Xtra Brux - "Somebody" (5:43)
Trev - "For You Around Me" (4:57)
Ishfaq - "Hypnosis No 9" (5:06)
Review: Freshly minted label Dance Regular has pushed the boat out for release number one, pulling together no less than six tracks on a multi-artist extravaganza. James Rudie steps up first via the Rhodes-laden, off-kilter deep house dustiness of "Good Fry Up", before Szajna doffs a cap towards 2000 Black on the deep and musically rich broken beat business of "Break In My Back". Captain Over's "No-Look Nutmeg" is a suitably bass-heavy bruk workout laden with 8-bit electronics, while Xtra Brux's "Somebody" brilliant joins the dots between broken beat and two-step garage. Elsewhere, Trev's "For You Around Me" is a sumptuous chunk of summery and soulful dancefloor bliss, while Ishfaq's "Hypnosis No 9" is jazzy, synth-heavy and wayward in the best possible way.

Fired Up
Review: The Peoples Potential Unlimited quest to unearth the Atlantic boogie that time forgot continues unabated - this time reviving a1983 gem from Detroit's The X Man. Wrapped in an excellently presented sleeve, the somewhat mysterious X-Man supposedly had what should have been a fruitful musical career cut short by a 30 year stint in a Motor City psychiatric hospital. This was no obstacle for PPU however, who were granted the master tapes to press up "That Body" and "Fired Up" at 45rpm on a nice fat twelve! There's an undeniable funk swagger to "That Body" which sounds like Jimmy Edgar if he was a child of the 70s - in a word, killer. The B Side proto hip-hop bump of "Fire It Up" proves to be just as infectious, driven by some loose limbed synth flourishes.

Fired Up (4:21)
Review: Peoples Potential Unlimited or PPU, is one of the freshest funk labels out there, whether serving up new funk sounds that sound old, or reissuing classic funk sounds that seem bang up to date. Often lo-fi in design but high in emotion, they make for party-starting gems with real swagger. This latest limited 7" is a reissue of a classic from The X-Man, who has apparently been locked away in the Detroit Psychiatric Hospital for the last 30 years. His aggressive funk style pairs driving drums and taught synths with libidinous vocal delivers and plenty of great guitar riffs. Here we have the driving 'That Body' paired with the more deep and bumping 'Fire Up'. Both bang.

Party Time (3:36)
Review: Almost five years have passed since we last heard from X Ray Ted, a Bristol-based party starter and champion turntablist best known for his occasional outings on Ghetto Funk. He's in typically funky form on his first ever vinyl outing, offering up two killer cut-and-paste workouts via a cheery Bomb Strikes "45". Both cuts are carefully crafted from largely familiar loops and samples, but tastefully enough done to ward off any accusations of cheesiness. A-side 'Mirror Ballin' is particularly potent, with the West Country producer peppering a tooled-up version of a familiar mid-tempo disco-funk groove with all manner of much-loved vocal samples. Flipside 'Party Time' lives up to its title, strengthening an even fierier disco-funk groove with the kind of cuts and samples guaranteed to get any dancefloor rocking.

Tribute To The Original Artform (4:10)
Review: Beat lovers stand up because this one is for you. Bristol beatsmith X-Ray Ted returns with another of his fire b-boy offerings, this time in the form of 'Doin' My Thing', an up-tempo outing that mixes up the old and the new. There is a reason this producer has been getting continued support from Craig Charles on BBC Radio, and this 7" is it. Big horns, great samples, flutes, an infectious vocal and rolling breaks provide the foundation for some dead good dance floor times.

Review: X-Ray Ted's 'Talkin' EP' finally hits vinyl, a format perfectly suited for its timeless classic vibe. On the A-side, 'Talkin' weaves strings, horns, and guitar riffs over rolling beats and bass, topped with soulful vocals. On the flip, 'So Much' exudes infectious energy, blending vocal refrains, guitars, and horns for a soulful groove. These tracks offer a glimpse into X-Ray Ted's upcoming debut album, showcasing his talent for blending old-school sounds with a modern twist. Limited to a run of 7"s on Bombstrikes, these vinyl grooves exude sunshine vibes and feel-good warmth, destined to fly off shelves.

