Argy - "How Late It Was, How Late" (5:05)
Markus Fix - "Baroon" (7:19)
Jimi Jules - "Euphrasia" (8:15)
Review: This fine EP gathers together four previously unreleased exclusives from the latest edition of Cocoon's Dots & Pearls series, which was mixed by Markus Fix. His contribution to the EP, "Baroon" - a kind of contemporary re-imagining of the original 1988 version of The KLF's "What Time Is Love" with extra TB303 acid lines - is undoubtedly one of the highlights, alongside the ethereal melodies and early morning fuzz of Argy's intoxicating "How Late It Was, How Late". Elsewhere, Christian Burkhardt peppers a rolling house groove with boisterous but blissful stabs on "Karambolage", and Jimi Jules serves up a loose and languid take on the foreboding, stretched-out Innervisions tech-house sound ("Euphrasia").

Countach (7:42)
Countach (Kolsch remix) (7:28)
Review: Sometimes it feels a little like Bulent "Butch" Gurler is collecting record labels in the way school kids collect football stickers. This release sees him notch up a release on Cocoon for the first time, allowing him to affix the shiny, holographic label logo into his discography alongside such top-tier imprints as Trapez, Watergate, Rekids, Visionquest and Hot Creations. "Countach" is arguably one of his most positive and sun-kissed releases to date, with the action focusing on waves of rising and falling synthesizer arpeggio lines, rising electronic orchestration and spine-tingling motifs. Kompakt Extra regular Rune Reilly Kolsch retains some of this fluttering melodiousness on his flipside remix, combining key melodic phrases with more energetic beats and a raw new bassline of his own.

After Love
Review: Bedrock and Kinky Vinyl artist Guy Gerber returns for his 2nd outing on Cocoon alongside Shlomi Aber, giving you a pair of deep electronic house tracks championed by Digweed, Nathan Fake and James Holden to name a few. 'After Love' works a deceptively simply melody and hypnotic tweaks and bassline stabs, very much in the Border Community vein. The flip 'Sea Of Sand' will flood you in its deep, bottomless soundscapes, surging sub bass and trancey keyboard overlays.

Over The Water (10:14)
Review: The UK's Tim Green made it big in the late noughties minimal boom with big tracks on respected imprints like Four:Twenty, Dirtybird and of course Cocoon who present us with his new one titled Among Wolves. The tile track is the kind of emotive and melodic tech house that's bound to prick up ears and get feet moving in any situation; there's some real rich synth work on this one but just wait until that Frankie Knuckles style melody comes creeping in. Also of note is "Over The Water" which is darker and funkier. More suited to the earlier hours of the evening to set the mood but equally as emotive and with high production values.

Review: British producer Tim Green is still at it. After making his splash on the scene several years on respected imprints such as Trapez, Dirtybird and Get Physical with his highly technical minimal grooves, his profile has reached another plateau as seen by this release on Sven Vath's vanguard Cocoon. First up is "Eclipse" with its warped, monster bassline and mesmerising synth work flowing all over the place that'd appeal to all the Border Community heads. On the flip we have "Thieves" going for a more standard tech house groove, getting some nice synth pads happening over a pumping peak time groove.

Loving (remixes)

The Ace (Butch remix)
Loving (Mark Broom Soul mix)
Twentythree (Gregor Tresher remix)
Review: An essential part of the German Techno scene for more than fifteen years now, Johannes Heil is now in better shape than ever. With his eighth studio album "Loving", Heil draws both a modern and traditional balance of his life from and for the music, and thus sets one of the undisputed musical highlights this year. vWith this exclusive remix package, Cocoon Recordings is even topping that one: the Mainz-born Bülent Gürler aka Butch is known as one of the most versatile German Tech House producers, at least since his club smasher "No Worries". In his version of "The Ace", the perfect open air hymn for the modern House generation is emerging from a flute-like summer harmony. An essential contributor to the British Techno scene since the beginning of the nineties is Mark Broom. His Soul Mix of "Loving" combines the melancholy of Detroit techno with Ibiza House dubs and powerful handclaps, forming an intensive homage to the sensuality of the dance floor. Last not least, Gregor Tresher is celebrating the return of the melody with his remix of "Twentythree", after having released some stricter records for Break New Soil and Drumcode. The digital edition of the Loving remixes is completed by three more revisions: Amsterdam-based Bart Skils massively stresses the bass membrane with his pumping version of "Loving", while Mark Broom is pushing further into the depths of the Balearic Dub surge with his second Soul Mix. With "Seeded", the Cocoon Club House duo C-Rock/Matthias Vogt aka Motorcitysoul is finally exploring the occasionally menacing deepness of the House area with vibrating percussions and disco strings, just in the manner of their releases for Simple Records and Ibadan. After all, love wants to be shared.

