Anniversary Sampler 03
Cat: GST 24. Rel: 20 Apr 21
Anderson - "Stalactites" (7:13)
Long Island Soul - "Eleventh Hour Exchange" (5:12)
Baby Rolen - "Metallic Humanoids" (5:59)
Abdul Raeva - "Celestial Body" (Venus mix) (6:38)
Review: Gestal is leading the way in the Estonian scene and now it rightly continues its anniversary celebrations with a third volume of vital VA cuts. Anderson opens proceedings with his 'Stalactites,' a nice leggy electro cut with a heavy drum and bass combo but plenty of astral details. Things get more kinetic and travel much further from the blue planet on the superbly slick and serene cut from Long Island Sound, while Baby Rolen gets down and dirty on twisted bass and slapping drum hits that make you jerk. There is a much more dreamy vibe to Abdul Raeva's 'Celestial Body' meaning things close on a perfect emotional note.

Ootheca (7:29)
Symetrix (6:17)
Prophecy (5:56)
Review: Haws is heading towards a quarter of a century of releases and does so in style with this fine blend of techno and prog sounds from B From E. 'Ootheca' is one that turns our ear with its mid tempo drums and future cosmic chords layered up next to lush arps and plenty of swirling sci-fi details. 'Symetrix' is a more intense cut with psychedelic overtones and subtle waves of euphoria washing over you. Last but not least is 'Prophecy' which is a more deep and heady vibe but still one lit up with widescreen synth work and nice neon colours.

Automated Reply (6:18)
OOO (6:28)
Review: London-based Leo Picking, better known as Baby Rollen, presents his latest release on Not For You, following previous releases on Feelings Worldwide, Magic Carpet, and his own Slump Recordings. The two tracks on the release are inspired by retro sounds, showcasing Picking's ability to create dancefloor weapons that blend different eras of electronic music.

On the A-side, 'Automatic Reply' delivers uplifting trance euphoria, complete with strobe-inducing moments that will transport you to another dimension. The track's infectious energy is sure to get bodies moving and hands in the air. Meanwhile, the flip side brings us 'OOO', a journey through breakbeats, acid, and classic Stateside house sounds, all masterfully blended into one cohesive and infectious track. Overall, Baby Rollen continues to impress with his unique style and diverse musical influences on this latest release.

Bom Bang!
Rubber Band
Break The Rules
Beaming
Review: Vinyl sampler from John Digweed's long running Bedrock imprint to accompany what is, amazingly, the first album from Marco Bailey in seven years. Whilst the album sees the veteran Belgian flex his production muscle with a set of tracks that veer between downtempo and the more usual tough dancefloor cuts, this sampler very much focuses on the latter. Proceedings commence with the Moroder-ish hedonism of "Bom Bang!", characterised by menacing arpeggiated bass that rises and drops in all the right places. Alongside this are the rubbery main-room jack funk of "Rubber Band", the driving tropical thump of "Break The Rules" and the twisted acid freakery of "Beaming". All this means you'll have to indulge in the album proper to hear "Bill The Trumpet Player" - a deliciously jazzy stomper that recalls Garnier's "The Man With The Red Face".

Ride The Night (Jennifer Loveless remix) (5:51)
Ride The Night (5:35)
Review: Barcelona mainstay Baldo originally released 'Ride The Night' as part of digital single Saturdays Come And Gone on Permanent Vacation in 2022. As a fierce and fabulous homage to Hi-NRG, it showed the most muscular, nocturnal side of Baldo's sound and the track took on a life of its own. Now the label have decided to give the track more prominence with this heavyweight vinyl remix package, which kicks off in style with a suitably throbbing workout from Red Axes before switching to the strutting big room style of Alex Neri. Jennifer Loveless zeroes in to the sensual heart of the track with a thrumming low end and a powerful command of the tension in the track, leaving it to Baldo's original to close the EP out in style.

This new release - 'Your Life' from Barcelos - has a nice feeling, not too dark but not too soft either. The Jay Barcelos's

Cosmonaut (6:11)
Domino (5:35)
Equilibrium (7:14)
Neptune Sunrise (7:10)
Review: Butter Side Up started as a party in Leeds, then made a successful move to London, then also became a label which has so far proved to be just as popular with the real heads of the underground scene. Every EP gets lapped up and this sixth one is not about to spoil that track record. It's a fresh four tracker from Basement Space that opens with the rugged electro-techno sounds of 'Cosmonaut.' Things get more silky smooth on 'Domino' which is a perfect bit of 90s tinged tech house with cosmic references and sci-fi motifs. 'Equilibrium' opens up the flip with more well crafted breakbeats and balmy pad work before the most spaced out breaks of them all take 'Neptune Sunrise' off into some future world. Lovely stuff.

