Review: The seventh in this series of 7" singles is by Bristol and Avon's Kinlaw and Franco Franco and it is a rare mix of sounds with R&B, Italian rap and twisted basslines all defining the tracks. 'Crocs On The Plough' is industrial and experimental in its production - earth-shattering bass, police sirens, and soot-black synths, but background chords bring light as the vocals are delivered with guttural rawness. On the flip, the OSVMVSM version slows things right down to a crawl and the distorted synths and crunchy textures take on even more otherworld character.

Pulled out of retirement once more, Jean-Luc Picard (played by the legendary Patrick Stewart) seeks help from Captain Riker to answer a distress call and uncovers a conspiracy reaching to the furthest corners of the Federation as well as the unwelcome return of an old foe. Thematic is dramatic, absorbing and emotive and is all captured on this record.

While it's not a traditional, action-driven score, the pulsating synths of 'Nung River' and dissonance of 'Chef's Head' bring tension to the forefront. Its final moments with 'Finale' bring reflection to a movie that explores the boundaries of duty and sanity. Although challenging at times, the music's blend of synthetic and natural elements provides a fascinating listen, especially for those open to a bold 1970s electronic sound.

Flip to side B, and Florian T M Zeisig, under the alias Angel R, takes all that and turns it inside out, onto its head, and down into the depths of the selkie's world - a mythical creature capable of shapeshifting between seal and human form which features heavily in Scottish folklore. Beguiling and enchanting, prepare to be submerged in a place of beauty, bliss and mystery.

Review: If you've not seen Gabrielle Provaas' innovative and heartfelt documentary Onzinchtbaar we implore you to do so. The film hones in on 'invisible heroes' responsible for keeping a country clean on a day-to-day basis. From hospitals to streets, schools to offices, this is the workforce that ensures the cogs can move and many more people can get stuff done. So what exactly does that sound like when Fatima Yamaha is drafted for the score? Opening on 'Het Begrijpt Je' might suggest the kind of patient music that accentuates attention to detail. That's certainly true at times, like the staggeringly beautiful piano number 'Hooikoorts' or the drones and twinkles of 'Hotel Haast'. But then we also have more hyperactive moments, and noises to accompany those - 'Veeg Life' and its bouncy, club-ready elec-tech, 'Kissey's leftfield deep house, 'Schiet Zo In Je Rug' and its strange, fidgety epic-ness.

Review: Ekin Fil's drone-pop consternations emerge through vaporous tones and forlorn, distant songs, as if plucked from a dream. These pieces exist on their own accord, moving with an internal logic of emotional heaviness that transcends mere shoegazing ambience. Her compositions evoke the fragmented etherealization of Elisabeth Fraser's voice from a forgotten David Lynch scene, acting as an ASMR trigger for Proustian recollection - profound, hidden, and desolately sad. The Helen Scarsdale Agency has had the pleasure of witnessing Ekin's continued growth as a composer, releasing seven of her magnificent, under-the-radar gems. Her slow-burning, dejected ballads draw from a deep well of sorrow, with varying frequencies and intensities of bitter light poking through - loves lost, a world broken. While not hopeless, her music acknowledges the considerable hardships we face. Sleepwalkers embraces familiar metaphors of narcolepsy and the unsettled state between sleep and wakefulness. Yet, it stretches into new territories with compositions paralleling Tim Hecker's gravitation soft-noise in 'Stone Cold' and slow-motion serialism in the ambient crawl of 'Gone Gone.' Review: Heart Dance Recordings is a genuinely unique proposition: a new age, ambient and spiritual music label run by, and for, women, offering up decidedly calming music from an ever-growing roster of artists. The Phoenix-based imprint's latest full-length excursion was created by a trio of musicians: flautist Sherry Finzer, percussionist and vocalist Karasvana (real name Ella Hunt) and synthesizer enthusiast-come-guitarist City of Dawn (Damian Duque). There's much to admire about The Journeying Sun, from the daybreak beauty of 'Memory of Awakening' and the immersive, enveloping bliss of 'On Seashores of Endless Worlds', with its haunting chimes and drifting vocal refrains, to wide-eyed aural wonder of 'Resident Wandering' and the simultaneously pastoral and ethereal 'Indefiniteness'.

Review: Collected by his friends and colleagues - Erik K. Skodvin and Dave Kajganich - The Last Sunset of the Year is as heartbreaking as it is beautiful and breathtaking. A double album of posthumous work from experimental composer Marcus Fjellstrom, the music here was written and produced during the seminal artist's tenure as composer for the first season of ABC anthology series, The Terror. Many pieces have been made available for the first time on this collection, and as the sleeve notes explain, the idea was to present the tracks as a standalone album, rather than a companion piece as soundtracks usually are. It certainly works. While it's possible to determine these bits were written for a supernatural show, so many are capable of stopping you dead in your tracks on their own terms. Quietly powerful contemporary classical, ambient and drone.

