The Rapture Pt III (B-STOCK)
Cat: KM 066 (B-STOCK). Rel: 01 Jan 90
&ME & Black Coffee - "The Rapture Pt III" (8:06)
&ME - "LIFE" (7:35)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Creased sleeve, warped record***

&Me and Black Coffee make for something of an Afro house dream team here. The latter has long been this sound's pin-up and has gone from playing in South African townships to producing with Beyonce and winning Grammy Awards over the last decade. Now deep in his latest Ibiza season, he unveils collaborative track 'The Rapture' (Pt III), a deep rolling cut with spine-tingling chords and a rich atmosphere. &ME then goes solo for 'LIFE', a shuffling percussive groove with spoken words and enchanting chords to make for a classy two-tracker.

Bad Sector (Miles Ellis remix) (5:38)
Space Draft (Karaba remix) (6:15)
Review: Accented Measures Series (AMS) is a still relatively new series that has been compiled and arranged by Accented Measures and is designed to deal in unreleased and new music from some of the scene's key names. The Space Drift Remixes EP is next up the series with a combination of 90s vibes and modern grooves. '97NY' (TC80 remix) is heads down and raw as you like tech. 'Aeons' (Pedro Goya remix) rather spins you out on more silky cosmic pads and the Miles Ellis remix of 'Bad Sector' is thudding tech with rigid drums and washes of sugary synth. 'Space Draft' (Karaba remix) begins some serenity and smoothness to the final cut.

Mutul & David Read - "Breathe" (Pablo Bolivar Remake) (7:02)
Review: German label and once-cult club Bar 25 is making its 200th release with a series of remixes. The EP comes in different formats with this being a limited edition purple marbled 12" with a special postcard included. Aiwaska's 'Tip' delivers a dark and driving energy, setting a fine tone for the release from the off. Meanwhile, Omeria's remix of Kaiser Waldon takes a deeper approach, creating a rich and immersive soundscape. Fake Mood & Dibidabo's 'Coconan' receives a textured and chugging transformation with Nicone's Acid Disco Nana remix. Finally, Pablo Bolivar's remake brings a dubbed-out sense of deepness and rounds out the collection with his signature touch.

Review: Cult German club Bar 25 had a great spot down by the river and an organic, boho vibe. It has long since carried that over into its label which deals in contemporary minimal from a wide range of producers. The rather incredible 200th release is now here and is a various artists affair that starts with Aiwaska's 'Tip' which is dark and driving. Elsewhere an Omeria remix of Kaiser Waldon is more deep and Fake Mood & Dibidabo's 'Coconan' gets a textured and chugging Nicone Acid Disco Nana remix. Last but not least is a Pablo Bolivar Remake with dubbed-out deepness.

Catacombs2 (12:29)
Globus (8:53)
Review: The most surprising release this week comes from Thomas Melchior's newly inaugurated My King Is Light label, presenting its sophomore release courtesy of veteran U.S. producer Amir Alexander. The Vanguard Sound main man isn't usually known for his minimal house exploits, but sure proves his talent for it here on the 'Wisdom' EP. A side "Catacombs2" treads along a ghostly trail similar to Melchior's own work, with all its deep and hypnotic elements aimed squarely at the afterhours dancefloor. On the flip, we have the lean and subtle groove of "Globus" which continues with the arcane and 'magickal' vibes; its bouncy melodic bass works your feet, while the warped/operatic vocal tones flip your mind!

Review: Alich's take on house is kinetic and restless. It's ever on the move so is perfect for keeping dancers guessing as it draws on electro, minimal and tech for its vibes. This new one on Griffe is a future facing EP packed with cosmic colour. Find Your Quest (Orion Talis mix) kicks off with some high-intensity drum loops and lashing synths while 'Reinhardt' (Djangoes dub) has glistening leads and funky drum patterns. 'Wicked Force Path' is a jacked up and percussive number with liquid bass and closer 'Distance' has broad synth smears that dose you in vibes.

Chair Fix (10:27)
Digerital (6:14)
Klenkl (6:44)
Review: Rob Amboule makes a compelling debut on Raum... musik with his 'Digerital' EP, offering a fusion of minimal, techno, and progressive trance. The three tracks exhibit Amboule's mature musical ideas and finely tuned production skills, with 'Chairfix' setting expectations with its hypnotic intro morphing into stompy, pulsating techno, evoking a state of rave euphoria and the title track offering a more banging four-to-the-floor techno with atmospheric elements and nods to acid and progressive trance. Closer 'Klenkl', meanwhile, continues the hypno heady grooves and arrangements. Amboule pays homage to the golden age of ravey techno and trance, reinterpreting these genres for modern audiences. Raum... musik's 117th release solidifies its reputation as a quality label for introducing fresh talent and pushing boundaries in electronic music.

