So Fine (feat Big Sandy) (3:06)
Mestizo (4:59)
Mom & Dad (feat Claudia Lennear) (4:23)
Time After Time (4:48)
Review: ,Joe Bataan has been busy in East L.A. with Orquesta Rene for this new Latin jazz double 7" courtesy of Steady Beat. It features four all new pieces drenched in soul and percussion, starting with 'So Fine' (feat Big Sandy), a mid tempo groove with vocal longing and languid horns. 'Mestizo' is a more steamy and intimate piece with sung-spoken lyrics and glowing, golden chords. 'Mom & Dad' (feat Claudia Lennear) has s steamy shuffle to its rhythms and classic Latin percussive sounds next to a call and response vocal and 'Time After Time' closes with a sentimental feel.

A Night In Tunisia
Review: After a successful first 12" on Ya Basta! Roy Dubb (aka Gotan Project's CH Müller) is back with a follow up on his own label. He delivers this time two covers of jazz classics: Mongo Santamarias' latin jazz hit "Afro Blue" and Dizzie Gillespies' Bebop standard "A Night In Tunisia". Both tracks feature the beautiful and irresistible voice of Tatjana Heintz (aka Okou from the Five Corners Quintet) and talented young French saxophone player Jocelyn Mienniel whose beautiful instrument from 1942 suits perfectly Dizzie Gillespies' composition from the same period.

Brotherson (Rare long disco instrumental version)
Brotherson (Strings & vocal shorter album version)
Review: Repress of the sought after Mukatsuku Records 12 containing two remastered tracks of Atlanta musician Ojeda Penn presented here according to Ojeda officially for the very first time. The A side kicks off with the extended holy grail instrumental version of 'Brotherson' taken from the Happiness album. There were two versions of the album Happiness in 1980 on the IFE independent label. They looked almost identical but the first version contained the now rarer elongated 9 & half minute jazz fused instrumental version of 'Brotherson' and then a few months later Penn recut the same album but with a much shorter version of the main track but this time adding strings and vocals assisted by Tommy Stewart from 'Bump N Hustle Music' fame. The former version is now being sold up to 500 dollors so this 180 gram single is a welcome release to the reissue market. Juno copies come in an exclusive branded card sleeve + sticker

Hit Or Miss

Odetta - "Hit Or Miss"
Bo Diddley - "Hit Or Miss"
Review: Two hugely historic versions from Adidas's high-schooling Originals imprint. Odetta's 1970 original is a beautifully sexy, smouldering piece of smoky blues while Bo Diddley's cover (that came four years later) is much more upbeat and funk focussed with added horns and head-turning bass runs. Both have inspired every generation that's followed and have undergone myriad sample treatments. Return to the source and understand just why they've been so influential.

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou-Dahomey - "It's A Vanity" (4:21)
Clement Melome Et Le Orchestre Poly-Rythmo - "Nougbo Vehou (La Verite Blesse)" (4:49)
Review: The legendary Afro funk fusionists Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou Dahomey have got unlimited amounts of big tunes in their back catalogue and the fiery 'It's A Vanity' is one of them. It has fat and chunky drums with trademark horns leading the way next to the impassioned vocals. The tune twists and turns on a vibe as it funks you up and then on the flip is the more lo-fi and stripped back, earthen funk sounds of 'Nougbo Vehou' (La Verite Blesse). Anotehr killer 7" reissue from this great collective.

Ma Wa Mon Nou Mi O (4:48)
Review: Benin funk supergroup Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou have an essential discography that takes in some of the most definitive afro-funk sounds you can hear. The Acid Jazz label serves up a couple of such betters here with 'Kpede Do Gbe Houenou' layering up the driving grooves, killer horns and wild keys into something intoxicating. Less intense but just as good, 'Ma Wa Mon Nou Mi O' brings the guitar work to the fore, with plucked and funky riffs underneath the imploring vocal work that's up top. Both tunes have been restored and remastered.

