collard Greens" (2:40)
The Native Yinzer - "The Hip Strip" (2:33)
Review: The fourth edition in Original Gravity's Down In The Basement series, which gathers instrumental soul and swing cuts onto worthy 7" slabs, resounding the fervent 1960s decadal gap in which mod reigned supreme. With juleps flowing and kneecaps knocking, Abramo & Nestor bring newfangled electric pianistic swing with 'Dig It!', while a twinned "hit it!" injunction is heard from Floyd James & The GTs on the reissued 'Work That Thang'; James' voice is tubed and speed-delayed to terrific effect, achieving a sprung intonation. Curtis Baker brassifies the bonanza with the lively 'Fried Fish 'n' Collard Greens', while The Native Yinzer's exiting excitation 'The Hip Strip' quilts our ears with a mnemic, down-feathery Hammond-breaks bit.

If I Could Make You Care (2:13)
Review: The latest alt-rock, shoegaze and alternative fusion band to emerge from Ireland is Cardinals (thank you kindly - we really do like to stay at the bleeding edge of things). Though this is their titular EP, it actually follows up three former releases, continuing to prove their 'rising' status. Through a set of noisy but romantic jaunts, the likes of 'Unreal' to 'Roseland' to 'If I Could Make You Care' recall of everything from theChameleons to the Smiths to Slint to Matt Molloy, making for a unique smattering of influences that nonetheless all fit well into the multiplicitious, difficult-to-fit-into indie Pandora's box of today. From folky 6/8 aubades to Pixies-esque jangle-hops, there's something here for every up-and-coming indie head.

Review: Spanish label Vampi Soul continues to bring you off-centre party starters with a global outlook, this time looking to Peruvian cumbia legend Carlos Pickling and his orchestra. Pickling's fabled organ skills take centre stage on this pair of tracks, originally published in the 1960s on MAG but never available on a 45 before now. Whether you're a seasoned cumbia digger or just someone who appreciates infectious, vibrant grooves, this is a record with universal appeal timed perfectly for the sunnier months.

Never Get Your Love Behind Me (Record Store Day RSD 2024)
Never Get Your Love Behind Me (5:39)
What My Baby Needs Now Is A Little More Lovin' (2:56)
Review: Valerie Carter, the late Southern California vocalist, is reimagined in a stunning new remake of the Faragher Brothers' 1976 classic, 'Never Get Your Love Behind Me.' This superb outing revives Carter's original 1977 vocals intended for her Columbia Records album, Wild Child. Producer Kathy Kurasch and Carter's sister Jan discovered the unreleased material and paired Carter's isolated vocals with the current Faragher Brothers band. The B-side features a new recording of James Brown's 'What My Baby Needs Now' using Carter's live 1976 performance. This single, which perfectly celebrates Carter's legacy, is available on a 7" vinyl courtesy of Record Store Day 2024.

Frogs (instrumental) (4:35)
Review: "Ushering in the week he knelt down and crushed his brother's head in with a bone / It's my great privilege to walk you home." So go the opening lines to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' summer 2024 single, 'Frogs', and the first words written for the first track on the seminal group's forthcoming album, Wild God. Tackling the first murder (of many) to take place in the pages of The Bible may not sound like the easiest thing to do convincingly in rock & roll form, but once again Cave and Co show themselves to be among the greatest living song-masters, pulling off a sweeping, soaring, and emotionally rapturing anthem that feels destined for their list of all-time greats. Epic stuff.

