Love & Happiness (4:57)
Yellow Bird (4:44)
Review: Monty Alexander's 'Love & Happiness,' it might not surprise you to learn, is a cover version of the great Al Green's 'Love & Happiness.' He hooked up with Ernest Ranglin for the occasion and the pair laid it down in 1974, two years after the original came out, with super slick jazz-funk fusion over a reggae tinged beat. The original chords are recognisable, but the whole track i such more mellifluous and bright, the golden chords oozing warmth and the rolling rhythm getting you feeling all snuggly and loved up. Definitely worth a place in your collection.

Temple Duel (5:06)
Temple Dub (5:02)
Review: Blimey, if this isn't major meeting of musical Midas minds then we don't know what is. Alter Echo, E3 and Headland all collaborating with legendary dub flautist Diggory Kenrick. "Temple Duel" sets the scene in deep underground chambers, untouched by the sun. Reverb space is our only guide and ritual combat is the only way out as we make our way through subsonic 808 bass foundations, a near-industrial mid-range bass guitar groove, stiff snares, stick-fighting percussion and Diggory's torchlight melody. A truly fluid hypnotic narrative that arcs through the dark, if you're looking for an even foggier route flip for "Temple Dub" where the torch is extinguished and you have nothing but your sonic wits to take you home. Only Diggory knows if you make alive or not...

Brown Sugar - "Hello Stranger" (3:13)
Elizabeth Archer - "Feel Like Making Love" (2:32)
Review: A boxy dub sound and tight playing is all that is needed across the message of Brown Sugar and Elizabeth Archer's 'Hello Stranger' nicely. The produce of two British reggae singers who were part of the lovers rock scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s, this 7" is the eighth release on Ximeno Records, a label that specializes in reissues of rare and obscure singles from various genres, not necessarily limited to reggae. These are actually two covers: the A is of the Barbara Lewis classic, covered with an extra-sweet lovers rock amour; the B is a version of the time-honoured Roberta Flack hit.

Review: This is a super limited 7" that has been pressed only 200 times on black vinyl. It finds Scottish production team Capitol 1212 serve up a super good reinterpretation of Joy Division's most iconic and enduring hit, 'Love Will Tear Us Apart.' The re-sung vocal comes in a rasta style thanks to the featured artists and acclaimed Studio One and Dreadzone singer Earl Sixteen. His devastating verses pair nicely with the deep dub beats and distance piano keys. The b-side features an exclusive dub versions that has never been heard before.

Review: Scottish production team Capitol 1212 serve up a killer reinterpretation of Joy Division's devastating hit, with sublime vocal from Studio One / Dreadzone singer Earl Sixteen. As with many modern pop classics, it's as if the tune we're destined for dub; Sixteen's vocals sound paradoxically original, as they're matched by eighth-note pedalizations of the song's melody. The 'Dub Division' mix, meanwhile, is even more smeared in delay, reverb, triggers and sirenny FX wobbles. A remarkably convincing remix, perhaps on par with Egoless' 'Night'.

Review: Johnny Clarke and Earth & Stone cooked up some real magic with 'Babylon'. It's a sumptuous sound that offers a symbolic representation of societal oppression and injustice. With Johnny Clarke's haunting vocals and Earth & Stone's mesmerising rhythms, the tune becomes a poignant commentary on the struggles of the marginalised and the quest for freedom. Through those lyrics and hypnotic melodies, it confronts issues of systemic inequality and political corruption, urging people to rise against oppression. As such it is anther great tune that proves the enduring relevance of reggae as a voice for the oppressed.

Review: If you're looking for an EP packed to the rafters with a mixture of attractive digi-reggae vocal numbers and soundsystem-bothering dubs, we'd highly recommend this 12" from leading Dutch crew King Shiloh. What's on offer is a sextet of 'versions' based around the same steppers-tinged digi-dub riddim from Dub Creator (instrumental versions of which are tagged on to the end of each side of the record). The riddim itself is a good one, with a stabbing bassline, picturesque piano stabs, flanged guitars and some unusual instrumental choices. The songs built on this solid foundation are all superb, with our picks of the bunch being Empress Black Omolo's soulful and positive, 'Love is the Weapon' and the cheeriness of Discyple's surprisingly accordion-heavy 'All Things Possible'.

Review: Main man Echo Ranks brings his meditative messages on "Politician" above some heavyweight and decidedly modern dub from Dubbing Sun on Moonshine. Such conscious messages will always make their mark when delivered on a decisive dub - the hits are fresh, the bass has that swagger and the whole mood is shady and nocturnal. Small Town offers a tricky "Dubz Roots" version while Radical Guru offers more broken beat and destructive remixes on the flip-side for when you need to rip the floor apart. Add in those warrior leads and you've got a real standout dub.

