Enlightenment Is Now
Enlightenment Is Now (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: HP 020. Rel: 16 Sep 24
Enlightenment Is Now (6:02)
Enlightenment Is Now (12Tree remix) (6:49)
Review: Hot Piroski Records have been on something of a hiatus for the last year or so but now make a welcome return with a new EP series. This collaborative affair is the result of an epic journey in an old Mercedes from London to Gunjur and finds label head Robin 12Tree working with The Gambia and Bongo Koi as Gambian Disco Express. 'Enlightenment is Now' marks their first release on Hot Piroski Records and it comes with vocals from Gambian mystic Rev. Joseph N'Gole, recorded on the banks of the River Gambia. This one has already been hammered by Psychemagik, Pete Herbert, and Severino from Horse Meat Disco so it comes quality assured.

I Never Knew

I Never Knew (280 West mix)
I Never Knew (280 West dub)
I Never Knew (280 West reprise)
Review: Jersey's veterans 280 West make a big-time return to Phuture Soul with this powerful three-track EP of soulful, garagey vocal house. "I Never Knew" is classic Jersey, a big-time male vocal with some chunky drums and disco horns blasting away on the hypnotic, catchy soulful groove - the A-side "West" mix is a stormer for the clubs. On the flip you've got a super-fat dub mix and the beatless reprise mix to do some DJing damage with. Fans of DJ Spen and the East Coast sound will be all over this big time release.

The Gift
The Gift (12")

The Gift (40 Thieves Disco mix) (6:36)
The Gift (40 Thieves Disco dub) (7:38)
The Gift (40 Thieves beats) (4:26)
Review: After an absence of a few years, 40 Thieves return to Leng Records with one of their most special releases to date: a hook-up with long-time Patrick Adams collaborator Gary Davis and long serving soulstress Cinammon Jones. What's on offer is a re-make of one of Jones' songs, 'The Gift', whose sweet lyrics celebrate the arrival of a new day. 40 Thieves take, explored first in the A-side 'Disco Mix', sounds like it was designed to be danced to during a San Francisco sunrise - think dub disco delays, hypnotic grooves, bubbly electronics, languid guitar licks and gentle melodies. Over on the flip, they take the track further into 'woozy 6am open air dancing territory' on a superb, stretched out 'Disco Dub' mix, before peppering a killer drum track with spaced-out electronics on the 'Beats' version.

Washing Up
Cat: SKINT194. Rel: 12 Jan 11
Tomas Anderson - "Washing Up" (Tiga remix)
Dave Clarke - "Dirtbox"
Goose - "Bring It On" (MSTKFT JFK remix)
X-Press 2 - "Lazy" (feat David Byrne)
Review: Skint cull four of their biggest hits from last years fifteenth anniversary comp for this twelve inch that demonstrates the breadth of their output. Side A pitches Tiga's classic 07 electro reworking of Tomas Anderson against the industrial techno pressure that is Dave Clarke's "Dirtbox". On the flip you get a reminder of when MSTRKRFT were actually quite good with their thumping rework of Goose which is an uneasy bed fellow for X Press 2's chart bothering deep house collab with David Byrne. These tracks have been out of print for ages so it's nice to get another opportunity to grab them on vinyl.

ATFC & Gene Farris - "R U" (5:49)
ATFC - "Tech House Kinda Thing" (6:17)
ATFC - "Not Enough" (feat Mia Mendez) (5:58)
Review: Toolroom has gone from underground house label to one of the UK's most successful and large scale dance brands. They keep on serving up the sort of hits that become big festival anthems and this is another one, with new school Chicago artist Gene Farris paired off with ATFC for big, rollicking piano house sounds on 'Spirit of House.' 'R U' then gets more tech edged and sweaty on a big synth loop and walls of drums, while 'Tech House Kinda Thing' is a supersized tune designed to do plenty of damage. There is real funk and soul in the cut up and filtered vocal loops of closer 'Not Enough.'

Bottoms Up
Cat: SSE 011. Rel: 03 May 07
Bottoms Up (main mix)
Bottoms Up (alternate mix)
Review: Louis Benedetti teams up with Bass Master Gene Perez and brings us "Bottoms Up", some foot stomping instrumental house. "Bottom's Up" showcases Gene in top shape, laying a solid hip-shaking groove while dropping his signature "riffs" and "licks" at the right spots. In addition to the house mixes, there is also a special bonus track recorded live while rehearsing with Selan on a Fender Rhodes. Often imitated but never duplicated, Gene Perez deserves our recognition for his influential style and flavour that he brings to house music and we are grateful for the opportunity to work with such a talented musician.