Review: This new series brings forth a fusion of late 60s/early 70s Funky Rock Breaks from around the world, promising dancefloor action for Hairy B-Boys and Head-Banging Breakers alike. Side-1 kicks off with 'Good Thing Going (Put It On A Record),' blending guitar riffs, big beats, rock vocals, and rap phrases to ignite any party atmosphere. On the Side-2, 'Whole Lotta Drugs!' delves into the wild world of groupies and illicit substances, featuring an obscure brassy cover of a classic rock track with added beats and samples for a backstage after-party vibe. Consolation's Test (3:36)
Review: Cindy is set to unveil their new six-track EP Swan Lake through Tough Love. While the title doesn't directly reference the famous ballet or folktale, it evokes an image that is familiar yet open to interpretation. Songwriter Karina Gill intentionally employs this concept to bridge sound and personal experience. Continuing the minimalist approach of previous releases, Swan Lake introduces some fresh elements. The instrumentation is expertly curated, with guitarist Oli Lipton and bassist Will Smith providing counterpoint melodies that complement Gill's structures. Vocal harmonies from Staizsh Rodrigues enhance Gill's delivery, while Mike Ramos's playful drumming and Stanley Martinez's intricate guitar work add further depth. Gill's songwriting encapsulates a blend of casual storytelling with unexpected twists. Themes explore everyday momentsia ride in an elevator sparks reflections on peace; the title track delves into the nature of associative thinking; and 'The Bell' captures fleeting clarity in a chaotic world. Gill acknowledges her influences as a mosaic of past sounds and current connections, creating a rich blend that is uniquely her own.

Stepping Across (Temporal Transgression mix) (7:49)
Review: "Everything is being transformed and yet nothing changes" sings Andrew Burnett on the aptly-titled 'Everything Is Moving.' It's been a fair while since we last heard from Paisley-Glasgow's jangly-indie-poppers Close Lobsters, and by all accounts their triumphant and unarguably catchy return pretty much sums up where we're at in February 2025. So much seems to be changing. And yet, when all is said and done, most of us are still going to be left in the same vulnerable position we started out in. But let's not get too bogged down in geopolitics. Better to focus on the four tracks that make up this resurgent EP. Opening on the title song, Stepping Across sets its stall out somewhere close to The Lighting Seeds, and double down on that position throughout. It's uptempo, summer-sounding stuff that doesn't shy away from exploring reflective themes. Oh, and probably worth noting the excellent, tougher and drummier 'Stepping Across (Temporal Transgression Mix)' that closes the package - arguably superior to the original.

My Echo, Shadow & Me (instrumental) (3:52)
Playing The Fool (instrumental) (3:48)
Review: Talk about being truly timeless. Chicano soul sensation Johnny Benavidez is the kind of artist who can figuratively, and spiritually, transport listeners to a golden age of Doo Wop, funk, and R&B, writing tracks and songs that glide on a smooth, easy listening cloud but still pack plenty of bite when it comes to the nitty gritty. Music to move you in many ways. Grandson of John Lorenzo Guzman (background vocalist for Sonny Powell & The Night-Dreamers), this relationship has a lot to answer for, with Pa encouraging Jr to take up singing and pursue music seriously. We're glad that happened, given My Echo Shadow & Me - a two tracker that could almost be considered retro or pastiche, if it didn't sound so damned fresh. Or at least ageless.

Simon Williams (Fierce Panda Records) - "The Story Of Brothers & Sisters" (5:45)
Review: Today marks a significant milestone as Coldplay's iconic Brothers & Sisters EP celebrates its 25th anniversary with a special edition release. Originally launched via Fierce Panda Records, the EP was pivotal in shaping the band's early sound and building their devoted fanbase. Released as a gatefold double BioVinyl 7", this commemorative edition includes the classic tracks 'Brothers & Sisters' and 'Easy To Please', alongside the addition of 'Only Superstition'. Recorded for a modest L450, the EP made its mark, climbing to number 92 on the charts. As an intriguing bonus, the anniversary release features a new track, 'The Story of Brothers & Sisters', offering a spoken word insight into Coldplay's formative years. Lifted from Simon Williams' audiobook 'Pandamonium! How Not To Run A Record Label', this excerpt vividly recounts the band's early days at iconic venues like Camden Falcon and Kentish Town Bull & Gate, where they caught the attention of Radio One's Evening Session and garnered their first NME reviews. Celebrating both Coldplay's journey and Fierce Panda's 30th anniversary, this release encapsulates a pivotal moment in music history.