This latest one sees Dubmatix lay down a stepper's riddim with a deep bassline that rumbles on for days. Kazam Davis and Exile Di Brave both feature to drop some raggedy arsed chants on "High Life", then things get more colourful and psyched-out on the flip thanks to a knob-twiddling and vital dub mix from Dubmatix. Bass doesn't come much heavier than this one, so snap it up and get it dropped.

Review: The next Boom Shacka Lacka is yet another crucial outing for dub heads. It comes from The Disciples and features the pipes of Earl 16. It features two different tunes in two different forms starting with 'Life Is A Journey', a mid-tempo and fat-bottomed dub with pleading vocals from Earl up top next to some natty keys and horns. A hefty dub version is next up with some signature hissing hi-hats and rumbling bass. The B-side has 'Journey Dub' to sink you into a spotter mind before a different mix of it then brings more raw harmonic leads.

Review: Indica Dubs rolls out more of their steel-plated warrior anthems here with the in-house production team stepping up next to Nando for Eternal Dub. This crucial 12" opens with the title cut, which is a collab between the two that rolls on moody drums and has an enchanting melodic lead up top, snaking its way to a better future. The rework is 'Eternal Dubwise,' a more wet and bottomless affair, then Indica Dubs and Nando reunite for 'Sacred Fire' which is busier, more energetic, with broken beats and playful leads. Last of all comes the dub-wise rework that is menacing and dark for those late-night hours.

It was originally penned by Winston MacAnuff, also known as the Electric Dread, and features vocals by Earl Sixteen. It has previously debuted as a 7" on Gibbs' Belmont label in 1975, while Sixteen went on and recorded it again for Derrick Harriott on the Wild Flower label a year later. Review: Earl Zero is a foundational figure in the roots reggae scene of '70s Jamaica. Working with producer Bunny Lee on this self-penned piece, it was originally given to the more established singer Johnny Clarke in 1975 and went on to become a hit. It wasn't until 1980 that Earl's own version came out on Epiphany Records and saw similar success. "None Shall Escape The Judgement" is a crucial cut that rides on a higgledy-piggledy rhythm section as bass twangs and rim shots peel off the groove. Earl's buttery, blissed out and heartfelt delivery soars up top next to celebratory trumpets to seal the deal in style.

Review: Nick "Linkwood" Moore and Euan Fryer established East Coast Love Affair with the idea of making it the "Athens of the North house band". They've recently released a slew of singles, of which this sparkling, soulful cover version of Eddie Kendricks' favourite 'Date With The Rain', featuring the silky voice of lover's rock legend Peter Hunningale, is arguably the most revelatory. Rich in leisurely but ear-catching drum machine patters, warming bass and spakrling synth sounds, the duo's full vocal cover version sits somewhere between lover's rock, street soul and mid-80s electrofunk. Fittingly, it comes backed with 'Dub With The Rain', a delay-laden instrumental take that subtly showcases the depth and beauty of the pair's backing track while also adding a little extra low-end grunt. Simply sublime.

Review: Eastern Roots have built up a small but well formed discography since debuting 2012. It was in 2018 that this particular wax first landed and is now made available again during these red hot days of summer 2020. "Signs Of The Times" is a playful and mysterious jam which is in no hurry to go anywhere, instead looping the same flute lines up top and natty chords over hot-stepping drums. A meandering lead does eventually join the party and only serves to heighten to the trip. On the flip, two different versions strip things back in brain frying and dubbed out ways.

The focus here is largely on the A-side hook-up with roots scene stalwart I-David. In both its original and Dub Mix variations, "Freedom Fighter" is an exercise in floor-friendly dub reggae rich in Augustus Pablo style Melodica solos, meandering delay trails, ricocheting percussion and heavy sub-bass. Over on side B, Eastern Roots goes solo on two versions of the more exotic and electronic soundsystem dub workout "Elements", with the decidedly trippy and mind-altering Dub revision being our pick.

This 12" is a reissue of one of Ellis' most celebrated All Tone releases, which first surfaced in 1985. While flipside 'Diverse Doctrine' is a rock-solid slab of club-slanted roots reggae, A-side 'Earth Needs More Love' is a much more far-sighted and low-slung affair. A-side "Pumping In", an early rocksteady treat, is rich in R&B style guitar riffs, warm bass and an echo-laden vocal from Ellis. On side A you'll find 'Rock Steady', a hugely influential rocksteady gem that features Ellis' encouraging us to dance atop a weighty, horn-heavy riddim track. Over on the flip Phyllis Dillon takes over lead vocal duties on another Treasure Isle gem from '67, 'Rocking Time'. This one is even more club-ready, with McCook's cheerful horn arrangements catching the ear.