Get Loose (acappella) (2:16)
Review: Fresh off the back of X-Ray Ted's debut album Moving On comes this instrumental/scratch tool version of 'Get Loose', one of the record's best-loved non single tracks. Prior to the full album's making and eventual completion, The Bristol-based DJ and producer had spent years honing his craft and refining his signature sound, which drew heavily on soul, funk, hip-hop and breaks; all of which were styles heavily indebted to the street battle breaks culture found in 90s New York and other major cities. 'Get Loose', the seventh track on the record, features British rappers Dr. Syntax and Elemental and is a fiery exploration of what it means to loosen oneself; the track features here in full original form, alongside its locked groove and acapella versions, the former of which samples an oldskool comedy set characteristic of the kinds of sources battle DJs would sift theirs from.

Review: Born on the French Island of Martinique, Louis Xavier later settled in France where he discovered the freedom of jazz, and an idea to mix his influences into a global melting pot of sound. He formed his band (Synchro Rhythmic Eclectic Language) in Paris in the early '70s, making music that was both spiritual and eclectic for its time. Both tracks are jazz in essence but with instrumental funky rhythms infused with intricate percussion and electric keys.

Xin Ai (Searching For Love) (Karaoke version) (6:17)
Review: Originally written and produced by Japanese power couple Tatsuro Yamashita and Mariya Takeuchi in 1984, 'Xin Ai' stood out as one of the quintessences of Japanese city pop at the time. Later in 1991, it was covered with new Cantonese lyrics by Anita Mui; and now, over three decades later, yet another cover version surfaces again in Cantonese by Anita Mui, lending the song a completely fresh bedroom pop aura. Still retaining something ineffable of that 80s drum-machinic stuttery steeze and yet also recalling the decade's cusped interest in video game music as trailblazed by YMO, 'Xin Ai' comes in the form of a club mix and a karaoke version, and continues to push a well-documented stylistic yoke.

Review: Conjuring up the spirit of Mr Troutman himself, XL Middleton pays homage to the original source with this special vinyl-only jam. P-funk bass, lazy beats, cool synth squiggles and a subtle vocoder action, this is an authentic dedication to the sound that carved the west coast hip-hop sound. Complete with an instrumental, beats really don't come much funkier.

Back To LA (Vocoder version)
Review: Beautiful Cali-bound G-funk from one modern funk's most exciting musicians, XL Middleton. Fresh from conjuring the beats on Monique's album, here he is dropping two blistering slippery jams on Eddie Pendergrass. "All Right Now" is all about the endless splashes of squidgy bass and swooning synths while the b-side "Back To LA" takes more of a sentimental, minor key view straight from the Hollywood Hills. XL Middleton's first up 'I Can't Believe It' with its bright synth squirms, boogie bass and 80s drum machine sounds all topped off with plenty of cosmic funk and hip-swinging magic. Review: XL Middleton's first 45rpm on the mighty Star Creature Universal Vibrations label is a majestic collab with the amazing Saucy Lady. 'Daydreaming' is pure good time music, packed with sunshine and to-die-for boogie baselines that wiggling away beneath jazz-funk chords and funked up drums. It's an irresistible jam as the temps go up, and if for someone reason you want to hear it without the effortlessly cool vocal, you can flip this 7" over for a fine instrumental jam. With debuts as good as this, the label is sure to want more from XL - we certainly do.

He hails from Rome and is a young and innovative producer who draws from jazz, broken beat, house and soul, and layers in a lasting love of percussions and grooves. His resulting concoctions are both dancefloor-friendly and artistically rich as they mix up traditional and contemporary influences, as shown here. These are lush broken beats with alluring vocal samples, meaningful chords and plenty of cosmic flourishes. Review: While he may have been spotted in Gentlemen's Dub Club amongst other festival friendly acts, as Xoa Nick Tyson is going it alone to create globe-trotting sounds that speak to his musicianship and keen instinct for other kinds of grooves. There are in fact additional vocal spots on this EP including Anthony Joseph and Monika Liu, but the record is definitely pulled together by Tyson's focused, refined vision. "In So" is a notable delight with its skittering beat and laconic guitar lines. Watch out for the B side though, where the tracks get appropriate club revisions. Byron The Aquarius' remix particularly stands out, injecting some broken beat bump into "In So".