Harter Film (5:23)
Review: A long-overdue revival of an underground German gem from 1984, Jurgen Grah and Markus Kammann crafted a sound that fused early new beat, synth-pop and electro with a sharp sense of groove. Collage's 'Mit Den Puppen Tanzen' resurfaces as making it a hidden treasure for fans of forward-thinking dance music. The title track is a sleek blend of disco and electro, layering pulsating synths over a club-ready rhythm that still feels ahead of its time. 'Schwarze Nacht' twists post-disco elements into something funkier, reinterpreting familiar grooves with fresh energy. 'Harter Film' leans further into an edgy new wave sound, its electro beat driving a tense yet undeniably danceable atmosphere. Balancing underground cool with accessible hooks, this is a record that effortlessly bridged electronic experimentation and dancefloor appeal. A vital listen for those who appreciate the history of an exciting time between post-disco, house music and the 80s new wave sound.

Dreams Of A Working Girl (2:59)
Review: Comet Gain, a British indie pop band formed in 1992, have been crafting their distinctive sound for over three decades. Led by singer-songwriter and guitarist David Christian (aka David Feck/Charlie Damage) and Phil Sutton, their music draws from post-punk and Northern Soul influences. Starting with homemade cassette demos, Comet Gain's releases have spanned labels like Wiiija Records, Fortuna Pop! and Tapete Records. Despite numerous lineup changes, David Christian has remained the constant force behind the band. Early gigs saw them supporting acts like Stereolab, Television Personalities, Bikini Kill and Heavenly, and they also recorded several Peel Sessions, touting a musical style ranging from soul-influenced indie pop to early-80s alternative pop and punk. This 7" record features two tracks recorded in the Spring/Summer of 1996. Side A's 'Only Happy When I'm Sad' and Side B's 'Dreams Of A Working Girl,' appearing on vinyl for the first time, originally debuted on the NME C96 compilation CD.

Review: The Scepters, formed in 1967 in Paraiso by guitarist Celso Spencer, were a popular Panamanian band known for their energetic performances across military bases and high school dances in the Canal Zone. Alongside Lionel Best and Jose James, they covered Top 40 hits and iconic rock bands like Santana and Jimi Hendrix. They released two 45s, including 'Message,' which debuted at Panama's first National Soul Music Festival in 1971 and features next here to a jam from Conjunto Raza, another project led by Agustin Leiro, this one with rotating musicians. Review: Discodelic comes correct again with a new 7" that features a pair of rather lesser-known and brilliantly obscure Latin psych-rock gems. Conjunto Raza' 'African Dream' is all crackly and immediately nostalgic because of it, with noodle acoustic guitar sounds making way for a more upbeat and driving 60s garage rock sound but all in loveable lo-fi. Add in a red-hot vocal and you have a flame cut full of funk. On the reverse, The Scepters 'Message' is another well-aged jam that brings rawness and emotion in equal measure.

Originally released in 1975, its iconic drums have been sampled over 100 times, including by ATCQ and Biggie, with Black Moon's How Many MC's featuring the famous bass hook. Review: The 21st Century is riddled with new ghosts, according to this somewhat surprise comeback EP from pop rock veterans, The Copyrights. A four tracker that runs headfirst into themes of relationships collapsing and our inability to truly leave them in the past thanks to the hyper connectivity of our digitised world, the idea is simple - with each passing day we deal with a new haunting. Music, however, can be our salvation. Creative expression, artistic declarations and explorations of emotions we may not always know what to do with until we properly look at the options. On 'New Ghosts', the band go for a main stage guitar sound that nods to pop punk and then dives headfirst into stadium indie, catharsis on on the scale of anthems.

The EP's first single, 'Mind Train,' is an epic nine-minute track inspired by Yoko Ono which blends ethereal space-pop with minimalist structures and bursts of exhilarating chaos. Run Run Runaway (3:31)
Review: "The world's greatest two person rock 'n' roll ensemble, the next big thing - out now!" You can hear the delicious wit and parody in the copy sitting on The Courettes website, a band that have managed to do the unthinkable, swerving all trends to come up with music that simultaneously sounds self-aware in its retro nostalgia, yet incredibly fresh. Hailing from Denmark and Brazil - another curveball in many ways, California, which welcomes the additional vocals of La La Brookes, is a case in point. Jangly yet snarling garage rock, seductive art pop aimed at the charts, beach guitar stuff that supplants realism and experimentation for the doe-eyed dreaminess of, err, beach guitar stuff. Original as ever, it's more evidence that these guys may well be on the money with that description of themselves.