5AM (5:59)
Review: UK tech house legend Mark Ambrose is now back with a third volume of his The Journey series on Richard Davis' reissue label Repeat. The revered veteran crafted plenty of the genre's best and most unique sounds and you can revisit three of them now. 'Acid' is a slow, deep and meandering monster with rubbery bass and undulating 303 lines. 'The Ghoulash Monster From Outer Space' is a more dark and tribal, chunky and sci-fi sound with rich sound designs and eerie atmospheres and '5 AM' closes on a serene deep tech groove. Ricardo Villalobos, Sonja Moonear and Marcel Dettmann are just some of the names who have played these jams over the years, which is a testament to their quality.

Octave & Nicolas Duvoisin - "Wanna Be Down" (6:53)
Zenk - "Dreaming In A Shell" (7:53)
Review: Purple Print has become a strong player in the minimal scene in a short space of time, with the likes of Sepp, Delaj, Bisharat and Vid all offering their considerable wares into the growing catalogue since 2021. Their compilation 12" was just as on-point in 2023, and now they're back with a second volume which is not to be missed. Avidel leads the way with the seductive, vocal laced groover 'Someone', while Lukea follows up with a dub techno-tinted workout entitled 'Crescent Moon'. Octave and Nicolas Duvoisin do some smart r&b sampling for undulating roller 'Wanna Be Down' and Zenk creates a sparkling sunrise reverie with 'Dreaming In A Shell', a stripped back but detailed and distinctive workout which ends the record on a high note.

Antelia (8:26)
Review: Turkish producer Barut debuts four new minimal tech tools for Sintope's offshoot vinyl series. The 'Antelia' EP starts out functionally enough, but grows increasingly dreamy and awestruck as it progresses. We begin with the expository FM funk of 'Ilanto Zur', but before long find ourselves submerged in the far larger, nigh-gargantuan stellar planes of 'Ramana'. Finally, closer 'Antelia' is a relative curveball in sound compared to the earlier tunes, deftly working in ethereal vocal improv and swelling Vangelis pads into a beautiful electrance sendoff.

This release is a four-track feast of forward-thinking techno, bass, and unexpected dance delights. 'Fatzer' stands out with its high-energy minimal techno, paying homage to mid-90s techno with breakbeat influences. This track is a vibrant nod to an era where breaks reigned supreme. Other highlights include: 'Omuera Bamba' that blends techno, house and fun, delivering an energetic and eclectic mix that embodies Batenko's flirty, freaky mastery. New Jersey-born Ali Berger is a drum machine specialist and low-key US electronic music standby, now based in Pittsburgh after spending the 2010s in Boston and Detroit. His catalog of original music runs deep, with over 60 releases on his Trackland label and EPs on imprints like Spectral Sound and Sequencias, all resulting from a lovingly-cultivated studio approach which respects improvisation as a spiritual practice. Here with this sublime release on Scissors and Thread, Serious, Berger collects tracks "from the last three years, plus 0221 (Serious Mix) from 2018", portraying the pursuit of an art form (techno, house) that demands that one take oneself seriously, whilst also periodically calling that sense of self-seriousness into question. As stated by Berger, there is a sense of deep melancholy that runs throughout the record, whether on the watery functions of 'Tape Jam (Pt. 2)' or the sparse synth-keyed movements of 'A New World To Forget'; they seem to reflect the feeling of happily pensive dog days, of arriving at new insights that wouldn't have been discovered had one not endured them.

Review: Jake Childs gets a welcomed reissue of his still hot 'Game EP' from 2006. This record is full of retro Chicago-style tracks that showcase his signature stripped-back jackers. Side-1 features 'Good Times,' a track that starts simply but evolves with a bumping bassline, bleeps and squelches. Its choppy, jacking beats, punchy snares, gritty synths, and rolling bass create a dancefloor powerhouse, flipping midway for a roof-raising moment. On Side-2 brings 'Beat Machine,' an eerie blend of house and pop, with moody synths, growling sub-bass, and haunting vocals from Lil Prince. Included and not on the original is the new Baldov remix of 'Typical of You' which adds extra heat, making this release a strongest reissues in recent weeks.

