Dennis Brown & Dhaima - "A True" (3:39)
Joe Gibbs & The Professionals - "Nu True" (3:37)
Review: Experience the brilliance of Dennis Brown's late 70s roots vocal cut with this crucial reissue from Joe Gibbs. This new 45rpm features captivating harmonies by the acclaimed USA singer Dhaima, who is a frequent Brown collaborator, and here they combine in superb fashion for a deep roller with buttery vocals. On the flip side, indulge in the mesmerising dub version crafted by The Mighty Two. This is another great reggae release from the tireless folk at the Joe Gibbs imprint.

Whip Them (4:12)
Whip Them (Frenk EchoSpace remix) (4:49)
Review: Scrupulously heavy and skanky Netherlands dub comes swanging our way from Bukkha, in collaboration with Dubbing Sun and Donovan Kingjay. 'Whip Dem' hears the Jamaican-American producer's dubwise productions meet fellow artists from Austria and South East London respectively; Kingjay's vocals deliver a powerful message of justice and liberation over a deep, clean steppers' riddim. Meanwhile, the B-side features Frenk Dublin's EchoSpace remix, which while adding more delay to the original, detracts nothing from its timely sense of space and weight.

Moses (riddim - mixman dub Section) (3:52)
Review: D.Maximillian first put the sone out in 1999, and it was then reissued again on white vinyl in 2012. This is that version and it's a timeless dub with a lament for Jah married to losing, heart aching horns. The drums never let up and there is s subtle sci-fi style to the keys that rain down which keep it superbly futuristic. 'Moses' also comes as a shorter, tighter 'riddim - mixman dub Section' version on the flip that lays bare some of the fine mixing board magic.

Sweet Dreams (feat Zed Field)
Experimental Sounds (Dad Bod dub)
Review: Don't let the name mislead you: the artist behind this release might be called Dad Bod Dubs, which might be suggestive of something overtly jokey or unserious, but the music on this new 7" from Cry No More is rich and textural and not flippant in the slightest. A dubbed version of Eurythmics' 'Sweet Dreams' appears on the A, coming in a completely different key and swamping the original lyrics in a wash of dub haze. The B-side's 'Experimental Sounds', meanwhile, evokes the slow plod of Tradition's LPs: heavy use of dub effects, combined in such a way as to evoke the sound of a great spaceship-submarine, lurching through the cosmic seas.

Dub Don't Mind (3:14)
Review: 2Tone icon Rhoda Dakar is back on suitably dusty pink vinyl 7" given that it drops the day after Valentine's Day. This one is another reggae-infused cover following the success of her latest album, 'Version Girl.' 'I Don't Mind' was originally penned by Peter Shelley of Buzzcocks but here gets the Rhoda treatment, and is an homage to one of Rhoda's favourite songwriters. It pays tribute to Shelley's songwriting prowess and reflects on an encounter with Shelley in 2015. Dakar's soulful rendition of it means 'I Don't Mind' resonates as a timeless tribute.

Moving On (version) (4:03)
Review: Rock A Shaka is hella busy right now and continues to drop mad heat on a very busy schedule. It is now Dave & Earnest who step up with their unique take on reggae. This one is coloured by disco and boogie with dazzling results. 'Moving On' has big horns over soul-stepping beats and retro 80s drum sounds. The vocals drip with sexiness and a killer bassline finishes in style. The version dials it back to a fleshy dub with the tooting horns left in to get your juices going.

Never Leave You (part 2) (2:48)
Review: Lloydie Slim produced arguable all of the best music made by Ronnie Davis. Here comes fine expand of that with a previously unreleased tune on the Records Smith label. 'Never Leave You' comes in two parts with lovely lazy rhythms and dangling, jangling guitars over warm bass. The vocals soar and the horns bring the vibes net to Ronnie's buttery smooth vocal work. On the flip is part 2, a more stripped back version that is a little heavier and fatter.

Jingling Keys (instrumental) (4:36)
Review: Sangie Davis might be best known for co-writing Bob Marley's 'Waiting In Vain', but his lesser-sung originals are just as quality. 'Jingling Keys' is one such song: a roots reggae tune with a message of liberation hemmed into the symbolic theme of keys jingling in an insurgent's pocket. The dub version functions as a key-change (get it?), which serves to slow down the tune and bask in its two-tone emotions on a deeper level.