Provaci Anche Tu Lionel (Poliziesco) (1:36)
Provaci Anche Tu Lionel (Indagine) (1:03)
Provaci Anche Tu Lionel (Discoteca) (2:48)
Review: This is another fine addition to the Four Flies 45 series: it is a first-ever 7" taken from one of the few soundtracks that legendary producer and composer Paolo Ormi ever wrote (namely a rather underwhelming parody of Woody Allen's Play It Again, Sam). He is best known for his mix of Italian funk, disco and library music, both for underground labels but also stars like Raffaella Carra. All three of the instrumentals here are seriously funky - two of them have actually been put out before as part of this label's hard-to-find compilations Esterno Notte and Esterno Giorno.

Cogiendo Pon
Review: Hats off to US label Electric Cowbell who unleash yet another funky 7 inch from another live band you may have never heard of! Orquesta El Macabeo are a 12 piece salsa band from Puerto Rico established in 2008, with two albums already under their belt. The music they play is not strictly purist salsa but it's heavily influenced by the style, incorporating accessible lyrics, catchy melodies and irresistible instrumentation. Two energetic tunes are presented here; ''El Sueno'' with its scatting Hammond, and on the flipside the more vocal led fast n furious ''Cogiendo''. Perfect examples of the genre for anyone with a smidgeon of interest in Latin music.

La Vem Salgueiro
Tenha Fe, Pois Amanha Um Lindo Dia Vai Nascer
Review: Samba flavours do not come more authentic than this. The sixth in Mr Bongo's Brazil 45 series, here they unearth two foundation pieces from Rio collective Os Origianais Do Samba. Forming in 60s Rio, they're still highly active today and have a discography peppered with Brazilian gold. This 45 does well to showcase their breadth... "La Vem Salgueiro" is quintessential samba. Heavy rhythm, punctuated vocals and a dynamic that leaps from bold and delicate in a flash, it charms you instantly. "Tenha Fe" has a softer soul as it strums and sways and more of a folky sensation, tight harmonies and alluring naked instrumentation.

Os Rouxinois - "Um Balanco Pra Voce" (2:52)
Wal Sant'ana - "O Viajante" (3:09)
Review: It was the iconic Copacabana Records that put out this classic MPB back in 1964. That makes 'Um Balanco pra voce' by Os Rouxinois one of the oldest releases in Mr Bongo's Brazil45 series and it is also one of the best. Arnaud Rodrigues wrote the tune which is a superb mix of exotic funk, bossa nova rhythms and quirky melodies from a five-track 7" of tunes that the band originally used to play on TV. On the other side, 'O Viajante' is the sort of irresistibly sunny sound that quickly wins your heart and is sure to light up any dancefloor.

Spare Cheeks (4:13)
Review: Detroit label and weekly party Funk Night rolls out another unmissable 7" here in the form of The Oscillators, who bring a late night and woozy sound to lo-fi production aesthetics. 'The Scoop' is a slow motion and psychedelic tinged groove with squealing guitar leads taking you into melon twisting territory while the flutes keep things in the here and now and the dusty drums rumble on. It is truly intense. 'Spare Cheeks' then has a more upbeat funk feel led by nice horns and a more silky and seductive groove, particularly the lithe bass.

Off The Clock (3:05)
Review: The Oscillators say they are not a band but instead "an experimental recording collaboration that turned out swimmingly." Back in June they dropped a brilliantly psyched-out soul and funk album that represents their native Seattle scene and was as deep and raw as you can imagine. Now they are back on Tramp with a potent 7" featuring two more super tight cuts. Led by drummer oLLi kLoMp with other members from bands like Rippin' Chicken, the Pulsations, Lucky Brown, the Trueloves and 45th Street Brass, this debut 45rpm features the horn-led heavy funk of 'Cosmonaut' and more percolating and deep cut sounds of 'Off The Clock'.

Montag's Dream
Review: YES! UK label Far Out Recordings re-enter the 7" game in fine fashion with this killer 45 issue from emergent Brazilian jazz troupe Otis Trio. Both "Otis Natu" and "Montag's Dream" are a seven inch shaped taster for what to expect from the band's upcoming LP for Far Out and it should be quite the set on the basis of these two cuts. The five years of experimentation and creativeness experienced and explored by the Otis Trio's core member sound out in rich and vibrant detail on both cuts that mix in their various influences of be-bop, free jazz, contemporary music with added sprinkles of rock, hip-hop and are finished off with dazzling improvisation.