Review: The Jooice label returns with regular artist Deyayu on four more raw minimal cuts. 'Sexual Desire' pairs nagging synth leads the burrow deep with slinky tech house drums. There is more zip to 'Mental Effect' which flashes with cosmic melody as dystopian tension rises up from below. 'The Light Device' has a more playful edge and a disco-tech feel with its balmy pads and last but not least is the 80s-referencing electro cruise that is 'Modern Primitive' with its squelchy acid bassline. All four of these bring plenty of synth craft and cosmic freshness to the party.

Review: De La Isla EP marks a compelling debut for Espiritu Recordings, showcasing Dojo Zone's versatile production prowess across five tracks. 'Dream Body (Exotica Mix)' kicks off with a potent blend of techno and progressive house, a dynamic journey through pulsating beats and twisted mood swings. 'Houdini Hauz' follows suit, infusing 80s-inspired sounds into a modern tech house, resulting in a groove-laden sonic landscape reminiscent of new wave aesthetics. The EP takes a detour with 'Obscure Entrance,' paying homage to Detroit's rhythmic heritage with its bubbling acid lines and 808 state-esque sounds. 'Bandu Bandu' is another goodie, that ventures deeper into the realms of futurism, with its serious and contemplative tones layered over intricate textures, offering a profound listening experience. Dojo Zone's masterful fusion of retro influences with contemporary production techniques makes this inaugural release from Espiritu Recordings a promising start for the label, setting high expectations for future endeavors.

Review: Ranges welcomes Elias with an exclusive dub EP, ‘FM Therapy’. Suggesting that the from-scratch process of sound creation through FM synthesis is so bare-bones as to be therapeutic, we’re impressed by this EP’s ability to transcend the received idea of the FM synth as a mere knocky monotone. The A-Side opens with the expansive soundscapes of ‘Aquatic', followed by a beautifully designed 4/4 action sequence in 'Red Lantern'. The B emphasises faster shades of dub, with ‘Severe' delivering a reminiscent chord and peaktime escape notes, before 'FM Therapy' and ‘Fog’ shed any former human essentialisms with ever-colder and evermore militant soundscapes.

Review: Fresh & Low's EP, originally released in 1996, has now made a triumphant return in 2024, captivating audiences once again with its timeless house/deep house vibes. The EP features a dynamic range of tracks that showcase their signature style, with standout songs like 'Mistral' and 'Funky Daz" setting the tone for a melodic journey through the realms of electronic music. "Mistral" boasts a classic deep house sound, characterized by a catchy bassline and reverberating melodies that create a smooth and immersive listening experience. The 'Power Mix' takes a new approach, infusing elements of New York house with the addition of female vocals and tribal influences. On the other hand, "Funky Daze" keeps the momentum going with its breezy and cool atmosphere, driven by a catchy bassline and melodic daze. Closing out the EP is 'The Way You Feel', a vibrant and groovy track that exudes upbeat house vibes while maintaining a deeper, tribal undertone.

Quo Vadis (Frank Kusserow remix) (8:55)
Review: Some techno classics earn their status with the barest of elements - and that's absolutely true of G-Man's 'Quo Vadis'. Originally released by ex-LFO man Get Varley in 1995, it's a devastatingly simple premise of a stark, subtly swung beat and funked up dub techno chord trimmed down to a fine point. That's pretty much all that's needed to render a timeless favourite which will do the damage on any floor, whether it's a big room techno situation or a push-on-through tech house marathon you're faced with. On this reissue for Back To Life we also get a remix from Frank Kusserow on the flip, which wisely retains the fundamental essence of the track and just gives it some chunkier drums.

The Wild Oats and Forget The Clock boss is in superb form once again here across four new cuts of Technically Deep house. 'Sit In Dat' has its head amongst the stars and it's roughed up drums firmly planted on the floor. 'Gherkin Roots' is more rickety and unconventional, with analogue clatter and synth stabs making for an unsettling mood. 'Alignment' cruises on warm machine soul and 'Pounce' cuts loose with a twisted dub sounds, spangled drums and raw as you like percussion.