Hot & Sticky (2:29)
Review: The Harlem Shuffle label comes through with another one of its well chosen and crucial 7"s, this time from Carl Dawkins. As always with this label it is a highly sought after tune that was first only ever put out as a B-side to the One Dollar Of Music release. It's a fat and chunky rhythm with rolling drums and earthy acoustic guitars, impassioned vocals from Dawkins and plenty of sunny vibes. On the flip is 'Hot & Sticky' which is a little more upright but just as hot and steamy.

Review: Soma sub-label Avoidant Records recently put out a fantastic collection fo electro cuts but it was a digital only release. Now some of the standouts from it get pulled together on this fresh new 12"that joins the dots between Europe and Detroit. DJ Godfather kicks off with some rapid fire 313 electro, squirrelling bass and slick claps then 'One Direct Line' from The Exaltics is more cosmic and blissed out with lush ambient synths. On the flip, Flug goes hard with mad digital patterns and Blaktony layers up jacking drums, corrugated bass and dark hits. Great stuff.

Stark futurism that smoulders at its coldest and will have you shivering at its hottest, vibes range from the shimmering Basic Channel style reflections of 'B1' to the more autonomically minded swagger of 'B3'. Adieu Chez Cherie (6:53)
Review: Depending on your cultural references you will know that Things Fall Apart is either the title of an album by hip-hop greats The Roots, the debut 1958 novel by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe or Jon Ronson's latest Radio 4 series on the culture wars. Here it is a deeply mystic techno 10" by Deadbeat. Back in July, he worked with Sa Pa on their first collaborative album on the anniversary of BLKRTZ's 50th release and what a stunner it was. Here he casts free and deep into an oceanic abyss with drum-less floating currents and drifting melodies on 'Things Fall Apart' then a more hunched and dynamic dub groove on 'Adieu Chez Cherie.'

Review: For those in the know, this new collab between veteran Portuguese DJ and producer Dedy Dread and fast-rising Hawaiian singing star Olivia Ruff has been a long time coming. But it was worth the wait. The opener 'Cover Me' features Ruff's, well, slightly rough - or at least gravelly - vocals over a rhythm and bass instrumental. It's accented with wispy chords, neat little guitar riffs and crunchy claps. Flip it over and you'll find a remix by label founder The Rebel and Roman pianist and producer Shiny D. Their version is a modern update with brilliant reggaeton rhythms.

Review: A welcome return from Deepchord, who shows the newset of dub techno players how, exactly, it is done. After 5 years, he returns to Soma Records with 'Functional Extraits 1' here, charting shuffly and subtle trips through echoic hallways ('Mapping') and rain-pattered biomech rainforests ('Shale'), and scanning the post-Earth wasteland for any semblance of a real reggae chord. With the final track almost entirely consisting of texture and bass, we can happily declare this to be next-level dub techno.

Review: Deepchord serves us the second taster of his upcoming full-length, 'Functional Extraits', out later this year, piling on yet newer layers of texture to his trademark dub techno sound. On this sneak preview EP, 'Glyphs' pulsates through a bed of rattlesnake shakes, swirling ambience, and thunderous knocks, as though it's documenting some bioorganic brain's inner workings. Review: The Horus label's All Stars production outfit serves up some super fresh roots tunes here with plenty of early 70s influences. The a-side original 'Sinner Man' features vocals from former Pioneers singer George Dekker. His carefree style brings a real innocence as he muses on "using the bible as a tool to catch the fool." The rhythms are pure bait with natty guitar riffs just hanging in the air and noodling keys worked in deep. Flip it over for a dub version that is heavy on the knob twiddles and studio effects.

Here, for a special Record Store Day 20210 release, we get a remake of 1968 tunes 'Nana.' It first came on the Trojan label and is a highly sought after original that fetches plenty. Listening to this release, it's easy to trace the figures the Kingston-born Dillinger has labelled as key inspirations in the sound he brings into existence - namely Dennis Alcapone and Lee "Scratch" Perry, the latter of whom he found himself under the guidance of following his big break in 1974 with the release of his single 'Dub Organizer'. There's a reason this achieved serious playtime - though not necessarily on the radio - worldwide following its release. A key release you certainly won't want missing from your collection.