Review: The Brazil 45s series from Latin diggers extraordinaire Mr Bongo reaches its 24th edition and its becoming clear Wilson Simonal de Castro is a favourite of the label curators. "Nana" is the Rio artist's fourth appearance in the series thus far and is a rather lush samba jazz affair with horns and strings aplenty backing Wilson's delightful vocal delivery. Originally issued as part of the 1964 album A Nova Dimensao Do Samba, this airing from Mr Bongos is the first time the track has appeared on 7" in 50 years and is complemented by "Rita Jeep", a early 70s track from Osmar Milito that was penned by the legend Jorge Ben!

Review: The latest addition to Night Dreamer's series, Direct To Disk Sessions, sees Turkish downtempo specialist, Islandman, iconic percussionist and Don Cherry collaborator, Okay Temiz and contemporary saz player Muhlis Berbero?lu joining forces for the very first time. Recorded in just one take, the session captures a one-off melding of the trio's distinct styles. Islandman's signature balearic sound gives new force to Temiz's fiery percussion, reframing Berbero?lu's Anadolu folk influences into a distinctly dance-ready sound. Stand out track 'Fidayda' eases us into the trio's expertly improvised soundworld with an alluring, oscillating saz riff. When Temiz's percussion enters the mix, it arrives with a controlled unpredictability capable of leaving listeners in a trance. While Islandman's production subtly centres the piece, mapping out a pathway from which the organic instrumentation can unfurl. Future-folktronica at its very best

Different Methods To Achieve Music (And Pre-Recorded Percussion)
Review: Here we find Office-R focusing on improv and free jazz sounds, and make a wholly respectable racket doing so. The band is comprised of six members playing laptops and regular instruments, creating a marriage of the acoustic and electronic. The saxophone and oboe flourishes are held down by the struggling laptop squelches, squeals and samples before they break free in all their screaming glory only to become shot down by a stray string of binary. Comparable to the work of John Zorn and the Tzadik label, or the less noisy end of Mego, "Mundane Occurrences & Presentations" is best heard on a large soundsystem or a damn good pair of headphones, it's crystalline detail and thick buzzing sounds needing to be heard loud and clear. The musicianship and craft (of software use as well as classic instrumentation) on this record are what stands out most.

Review: Another comprehensive collection of jazz here from the good people at Light in The Attic. This 14 track compilation has been carefully selected and compiled by Japanese jazz expert Yusuke Ogawa, who is the owner of Tokyo's Universounds record store. It comes on heavyweight vinyl with vast track-by-track liner notes by Ogawa and take sin everything from hard bop to free jazz with plenty of big and explosive moments as well as more deep and introspective sections of calm, all of which has been plucked from the vaults of Nippon Columbia. There is a reason Japanese jazz is so revered, and this record shows why.

Review: The Gutifunk & Achilisound Discos label is based in Platja d'Aro on the Costa Brava in Spain. Its mission is to reissue rare and vintage records but they also deal in plenty of fresh new sounds. And that is where Dani Nino's Ogyun Afrobeat project comes in. It has put out two albums before now, one in 2013 and one in 2016, and this third one is the best yet. It is a glowing Afrobeat work doused in jazz and soul goodness with rousing horn work, plenty of busy percussive lines and lush chords. It has been made by a fine collective of artists on ass, keys, sax, flutes, piccolos and plenty more and is a truly life-affirming listen.

Review: Recorded just three years after Johnny Cash startled the wardens at Folsom Prison, convict Reynard Birtha was given a rare chance to head an ensemble and record this unique four track LP. Released privately it saw a stupendously limited release - until Jazzman came along and did what they do best. Long, drawn out jazz jams, allowing each of the imprisoned instrumentalists to shine, it's a curious blend of tight funk and spiralling grooves. And the story behind the creation of the album is really interesting too...