Review: It's not always easy to keep up with the output of the relentlessly prolific Flaty, a core tenet of Moscow's Gost Zvuk as well as pursuing his own endeavours. From hard-edged experimentalism and dub-scuffed glitch to oddball ambient and wayward techno, he's a truly original spirit, and his new album continues that trend with yet another dimension to his sound. Intuitive Word is imbued with a strong pop and RnB slant which bleeds into the sample sources and the strong sense of melody, but still this remains a leftfield, compelling release for those with an experimental appetite. Quite how Flaty has squared off these contrasting forces is hard to express, but take a listen to 'Intension' with its tripped out beat and synth arrays shot through with vocal licks and you begin to get the picture. It's dope as hell and oh so sweet on top, like nothing else out there right now.

Review: Flutter Ridder is the collaboration between Norwegian artists Espen Friberg and Jenny Berger Myhre, and both are key figures in Oslo's contemporary art and music scene. Their creative bond formed during the production of Friberg's 2022 debut album, Sun Soon, and in November 2023 they recorded their debut self-titled album in a historic wooden church in Hvisten, Norway. The duo created a unique sound influenced by the flow of air and electricity by combining Friberg's Serge modular system and the church's pipe organ. The result is a whimsical, cinematic album that smudges liturgical, microtonal drones with unpredictable timbres that reflect their environment and vision.

Review: Back in 2005 we might not have predicted what a phenomenon Ghost Box would become. In the years since, the label has become a beacon for the hauntological exploration of Britain's inherent oddness creeping just below the surface. Julian House's graphic design is a huge part of the label's artistic merit, and it figures his music as The Focus Group follows a similarly aesthetically rigorous direction. There's a pastoral collage quality to Hey Let Loose Your Love which takes you right back to the 70s, with beautiful musical passages offset by surrealist samples and unexpected diversions into the recent history of these wyrd isles.

Review: Produced at EMS Stockholm on Buchla 200 synthesisers before being mastered down the road in Malmo, Quasai is Francesco Fonassi's first LP based around the Quasi project, and goes well beyond what you might call Traditional Album Territory. Hence the live show this is based around being far more than a gig, inviting audiences into increasingly entangled arrangements that seem to grow and develop, set down roots and respawn like some evolutionary modular array. On record, the complexity of what's here isn't really lost, albeit we'd have a hard job arguing that home listening compares to in person performance. Nevertheless, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in this strange, cerebral place where the music itself seems to take inspiration from blinking control panels, glittering data, plucked strings, and drip-drop percussion.

This is the audio, and while nobody who caught the video when it was available to view on-demand could argue this is just as powerful on its own, the solo sound is still an intoxicating and compelling ride. 'The Dane' is classy piano bliss, '#2' sits in the big room electronica end of things, 'Fundamental Values' is a scatty, broken ambient journey to the edges of drum 'n' bass, 'Enters' opens on long, ambient refrains.

Review: It's one of those elephant in the room questions many artists likely grapple with, without really discussing it openly. How will a musician's work be remembered after they have left this world? In many artistic cases, we only come to appreciate an individual's output for what it is after they've gone, and this in itself is likely a phenomenon that creatives dwell on whenever considering the wonder of life. Here, veteran electronic music composer Jill Fraser has used this idea as a central theme, using a vintage 1978 Serge Modular, a Prism Modular, and Ableton Push 3 to reinvent and reconfigure a number of American revival hymns. These archival tunes are made new, and now built for the future, raising questions about their own mortality, or lack thereof.

Review: Unheard Of Hope - one prominent tine of the holy trinity / label supergroup known as TAR/MM/UOH - specialises is that all-too-rare subsection of music, the avant-garde. Theirs is a seedier aesthetic, preferring the more traditional, yet grimmer and demurer ends of this hotly contestable musical "approach", and perhaps emblematic of this is the latest record by Guatemalan cellist and vocalist, Mabe Fratti. Out on every format - tape, CD, vinyl - Sentir que no sabes ("feel like you don't know") hears Fratti's crystalline vocals glint like life-giving liquids, and sound too to effuse from the same fruitful source as its watershed cello lows and occasional blossomy arp-pop structures (ballad 'Pantalla azul' is by far the poppiest moment). The evident confidence brought to the record lends it an element of surprise, too, when we discover that it is entirely thematically rooted in doubt. In the words of the artist, this is a record born of the "moment when you feel you don't know anything and you are soft like jello and any fork can go through you." When one finds strength in permeability, one embraces what is normally registered as a pure antagonism, and all seemingly rigid particulars are changed for ever.

Review: Mabe Fratti's fourth solo album in five years, Sentir Que No Sabes, captures a range of emotions while exploring relationships and the actions that follow. It is direct and poppy and approachable but also reveals a rich emotional depth while remaining, as Fratti describes, "groovy." Written and recorded with her partner, the multi-instrumentalist Hector Tosta who also produced and arranged, the album emerged from an intense and detail-oriented process in their home studio. Tosta was joined by drummer Gibran Andrade and trumpetist Jacob Wick to expand the sound and in amongst longer pieces the album's short instrumental interludes, like 'Kitana' and 'Elastica I and II,' set the tone and mood for the record overall.