Review: Hivern Discs presents a very intriguing and totally unique project from Drames Rurals, a shadowy collective endeavour credited to "meritxell, oriol, ignasi and juns." Presented across three 7"s packed in a handmade sackcloth box, the careful presentation of the sounds matches up to the music, which rolls at low tempos and deals in hypnotic, ritualistic mantras with an earthen, spiritual feel. There's a dubby twist at times, and it feels like a series of happenings from an in-tune gathering rather than an over-composed project, and therein lies the magic. Who knows whether Hivern main man John Talabot is involved, but after last year's low-key Koraal project he might well be without making a big deal about it.

He's at it again on this first outing for Pinchy & Friends, which combines a trio of original cuts with a similar number of total reconstructions from dub hero Scientist. Review: Sub Merchants kick off a new 7" series with a special limited edition pressing of Drumterror ft. Dego Ranking & Ed Hodge's 'Social Dub.' The original version is as juicy as the orange depicted on the cover and finds the label head Drumterror in fine form with with the vocal talents of Ranking serving up some quick, tight bars that vibe nicely with the insistent chord stabs and heavy, rooted drums. The sax styling of Ed Hodge add extra sensuousness. On the flipside you get treated to a 'Social Version' that tweaks the original, layers in more echo and generally flips the vine to a more heady and late night sound.

Never You Wake The Dragon (4:23)
Dragon Fire Version (4:05)
Review: Chris 'The Dub Organiser' Lane meets Soothsayer Horns here and the results are simply irresistible. 'Soul Dragon Anthem' is a real gem with heart-swelling horn leads that toot and rouse. The chords are lazy and loose and a sprinkling of percussion and natty guitar riffs are integral to the rhythm overall. This 12" comes with some fresh artwork from Jeb Loy Nichols as well as three hefty dub versions, all of which do plenty of damage on a loud system. Another crucial 12" from Ital Counsellor.

Review: The Dub Smugglers are the loudest and proudest sound system in Manchester and this is their first ever recording. It draws on their vast experience of serving up big hitters on big bass bins and finds them teaming up with Jamaican legend and veteran mic-man Burro Banton, who the sharp-eared will recognised from Chase & Status' massive Return II Jungle album. They bring fresh new styles to a stone cold classic dancehall rhythm and bring it into the modern day with hefty low ends and compelling kick drum patterns. A version is on the flip for more direct business.

Liar Dub (4:14)
Track 2 (4:06)
Review: The mighty Dubforce served up his essential self titled solo album back in November of 2020. It packed a punch across the eight tunes and immediately sold out despite the import price. One of the standouts from it now makes its way on to its own 7". That tune is 'Liar Dub,' the sort of fat and heavy but tulles tune that could be from a mixing desk in 790s Jamaican or made in a hi-tech studio in Japan next week. The sub bass is all comforting, the hi hats leaving snaking tales and twisted vocal sounds add extra hooks. On the flip, 'Track 2' is a nice bit of contemporary Japanese roots.

Review: Jamaican musical heritage in all its glory gets distilled into this super new collaboration between Newham General (son of the late, great soundman Farda Waz) and Bristol's Dubkasm. Dub, reggae and grime all get drawn upon and twisted up with kette drums and rapid-fire vocals to make for something urgent and direct but timeless. The hard-hitting bars from Foots bring a sense of menace to the equally dark low ends, with digital synths and stepping rhythms all present and correct. The legendary Iration Steppas also feature with one of their signature mixes.

Review: Vinyl only and lucky if we see one release a year; Moonshine's Dubwise Revolution always keeps us keen with their white label 10s. This is no exception. Crafted by an anonymous source, these spicy versions join the dots in a contemporary, high grade way. Sleng tenging it out with plenty of molten low end, 'Garnedd' brings the soul while 'Ghetto Living' slugs it out with swagger. Grab it while you can.

Review: US dub crew Park Heights has got a real gem on their hands here with this latest 7". It is a killer jam from the mid-1980s that was made at Aquarius Studio. The 'live digital' tune has never before been released which is a wrong that is rightly corrected here and is even more special as it has Errol Dunkley on the rhythm even though it is not his usual style. It is a heavy stepper with loopy drums and hits that echo off to infinity as he drops his loved-up vocals over the. It of course comes with a superb dub on the flip.