Harvey Mandel - "Baby Batter" (3:40)
Review: Climactic, psychedelic soul and blues brilliance by Don Covay, co-written by Donny Hathaway and backed by a proto-Balearic sweetmeat on the B, Harvey Mandel's 'Baby Batter'. The A-side was originally released one year after (1972) the B-side (1971) on the American Janus label, and the tracks provide a palpable contrast, drawing on the same idiom yet approaching it with remarkable difference. Covay's lyrics are, thematically, overflowing with determination, despite the psychic conflict at the track's heart. Is there any resolution? Review: You know what to expect from The Cramps - punk, rockabilly and garage rock colliding in a gloriously sleazy pile up of distorted twang and deviant attitude. The A-side is a trademark take on those late 50s/early 60s tunes dedicated to the twist dance craze, enough said. It comes backed with the garage-powered 'Confessions of a Psycho Cat' and the more pscyhobilly-slanted, thoroughly howling 'No Club Lone Wolf'. Capturing a raw energy that channels the rebellious spirit of classic rock & roll with gritty guitar riffs, infectious rhythms and an undeniable sense of fun, this is a standout late-career highlight.

Review: A pair of Cure singles, one a classic from the 80s and the other more of a deep cut from the 1996 album Wild Mood Swings, caught here in the live arena on turned into two sides of a rather nifty 7" picture disc. 'The Walk' is one of the Crawley crew's most electronic moments, a Japanese-slanted retort to New Order's huge 'Blue Monday' single a more cynical observer might be moved to admit. It's immediately nevertheless one to transport you back to the lazer-peppered, smoke machine-swathed dancefloors of the era, with its concluding line "I remember everything" seeming particularly apt in hindsight. 'Mint Car', while less well known than many other Cure 45s, was nevertheless one of Robert Smiths' favourites. He, apparently, couldn't fathom out why it only charted in the low 30s when 'Friday I'm In Love' smashed the top ten. Perhaps the outbreak of utter cheeriness - "I really don't think it gets any better than this/vanilla smile and a gorgeous strawberry kiss" - was disconcerting considering the band's pretty much unrivalled reputation as the popes of mope, but its charms are undeniable and definitely due a restrospective reappraisal.

It comes on his own already interesting young label Itez and opens with the yawning and sun-kissed sounds of 'Dried Tears' with aching vocals and glistening melodies. 'Father' is an imitated song with the deep lyrics allowed plenty of room to make their mark as gentle bongos and strings company a soothing rhythm. Aspirated, smoky vocals again take centre stage on 'Lovely Lovely' which is a reminisce of a romantic tryst and 'Contradictions' then has a more breezy feel and sunny disposition. Review: Jim Black's Houseplant sees the progressive-jazz drummer continue to refine his signature style, a fusion of jazz and rock that's as quirky as it is inventive. While not a radical shift from his previous works, this 2009 release showcases Black's distinctive approach to drumming, blending complex rhythms with sly, punchy backbeats that keep the session lively. Backed by his longtime band Alas No Axis, Black delivers a sprightly set with guitarist Hilmar Jensson, whose polytonal riffs add texture, and saxophonist Chris Speed, who brings a smoother edge to the more intense moments. Tracks like 'Malomice' highlight the band's ability to shift seamlessly between acid-rock and jazz, with Speed's saxophone weaving off-kilter melodies over Black's precise, crashing grooves. The mood softens on introspective cuts like 'Elight,' where the musicians ease into more delicate, atmospheric territory. Bassist Skuli Sverrisson provides the glue, his limber playing driving the energy throughout. Houseplant is a masterclass in balancing catchy riffs with jazz improvisation, offering an intense but melodic exploration of jazz-rock fusion.