It's well-worth checking, not least because the music served up by Orchestra Cometa - a trio made up of cosmic-minded Italian library composers - is the kind of eclectic but inspired goodness that deserves a wider audience than the 1976 album originally received. Over the course of the album the trio variously touches on psychedelic beat music, harmonica-laden easy listening, pastoral free-jazz, Clavinet-heavy funk rock, saxophone ambient (trust us, it's ace), neo-classical and much more besides.

It is a follow-up to the one they dropped back in 2021 and is another section of traditional voodoo ceremonial music from the group from the mid-seventies. The name of the album is taken from the large ceremonial Sato drum, which is played with wooden stick beaters at special ceremonial occasions. Across an accomplished and many-sided career he's laid down a powerful statement against the idea everything's been done on six strings, and this album is another fine case in point. If the title sounds formal, don't be fooled - there's a raucous energy to Music For Four Guitars. It sounds free and raw, even as it deals in minimal motions between clashing axes played by Orcutt in conversation with himself.

Review: If you're into ice cool, traditional jazz music, then it can't really get much better than The Oscar Peterson Trio. The band, aside from the legendary Oscar Peterson himself, is a large conglomerate of musicians whose output dates back to the early 1950s; that's right, almost three-quarters of a century worth of quality. Night Train is their 1963 album, and this reissue comes from Verve themselves, who have thankfully left the packaging the same as the original. There is something in here for all to enjoy, and while the sounds might not be as mad or as radical as Miles Davis or Herbie Hancock, there is definitely plenty to be enjoyed in this timeless and sensual collection of jazz songs.

The jazz pianist was joined by Ray Brown on double bass and Ed Thigpen on drums, between them tackling a number of pop songs, bossa nova, film themes and standards. Producer Jim Davis was committed to capturing the live feeling of the band and approached the recording sessions in October 1964 as such. This reissue follows Verve's exacting attention to detail, with transfers from analogue tape and presented in deluxe gatefold packaging.

Review: Osibisa's magnificent The Lost 70s Live Shows resurrects the pulsating energy of the Afrobeat and highlife fusion that defined the band's vibrant sound. Released as a testament to their dynamic live performances in the 1970s, the album captures the group's fierce genre-defying spirit with infectious rhythms, hypnotic percussion, and spirited horns. It is with these that the group create an immersive experience that transcends time with multicultural influences abounding throughout. Osibisa's lost live shows showcase their ability to ignite stages with an infectious blend of African, Caribbean, and jazz elements so do not sleep on this reissue.

Review: This reissue brings this cult record to wax for the first time. It was Eric Dolphy's last studio album and one that is often held up as a perfect example of mid-60s post-bop. It was recorded in 1964 and just a month or so later the artist passed all too soon. All five compositions from the original quintet album are presented here in the same order as they were originally but with new artwork. The record has some big free jazz energy a la Peter Brotzmann Tentet and wild man Mats Gustafsson on baritone sax yacks that up.

Review: A key component in modern Turkish music since the '70s, Mustafa would have gone under the radar if it wasn't for break diggers. While he's still active to this day, Genclik Lle Elle is largely cited as his creative zenith. Recorded in Istanbul, 1973, the instrumental album takes the funk template and flings it into experimental, often cosmic pastures. Highlights include the planet-hopping glissandos on "Zeytinyagli", the progressive head-swirling frenzy of "Lorke" and the infectious eastern-fused riff on "Emmioglu". Plus it's on coloured vinyl. Plus it's got a monkey sound engineer on the cover. Plus it's limited. This record has a hell of a lot going for it.

Review: The history of Jewish gangsters (the Kosher Nostra) in America isn't perhaps the most obvious inspiration for a compilation, but then Shantel has never been your average DJ/producer. Here he's teamed up with artist Oz Almog - curator of the Jewish museum in Vienna - to present a detailed audiovisual history of the links between the Jewish underworld and American musical culture. The importance of the 21 tracks - which range from Hebrew big band hits and odd vaudeville numbers to quirky show tunes and crackly recordings of traditional Jewish favourites - is brilliantly outlined in the accompanying essay. It's this in-depth analysis that makes Kosher Nostra a worthwhile investment for the musically curious.
