Don't Let Me Down
Cat: URDC 130. Rel: 21 Nov 24
Don't Let Me Down (feat KZ) (3:53)
Track 2 (4:12)
Review: Beautiful Shibuya-esque hip jazz from Wa Yo Set, the dazzler jazz-funk band and fan favourite of the Urban Discos roster since 2020, when the quartet released their debut record, Boogieback. 'Don't Let Me Down' is their latest single for the label, and is rather like nothing we've ever heard before, overlaying a raspily swung vocal rap flow from MC KZ against a superbly improvised arrangement mixing snappy drums, classical guitar, double bass and alto sax. On the B is the similarly speedy 'Konyawa Boogie Back', an instrumental cover of the J-pop duo Halca and Yucali's 2009 chart smash.

Cat: SK45 01. Rel: 20 Nov 19
Warren G - "Regulate" (feat Nate Dogg) (4:10)
Luniz - "I Got 5 On It" (feat Michael Marshall) (4:17)
Review: The Street Knowledge "45 series" appears to have been set up to educate heads on original 1990s hip-hop jams, or at the very least deliver fresh pressings of some seriously classic cuts. This inaugural release begins with Warren G and Nate Dogg's 1994 heater "Regulate", a deep and seductive number that makes great use of samples from Michael McDonald's teary blue-eyed soul classic "I Keep Forgetting". Flip to the B-side and you'll find Luniz 1995 hit "I Got 5 On It", a cut that's been bitten, reworked and re-made umpteen times in the 24 years that have passed since it was first released. As this reissue proves, the Oakland duo's original version is still streets ahead of the rest.

Try My Love (4:45)
Try My Love (Boogie Back mix) (3:51)
Review: A sophisticated blend of electronic, funk and soul, originally released in 1991 and back here in 7" form. Side-1 features 'Try My Love,' an underground jam that highlights Washburn's ability to blend these genres into a classy, enjoyable track. Side-2 presents the 2024 Boogie Back remix of 'Try My Love,' which smoothes things out and transforms the original into a melodic disco groove. This remix adds a fresh, modern twist while retaining the soulful essence of the track.

Popular (feat Madonna & Playboi Carti - explicit edit) (3:58)
Starboy (feat Daft Punk) (4:07)
Review: American superstar The Weeknd really went big with the guests on 'Popular', his dynamic r&b and pop hit from 2011, by enlisting none other than Madonna and Playboy Carti. As a breakout hit from his mixtape era, it showcases his seductive charm and magnetic presence, drawing listeners into his world of late-night escapades and hedonistic pleasures with infectious beats and smooth vocals that exude confidence and swagger and set the stage for his meteoric rise to fame and influence in the years to come. Flip it over and on the back of this Kiss Classics 7" you will find the equally effective 'Starboy' featuring Daft Punk.

2 Stings (2:50)
Review: Two remix-mashups come courtesy of Hoffstein under the pseudonym 'Westside Doom', dedicating some well-known MF Doom acapellas to some new instrumentals. The producer behind these cuts is Eets, who lends murderous, xylophonic moods to Doom's '2 Stings', while an even slower instrumental, full of lolling strings and warring ambience underpinning Westside Gunn's alto raps.

Eric B (3:29)
Review: Westside Gunn's latest project, Hitler Wears Hermes 8, shows his adeptness as a curator rather than a central figure. The confrontationally prolific Buffalo rapper strategically incorporates dynamic guest appearances throughout both halves of the album, allowing them to shine while he takes a more subdued role. Gunn's writing exhibits moments of brilliance throughout. The album's smart sequencing and near-uniform excellence of guest verses highlight Gunn's skill as an A&R, with interludes further enhancing the album's atmosphere. While each half of the project leans heavily on collaborators and mise-en-scene, the overall result is a supremely competent yet somewhat forgettable addition to Gunn's discography. Notable moments include standout tracks like 'TV Boy,' where Gunn's delivery shines amidst grimey production, and collaborations with Mach-Hommy, showing their chemistry.

Manifestin (clear vinyl 7")
Cat: KRB 2022. Rel: 01 Aug 22
Manifestin (feat Angelo Arce) (3:46)
Manifestin (feat The Soulyghost - remix) (2:36)
Review: Cali rapper WILDCHILD hails from the legendary Lootpack crew but Omowale was his powerful new solo album. It found him exploring what it means today to be a Black man in the U.S and features plenty of top guests such as Posdnuos (of De La Soul), Big Daddy Kane, and Guilty Simpson. This is one of the best tunes from the album so it gets its own pressing and new remix. 'Manifestin' (feat Angelo Arce) has hard bars and rugged, prickly hip hop beats. On the flip is a version featuring The Soulyghost and remixed into a splashy, broken beat workout with yearning vocals and hefty drum kicks.