Shh Remixes EP
Cat: COR 12073. Rel: 14 Apr 10
Blood Of Barcelona (Pan-Pot remix)
Never Ending Mountain (Egbert remix)
Review: Phil Kieran returns to Cocoon with an EP of remixes from his Shh album of last year. Featuring reworks from Pan-Pot, Egbert and Patrick Kunkel amongst others, the EP takes on six tracks off the album, delivering new versions for 2010.

Having previously flexed his more minimal tech house muscles on two singles for the Frankfurt based label, Kieran unleashed his first artist album under his own name in September of last year. Shh was a particularly broad minded affair that showcased his diverse set of influences, earning the accomplished Irishman much praise. Now, Cocoon delve back into the album with a clutch of excellent and equally diverse remixes.

Pan-Pot, the Berlin based duo who have also released on Mobilee and SCI + TEC, open the EP with a reductionist rework of "Blood of Barcelona." It has a subsonic feel, with deep synth stabs piercing through a simple yet bouncy bassline. Ingo Boss also take on the same track at the end of the EP, instead turning it into a pumping club track. The strong beat leads the way as glitch tech FX play out the rest of the track. In between, rising Dutch talent Egbert morphs a hypnotic bassline into a beautiful and uplifting dub track on his remix of "Never Ending Mountain" before Patrick Kunkel turns the same track into a pumping hybrid of techno and dub that somehow keeps the harmonic feel of the original. Matador exercises a minimal wig out on "Dirt" and Kevin Gorman gets things dark, pumping and irresistibly groovy on "Playing With Shadows."

Phil Kieran's original album showed just how versatile and diverse techno can be today. Fittingly then, this remix EP goes on to show even more imagination and creativity, throwing off the shackles of functional techno and exploring the genre's musicality to the max.

Wasps Under A Toy Boat (Planetary Assault Systems remix) (8:22)
Missp (Tom Demac remix) (7:21)
Review: To give you a little bit of context, Belfast's Phil Kieran has been producing effective, floor-ready techno since the turn of the millennium, and he's appeared on many 'above the line' labels such as Skint and Scotland's Soma. The spritely dance specialist lands on Sven Vath's larger-than-life Cocoon Recordings, but only in a cameo role as the original producer of "Pkrmxd". The two sides of the record are given to Planetary Assault Systems and Tom Demac, respectively. The former contorts "Wasps Under A Toy Boat" into a driving, hypnotic beast that is tailor-made for the dance floor, while the latter transforms "Missp" into a jagged, electro house bomb with a steady 4/4 beat but that unleashes a grizzly load of bass. Just like the old days - thank you!

Crush On Me
Push Me
Review: With a large number of releases on prestigious labels such as Dumb Unit, Steve Bug's Audiomatique platform and more recently as Maceo Plex on Crosstown Rebels, it's fair to say that Eric Estornel aka Maetrik is carving a high reputation for himself within underground electronic music. Sven Vath's Cocoon has now snapped up Maetrik for this two track release. "Crush On Me" serves up an atmospheric groove with warped vocals and mysterious pockets of sound dropping bombs over the slow churning rhythm. Intricately constructed and constantly endearing, Maetrik only secures his rep with this wonderfully moody piece. On the flip is "Push Me", an equally Cocoon style mind trip with what is fast becoming Eric's 'signature' of deep and gruff spoken vocals. A deadly beat rolls with determination, pushing ever forward and complimenting reverbed samples and crisp claps. Hypnotic and trippy, powerful and spell binding, "Push Me" takes Juno's pick as favourite of this release.

Nothing Is Lost
Review: Swedish duo Markus Henriksson and Sebastian Mullaert return to Cocoon with The Island Of If, an apparent parting gift in the form of a three track 12" to their fans before the Minilogue project enters a period of dormancy so that they can focus on their solo careers. Nudging in at just under 12 minutes, the title track is nonetheless epic in scale and arrangement, and a continuation of the approach Henriksson and Mullaert took on their last LP for Cocoon. Slip the orange and black marbled vinyl over and "Nothing Is Lost" is dominated by the hypnotic acid line that fluctuates with intensity over the course of 14 minutes that could go on forever.