Basement Space & Mans Glaeser - "Spacer Glaezer" (6:01)
Eric OS - "Timeout" (5:11)
Baby Rollen - "TwentyTwenty Home" (8:23)
Anna Kohlin - "What Time Is It?" (7:06)
Review: A releaser that crackles with an energy that could only emanate from the shadowy corners of the Swedish electronic underground. Anna Kohlin, label co-head and architect of hypnotic soundscapes, guides us through a diverse sonic landscape, her own 'What Time Is It?' leading the charge. Built from the evocative textures of the Roland JV-1080, it shimmers with a sunrise glow, ethereal pads interweaving with delicate melodies. Kohlin, a master of contrasts, doesn't shy away from the shadows, injecting her creation with sharper, dynamic elements that add a touch of grit to the dreamlike atmosphere. Eric OS throws down a challenge with 'Timeout', a sonic time capsule that transports us back to the early 2000s. Analogue warmth collides with the raw energy of digital sound, vintage synths intertwining with crisp beats in a nostalgic yet undeniably fresh sonic tapestry. Baby Rollen, armed with a looped double bass sample and the crisp snap of a 909, crafts a hypnotic groove with 'TwentyTwenty Home'. A warm 303 bassline snakes through the mix, adding a touch of acid-tinged euphoria to the already infectious rhythm. Basement Space and Mans Glaeser, never ones to shy away from the unconventional, deliver 'Space Glaezer', a sonic maze that twists and turns through intricate textures and unexpected rhythmic shifts. Kohlin's curation is nothing short of masterful, showcasing the diverse and ever-evolving landscape of the Swedish electronic music scene. Inside Out 002 is a testament to the power of electronic music to transport, inspire, and defy expectations.

Review: The man himself, bassrock gets the re-rub from two of the hottest acts in breaks at the moment, Baobinga and the dark and devious D-Ranged. Baobinga takes the root of hard floor breaks, with solid pounding beats and rawkus bass progressions. One definitely not to be missed. Review: In the A Side "Return" shows Baunder is true style. A basic but solid beat, a massive bassline, twisted electro synths, and a filtered synth line are the backbone of this track. Vocal snippets and FX are cleverly used to deliver this peaktime monster. Already gaining support from Hernan Cattaneo & D-Formation, this track is bound to make it big in dancefloors all around the world. On the flip side "Roots", wicked minimal beats, punchy bass & twisted synths, lead this track towards a rather large breakdown, where chord stabs and a trippy acid line are brought in.

Review: As you will very well know for yourself if you are interested enough in dance music to be reading this: trance is back, and it has been for a while. Pure trance, techno-trance, acid-trance, it's all to be heard everywhere you listen. But excuse us for showing our age and getting all boomer on you because none of it can hold a lighter to the original classics such as this one from BBE. 'Seven Days And One Week' is pure Ibiza, pure trance, pure melodic euphoria with sensuous vocals that make it all the more effective. Review: The peak-hour insanity doesn't quit on this record, with the a-side getting right down to business on Aldo C's remix, a hypnotic percussive builder that uses some urgent synths and electro basslines to heighten the dancefloor energy. What can we say about the Austin Leeds mix on the flip? Pure perfection from this rising star - dark, driving and tripped-out main house that packs a tremendous peak-hour punch. Couldn't Sleep (Shiloh remix)
Review: Ludmilla has been one of the most successful and most versatile female breakbeat DJs for the last 9 years in Europe. In long time partnership with Beatman (creating the Beatman & Ludmilla formation), they have dozens of international releases and movie soundtracks under their belts. Their distinctive style got into shape by more than one thousand DJ appearances and live shows all across Europe (Hungary, Poland, Germany, Austria, and Romania). The Beatman & Ludmilla sound is identifiable by the adaptation of the classical instrumentation and the progressive, more dance-orientated breakbeats. On the A-Side , we have the original mix which starts as trance , but then surprises us with some tasty breakbeats to put the track up a tempo. On the flip Shilo does the remix which is a very tasty electro - progressive number. Their works were retouched by the biggest names such as Aquasky vs Masterblaster, Backdraft, Shiloh - just name a few. These tracks were released on the scene's hippest labels like Aurium Recordings (Max Graham, Ozgur Can, Benz and MD), Vinyl Addiction Breaks (Fingerlickin's sister label), Cut'n'Run (UK no1 bootleg label), I-Lectrik, CHI, or Positiva's Medcab bootleg-imprint.

On the flip, Leon Boiler's Precursor remix needs no introduction, as Leon's Precursor tag has basically become de rigeur for massive tracks on State of Trance, Spinnin', Armada, Blackhole, etc; This remix is a deep techy late nighter with a throbbing bass pattern and cool variation on the main riff that still manages to fire off on more cylinders that your average starfighter jet.

The victim of horrible scalping, it's well overdue for a rerelease. 'Fun-K' is the highlight, showing off producer Bhasmantam's (Gieuseppe Pol's) sensitive and detail-oriented trance production chops, straddling euphoria and technicality in a manner that does not alienate or confuse. The remaining tunes are more breathable and minimal affairs, but all build a world that captivate as they do enthrall.