Review: The sixth studio album from US rockers Cage The Elephant arrives after a turbulent time for the band. Deaths of loved ones, a lead singer arrested then hospitalised, and the slow mental recovery from our collective free fall during the pandemic betray just how challenging recent years have been. The remarkable part is these experiences, and the resulting emotions, have been thoughtfully distilled into Neon Pill. A record that's just as much of a rollercoaster ride, we veer between the funk-laden 'Ball & Chain', the garage-y title track, gritty romanticism of 'Float Into the Sky', and rousing, lo-fi closer, 'Over Your Shoulder'. Scarcely stopping for breath, the ideas come thick, fast, and varied - leaving us feeling like we've been on an odyssey of psyche-blues-post-punk-indie. A combination that can only really sound like Cage the Elephant.

With Cain, real name Hayden Anhedonia, having kicked off 2025 with the release of her second album; her debut, which paved the way for a massive cult following that's her into a mainstream alt-pop figure, is earning renewed attention. Sonically, this is befitting to the Sad Girl Summer movement which became a craze on social media. Think Mitski, Lana Del Rey, Phoebe Bridgers, but with more of an alternative and shoegaze undercurrent. Lyrically, Anhedonia delves into her past, growing up in a staunchly religious family - and her most iconic line of any song on the album has to go to 'American Teenager': "God loves you/but not enough to save you".

Review: The cult-classic debut album from Florida-raised singer-songwriter and producer Hayden Silas Anhedonia, who goes by the stage name Ethel Cain. The album draws on her personal experiences, including growing up homeschooled in a Southern Baptist family. She channels that it into tender, balladic indie pop that's connected with millions. Anhedonia is reportedly no longer religious and so her lyrics are more of an exploration of those themes and hold an irreverence. In heartbreaking ethereal tones, reminiscent of Lana Del Rey, she sings: "God loves you / but not enough to save you", on 'American Teenager'. The album took four years for Anhedonia to make and she claims to have made nearly every inch of it herself. This painstaking attention to detail shows in the mixes, which feel like pop but are subtly avant-garde and make you feel in the company of a true artist.

Review: Domino Records embark on an ambitious reissues double-bill of John Cale's earliest solo records. Here - third to his debut record after his self-excision from the Velvet Underground, Vintage Violence (1970) (to which Cale was infamously disparaging in his later years, deriding his performance on the work as "masked" behind a disingenuous imperative to prove he could still write songs) and second to his Academy In Peril (1972) - comes his third and much better loved LP, Paris 1919. Released in 1973, Cale has regained ground here, still flexing a wonderful talent for songcraft, yet also an entirely new orchestral chamber pop direction, easily foiling the unflappable cool cat persona depicted on the front cover, and eschewing the dark experimentalism of his preceding album. Where it's not plush with string movements, Paris 1919 brims with softly-strung guitar arpeggiations and electric piano hooks, its placid easy listening approach much befitting of the Paris Peace Conference, and other related postwar drives to armistice, that bestruck the public imagination during the earliest post-war 20th Century.

Review: Music legend John Cale, best known as the Welsh multi-instrumentalist who co-founded The Velvet Underground, which went on to become one of the most influential groups of all time, is best known for his collaborative work in bands and his work as a producer. But he has a storied solo catalogue. With releases stretching from 1970 to 2024, there's an impressive array to delve into. His fourth album, Fear, is considered by fans to be one of his best. Fear was recorded when Cale returned to living in London after spending years in America. A slew of musicians also signed to Island at the time appear on the record, including Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music and Brian Eno. It's a truly compelling mix of avant garde freakouts and melancholic art rock that's a reminder that music can be incredibly freeing and transcendental when played with this level of imagination and spirit.

Review: Exciting times await, as the Velvet Underground's all-round founding superstar and in-his-own-right legend John Cale gears up to release his eigteenth full-length studio album, POPtical Illusion. The follow-up to 2023's highly collaborative album Mercy, POPtical Illusion hears a return to solo songwriting and performance and was produced by Cale along with his manager Nita Scott in his LA studio. The album is led by the oddball indie electronica ballad 'How We See The Light', which is indicative of its overall sound and message; bright pop belters in retrograde, amid lyrical musings on wasted times, lost futures and corporate climbs.