Review: 'Waiting For The Lights' was first released in 1992, and is a breakbeat heartbreaker in mono, marrying stuttering leads and bleepazoid melodies into a hissing stew. Mandalay's mix is a heavyweight remix, not shy of indulging in 'tribal' additions such as marimba and djembe. By far the best remix is the Thai Mix, adding the perfect amount of weight with a rollicking acid line. We'll only say this about 'Waiting For Champion Sound', the B4: it deserved to be more of a hit.

Review: In response to reports of 'Discogs sharks' prowling around this deep house classic from Gene Hughes, HotMix have gone ahead and reissued the eureka moment that is 'Track Show (Volume One)'. Paring things back to their barest bones, the early-nineties nuage and prolific house artist, whose other monikers included Rawthenticity and Bluejeans, first released this six-tracker under the name Bluemoon Prodiuctions in 1990 via Code Blue. The first track might be deceptive to some, as its simplistic production is arguably the least endearing of the bunch, combining only a kick drum, bassline, pluck and stream train whistle; tracks two 'O' and 'U' quickly unravel these assumptions with a beautiful dyadic take on Italo and stringy-deep house respectively. Meanwhile, on the B-sider 'S', we're met with an early example of lo-fi house, while an angsty electro mood is heard on 'E; a final coup de grace is then delivered on the crepuscular piano highlight, 'Night', which strikes the perfect thematic balance between sexiness and misery.

The 14-track album, released by Compost Records, represents Laband's first full-length release since Deaf Safari in 2015 and features standout tracks such as 'Derek and Me.' The album builds on the foundation of Laband's previous work, drawing on source materials to create a rich and layered sound. But with The Soft White Hand, Laband ventures into new territory, exploring his own life experiences and emotions with remarkable depth and nuance.

'Dune District' is a lovely analogue drum track with some fizzing, bright melodies and taught bass notes. 'Voltage Vortex' starts with evocative loonbird calls and then sinks into some sultry deep house, and 'Shoreline Circuitry' puts more analogue drum sounds front and centre and peppers them with woodpecker-like hits and jumbled perc. 'Electribe Echoes' is a more menacing closer with some dark bass and creepy, howling pads up top bringing a ghostly vibe.

It was this three track EP back in 1999 that launched their label and 23 years later there is still plenty of clamour for it. What we get is deep house/tech-house fusion, with warming chords, sun-splashed electronics and bold, K1 organ basslines at the heart of the action. Review: Fresh from admired outings on Limousine Dream and Kalahari Oyster Cult, Cooper Fraser brings his Reflex Blue project to Spectral Bounce for the first time. The EP's title, The Bleeps, offers a clue as to what's on offer; while it's not purist bleep and bass of the sort that helped launch Warp Records (and the British bass music phenomenon), it does take plenty of cues from that sound - not least weighty basslines, ghostly 8-bit lead lines, subtle nods to hip-hop and clandestine aural textures. Highlights are plentiful across the five tracks on show, from the non-stop, acid-laced techno futurism of 'Dracula's MPC' and the trippy excellence of 'Ride The Bleeps', to hard-wired electro number 'Interlude' and the insanely bass-heavy brilliance of 'Distant Future'.

We Nevermind (5:09)
Review: The new label System Error kicks off with some proper good underground house vibes from Sisto. 'Free Your Mind' has a sunny West Coast disposition with some nice muttered words, sparkling keys and frictionless drums and snares. 'Seductive Room' has more of a stripped-back bump to it and a more introspective feel to the minor chords, while 'Unknown Paths' is an uplifting and jaunty groove that rides through the cosmos on soulful waves. Last of all is the heavier and off-balance late-night house sounds of 'We Nevermind.' A top EP and surely signs of good things to come from this label.

Sins (6:09)
Review: A second round of equine tech-funk from Alexander Skancke, Foehn & Jerome and Henriku, none of whom present solo tracks, but rather collab as a trio on every number. Following up May 2024's debut edition of 'The Black Horse', we're met with a fleshed-out sophomore amble come gallop here. Opener 'Maximalism Minimalism' bowls us over with its muted flutes and hip-house samples, while 'Satt' moves more fay with its wind chime tinkles and festive woodwind riffs. On the B comes 'Hungry Beat' - by now, our steed is raveonous for a bite to eat and an oasis to drink from, lest it perishes from dancefloor thirst - and 'Eins' - on which said colt (a work-horse from a hobby) - is finally let to graze, and rest.