Friday Night (T-groove remix) (4:26)
The Way She Makes It Bounce (3:19)
Review: Winfree's 'Friday Night,' a catchy 7" on Six Nine, delivers a fresh take on soul with a modern twist. Side-1 features the T-groove remix of 'Friday Night,' blending a slamming slow groove with funk and electro complete with vocoder work that nods to Zapp. Side-2's 'The Way She Makes It Bounce' dives into early electro sounds, perfect for low-rider music enthusiasts, channeling the spirit of Roger Troutman. This release captures the classic vibes while infusing it with contemporary elements, making it a track to check out for fans of both old-school and modern funk. Both sides, needless to say, are proper party starters.

Mobb Deep - "Shook Ones" (Wipe The Needle remix) (3:53)
Jay-Z - "Ignorant Shit" (Wipe The Needle remix) (3:47)
Review: Gamm has more recently become synonymous with jazz, Latin, disco and soul edits but right now is on admission to go back to its roots. And they are hip-hop from the golden era. Wipe The Needle does a superb job of harking back to that legendary time in the 90s when dusty drums and crispy claps were all we wanted to hear. First up he tackles the iconic 'Shook One's by Moby Deep and flips it into a slow motion groove that is deep as you like. On the flip, Jay-Z's 'Ignorant Shit' (Wipe The Needle remix) is more defined by the original bars, but the beats are just as sick.

Let's Straighten It Out (cut Creators edit) (4:11)
Review: Octave Lab, based in Japan, have embarked on a fresh series of 7"s, onto which the A-side comes pressed with a classic American funk and soul original, whilst the B, handled by a hip-hop hand in the classic stylee, Cut Creator$, flips things to harder and hipper effect. This time we meet again with O.V. Wright's 'Let's Straighten This Out', an omnipotent-sounding instrumental soul track cut from the superb record The Bottom Line. The track adjudicates and resolves, between romantic plaintiff and defendant, an egregious inter-relational tort, by way of ultra-slick, leaden strings and anodyne pianos: "sit yourself down, girl, and talk to me... tell me, whassa on your mind?"

Review: The accomplished London musician and producer Wu-Lu serves up a new EP on Warp that is actually more like an album here. It is 30 minutes of well rounded sound files with narrative that takes and more nuanced, personal approach than his breakthrough, anti-gentrification anthem 'South' and much loved LP, LOGGERHEAD. The big energy of those is replaced here by a series of diary entries that all take inspiration from growing up in Brixton. These of death and loss feature as do the general struggles of life while poet and artist Rohan Ayinde and award-winning author Caleb Femi also guest.

Back In The Game (4:49)
Review: Taken from the album Black Gold, this 7" single comes on limited edition white vinyl and offers up the superb 'What's Happenin'' featuring Method Man and Busta Rhymes on the A-side. It's a beat-driven workout with funk in the drums. The B-side offers an exclusive and rather more stripped-back mix of 'Back in the Game' with Ron Isley, Inspectah Deck, Method Man, GZA, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah all seamlessly blended with the instrumental of 'House of Flying Daggers.' It's not often you get so many iconic collaborations all on one record which is why it is such a big hitter.

Review: This split single pairs two hip-hop legends for a compelling blend of styles. On Side-1, 'What's Happening', unites Method Man and Busta Rhymes over a soulful piano-driven beat, delivering charismatic flows and undeniable energy. Their chemistry crackles as the track bridges classic Wu-Tang grit with Busta’s rapid-fire dynamism. On the Side-2, an exclusive mix of 'Back In The Game' collides with the instrumental of 'House Of Flying Daggers', creating a hypnotic reimagining. The intricate production layers cinematic depth under sharp lyricism, offering a fresh perspective on both tracks. Review: Waajeed is a top tier talent - a producer, DJ, expert beat maker and label head at Dirt Tech Rack who moved away from his deep house sounds to cook up this masterful hip hop record back in 2006. It now arrives on vinyl almost 20 years later but time has not diminished its quality. It finds the Detroit native, who thrives on breaking conventional boundaries, telling the story of the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst as an emblematic American tale that he pairs with a raw beat framework that taps into the vibes of artists like J Dilla and Slum Village. It is a serious work from a serious artist.

Lead singles "Playing Games" and "Come Thru" have already done well in the charts, while the remix of Walker's "Girls Need Love" featuring Drake is another gem amongst many here. Further collaborations with the likes of Usher, Bryson Tiller and 6lack also enrich this album, which is a contemporary take on classic r&b. Smoochy, romantic bedroom grooves and plenty of heart-aching vocals from the Atlanta talent will make you nostalgic about teenage love. Honest reflections on relationship woes crop up often and lend the album an air of depth and credibility that make it all the more essential.