Review: This is the second of three inventive and influential albums that John Cale released through Island Records in the mid-70s. The Velvet Underground founding member was in stellar company with Brian Eno, Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera and one of the most prolific studio session guitarists of all time, Chris Spedding, all appearing on the album. The album is stacked with bangers, but of note is the life-affirming and soulful 'Dirtyass Rock 'n' Roll; his cover of 'Heartbreak Hotel', which is one of the best covers ever recorded and 'I'm Not The Loving Kind'. The latter gained recognition most recently when the late, great Mark Lanegan covered it beautifully for his Imitations album. Cale will forever be a wellspring of inspiration.

Review: John Cale's POPtical Illusion continues the themes of fierce and inquisitive rage from his previous album Mercy. The album, his second in just over a year, showcases Cale's refusal to repeat himself, delving into mazes of synthesisers, samples, organs and pianos with swirling, hopeful lyrics. Produced by Cale and Nita Scott, the album reflects Cale's restless pursuit of change and innovation over his six-decade career. The lead single, 'How We See the Light', begins things with Cale contemplating change and new beginnings amidst a backdrop of sonic experimentation. POPtical Illusion shows Cale's commitment to pushing boundaries and exploring new musical territories, reaffirming his status as a vanguard in the music world.

Review: It's hard to feel 'meh' about John Cale. In fact, it's impossible. The Welsh musician, Velvet Underground alumni and composer has given us 18 studio albums, including June 2024's Poptical Illusion, and there's nary a misstep in the lot. His latest plays out like a warm bath full of dreamy optimism, a follow up to the highly collaborative affair, Mercy, here we see the super-talent adjust his focus and fly out alone to prove the point. And prove it he does. Across 12 weird and unarguably wonderful tracks, Cale manages to defy genres, flitting between chamber punk and beach pop, theatrical croon-dom and syrupy downtempo. While there are dark-er moods, 'Funkball The Brewster', for example, on the whole this is smile-inducing, if bat-shit crazy stuff, from start to finish.

Review: Bill Callahan comes alive in Chicago, with Jim White, Matt Kinsey and special guests Nick Mazzarella, Pascal Kerong'A, Nathaniel Ballinger and Natural Information Society's Joshua Abrams & Lisa Alvarado. In answer to the question of why he made this album, Bill responded: "Songs tend to mutate after they've been recorded. These songs were mutating faster than usual. Like whatever happened to Bruce Banner in the lab - I knew these songs were about to get superpowers" this change needed to be documented." Resuscitate! was thus born out of a pulmonary metamorphosis, its ten avant-folk pieces recalling themes of rebirth after lung failure and/or clinical death and NDE. A live album of collective jams, viola-tremolos, rural connotations and deep vocal charges as ever from Callahan; all are given fresh mutative life.

Review: Glasgow indie pop sonic-photographers Camera Obscura have always been masters of subtlety and this sense of finesse only hears a bolstering on the new record Look To The East, Look To The West. After the sad loss of their former founding member and keyboardist Carey Lander in 2015, the group took the time out for a much-needed hiatus before reuniting for the recording of this personally redemptive full-length. Led by the soft, tambouring jangles of 'Big Love', the album's lead single, we're met with an elegiac but ultimately hopeful recollection, via its lovingly prodding lyrics ("it was a big love, she said, the kind of big love that made you easily led") and sonic resemblance of Waylon Jennings.

Look To The East, Look To The West
Review: Scottish indie-pop survivors Camera Obscura have been operative since the mid 1990s, though they've effectively been on hiatus for the last decade. Look To The East, Look To The West, then, is a comeback of sorts - though no doubt the Tracyanne Campbell-fronted outfit would no doubt play down this aspect of the story. They think it is their most well-crafted and 'sophisticated' set to date - a kind of distillation of the jangly, cheery and tuneful indie-pop sound they've always done well, with a wider palette of influences (note the lilting pedal steel on the superb title track, the twinkling piano lament of 'Sugar Almond' and the saucer-eyed dream pop of 'Denon'). We tend to agree; whether a comeback or not, it's a hugely enjoyable album that should appeal to dedicated fans and newcomers alike.