Bob Sinclar - "I Feel For You" (Star B extended remix) (5:03)
Groove Armada - "Superstylin'" (Riva Starr edit) (6:18)
Review: The idea behind the Snatch Classics series, which is finally making its vinyl debut following a few tester releases digitally, is deliciously simple. It sees label founder Riva Starr and friends deliver fresh interpretations of classic cuts. On side A you'll find a fresh take on Bob Sinclar's "French touch" filter disco anthem 'I Feel For You' by Star B - AKA Starr and UK techno stalwart Mark Broom. Their version is chunky, energetic, loopy and bass-heavy, re-framing the cut as a tech-funk workout with added string-laden disco chops. Over on the reverse, Starr re-edits and pimps up Groove Armada's 'Superstylin', making it even more sub-heavy, dubbed-out and boisterous (albeit in a rather classy way, we think). Tasty tweaks of classic cuts: what's not to like?

Turntables On The Hudson Vol 10
Cat: WONDER 68. Rel: 24 Sep 15
Bonobo - "Flashlight" (5:28)
Gregory Porter - "Liquid Spirit" (Claptone remix) (6:21)
Aero Manyelo - "Tshunga" (5:40)
Sorceress - "Brother Dragonfly" (Pablo Sanchez remix) (5:11)
Review: Brooklyn's Wonderwheel imprint has been going strong since the mid noughties, and the label has always offered the best freshest that the world dance scene has to offer. Gliding between broken beat, nu jazz and house, their identity has never truly been reliant on one genre or form, and we like them all the more for it. This week sees the tenth installment of the Turntables On The Hudson series, another chapter in a fine collection of multi-faceted music for the lovers of something a little funky and different. Main man Bonobo comes through with "Flashlight" on the A-side, a tropical house tune with a gentle touch, while jazz funk legend Gregory Porter is remixed and housed-out by Claptone, the man's soulful vocals riding beautifully amid those kick drums and piano lines. On the B-side, "Tshunga" by Aero Manyelo is an Afro dance tune with a heavy dance backbone, while Pablo Sanchez turns "Brother Dragonfly" by Sorceress into a lo-fi house tune with a tight little percussion knot. Gorgeous!

Groovemasta - "Gonna Make U Rock" (6:32)
Review: It's a sizzling seven up for Moiss Music here as they draw together four different artists to offer up one cut each for this new various artists collection. Boogietraxx goes heavy on the filter vibes on 'S N T' which is French touch disco-house of the highest order. Kellit's 'Pryscoks Sockin Socks' is all about sultry sax lines and loose-limbed disco house beats while C Da Afro gets heads up with the streaming sunshine synths of 'Don't Be Quiet.' Groovemasta shut down with the funky Afro-disco stylings of 'Gonna Make U Rock.'

Review: The Red Bul & Gyn label made a good impression with its first release and now the founders Thomas Bulwer and G Glynn step up with a second collaborative EP of fresh tech and minimal. 'Caffeine' is a shot of energy with its rising synth lines and dramatic sense of intergalactic space travel over a busy, acidic bassline. 'Like It Ruff' is an old school throwback with rap vocals and electro beats, then 'Acid Wash Conflict' is a thumping tech house sound with unsettling pads. 'Techno Talk' closes down with a mid-tempo electro sound and retro-future edge.

Review: Gregory Del Piero, of Subliminal and Swing City fame is back, this time on San Francisco's soulful house outlet Loveslap. Chuncky bass countered with a smooth rhodes line make the basis for the original mix of Visions as Billy Love's r&b style vocal skim back and forth throughout the beat. Remix duties here come from Charles Spencer himself, who slows down the track, adds some jazzy lounge styled piano riffs, a stand up bass, and some 60's soul-jazz horns.

That original has been sent over to Gary Davis - a long time friend of Adams - who then added his own unique stylings to it with some lush disco strings amongst other things. The stems of that version have now been sent to producer Knoe1 who flips it into two of his own new dubs which hare now served up here on a limited release in honour of the original artist. Two timeless and dubby disco gems worthy of inclusion in any proper collection.

Greenskeepers (Are You Hip remix)
Review: New talent Tracy Cooper returns to Greenhouse for a sizzling four-track EP that's just loaded with jazztastic house grooves. This is an excellent release that follows in the Greenhouse vein of Slum Science, Blacksoul etc. with plenty of Chicago-flavoured grooves working the floor. "Listen To Ya Mamma" kicks things off with a strong building filtered groove over some heavy punchy drums and stabs, while "Are You Hip" is a pure swinging jazzer for the Mike Dixon and Stacy Kidd heads. "Please Stay" is a funky party track that works well on the floor with a seriously stripped down, bumping DJ Heather flavour. Closing it all out is the Greenskeeper's remix of "Are You Hip" which cuts things up nicely for a more jacking Joey Youngman type of groove. Hot release for the househeads here.