Alton Ellis - "Blackish White" (2:31)
Alton Ellis & Sound Dimension - "Blackish White" (version) (2:28)
Review: You know by now that Soul Jazz never misses and this new 7" is no different - a raw as you like and heavy roots reggae classic from Alton Ellis. It's hypnotic in a dark manner with surreal synths and muggy atmospheres on 'Blackish White' which also features some next-level wordsmithery of the sort you don't often get in reggae. The Sound Dimension step up on the flip with their own dubbed out version to make this a red hot release for sound system freaks.

Alton Ellis & The Flames - "If I Could Rule The World" (with Tommy McCook & The Supersonics) (2:25)
Tyrone Evans - "If This World Were Mine" (with Tommy McCook & The Supersonics) (2:19)
Review: Alton Nehemiah Ellis was known as Mr Soul of Jamaica thanks to the hugely expressive voice he was gifted with. He also had a fine knack for writing great songs and always brought real emotions to his work. That is typified here as he linked with The Flames as well as Tommy McCook & The Supersonics for the buttery smooth and impassioned 'If I Could Rule The World' with its natty riffs, swaggering drums and of course golden vocals. Tyrone Evans takes acre of the flip with a version that is more upbeat and optimistic as a result.

Alton Ellis - "I'm Still In Love" (3:27)
The Soul Vendors - "Just A Bit Of Soul" (3:06)
Review: Alton Ellis' "I'm Still In Love" is one of Jamaica's most famous songs. It has a rich history, too, that was the inspiration for Althea and Donna's 1997 smash "Uptown Top Ranking" and here it gets a loud-cut 12" pressing that allows it to soar. It's a track full of longing, with dusty keys and a natty bassline finished off with gorgeous vocals. The flipside houses the Soul Vendors' "Just A Bit Of Soul" featuring Jackie Mittoo. It's a more upbeat ditty with bumpier drums and jazz flecked keys to get you grooving.

Bobby Ellis & The Upsetters - "Ska Version" (3:10)
Review: Bobby Ellis is behind 'Ska Baby', which was produced and directed by the Upsetter and now comes backed with a lush dub and a custom bag. It's actually one of the more subtle instrumentals to come from the famous Black Ark studio founded by Lee "Scratch" Perry and epitomises a warm day, beer in hand, dusty dry earth beneath your feet as you saunter though downtown Jamaica. Well, we assume this is how it must feel, never having been there during the 70s or 80s ourselves. Whatever, it's a perfectly organic and authentic vibe that is perfectly transportative.

Review: This red hot double sided 7" 'It's Time For Love' / 'The Arabian Sound Of Reggae' is a classic joint from 1975. Japan's Dub Store has licensed a reissue here that makes it affordable again to all. Bobby Ellis & Val Bennett Mazuies join forces first up on 'The Arabian Sound Of Reggae' make for a nice roots roller with hypnotic melodies layered up over the earthy drums. On the flip is Owen Grey's 'It's Time For Love' which is another gem. Both tunes were produced by Bunny Lee and bring that timeless roots sound.

People Make The World Go Round (version) (2:58)
Review: Hortense Ellis was the sister of Jamaican reggae legend Alton Ellis, but this familial link made her contribution to music no less powerful. Her 1973 cover of The Stylistics' hit 'People Make The World Go Round', released two years earlier, is a snappy, tight, organ-driven rendition in reggae, and is a powerful paean to the principle of people over profit. A Studio One classic, it's one of many to come under the umbrella of Sir Coxsone Dodd, and now comes reissued by Soul Jazz Records with the original dub version on the flip.

Genesis To Revelation (6:49)
Seven Days A Week (6:19)
Review: Noel Ellis - son of the great Alton Ellis - released a number of fine records throughout the 1980s. One of the finest, and subsequently one of his more sought-after singles, is 'Genesis to Revelation', which first appeared on 12" via the All Tone label way back in 1984. As this welcome reissue proves, the record has lost none of its allure in the years since it first hit record stores. You'll find the title track - a slightly oddly-swung, bass-heavy number whose surprisingly jazzy electric guitar motifs catch the ear through the seven-minute reggae 'disco-mix' - on side A, with the slower, more dubby and arguably even better 'Seven Days a Week' on side B. It's sweeter and more loved-up than the A-side, with even more low-end weight.