Alpha Blend
Review: In Tuomas Salmela (aka Phonogenic), we welcome one of the most established Finnish techno and house producers,
with releases on 2020 Vision, Poker Flat, Moodmusic and F-Com-munications. Salmela's sound has something dark,
reminiscent of long Finnish winters and cold nights. He does not pose the question of oldskool or newskool, but simply
has produced something really new without getting lost in clicks'n'cuts or doing too much sound research. Phonogenic
uses sentimental harmonies and stringent direct beats, that don't need complex building arrangements, but come to the
point rather quickly and make clear where the journey will take us. Similar to Guy Gerber, Phonogenic's productions also
are somewhere in between techno and house and even use elements of trance. However, Salmela's productions always
make the impression of being well planned and moody.

Sly Detector
Review: Igor Tchkotoua and Dan Duncan are true workaholics. Not only do the two Mallorquinos form one of the most exciting
techno duos of our time and play in the most famous clubs worldwide, they always manage to pop up in the studio to
work on their releases on Sonic Society, Wig Records or like in the case of 'Deliverance', the new 12" on Cocoon.
'Deliverance' starts quite cautiously but the track becomes more and more complex. Pig & Dan give the DJ a tool that
fits the minimal raver like a custom-made suit. The b-side is again one of those tracks that puts a smile on your face.
In 'Sly Detector', atmospheric techno sounds unite with energetic celebration pleasure, just as we know it from tracks
like 'After Ibiza' or 'On To The Beat'. The rolling hookline which has the necessary splash of acid is, together with the
floating trance layer, adrenalising to such an extent that nothing else remains to be done but to raise your hands in the
air. The track was already a hit with many DJs in 2007, and will be huge in '08!

Tanz Der Teufel
Review: Poland's Adam Proll (aka Adam Kroll) is already well known for his signature tech house sound that he's been perfecting mainly on the Traum label for the last few years. Now he breaks out even further with this amazing new track for Cocoon, a Holden-esque slice of bass-heavy tech house pressure that surprises you with splashes of 80s house sounds, random 303 bass and fuzzy electro sounds. Once you think you know where he's going with it out pops another change up and the pressure builds and builds again. For the B-side Adam prepares 'Tanz Der Teufel' which has a more pronounced sawtooth lead and thick Juno 106-style sounds that make this a true techno monster in the style of DBX and Zombie Nation.

Rampa - "2000" (6:17)
Emanuel Satie - "Departure" (5:52)
Solomun - "We'll Never Have Today Again" (7:39)
Review: Cocoon Recordings has long been one of big room techno's most visible labels. Of course, the Ibiza party it has hosted for much of that time has helped win it a global audience, but it is always well deserved. To mark the anniversary Sven's label is putting out a series of special EPs. The first opens with longtime associate Ramp offering some tense but melodic tech that undulates nicely.

Emanuel Satie follows up with more lithe electronic melodies on 'Departure' and then one of hosu music's biggest names, Solomun, keeps it simple but effective with his synth laden, hands in the air cut 'We'll Never Have Today Again.'

Review: For Fans of Luciano and Pier Bucci. With "Goodbye", Jacek Sienkiewicz is presenting himself in top form. Newschool Microhouse on eye height with productions of Solidgroove, Jesse Rose or Renato Figoli, equipped with a cool kickin' LoFi aesthetics and a lot of swing in the groove. The rolling beats, with bell-like synth sounds and hypnotic snares, beam every Techno and House floor into another dimension. "Goodluck" is likewise DJ tool and prime time joker. With this track, Jacek again proves his class and flexibility - with this sound, the upcoming Live Acts promise to be really big. "Goodluck" comes along a lot more dreamy and playful, with long harmony parts and a wide arrangement, that is the perfect soundtrack for a sunrise and gives a small musical outlook on the Spring approaching.

Review: SIS, aka Burak Sar slots perfectly into the Cocoon family with this new two tracker of hypnotic techno. The title track is a trip through vesting, echoing chambers that lose themselves within the depths of reverb. Long beatless interludes and ethereal vocals precede drops of clunky, tribal drums. Dos
Review: At 35 years old, Frank Lorber carries a wealth of experience within electronic music. Inextricably linked to Sven Vath's Cocoon imprint, he returns to the label alongside Bernd Maus and Erik Besier as Tres to deliver an EP of four tracks of big room, deep tech infused with all the FX and sweeps that we have come to expect from this trio. Cocoon Recordings has been a staple in Lorber’s career. In 2002, his second album, Jailhouse Rocker was one of the first artist albums to be released on the then newly formed label. Now truly global and instantly recognisable, Cocoon release the collaborative work of Lorber, 2Dollar Egg member Eric Besier and Bernd Maus who is also co-owner of Freebase, one of Germany's most successful record shops. Opening with "Uno," the EP delves deep into subsonic rhythm. Tribal percussion is layered on top of low end bass and distorted vocals. It is bouncy techno that takes a more stripped down form, announcing the release in slick style. "Dos" is more playful, with more harmonies and lighter percussive patterns. A rolling basslines adds funk as the track chugs along in its own groove. Taking things deeper and darker is "Tercero," which brings a dub influence into the trio’s tribal techno. Again using distorted vocals, the futuristic feel of this release remains present without getting lost in FX and glitch. Finishing the EP is the mind bending "Cuarto." Wrapped around morphing synths, the 4/4 beat and deep, menacing bassline creates an uneasy atmosphere. Music that you can really get lost in, both "Cuarto" and the EP as a whole, explore the different atmospheres in which a groove can manifest itself within.