This album unveils the band's core emotions, evoking both sadness and exhilaration. The album follows the loss of keyboardist Carey Lander and a hiatus, yet the band regrouped to craft a poignant work. With Donna Maciocia joining, they created tracks that explore themes of love, loss, and longing, leaving listeners emotionally stirred. This Scottish group's first new album in over a decade, it masterfully blends sadness and exhilaration, leaving listeners emotionally rearranged.

Review: Second time around for German new-wave and wayward synth-pop outfit Camouflage's 1993 album Bodega Bohemia - a set that was initially only released in Germany due to conflict with the band's record label. It saw them pivot away from the sound of their previous album and back towards synthesisers and drum machines, with the trio reportedly wanting to make it "as electronic as possible". There are hints of mid-80s goth and New Romantic, though the influence of the turn-of-the-90s indie-dance sound made famous by the likes of the Stone Roses and New Order is much greater. This anniversary edition also boasts two additional discs: one (CD2) showcasing radio edits, B-sides and remixes from the period, and another (CD3) comprising demos, live recordings and unheard instrumental takes.

Review: Isobel Campbell's sixth studio album, Bow to Love, released via Cooking Vinyl, is a wonderful example of her distinct blend of wisdom and musical dexterity. Campbell, formerly of Belle and Sebastian, navigates the complexities of the modern world with humour and optimism, addressing toxic masculinity, social media, and political polarization.Bow to Love shines thematically as a nuanced state-of-the-world reflection. Tracks like 'Everything Falls Apart' and 'Do or Die' poignantly critique societal issues, with Campbell's voice serving as a comforting presence. The title track cleverly subverts the notion that love is a cure-all, suggesting instead that it's 'not enough to bow to love'. The single '4316' changes pace with a catchy hook, critiquing the rise of artificial intelligence, while 'Keep Calm and Carry On' subtly protests Brexit. Bow to Love concludes with a hopeful cover of Dire Straits' 'Why Worry,' encapsulating Campbell's belief in human resilience and kindness amid uncertainty. Campbell's ability to blend insightful lyrics with soothing melodies is highly underrated but very much appreciated.

Nearly 25 years after his 1999 debut My Vinyl Weighs a Ton, Manak revisits his high school garage band roots by forming this project to reinterpret lesser-known tracks from the late 60s to early 80s. With Manak on vocals and Ellis providing instruments, Campus Christy is a nostalgic nod to the past that blends influences from an era that shaped Manak's musical journey. It's both a personal tribute and a fresh exploration of forgotten gems.

The five-piece group did their usual trick of expertly weaving together repeating themes and riffs while responding to each other in real-time. The dynamic interplay between keyboards from Schmidt, guitar from Karoli and Suzuki's vocals is driven by the powerful Czukay and Liebezeit rhythm section. Featuring comprehensive sleeve notes and full recording details, this release includes all tracks written by Can members Czukay, Karoli, Liebezeit, Schmidt and Suzuki, all of which were captured live at The Paris Theatre, London on February 19th. This long remoured album features Can's late-period lineup: Irmin Schmidt, Jaki Liebezeit, Michael Karoli, and Holger Czukay, joined by Rosko Gee on bass. Czukay's shift to "waveform radio and spec. sounds" adds an otherworldly layer to the band's hypnotic, avant-garde textures. Pieced together from archival and fan recordings, the album highlights the unpredictable and experimental nature of Can's live performances during their 1976-77 peak. The inclusion of tracks that fans have long considered the best of their live work brings a raw, dynamic energy. Fans of Can's legendary improvisations will appreciate the diversity of sound, from ambient passages to intense, chaotic jams. Live in Keele 1977 stands as a crucial document of the band's legacy as they explore "inner space rock" and live sonic exploration.

Review: Can Live in Keele 1977 is the latest installment in a series of live albums carefully curated from Spoon Records' vaults and fan recordings by founding member Irmin Schmidt and producer Rene Tinner. This much-anticipated release, captures a dynamic performance from March 1977, featuring the core lineup of Schmidt, Jaki Liebezeit, Michael Karoli and Holger Czukay, enhanced by the addition of bassist Rosko Gee (Traffic). During a challenging period following the lukewarm reception of their eighth studio album, Saw Delight, this concert exemplifies Can's late-period vibrancy. Gee's presence allowed Czukay to focus on "waveform radio and spec. sounds", creating an ethereal atmosphere filled with otherworldly textures. This release concludes the series that began with Can Live in Stuttgart 1975 and includes acclaimed recordings from their live performances throughout Europe from 1973 to 1977. Each album reveals the band's unique ability to blend hypnotic grooves with avant-garde improvisation, offering listeners a fresh perspective on Can's innovative artistry. Fans can expect an exhilarating journey through their expansive musical landscape, filled with both familiar motifs and new explorations.