Cosmic Shuffling - "Merry-Go-Round" (2:53)
Review: The Liquidator Music crew have been putting out classic Jamaican rhythms ice the mid-cities and still goes strong. This is an all new one from Jamaican act Roy Ellis who sings over his backing band, Cosmic Shuffing, from Switzerland. They are acclaimed in ska and rock steady circles for good reason and help bring these tunes to life. 'Shine Your Light On Me' is an easy going roller with lo-fi drums and dusty riffs that hook you in while Ellis does his work up top. 'Merry-Go-Round' then cuts loose on a summery and swirling vibe with conversational lead trumpets and natty chords.

Roy Ellis - "Rudy Skankin' On The Moon" (4:05)
Woodfield Rd Allstars - "Moonwalkin'" (4:06)
Review: Original rudeboy Roy Ellis is best known for his Symarip association. Here he's back with an all-new 7" that shows he is still on top of his game. 'Rudy Skankin' On The Moon' actually first dropped as a set of vocals by Melbourne Douglas on Original Gravity's Reggae Dynamite Vol. 2. Now it comes as a sequel to 'Skinhead Moonstomp' which was an OG skinhead reggae anthem by Ellis's Symarip. It's a timeless sound with all the swagger you would expect, great vocals and plenty of Hammond organ action. Flip it over for an early reggae version by the Woodfield Rd Allstars.

Vibes From The Tribe (Al Breadwinner dub mix)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has light surface marks/scratches with creasing to corner of outer sleeve, but otherwise in perfect working condition***

Recorded at Sam Shepherd's Floating Productions Studio, this superb seven-inch sees contemporary space-age jazzman Emanative join forces with legendary trombonist Phil Ranelin. In its original form, "Vibes From The Tribe" is a deliciously warm and hazy chunk of intergalactic dancefloor jazz rich in skittish, post-hip-hop drums, gently rising horns, spacey effects and spiritual spoken word vocals. It's utterly brilliant as is Al Breadwinner's flipside dub, which takes the pair's original version even deeper into space via copious amounts of reverb, tape-echo and traditional Jamaican dub production techniques. We actually like this revision even more than the original, which tells you how good the seven-inch single is. Essential!

Review: Emapea has put a number of highly collectible beats over the years and now the Polish master is back with some more on his home label Cold Busted. He switches up the style a little here though and goes for a couple of crucial dubs and phat riddims. his is music for smoking and zoning out to, with a global dance hall vibe run through with toasting vocals and echoing perc. Perfect for big sound systems even though vibe is introspective and heady, these are powerful skankers for all to enjoy. For our mom, the heavier, deeper, more sun kissed flip side 'Drop The Bass' is the real winner.

Review: September is a big one for Digital English who have two stone cold killers out on the same day. This one marks a return to the label for Lin Strong, Empress Baby Luv and boss Digital English, as well as a debut for Kniox and Indica Dubs talent Chazbo. There is a brain cleansing crispness to the off-balance chords of "Sufferation" while the sub runs impossibly deep. As ever, Chazbo serves up chest pumping, floor filling warrior synth lines on the excellent "Sounds Of Meditation" and the boss strips it back to a deeper, slower dub to round things up in mesmeric fashion.

Review: Precious Metals NTS host Endgame makes his debut on Golden Mist... And it's not to be missed. Grafting at the harsh coalface of instrumental grime, he's carved four distinctive riddim tracks, each one reflecting his breadth and widescreen imagination. From the shimmering timpani harmonies of "Unlikd Riddim" to the soaring siren roars of "Sniper Riddim" via the dreamy downbeat of the LA-beat style "Koi" and the liquid rhythmic drops and fractured elements of "Luxury Riddim", it's an extensive and physical assault of the senses. Also included is a vocal redux of "Sniper" and a bright and bashy shake up of "Sniper Riddim" by Dinamarca. Heavy.

Review: Japanese rocksteady and reggae revivalists Inokisara Rangers have spent much of their career delivering radical cover versions of everything from Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and New Order's 'Blue Monday' to Pharrel Williams' 'Happy' and Underworld's 'Born Slippy'. They're at it again on their latest "45", with vocalist Yuima Enya joining them for two more ear-catching reggae revisions. On side A they offer-up a typically jaunty, organ-heavy take on Britney Spears/Mark Ronson favourite 'Toxic', reimagining it as a cheery and skanking reggae-soul bumper. Arguably even better is the flipside cover of R&B classic 'Waterfalls', which in their hands becomes a slow-motion reggae sing-along.
