High (3:24)
In The Dust (3:30)
Review: Mishell Ivon and Vincent Kwok are back and combining their skills once more with this brilliant bouncy new funk outing on The Sleepers. The first tune on this pocket-rocket of a 7" is 'High', a funky weapon that is high on life and built around well-syncopated drums and a percussive bassline. The icing on the cake is Mishell's vocals which weave in out of the synth stabs and lush keys, all of which are well arranged. Flip it over and you'll get lost in the funk once more with 'In The Dust' with its masterfully rhythmic bassline and more of those buttery Mishell vocals.

Bully Boy - "Central Train"
Vibes4yoursoul - "Delicious"
Review: French label Act Of Sedition returns this week with another splendid 7' double pack. A1 is Mikeandtess with a nice edit titled 'Preacher Man' that's seriously Dusty and slo-mo as you like it, while Oldchap's 'Big At The Jazz Club' chugs along just as slowly with its locomotive and jazzy groove with rap vocals. Over on the second disc, Bully Boy gets the late night boogie-down vibes in effect on 'Central Train' followed by Vibes4yoursoul with the sunny and low slung goodness of 'Delicious'.

Lego Edit & Vito Lalinga - "Afro Funky Now" (3:32)
Review: Wilfully slapdash label Legofunk are behind some of the most infectious contemporary funk productions out today. This 3-tracker 12" comes as a trifecta of productions from The Rebel, PCJ Project, ad Vito Lalinga, all edited by the sum of their parts, Lego Edit. These are certified warmer-uppers for parties that like to dangle the essence of funk and disco on a more beatgriddedly patient tip before the noses of partygoers, before eventually giving up the gooey vocal goods.

Use It Before You Lose It (3:02)
Review: The Fania label dives into Latin and Brazilian funk and jazz here on a special one-sided 7" that offers up Bobby Valentin's dancefloor classic 'Use It Before You Lose It.' This low-key cult classic has become hard to find at an affordable price and is a real favourite with those who know. It is three superb sweet minutes of busy and percussive funk rawness with shuffling samba undertones. The guttural vocals are impossible to genre and the jazzy keys are the icing on a fruity cake.

Bottled (feat Elzhi & Jessica Care Moore) (3:44)
Review: Detroit rapper Valid's 'I'm Blessed', a bona-fide party-starter produced by DJ Dez Andres, was largely missed by most funk and hip-hop DJs when it first appeared on his limited-edition Mihaljo album back in 2019. Funk Night Records have decided it's time that the track found a bigger audience though and have pressed it onto a must-have '45'. The track itself is a bustling chunk of flute-sporting, funk-fuelled hip-hop that reminded us a little of the similarly-minded fare regularly served up by Bristol duo the Allergies. Over on the flip you'll find something deeper and more laidback: the slow and low sweetness of 'Bottled', featuring guest vocals from Elzhi and Jessica Care Moore.

I Can't Get Along Without You (6:37)
I Can't Get Along Without You (instrumental) (6:36)
Review: Kalita has already served up some seriously good reissues, but their latest may well be the most essential yet. It's the first licensed reissue of Vance and Suzzanne's sole single from 1980, "I Can't Get Along Without You" - a Larry Levan favourite that was only ever pressed in small quantities first time around. In it's A-side vocal form, the track is a deliciously warm and loved-up duet that mixes rich, mid-tempo New York disco grooves with some of the heady, glassy-eyed musicality of Philadelphia soul. It's genuinely magical - a super-sweet cut that sounds like end-of-night gold. Like the original 1980 private pressing on Vanton Records, the Kalita edition is backed by the similarly sweet, atmospheric Instrumental Mix, but this time we're also treated to a never-before-seen press photo, and extensive interview-based liner notes.

High Accord - "You Are (My Number One Priority)" (Inkswel remix)
Review: Those with a passion for '80s electrofunk, boogie, synth jams, machine soul and proto-house should already be aware of Inskwel and Benny Badge's Hot Shot label. The imprint specializes in delivering fresh music inspired by those sounds. Here, the Australian duo gathers together a superb selection of contemporary revivalist sounds from like-minded souls. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the rubbery bass and vintage synths of First Touch's "Sure Feels Good To Me" and Jupiter Gang's bodypoppin' electro workout "America", to the deep proto-house of Paradise Box's "Slave 2 Knowledge" and Inkswel's acid-tinged midtempo deep house rework of High Accord's "You Are (My Number One Priority)". Review: The well-loved compilation series Too Slow To Disco is back with another excellent double 7" package on its How Do You Are? label. Long time label associate Vibes4YourSoul is on the buttons and brings some lush and sunny Brazilian grooves. 'Brilhante' kicks off with a hip swinging, gentle funk groove, 'Pra Voce' has gorgeous spoken word Portuguese vocals over the top of tin pot percussion and swaying drums and 'Confusao' ups the samba element with acoustic strings and brit whistles. 'Joia Da Bahia' closes down with a fat bottomed and funky deep house styled sound with lush instrumentation from Latin America.