Review: XOA continues to lay out a formidable interpretation of African-infused dance music for the modern age, following on from lauded appearances on Shake, One House and Soundway. Alongside Contours, he comes to Banana Hill with some next level transcendental head-quaking business that reaches from the roots of Afrobeat right through to contemporary FX dubbing business. "Too Much Talking" is a proper eyes-closed roller for the hazy moment in the dance, and "Express" ramps things up to a strident tempo layered with a barrage of congas and djembes. The hectic pace is offset by swooning melodies, all wistful synth splashes and plucky guitar chops, stirring the soul as much as the feet.

Review: Last year Leon Atter made his debut as Xtra Brux on CoOp's third "Selectors Assemble" compilation, following it up earlier this year with a track on Dance Regular's debut EP. Here he returns to the latter label with his first solo EP. First up is "Dubz 4 Dancerz", a deliciously dirty fusion of heavy, garage-style bass, crunchy broken beats and sweaty vocal snippets. It's followed by the similarly inclined "I Need U", which sounds like the kind of weighty, loose-limbed roller that we can imagine Toddla T dropping, and the UKG/broken beat fusion of "Hush", whose cut-up vocal snippets doff a cap to Todd Edwards. To round things off Atter reaches for the wobble bass and organ stabs with great success on "Deep Down Inside".

Review: Daxwood Records, led by Doyle Wood, unearths another gem from its rich archives with the release of XXCEPTION TO THE RULEia female duo featuring Vanessia Mathis and Daniela Curry. IZIPHO SOUL proudly presents two previously unreleased tracks from 1982, now available on 7" vinyl for the first time. The A-side, 'The Sweeter the Juice', is an infectious dancer driven by a funky, 'squelchy' bassline and powerful, soaring vocals. It's a groove that feels timeless, ready to ignite any soul night in 2024. On the flip, 'Angel in Disguise' offers a supreme ballad of the era, with Vanessia's emotive voice taking centre stage. The late Eldridge McMillan's piano solo is subtle yet packed with feeling, adding an extra layer of depth to the track. This release is a must for soul collectors, showcasing Daxwood's legacy and IZIPHO SOUL's dedication to preserving these rare musical moments.

It's a formula he's used successfully on two albums for Good Morning Tapes, as well as this fantastic third full-length missive. Deep, immersive, lightly off-kilter, sample-rich, effects-heavy and expressively atmospheric, the six tracks on show blend immersive sound design and collage style construction with nods to ambient dub, pitched-down lo-fi house, trip-hop, out-there ambient techno and the kind of huge-sounding-but-soft-focus ambient experimentalism so beloved of the Astral Industries label.

Review: Few jazz albums are quite as obscure or sought-after as Ndikho Xaba & The Natives self-titled debut album. Recorded in 1969 at the height of South Africa's oppressive apartheid regime, it was initially issued in 1971 and in recent years has become a hugely in-demand album. This first official reissue makes the set available to a wider audience for the first time. For those with an interest in jazz - be it African or not - it should be an essential purchase. While there are traditional and Western influences throughout, Xaba and his collaborators blended these with hints of African dance music, heavy tribal drums and more than a touch of freestyle attitude. The result is a unique set that sounds as fresh and exciting now as it did 44 years ago.

Review: His twelfth album in as many years, G-funk enthusiast XL Middleton should be known to all boogie devotees. Opening with two synth-charmed instrumental jams, things get real as the Chromeoisms of "High On Your Love" start nagging at your singalong psyche and the Zapp & Rodgers-style robo-erotica of "Exception To The Rule" kick in midway. By the time you've jittered and spluttered to the crazed slap-bass of "I'm Ready" and swooned to the retro R&B delights of "You Know It's True" you'll be ready to rewind and press play all over again. Liquid brilliance.
