Amami & Vibronics - "Wrong Way Dub" (3:15)
Review: Amami's 'Wrong Way' is a dub-infused track that exemplifies the genre's rich, immersive qualities. The song opens with a deep, resonant bassline that anchors the composition, while subtle percussion elements add a rhythmic complexity. The dub version on the B-side further enhances the track's atmospheric depth, offering a more stripped-back interpretation that allows the intricate soundscapes to emerge more prominently. The release underscores Amami's adeptness at blending traditional dub elements with contemporary production techniques, resulting in a track that is both rooted in the genre's history and forward-thinking in its execution.

Review: Black Carbon by Akae Beka featuring Chronixx delivers deep Jah vibes and chilled reggae rhythms that capture the soul of Jamaican life. On Side-1, the track unfolds smoothly, blending reggae and dub elements into a mesmerising sonic experience. The lyrics delve into profound themes, reflecting on societal issues and spiritual insights. On Side-2, the dub version amplifies the instrumental aspects, allowing listeners to immerse themselves in the rich layers of the music. Overall, Black Carbon is a captivating release that shows the talents of both artists and offers a refreshing take on contemporary reggae music.

Illusion (DJ Duckcomb Discomix) (7:38)
Review: Noted reggae vocalist Barry Biggs comes under the Emotional Rescue microscope here with celebrated LA digger Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb remixing one of his cuts. First up is the original version of 'Illusion' which has big pianos over the clean digital dub. The soaring vocal is obscured by plenty of lush effects and melodies. After a version twists and contorts the original, the DJ Duckcomb Discomix slows things down and ups the dazzling disco vibes but keeps the dub dubby bottom end to ensure plenty of dance floor impact. This is a classy one as ever from this label.

Botha Warning

Bionic Singer - "Botha Warning" (3:55)
Jamaazima All Star - "Warning To Botha" (3:31)
Review: 333 UK shed backscattered light on another late 1980s anti-apartheid reggae opus, Bionic Singer's 'Botha Warning'. Salvaged from the formerly seafloor dwelling chest that is the Jamaazima label back catalogue, 'Botha Warning' is a star riddim from the late great Osbert "Madoo" Maddo, who was brought up in East Kingston and as a child attended the legendary Alpha Boys School. Over his career he recorded mainly with Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson, and for Winston Riley's famous Techniques label. The Bionic Singer alias came later, after a move to New York from Jamaica and brief hiatus; releasing on the Bronx-based Jamaazima, 'Warning To Botha' is a bloodthirsty send for South Africa's then prime minister P.W. Botha, set to a sturdy bubbler backing - the track indicts his policies as a key cause for the brutal segregation of the period.

Our Thang (A Jorun Bombay remix) (3:59)
Phungry (A Jorun Bombay remix) (3:18)
Review: While we usually resist the idea of reworking perfect classics, Jorun Bombay masterfully enhances some originals here without losing their essence. This double-sided gem that effortlessly mixes up nostalgia with contemporary flair and it comes on nice coloured wax. This time, he revitalises a classic James Brown production, 'Our Thang' with fresh energy through added guitar, a lively trombone solo, and vibraphone. The second cut 'Phungry' ingeniously blends a seasoned 90s hip-hop cut with reggae-style vocals, all in the same key.

Phungry (A Jorun Bombay remix) (3:17)
Review: Beat maker extraordinary and hit king Jorun Bombay returns with another double-sided gem, this time in three different versions of coloured vinyl. As always, he blends nostalgic vibes with fresh 2024 energy on both cuts, starting with 'Our Thang,' in which he reinvents a classic James Brown production, adding funky guitar, trombone, and vibraphone. This instrumental rework gives the track a new lease of life, subtly enhancing a timeless classic while the flip side, 'Phungry,' fuses a 90s hip-hop favourite with reggae vocals. Both tracks showcase Jorun's mastery of enhancing originals without losing their essence.

Pachinco Man (Denham Audio remix) (4:19)
Review: Japanese reggae/dancehall artist Boogie Man embarked on a career in the early 90s, inspired by the prospect of filling an unfilled niche: adding humorous and bombastic lyrics to an internationally renowned genre he loved. The track 'Pachinco Man' is a tribute to pachinko, a popular arcade game in Japan that involves shooting metal balls into a machine. Much like the ballistics of such an unforgettable arcade fixture, the track flaunts Boogie Man's energetic vocals over an upbeat dancehall riddim, emphasising positivity and humour. Specialist Japanese dancehall like this is a great boon for the label Rhythm Discs!, who are now embarking on a full scouring and reissuing of the scene's best contributions.