Zacharie Ksyk - "Blowing In The Wind" (3:29)
Review: The Sound of Thunder label is fast approaching its tenth release and just before that mini milestone it offers up a couple of sublime dub and roots cover versions of some classic tunes. Errol Dunkley is first up on this 45rpm and adds his own spin to 'You Are My Sunshine' which is deep and loved up, with yearning vocals and whimsical harmonica leads. On the flip is a track that is just as deep cut and hazy with Zacharie Ksyk's version of 'Blowing In The Wind' making for heart melting sounds.

Review: Although since 2010 he has been a fully qualified mental health advisor living in the United States, back in the 70s , Wade "Jimmy" Dyce was a key original member of Cultural Roots. He was one of the four vocalists in the harmony group who worked with producer Donovan Germain and released several classics of the day on the Greensleeves label. Wade went it alone in the 80s and lay down some of his own jams with plenty of top musicians at Chris Stanley's famous Music Mountain studio. Now a bunch of them are getting pressed up to vinyl, including this one, the mighty 'Humble.'

Review: Before stepping out to do solo work, Wade "Jimmy" Dyce was a key original member of Cultural Roots. The vocalist was at the heart of the group's sound and is part of the reason the four-part harmony group had such success in the 1970s. They were produced by Donovan Germain and released several classics of the day on the Greensleeves label before Wade made his own jams in the 80s at Chris Stanley's famous Music Mountain studio. He did so with the best musical talents of the day and now some of them get reissued with his full blessing and compete with a unique Disco 45 cover graphic.

Review: The Purple Fade crew has assembled another crack team of dub heads for this fresh platter, 'Be Clean.' Fat Frog is the man charged with produciton duties and does a fine job laying down a killer rhythm with two brilliant vocals - the first is Danny Red who implores us all to be clean on the A-side, while on the flip it's Amelia Harmony who sings on 'Reach Out' and does so with a smoky and sultry tone. Both tunes of course come with slower and more spaced out dubs to complete a fine EP.

Marcia Griffiths - "Feel Like Jumping" (3:36)
Dub Specialist - "Feel Like Jumping" (part 2) (3:45)
Review: Stone cold classic alert! First released on Studio One back in the late 1970s and a guaranteed reggae floor-filler ever since, 'Feel Like Jumping' is not only one of Coxsone Dodd's most potent productions, but also one of Marcia Griffiths' greatest moments. Now available again on a heavyweight vinyl pressing with extra bass-weight, the track us built around an infectious rhythm, dancing horn riffs, sweet backing vocals and a life-affirming lead vocal from Griffiths' celebrating the sheer joy of dancing. The flipside Dub Specialist revision is superb too - a genuinely bone-shaking, sub-heavy dancefloor dub that places echoing snippets of Griffiths' lead vocal and reverberating horns at the heart of the action.

Review: Over the last four years, Idren Natural's Dubolution-produced 'Jah Garden' - a steppers-powered roots/digi-dub fusion cut featuring a superb lead vocal - has been a dubplate special in Inidica Dubs' DJ sets. It's fitting then that they've finally decided to release it on their own label, with the killer original mix being joined by a trio of tasty dubs. Dubolution's own dub-style version is faithfully weighty and skeletal, while wisely emphasizing his own jazzy guitar licks, while Indica Dubs' flipside revisions are equally as potent. The 'Garden Dubplate Mix' is a punchy, full-throttle dancefloor dub workout, while the 'Raw Dub Mix' sounds like one of Mad Professor's wilder, heavier offerings.

Here we get two crucial rhythms on a tidy new 45rpm. The first is Barry Issacs & Deemas J's 'Revolution Deh Yah' featuring George Dekker, a founding member of The Pioneers, the hit reggae group that had plenty of UK chart success. Review: Italiks and Deep Fried Dub team up to deliver Crown, a deep meditation on self-doubt and musical redemption. The release is the first studio collaboration from longtime friends Sam Cumming (Italiks) and Ben Dudding (Deep Fried Dub), with the former providing the rhythm and vocals, and the latter on mixing and melodica duties. With introspective lyrics born in the depths of a Fiordland forest, Crown considers the challenge of facing your inner demons and dealing with insecurity, ably assisted by the healing power of music. The result is a heavy roots cut that will soothe your soul while rattling your ribcage.