It is a lush collection of soul so tropical you feel as if you're dancing deep in a steamy jungle as the music uplifts and truly nourishes. It draws on his family heritage in the West Indies and finds David once again singing about this famous string of sun-kissed islands across 13 joyful cuts. These are tracks with rich arrangements and plenty of world instruments making a fusion of disco, zouk, Caribbean, Afrobeat and funk that make a lasting impression. An essential album as summer approaches.

Review: Warren G's 2005 album In The Mid-Nite Hour delivered more of his already by then well-established signature West Coast sound with smooth G-funk beats and laid-back flows. He will always be known for his classic track 'Regulate' but Warren G continued to fuse hip-hop with funk, soul and r&b influences throughout the following years, not least with this record. Standout tracks like 'In Case Some Sh*t Go Down' and 'I Need a Light' feature collaborations with Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg and they perfectly capture that timeless West Coast vibe. The album blends some witty, pithy storytelling with his signature infectious grooves and stands tall as a testament to Warren G's talent as both a rapper and producer while keeping the G-funk legacy alive.

Tracks like 'Que Sera', 'Ungodly Fruit', and 'How I Feel' showcase his unique ability to craft lush, atmospheric beats reminiscent of RJD2 or Portishead's Geoff Barrow. A key part to the success of this release, is the use of samples - ranging from classic hip-hop to cinematic dialogue - with some tracks, particularly those featuring orchestral arrangements, stand out for their unusual intricacy, with 'Hypnosis Theme' and 'Our Dance' exemplifying Wax Tailor's mastery of blending classical elements with laidback rhythms.

Review: The Weeknd's latest project continues to push boundaries, but it's the quieter moments that really leave a mark. Take 'Dancing in the Flames'iit starts with muted synths, almost tentative, like something trying to find its footing, before blossoming into a dense, emotionally charged soundscape. Tesfaye's falsetto feels particularly vulnerable here, a perfect match for lyrics that seem to teeter between hope and resignation. On 'Timeless (feat Playboi Carti),' the mood shifts entirely. Carti's jagged verses cut through the lush production, creating a tension that makes the track feel alive and unpredictable. And then there's 'Sao Paulo (feat Anitta),' which bursts out with a vibrancy that feels like a releaseia rare moment of pure celebration. Overall, the album's impact lies in its restraint, in the contrasts and the spaces between moods where it truly resonates.

Highlights include 'Timeless', a brooding collaboration with Playboi Carti, and 'Sao Paulo', a sultry track featuring Anitta, blending Latin rhythms with atmospheric production. Thematically, the album explores redemption and self-reflection, with Abel Tesfaye's haunting falsetto weaving through stories of loss and longing. Fans can experience this new chapter live at a one-night-only show at Pasadena's Rose Bowl, a fittingly grand stage for what promises to be an unforgettable closing act.

It features a number of guests such as Tyler & The Creator, Jim Carrey and Lil Wayne as well as production from Calvin Harris. The album's standout single is 'I Heard You're Married' which is a gloriously catchy disco-dance beat with singable choruses and epic synth lines. The whole thing is a mix of dance, electro and pop with more wax and textural beats next to the sentimental songs. It's one of his most adventurous and a real return form.

Review: It may have been released digitally six months ago, but Kanye West's "Jesus Is King" album - his 12th solo set in total - has finally made it on to vinyl. By now, most will have already heard it, but for the uninitiated "Jesus Is King" sees West meditating on Christianity, offering up a tight 27-minute set of tracks that draw influence from (or explicitly sample) gospel music in all its forms. It's still a hip-hop album of course, it's just that the beats, musical choices (gospel choirs, loops from killer records by gospel soul act The Whole Truth etc) and lyrics are closer to the black American gospel tradition than anything West has released before.

Review: Sixth months after it first dropped on streaming platforms, the expanded 'deluce' version of Kanye West's 10th studio album finally drops on CD. Less over the top and strutting than its predecessor, Jesus is a King, the double-disc set continues the iconic artist's infatuation with blending cutting-edge contemporary hip-hop (and nods to his musical roots in the '90s rap scene), R&B and his beloved gospel, resulting in a grandiose and entertaining set that makes use of a huge roll call of guests and collaborators *Lil Baby, Lil Durk, Lil Yachty, Roddy Ricch, Young Thug, Jay Electronica, Travis Scott, The LOX, Kid Cudi, Fivio Foreign, Westside Gunn, Conway The Machine, Playboi Carti, Jay-Z, Shenseea, DaBaby, Pop Smoke and Andre 3000 all feature). It's basically stadium hip-hop blended with reflective soul and R&B; given that nobody else does it quite as well as Kanye, it's no surprise that Donda hits home hard.