Released via Mute and Future Days, this release provides a glimpse into a challenging period for Can, following the mixed reception their eighth studio album, Saw Delight, elicited. Despite any expectations of a decline in energy or creativity, the live performances captured on this album defy such notions. Instead, they showcase Can's enduring vitality and adaptability, reaffirming their reputation as a band capable of captivating audiences with their unpredictable live shows. Notably, Live in Aston 1977 marks the debut of bassist Rosko Gee (Traffic) within the Can Live series. Review: Originally released in 2009 and celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, Evisceration Plague would serve as the 11th full-length from Buffalo, New York (now Florida based) brutal death metal legends Cannibal Corpse. Following on from 2006's critically acclaimed Kill, the band promised themselves to endeavour to make each subsequent project even heavier, a feat they managed to accomplish by re-enlisting Hate Eternal guitarist Erik Rutan as producer (some years before he would ultimately join the group full-time). Tempering the balance of their vicious sonic onslaught with slower, grooving cuts like the malodorous title-track, whilst also veering into chaotic grindcore territory on the abrasive 'Scalding Hail', the album exemplifies their tireless consistency and compositional virtuosity, leaving little wonder as to how they've maintained their place atop the bone-strewn, viscera soaked planes of the death metal landscape for so many a decade.

Like true audiophiles, the album - often shortened to just Shmap'n Shmazz - has been remastered from the original tapes. For those wondering, Cap'n Jazz are trailblazers in their field - widely recognized for having shaped the sound of mathy Midwest Emo. And after they left Cap'n Jazz, the members formed a slew of other terrific groups, including the mighty American Football, who are regularly lauded as pioneers. But 30 years on from their sole release, Cap'n Jazz are quite rightly ready for their victory lap. Immerse into cuts such as the timeless 'Little League' and the high-octane 'In The Clear', where the yelpy vocals and pummeling drums are the essence of high-octane rock n' roll, and you'll get the fervour surrounding them.

Review: The Spotlight Kid was Captain Beefheart's sixth studio album and one, landing a mere three years after the legendary Trout Mask Replica classic, sees him continuing his avant-garde brilliance. Initially released in 1972, it stands out as the only album credited solely to Captain Beefheart, even though it does feature much of his Magic Band prominently. The material, integral to the band's repertoire, highlights Beefheart's eclectic musical vision and experimental spirit, taking raw blues as its starting point but then twisting into it hithertoo unrecognisable shapes and psychedelic distortions. Reissued for Record Store Day 2024 as a deluxe double LP set in a gatefold jacket with milky clear vinyl, this edition revitalises the album's enigmatic charm for contemporary audiences and reminds us all of its magnificent blend of blues, rock and avant-garde elements.

Review: Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band are the latest act to be featured in Warner's series of Now Playing greatest hits-style comps. Born Don Vliet, Captain Beefheart was a true innovator in modern music, boasting a four-and-a-half-octave vocal range, and fused free jazz, Delta blues, classical music and rock & roll with unique rhythms and surreal lyrics. Though he never achieved mainstream success, his influence permeated punk, new wave and post-rock and this album shows why, with tracks like 'I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby' and 'Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles' showcasing his bolder moves, alongside the more introspective 'My Head Is My Only House When It Rains' and 'Clear Spot.' Vliet, a child prodigy in art, moved to the Mojave Desert in his teens, where he met Frank Zappa. They initially collaborated on a film project, but Vliet eventually formed the Magic Band. After several lineup changes, they released the seminal Trout Mask Replica in 1969. Beefheart's career spanned various experimental phases until he retired in 1982 to focus on painting, earning acclaim for his abstract outsider art.
