Baaz - "Burgundy" (6:39)
Idealist - "Why Did You Come Here" (8:07)
Thomas Wood - "Rough Road" (5:37)
Christoph Schindling - "Most Important" (8:22)
Review: Swiss label Idealistmusic return with another fine various artists EP: the first since 2015's edition which brought us great stuff from SCSI-9, Pablo Mateo and Idealist himself. For the label's ninth edition, they serve up some tough tribal deep house by fellow Swiss deepness purveyors Baaz of Office Recordings whose contribution "Burgundy" is emotive as ever. Thomas Wood's "Rough Road" is classic deep house informed by a healthy love of classic Chicago sounds by Larry Heard or Chris Gray. On the flip, Christoph Schindling's contribution "Most Important" is a summery and hypnotic groove awash in tape saturation and lo-fi aesthetics; its spanglish melodies working some real magic over its strict electro beat.

Benoit B - "100%" (4:12)
Candido - "Shaktiman" (4:07)
Review: The latest missive from Benoit B's Banlieue label is a tight double-header in which the boss man takes top billing. His A-side cut "100%" is a sleazy, mind-bending chugger where bleeping electronics, breathy vocal snippets, ghostly lead lines and "clonk"-style percussion hits rise above a sludgy bassline, new beat drums and a filthy bassline. Candido (not the disco-era percussionist, but rather a rising star of German electronic music) handles the B-side, offering up an even darker and sleazier number that joins the dots between EBM and new beat (think stabbing, mutilated vocal samples, machine-gun percussion fills and "Sensoria"-era Cabaret Voltaire bass).

Cong Burn 02
Cat: CB 02. Rel: 12 Mar 18
BFTT - "Public/Private"
Lack - "Absent"
Chekov - "Celeste"
Howes - "Untitled"
Review: Cong Burn made a mighty splash with its first release, clearly flaunting the kind of wares you'd expect to hear from Livity Sound alumni or other such esteemed techno renegades. The second installment is no slouch either, featuring a new cast of crooked creators offering up their wares for the modern mutant dancefloor. BFTT has a weighty low end thrum powering "Public/Private", while Lack takes things in a scuffed and nimble direction. Chekov pushes out into more experimental pastures with the broken beats and displaced sound design of "Celeste" and Howes creates a wonderful strain of mystical deep house for darkened souls. Each one of these tracks is loaded with flair and personality, yards ahead of your average generic knock offs and presenting something with real merit to the convoluted world of dance music.

Cat: VIS 003. Rel: 25 Oct 16
Geroll (9:11)
Diphtongues (7:34)
Tenno (3:14)
Review: This steadfastly experimental three-tracker has its origins in a Hamburg instillation by F#X and Nika Son. That installation was created utilizing a battery of tape machines, broken synthesizers, cheap drum machines and their own manipulated vocals. The resultant tracks are dark, woozy, atmospheric, densely layered sonically, and devilishly hard to pin down. So while nine-minute A-side "Geroll" revolves around a manipulated, hip-hop style breakbeat, it's the ghostly electronics and curious effects that catch your ear. Flipside "Diptongues", seemingly created from densely layering up reversed vocal samples and creepy electronics, is even more impressive, even if it may inspire nightmares amongst the squeamish. Bizarre music concrete cut "Tenno" completes a fine package.

Autarkic - "Screaming (To Be With You)" (feat The White Screen)
JD Twitch - "Dalbouka"
Sneaker - "I Looked For You"
Die Orangen - "Rattling Ghosts"
Review: After teaming up to release the scintillating works of C Cat Trance in their original 80s form on Screaming Ghosts, Emotional Rescue and Malka Tuti join forces once again to deliver a ludicrously talented roster of remixers who catapult John Rees Lewis' cult group into thrilling new spatial and temporal zones. Autarkic decides to go for the full-tilt cover version on "Screaming (To Be With You)", with ample help from The White Screen, while JD Twitch roughs up "Dalbouka" into a quintessential slab of ethno-motorik body music. Sneaker's take on "I Looked For You" emphasizes the atmospheric tension in the original, giving the track a cinematic scope, and Die Orangen's "Rattling Ghosts" finishes the record on an appropriately ominous, subtly industrial tone.