Review: The ever divisive Kanye West dropped this 10th album Donda on streaming platforms back in August 2021. He has already served up an expanded 'deluxe' version on CD and now it comes on limited edition vinyl. Kanye West's new collaborative album with Ty Dolla $ign, VULTURES 1, feels unexpectedly cohesive and fully realizedia surprising change of pace for West's recent output. Known for raw and often incomplete releases, this time he brings clear production and a crisp, polished mix. Ty's smooth delivery contrasts with Kanye's own verses, blending effortlessly on tracks like the Donna Summer-sampling 'Good (Don't Die)'. Rhythmic, industrial beats provide a dynamic backdrop, especially on tracks like 'Paid' and 'Carnival,' giving this album a depth that stands out in West's complex, ever-evolving catalogue.

Review: Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign join forces on Vultures 1, delivering a polished, cohesive project that showcases their combined talents. The album feels unusually complete for West's recent output, with crisp mixes and dynamic arrangements that highlight Ty's signature silk-and-grit vocals alongside Kanye's evolving artistry. From the airy melodies of opener 'Stars' to the Donna Summer-sampling 'Good (Don't Die)', the album strikes a compelling balance between nostalgia and innovation. Tracks like 'Burn' and 'Paid' stand out with hypnotic beats and intricate rhythms, while the Brazilian funk-inspired 'Paperwork' adds a playful, global flair. Ty's smooth hooks complement Kanye's performances, which, while technically precise, focus more on fitting the production's mood than dominating it. The production shines throughout, blending industrial textures with moments of emotional resonance. Songs like 'Carnival', featuring Playboi Carti and Rich the Kid, bristle with energy, while the lush layering on 'Do It' and 'Fuk Sumn' enhances their infectious grooves. Despite occasional lyrical flatness, the album's sonic brilliance and pacing make it a captivating listen.

Review: Kanye West may be widely criticised and sidelined these days, but he will forever be known as a vital hip-hop pioneer whose influence is undeniable. Back in 2024, he teamed up with Ty Dolla $ign to release Vultures 1 - an album that is bold and genre-defying and reflects the duo's musical prowess and polarising personas. Production is layered and lush, with contributions from heavyweights like Timbaland and James Blake, and standout features from equally big names like Playboi Carti and Travis Scott. Tracks here all shine with lively rhythms and high-energy flows, even if the lyrics don't always hit the mark. Nonetheless, the project topped the Billboard 200 all the same.

Review: He might pretty much be cancelled these days but there is no denying the impact Kanye West has had on hip-hop. As recently as last year with Ty Dolla $ign he cooked up 'Vultures 1' which now comes as a special Carnival Edition and is a provocative, genre-blending affair that showcases both artists' strengths and controversies. The production is sonically rich with contributions from top-tier talents like Timbaland and James Blake, and guest appearances from venerated verse men such as Playboi Carti and Travis Scott. Tracks like 'Carnival' stand out with their infectious drum patterns and energetic deliveries even if the lyrical content is not up there with their usual best work. Despite the controversies surrounding West, this album achieved commercial success and topped the US Billboard 200 chart.

Review: Vultures 1, Kanye West's collaborative album with Ty Dolla $ign, is a refreshingly cohesive entry in West's catalog, showcasing his attention to refined, crisp production. Unlike his recent, more experimental releases, Vultures is polished and sonically unified, with beats that highlight Kanye's inventive sound design and Ty Dolla's smooth vocals. Tracks like 'Good (Don't Die)' nod to 808s & Heartbreak, delivering a nostalgic yet modern take on Kanye's signature introspection, while 'Carnival' pulses with rich textures, blending elements of Brazilian funk and industrial beats to create a hypnotic groove. Kanye's verses are more technically precise than ever, and though his lyrics are less personal, they maintain a certain energy that keeps the momentum alive. Ty Dolla's silky, gravelly tones are the perfect counterpoint, adding warmth and balance. From the bouncy 'Stars' to the club-ready 'Burn', the album is built on rhythms that are as intricate as they are accessible. Though more restrained in theme, Vultures achieves a polished, infectious sound with irresistible beats and thoughtful production, proving Kanye can still push boundaries while embracing a more mainstream appeal.