Still, the party goes on and this time out the second celebratory EP features a trio of talents closely associated with the label. Gregor Tresher's 'Nostalgia (Is The Enemy)' is a nimble house cut with quickened drums and subtle trance pads. Joseph Ashworth then serves up a more late night and angsty techno twister for big room thrills with his dramatic 'Eavesdrop.' Harlequin: The Beauty & The Beast (Tuff City Kids remix)
Review: Papa Vath is 50 and what better way for the Cocoon boss to celebrate than open his archives and let the highly respected Ame and Tuff City Kids remix two Sven classics. The fact that many Cocoon fans these days were probably too young to remember "L'Esperanza" or "Harlequin: The Beauty & The Beast" at the time of their original release is an irony that won't be lost on Vath and perhaps those unfamiliar with his early '90s work will be moved to investigate after hearing these remixes. As you'd expect Ame are on suitably epic form with their take on "L'Esperanza" but don't gloss over Gerd Janson and Lauer's bumping refix of "The Beauty & The Beast" cos it's got some great space style fx amidst the thrusting throwback rave vibes.

Review: Frankfurt icon, hotelier, vinyl enthusiast and Cocoon overseer Sven Vath has done it all yet remains on top of his game. This latest 12" from Cocoon is an interesting exercise indeed, with two early '90s Vath classics presented to KiNK and Kolsch for a 21st Century makeover. Bulgarian hardware but KiNK is handed the task of reworking the title cut from Vath's 92 debut LP Accident In Paradise and turns in a nine minute concoction of bubbling, trance-laden machine funk madness. Not to be outdone Kompakt's Danish correspondent Kolsch tackles "Robot" from 1994 album The Harlequin, The Robot And The Ballet-Dancer and delivers a right chunky remix that loses none of the original's synthetic goofiness.

Review: What do you get when you cross the boompty-era grooves of Derrick Carter, the wonky late-night textures of tech-house, and the party-friendly attitude of Hot Creations? Pretty much "Freeks", the latest missive from Leeds-based producer Waff. The title track - a bumpin' roller drive forward by a deliciously simple bassline and catchy vocal sample - is joined by "Groover", a tougher, more obviously tech-tinged outing that sounds like an old Music For Freaks jam, crossed with the skewed late night vibes of Crosstown Rebels. Like the A, it's an appealing sound that should appeal to a wide range of DJs.

Review: Mr Dominik Eulberg is maybe one of the oddest characters in techno and house nowadays - but also one of the nicest and most down-to-earth producers within the last years. Like no one else, he combines sound and art research with solid and straight productions, which attract fans from all fields such as techno, house and even trance. The young man from the Westerwald alternates between straight-in-your-face humour and very profound approaches, musically as well as design-wise in word and image. "Bionik" is an explosive Cocoon Records release.

Review: After impressing the heads with two intriguing albums on BAR25, German producer Matthias John pops up on Cocoon with this third full-length. The Keys is a curiosity, in many ways, as it's far more melodically upbeat and noticeably warmer than much of Cocoon's output. Musically, it takes the 4/4 rhythms of deep house and techno as its base, layering up shuffling rhythms of all manner of fuzzy synths, curious old electric pianos and woozy electronics. It's a formula that regularly makes for entertaining listening, even at its oddest (and the vocal contributions on "The Interview (Part 1)" and "The River" are definitely strange).

Review: Ever loyal to their Cocoon homebase, Minilogue are back with their second album after 2008's sprawling Animals, and once again it's a bombastic affair taking in both functional club concerns and outright ambient listening, with a clear split down the middle. Vinyl lovers still get the ambient tracks in CD form, reserving the wax space for the bangers in this new set. Blomma sports the hallmarks of classic Minilogue production, from ethereal harmonies to elegant rhythmic constructions that serve to support the music rather than define it. There's arguably a move towards crustier synth sounds on tracks such as "Atoms With Curiosity That Looks At Itself & Wonder Why It Wonders", but this still comes rendered in the classic warm minimal tones that Minilogue have built their name on.