Rockers (Ashigaru dub) (4:16)
Review: While Craig Bratley might be better known for his housier, disco-tinged output on labels like Tsuba, Instruments of Rapture and Futureboogie, on this release for new label Ashigaru he's indulging his love of digi-dub and dancehall by laying down the tuffest of riddims. 'Rocker' is a beast all by itself on the B-side 'Ashigaru Dub', but the deejay turn from Brother Culture on the mic for the full-fat version is what you want for a proper dose of dancehall swagger. True to the culture but also giving it a modern lick, it's a soundsystem heavyweight with one eye on carnival season.

Review: British producer Burland and Ghanaian vocalist Zongo Abongo join forces here for UK to GH, a new collaboration that collides the respective backgrounds of each artist. Reggae, highlife, dancehall, UK bass and rave all meet in a world of fresh rhythm and melodic invention. 'Telephone No Wire' opens with a feel-good highlife sound on a 2-step beat with vocalist Adotey Johnson in fine form. 'Nyura' heads to the club with weighty bottom ends and enchanting melodies then things get darker on the flip with 'Try To Test' exploring another take on 2-step with hints of UKG and grime overlaid with catchy vocal hooks. 'Last Chance' pairs dancehall vocals with downtempo breaks for a superb conclusion.

Love Will Tear Us Apart (dub Division mix) (3:44)
Review: There is no end of covers of this classic tune originally by the great Joy Division and to be honest most of them are pretty decent, including this one, which is a limited green vinyl version. Scottish production team Capitol 1212 serve up a killer reinterpretation with sublime vocal from Studio One / Dreadzone singer Earl Sixteen. As with many modern pop classics, it's as if the tune were destined for dub; Sixteen's vocals sound paradoxically original, as they're matched by eighth-note pedalizations of the song's melody. The 'Dub Division' mix, meanwhile, is even more smeared in delay, reverb, triggers and sirenny FX wobbles.

Review: Dubquake Records have got a hefty one on their hands here: O.B.F's 'Fufu Lala' is a seriously dangerous tune with great vocal work from featured artists Charlie P and Aza Lineage. The French sound system crew really step it up here and push dub in new directions with a heavy cross pollinated sound that takes in roots, grime and dancehall before spitting out the freshness. The Charlie P tracks are super personal works that are a precursor, so we hear, to a big new mixtape project. They find him taking aim at influentual music industry cats who are largely self serving, while some sweet remixes take care of the flip side.

Review: The latest entry in this series from the Dub Suty crew managed to nod to the roots of digital dub and dancehall while also very much looking to the future. It sees the label team up with a producer who lays down the beast while different vocalists step up to add their own twist to the sonics. Von D is the man on the buttons and he crafts a seriously weighty stepper that comes with horns, keys, guitars and of course some alluring bars. Reggae singers Chukki Starr, Chezidek, and Jah Mason all come correct with this positive, uplifting messages of unity.

Review: Any serious dancehall head will know that an original copy of this is seriously rare. It originates back in the late 80s and early 90s NYC scene van Cooly aka Koolindian aka Super Cat's cousin Andrew Maragh. It first Cameron his label Mad Indian Records but is now reissued by the excellent Death Is Not The End sub-label 333. 'Freedom' was written while the talented vocalist was in prison and details what he saw as the unfairness of the judicial system back then. Philip Smart is the man who laid down the rhythm that so ably carries the vocals. On the flip is a vision but it's the original that you need in your life.

Review: Shout out to the newly launched Onedub which opens its account here with a nice clean dancehall 12" that features Danman on 'Fussing N Fighting.' It has bright digital synth sounds and natty leads over airy, rubbery drums. The legendary Indica Dubs then step up for a hefty dub that becomes much more dark and menacing thanks to the sheer scale of the cavernous bass. Two further dubs take up the flip side for some melon twisting, sound system testing brilliance. This is a fine start to what is sure to become a label well worth following.

But it was worth the wait. The opener 'Cover Me' features Ruff's, well, slightly rough - or at least gravelly - vocals over a rhythm and bass instrumental. It's accented with wispy chords, neat little guitar riffs and crunchy claps. Flip it over and you'll find a remix by label founder The Rebel and Roman pianist and producer Shiny D. Their version is a modern update with brilliant reggaeton rhythms.

While he's previously released a fair number of EPs under a variety of aliases (Deejay Xanax, Dj Wey and Luis included), Brian Pinyero has only one DJ Python release to his name. Dude Compania, his first full-length under any pseudonym, is therefore something of a game-changer. It's rather fine, too, offering a leisurely stroll through attractively intergalactic deep house pastures in the company of tracks built around interesting, off-kilter drum patterns. Highlights are plentiful, from the glacial chords and aqueous melodies of vintage ambient house style shuffler "Todo Era Azul (Siempre Dub)" and atmospheric broken house workout "Acostados" (where field recordings of distant traffic rise above fluttering synthesizer loops and delicately programmed percussion), to the ultra-deep and positive brilliance of closer "Yo Ran (Do)".