Review: WHODINI's Open Sesame album is a perfect example of the best of 1980s hip-hop. It showcases the group's pioneering blend of catchy beats, slick rhymes, and infectious energy. Originally back released in 1987, the album features iconic tracks like 'Funky Beat' and 'Rock You Again (Again & Again).' With its innovative production and charismatic performances, 'Open Sesame' solidified WHODINI's status as one of the most influential groups in the genre. From start to finish, the album exudes a sense of excitement and creativity, leaving a lasting impact on hip-hop music which means it might sound of its time but it remains a classic and an essential listen for any fan of old-school rap.

Review: Wiki is Patrick Morales, who came up as one third of NYC hip-hop crew Ratking before dropping the solo mixtape Lil' Me and his debut album No Mountains In Manhattan on XL in 2017. Now he's back with his third album Half God, and he's going deep on the experience of growing up in New York and how it's shaped him as a person. His relentless flow of poetic lyricism is delivered in stark terms, backed up by Navy Blue's production throughout. Shy of typical beats and breaks, this is a more musical, flowing kind of rap which hits with nostalgia and sentimentality to match the hard-bitten street-level perspective Wiki invites us into.

Review: Wiki's new album, 14K Figaro, arrives after a slew of collaborative projects with the likes of The Alchemist and MIKE, Navy Blue, Subjxct5, and NAH. The album is produced entirely by Tony Seltzer, a longtime collaborator who helped soundtrack his earliest efforts - including No Mountains in Manhattan, his 2017 debut album for XL Recordings, and Oofie, its potent 2019 follow-up. Guest features include the World's Fair MC Remy Banks, the Bruiser Brigade spitter Zelooperz, and the prolific D.C. native WifiGawd. A curveball in relation to his past projects, the native New York opts for a clean sound, adding in pepperings of drill and net rap - with samply stutters abounding on lackadaisical favourites like 'RL' - yet retaining the streetwise, grilled enfant terrible's omnipresent rawness.

He is a multi-hyphenate also involved in the world of fashion and other creative industries and spent 26 years tap dancing. During the pandemic, he started dancing at home each day which in turn inspired him to record this percussive opus alongside some of the Motor City's most talented rappers and musicians. With plenty of improvised elements, it was all recorded in one take and is a fine exploration of rhythm and sound.

The 1994 long player came four years after the American singer, musician, poet, writer and actor's debut and featured Rage Against The Machine's Zach De La Rocha and Mia Doi Todd. Couched in rock but drawing on trip-hop, rock, conscious and art rock it's an electric melange of thoughts and sounds and that gets a welcome vinyl pressing via Fader.

Review: Vanessa Williams' Survivor marks her return to music after a 15-year break, where she focused on acting and other ventures. In this album, Williams seamlessly blends the many facets of her career, from pop and r&b to jazz and theatre. The lead single, 'Legs (Keep Dancing)', is a bold, confident dance track that reflects her enduring energy, while the house-pop track 'Bop!' entertains her fanbase with cheeky humor and vibrant beats. The album's range includes pop standards like 'Junk Man' and the jazzy 'Zaz Zuh Zaz,' where Williams showcases her sultry, polished vocals. Her love for classic music shines, especially on 'Come Dance with Me' and 'Being Good Isn't Good Enough', where she brings an elegant, theatrical touch. With thoughtful production, Survivor revisits Vanessa Williams' signature sound while incorporating fresh elements. Despite its familiar themes, the title track carries a personal resonance, illustrating her journey and resilience. Williams' versatility and her ability to evolve while staying true to her roots, proving that she's still a commanding presence in music. This comeback reaffirms her as a talented performer across multiple genres.

Now she cross new genre borders, sharpness up her hypnotic wordplay and lats down plenty of playful melodies that all help make for one of her most personal albums to date. It is fun and intimate as it tackles veracious subjects from new romances to endless love with features from Chicago natives such as Saba and Peter CottonTale.

It is packed with features from several Wu-Tang members and affiliates although the likes of GZA, Masta Killa, Method Man and Cappadonna do not feature. RZA is the executive producer for the album and he oversaw collabs with venerated hip-hop vets like AZ, Kool G Rap, Masta Ace, and Havoc from Mobb Deep. There are also some wise musings from RZA who delivers several philosophical spoken word tracks which helps bring the whole thing to life. A follow-up to this one came two years later in 2011 in the form of Legendary Weapons.

Review: Legendary Weapons is the second of two compilation albums that focus on the works of iconic hip-hop collective Wu-Tang Clan. The first was fully endorsed by the band and had RZA as executive producer as well as dropping some knowledge in the form of various philosophical spoken word skits. On top of that, further features come from Sean Price, M.O.P., AZ, Action Bronson and Roc Marciano amongst others.