Red Axes - "Shake The Mind"
Jamie Paton - "Take Me To The Beach"
Prins Thomas - "Sudaniyya"
Khidja - "Simple Helen" (feat Borusiade)
Review: Emotional Rescue and Malka Tuti serve up another round of top shelf remixes and revisions of John Rees Lewis' mid-late 80s project C Cat Trance, following in the wake of the Screaming Ghosts compilation. First up to bat are Red Axes, who bring a seductive line in loose and limber drumming to "Shake The Mind" that should suit the Fourth World dancefloor massive just fine. Jamie Paton brings a tough, clamouring intensity to "Take Me To The Beach," while Prins Thomas takes a truly spiritual approach when weaving the intricate arpeggios and percussion of "Sudaniyya." Khidja and Borusiade team up on "Simple Helen," presenting a dense and hazy trip into exotic territory with sinister undertones.

Luder Pre
Review: The wonderful Er + Er imprint has a knack for getting some of the biggest names in electronic music together and jamming the hell out! Some of the works by Ricardo Villalobos for the label have been simply sublime. This time, we got legend Carl Craig going head-to-head with the supremely talented Francesco Tristano in a sort of classical techno vibe. "Luder Pre" combines a mid-tempo percussive beat with some seriously twisted piano work, twisting and contorting into a right old spin. It's a one-sided gem, it's 300 copies limited, so you better get yourself one quick!

4'33 (Castro's Happy Birthday extended edit)
Review: Can there ever be a musical statement as decisive and divisive as John Cage's '4'33'? A quick primer for the uninitiated - in 1952 Cage presented this three-movement piece, in which any ensemble of musicians are to sit and not play a single note, the piece being made up of the environmental sound in which it is performed. The idea of an edit of this piece feels somewhat tongue in cheek, but Castro Moore of the Berlin-based Sound Metaphors crew has such sonic mischief woven into his various guises (DJ Poppers, anyone?). Enjoy this 'Happy Birthday' version 70 years after Cage broke the ultimate taboo on the idea of composed music.

Confine (11:16)
Expand (11:26)
Review: Iranian label Shahr Farang has been quietly issuing some of the most engrossing minimal, ambient and abstract records in recent memory, keeping the release rate simmering but ensuring every record is worthy of attention. Romanian champ Vlad Caia makes a welcome addition to the label, embracing his experimental side with these engrossing studies of leftfield percussion and sound design. "Confine" is a spacious excursion that rolls out interloping sequences of synthetic chimes that fall with an almost organic patter. "Expand" is similarly delicate, feeling as though it floats midway between the earth and the edge of the atmosphere with passing globules of synthesis dropping through its clouds of cyclical melody.

Sulu Sekou (7" version)
Coney Storm Drain (extended version)
Review: Ahead of the drop of his debut album, Houndstooth are sneaking out this little 7" shaped taster to give expectant Call Super fans an idea of what they're in for come the big release date. "Sulu Sekou" is a finely woven electronica tale enriched with haunting instrumentation that piles romance and mystery into the endearing pops and fidgets of the homespun rhythm. It's a decidedly mellow excursion compared to the previous Call Super singles, lifting the lid on the exciting new avenues down which the artist is headed. "Coney Storm Drain" appears here in an extended version that finds a base layer of micro-static and winsome melody interfered with by scattered rasps of percussion, building in intensity without ever feeling too anchored to any one direction, like any good exercise in experimentalism.

Camelia - "Transferring" (8:45)
Macarie - "Flu" (7:57)
Exander - "Odyssey" (7:46)
Lulla - "Distort Time" (7:30)
Review: The first release of Default introduced us to emergent players in the minimal tech field such as Exander and Rojid, and they're at it again with the fresh faces on part two. Exander makes a welcome return on the B-side with the moody "Odyssey", but there's also sparkling new dubwise immersions from Camelia and crafty micro-disco from Macarie to lose yourself in. Lulla turns in one of the most interesting cuts on the record, using a densely packed rhythm section and a smattering of sample slices to create a dynamic club track full of inventive energy.