Milestone (5:22)
Parallax (5:01)
Review: Frame Of Mind has been one of the best techno and house labels in the past couple years hailing from the Netherlands. This is the second appearance for Synaptic Voyager on the label in total. 'Epoch Ten' exhibits a premier example of the quality ambient techno the label has released in recent years. Fans of As One, FBA, Stasis and Sensurreal are sure to gravitate toward this track in particular. The 90s Detroit vibe is here in many respects. 'Ne Plus Ultra' and 'Reverie' are perfect tributes to the lineage there. The robot funk in 'Milestone' is particularly exciting with this early 90s styled foray into UK techno while 'Parallax' gives off a heavy Innovator and early Warp label impressions. If you are a fan of ambient techno then this is a quick and easy pickup.

Kevin Kendall - "Volca Three" (7:22)
Kevin Kendall - "August 10" (4:14)
Victor Reyes - "Inspired By Nature" (5:42)
Review: Six dance tracks skillfully blending old-school vibes with contemporary sounds, spanning acid, breakbeat, electro and house, inviting listeners to dream of underground raves and enigmatic gatherings where ethereal battles against soulless algorithms unfold amid nocturnal dance. Highlights include Trabuco's 'Happy Spliff, a vibrant mix of New York house and early 90s-inspired techno, setting a nostalgic yet fresh tone. Trabuco's 'Signals' follows, delivering a spacey techno experience that feels both futuristic and retro. Yepecc's 'UFO Camp' seamlessly combines electro and acid for a sci-fi romp that transports listeners to otherworldly dimensions. Kevin Kendall's 'Volca Three' stands out with its rich analogue bass, adding depth and warmth to the compilation. The album closes with Victor Reyes' 'Inspired By Nature,' which offers a cool, bouncy finale that leaves a lasting impression. Overall, The Sciences of the Artificial is a refreshing take on retro styled techno and it is perfect for those seeking a blend of nostalgic and fun.

Review: The Muzi Cartel's fifth transmission is another sublime minimal and tech house treat. It's a various artists affair with Varhat's 'Doggo' getting things underway with underlapping grooves and enchanting vocals swirling up top. Aldo's 'Fieu (Take III)' is an acid laced bubbler for the afters compete with freaky vocals and Nathan Boost offers a self titled future tech and cosmic workout complete with bendy basslines. Toni & Roland's 'The Strong Silent Type' closes out with a mesmeric fusion of astral ambient pads and deft and dubbed out minimal tech drums.

Review: WC Heritage is a captivating journey into Japan's underground dance music scene of the 2000s, curated by Gonno for his newly launched Sanka label. This compilation resurrects treasured tracks from WC Recordings, a label that championed "Japanese anarchy techno" and released groundbreaking material in the digital and CD format from 2004 to 2009, now making its vinyl debut. Featuring contributions from esteemed artists such as Salmon, Baiyon, Side B, Syuji Wada (DJ Wada), DSKE and Gonno himself, WC Heritage offers nine tracks that exude an edgy 'glitchy-ness' and infectious intensity. Each piece serves as a snapshot of a vibrant and creative moment in Japan's dance music history, previously hidden from the outside world. With its pulsating rhythms, experimental textures, and raw energy, this compilation stands the test of time, offering a glimpse into the innovative spirit of Japan's underground scene. WC Heritage is not just a collection of tracks; it's a testament to the untapped creativity that thrived in the shadows, waiting to be discovered and appreciated by a wider audience.

Review: If you have been out dancing on some of the more cultured floors out there then you might well have heard at least one it not both of the tunes that now finally get pressed up here to white label. They come from Volpat and have been hammered plenty by tastemakers like Zip and Ricardo Villalobos. Each one is a killer minimal tech house workout with smart drum programming and great use of synths and samples to keep things fresh and engaging. The A-side is the smoother of the two, while the flip is a little more rugged and playful. These won't hang around so don't slouch.

Review: After initially reserving much of his music for his own Tartan label, Wallace has been on plenty of fine sojourns to other top labels of late including CWPT's from Palms Trax, Studio Barnhus and Rhythm Section. Now he makes his biggest statement yet with a double album on Mule Musiq that draws on everything in his arsenal. His deft melodic touch and innocent synth work defines the first couple of clean and airy cuts while his knack for an unusual rhythm defines the loopy and hypnotic 'Midnight On The Mountain,' 'By The River' is a gorgeous deep house cut with eastern melodies and 'Bubbles' is pure dreaming material for zoned out sessions. A fine work from the talented Wallace.