Review: PNP's first collection of sample-heavy disco-house reworks, released earlier in 2017, sold out in record time. It's likely that volume two won't hang around long, either. Predictably, it's packed with party-starting jams, from the cheeky R&B vocals, bumpin' beats and disco guitars of Slamb's "Needs", to the slinky, filter heavy soul-goes-deep house sweetness of Gut Instinct's impressive closer, "The Girl You Love". In between, DJ Swagger combines snappy, ghetto house style drums and R&B vocals on "I Don't Need Your Love", Turk Turtleton beefs up an '80s soul/boogie gem and Fedde LNG offers up a smooth and floor-friendly take on a much-loved disco-era sing-along.

Assuming his Special Request alias but in truth sounding more like what Woolford does under his own name, this remix of Gabriels's 'Angels & Queens' is all about bringing hands in the air festival house energy, big piano chords and allowing the original vocal to bring that gorgeous sense of soul. It's a perfect meeting of pop and dance, as is often the case with Woolford's remix work.

Review: Gaelle Adisson's "Give It Back" is the first single released on 'Transient', her debut album for Naked Music. Gaelle was the voice of Wamdue Project's UK #1 "King of My Castle" and Ananda Project's "Cascades of Colour". Both of these, along with "Rain" - her first single for Naked Music - became instant club classics.

Rosie Gaines will also be synonymous with her smash hit single 'Closer Than Close' (also the name of her fifth album) which now gets reissued by the Demon Record Singles Club. Gaines actually started her career back in 1985 when she perfumed and recorded with The Curtis Ohlson Band but it was when she was a member of Prince & The New Power Generation that she really got noticed. Her Closer Than Close album came in 1995 and soon after she was dropped by Motown, but a remix of the title track a year so so later arrived in club land on bootleg and sold over eight million copies around the world.

Freed From Desire (2024 version) (3:33)
Freed From Desire (Diplo extended mix) (4:29)
Review: Gala's iconic dancefloor hit resurfaces with a sharp, modern edge, proving that true anthems never fade. Nearly three decades after its debut, the 2024 version injects the track with fresh energy, weaving crisp electronic textures into the unmistakable melody that first captured hearts in the 90s. There is a balance of nostalgia and reinvention that amplifies the hypnotic chant we all know, providing an infectious rhythm with new layers that feel built for contemporary club sound systems. What's remarkable is how the essence of the original remains untouchediits euphoric pulse still as irresistible as it was on its first spin. It's a celebration of a track that continues to unite generations on the dancefloor.

Review: Galathea is the new project by Massimo Napoli and title of his first album. Named after the Nymph Galathea, as a tribute to nature and sea, the album reveals a strong personality: a mix of spiritual sounds and African settings that lead the listener into a unique experience. From the meditative and trance-inducing deep house of 'Afrique'on the A side, through to the hypnotic and dub-laden polyrhythmicity of 'Sunset Dub' (alternative Vibe) on the flip, there's more spiritual and Afro house-inspired journeys into the aether as heard on 'This Is African Jazz'.

Review: DJ Gallegos debuts on London label Curving Track with 'Sycophantic Maniac', sonically denigrating the worst kind of person out there; clingers-on, suckers-up, sycophants. Who knew the language of contempt was acid breakbeat, though? '0832am' hears clippy claps and trance-notic voices whirl through a new wavey bank of sound, as the artist gears up to swat clout flies away from their audio interface early in the morning. Angel D'Lite appears on a steamy breakbeat remix of the lead track, meanwhile, bringing sheer queer mass to an otherwise light and airy EP.

Review: Rhythm Section's latest favourite, (Oliver) Gallegos, evidences his mastery over the art of what we like to call the "speech tune" - a format almost as old as time. Think Rum & Black's 'Slaves' or Underground Resistance's 'Transition'; the formula is as such; a slow-built dance beat, at least over 110BPM by our estimation, over which a rousing historical speech plays out throughout the track. Though this form lends well to a 90s rave aesthetic, Gallegos finds himself at a post-comedown period of history, indeed in which "rave" is often bittersweetly thought to be anachronistic; and in which house music often reigns supremer. So, then, does he bring a record-breaking, body-moving homily vocal sample to an incredibly arranged set of house arpeggiations and medley-style sample cut-ups, working in a sort of auditory bricolage but nonetheless bringing them together under a seriously reflective memorial dance-dome.

Review: New music from Morgan Geist will always be celebrated thanks to his role in Metro Area, and more recently Storm Queen, and the New York producer is certainly on effervescent form with this debut 12" under his new project The Galleria. The four track Calling Card 12" finds Geist calling on the spirit of freestyle, club dubs, razor-edits and bubblegum-pop R&B there is something immediately satisfying to each one of them. Hyperdub artist Jessy Lanza provides some thrilling vocals to both original versions of "Calling Card" and "Mezzanine", the latter is a particularly sweet proposition, and Geist also contributes some superb '80s style dubs.