Dance Less (Alessandro Adriani V1RMX)
Top Less (YPY Exp Ver)
Review: Hugo Capablanca has been measured in his approach to releasing music of his own. While his label continues to grow in stature, fresh Capablanca material doesn't come along every day, and this salvo on Disco Catorce is a welcome fix. Lipeli's "Paper Sound Dub" of "Lap Dance" is a killer restrained roller that leans towards heavily percussive disco and bug-eyed 70s sound FX. "Track 2" finds Capablanca getting heavy with the signal processing, creating a right racket in the process. Alessandro Adriani's remix of "Dance Less" is a lean, menacing workout of wave-laced techno, and then YPY freaks the end of the record out with the "Exp Ver" mix of "Top Less".

Review: Carbo Flex aka Graeme Evans drops his debut release on the UK's Central Processing Unit, and it's an absolute scorcher of an LP. This is a debut release, and he drops something of a mini-masterpiece reminiscent of Autechre's best and most singular moments. In fact, it isn't really his sound which resonates with the 90s IDM scene, but more the freedom of expression heard throughout these tracks. Synthed-out, electro-tinged monsters for lovers of good electronic music.

Review: EXPERIMENTAL/ELECTRONIC: Little was known about the still impossibly young Dro Carey when he made his debut for The Trilogy Tapes label back in 2010 with the Venus Knock EP, but the reclusive Australian producer has certainly left his stamp on the electronic music world subsequent to that release. Across numerous drops on Hum + Buzz, Templar and Ramp Recordings, Carey has developed a quite singular, often experimental take on electronic music that giddily sticks two fingers up at attempts of easy categorization. Returning to Will Bankhead's supremely curated label with Leary Blips, the six tracks present cast Carey in his most confident and complete frame of mind to date. Seemingly flitting between standing still and tunnelling ever downwards while attempting to create all new rhythms and tempos at ease, from the moment the cavernous bass drops in the opening title track Carey takes you on a ride through music you're likely to have not heard before.

Review: In case you didn't know, Caribou toured around Europe with a band just a few years ago, and you know what? He's been kind enough to record three of those gigs and press up on wax for ya! Featuring the likes of Four Tet and James Holden among his band members, the record contains segments from three shows: two in Ghent and one London at the illustrious Scala venue. The former is perhaps the maddest part, but you can only truly get to grips with its insanity once your hear that brass riding all over the high-speed live percussion. Sublime.

Review: From DJ Spider & Marshallito's surreal and heavy throwdowns to Mix Mup's snaking drum workouts, Chemotex's noisy excursions to Ekman's industrial clout, the sound of The Trilogy Tapes has been distinctly geared towards loud, pounding club tackle recently. However Will Bankhead's label has always been much more than just a dancefloor vessel, as this new offering from Carl Gari and Abdullah Miniawy demonstrates. Carl Gari is a Munich-based group comprised of Jonas Friedlich, Jonas Yamer and Till Funke, who describe themselves as psychedelic ghetto rave. Miniawy meanwhile is a noted Egyptian chanter, composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Madinet El-Fayoum. Reportedly recorded in Cairo over the course of a few days, the brief collaboration has manifested in a four-track 12" with the slow-creeping sonic dread of "Nayroz" and 12-minute "Al Weyasha" undoubted highlights.

Review: The well regarded Whities label invites you deep into a darkened world of coldwave soundscapes on its next 12". There are Arabic overtones to Carl Gari's music here, both explicitly in the meditative vocals from Abdullah Miniawy, but also in the exotic synth drones that hang heavy in the air. It makes for a spiritual eight track affair that has a beautifully bleak and spiritual feeling: tracks are largely empty, absorbing affairs with only suggested rhythms moving you forward. Part organic and human, part mechanical and synthetic, Whities 023 is a bewitching and otherworldly listen of the highest order.