Happy Lobster (2:11)
Review: As part of the label's 15th birthday celebrations, the Tramp Records crew has decided to serve up some seriously heavy deep funk. Given that the imprint first found fame championing similarly weight, B-Boy-friendly funk jams, it's rather fitting. The two showcased tracks come courtesy of St Petersburg band the Vicious Seeds, who have slowly been picking up plaudits since making their vinyl debut in 2016. A-side "Illegal Delivery" is something of a dancefloor beast, with razor-sharp guitars riding sweaty, all-action funk drums and a booming, metronomic bassline. "Happy Lobster", on the other hand, is a little more relaxed but no less potent, with the Russian combo wrapping jazzy guitar motifs around a bustling groove.

Monthly Rainfall (4:31)
Review: Spasibo Records present a fresh 7" by the Vicious Seeds, hailing from St. Petersburg. With vibraphonist Pavel Chizhik taking centre stage (Chizhik isn't usually a member of the band), 'Village Hassle' makes for a cleverly collaborative rare groove and instrumental reggae-soul release. The titular A-side flaunts Chizhik's vibraphone via the mix alone, fleshing out its low-end elements against a driven instrumental backbeat; 'Monthly Rainfall', meanwhile, goes for all-out slow-jammed soul by way of cross-sticked snares and offbeat chord plucks run through short-release springs.

Review: A serious double-up adventure from Mousetrap right here... First up is a rarity from 60s LA Latin funk firebrands The Village Callers. Only spotted on their 1968 Live album, the Ray Charles cover has been remastered and presented with subtlety. Flip for some UK fuzz funk fusionists Pneumania. "I Can See Your Face" buzzes with all manner of influences from the heady, languishing prog twists we're submersed in a harder rockier groove that shows the tell-tale signs which eventually paved the way for revered punk act UK Decay. A highly interesting and broad release.

Review: A very useful, sample-heavy pair of joints here on the newly mined Vinyl Stream Champs label out of the US. They combine a welsh of funk, soul, hip hop and r&b vibes on one 7" that has been aptly named 'Bitch Better Have.' The title track starts with some iconic funky riffs, female vocal seduction up top and mid-temp beats to get things going. Red Cactus (3:21)
Issmak (3:05)
Review: First launched way back in the early 2000s, 4 Hero man Marc Mac's Visioneers project - which also features extensive contributions from fellow producer Luke Parkhouse - has tended to be a vehicle for his love of jazz and hip-hop. This two-track seven-inch single is a little different though. Title track 'Red Cactus', for example, sounds like an all-live mixture of heavy funk, the Chemical Brothers' sample-rich 'Block Rockin' Beats' and the kind of library funk that once appeared on the soundtracks of obscure spaghetti westerns. Flipside 'Issmak' is, if anything, even funkier and heavier - a kind of Blaxploitation-late 60s spy movie soundtrack mash-up full to bursting with heavy drum breaks, heavier bass and flanged guitar licks aplenty.

Hurts So Bad (instrumental) (3:37)
Review: After a ton of anticipation, Marc Mac's Visioneers project made a fine return late last year with a new album that delivered everything fans love and more. It was a mix of classic hip-hop reimagined, B-boy anthems and jazzy, funky lounge originals of the sort that are all staples of the Visioneers sound. The inclusion of guest musicians from around the globe added real richness to the compositions and now two of the standouts get cut to 45 rpm. 'Raid' is a nice laid-back funk roller with cute melodies over lazy drums that bring to mind a gentle afternoon in the park. Flip it over for 'Hurts So Bad' (instrumental) which is just as airy and organic.

Today (dub)
Review: This 45rpm features alternate versions of tracks from Marc Mac's Visioneers project. As always with Visioneers, the album reimagined hip-hop's foundational sounds and often started from scratch and focused on a key sample from the original track. Whether recontextualising a classic or creating something entirely new, the hallmark of a Visioneers record is its live instrumentation, which belies Marc Mac's ability to manipulate hip-hop's signature swing with a new type of mastery. 'What It Mean' and 'Today' are both standout from the album.

Shower Me With Love (Lord) (5:31)
Shower Me With Love (Lord) (Promo mix) (4:18)
Review: Those who watch the X-Factor may remember Voices With Soul; the trio, which is made up of three female members of the Campbell family (Grace, Hilda and Corene) reached the last six of the TV talent competition back in the late noughties. Here, they're in full-on contemporary gospel mode, layering their impassioned, righteous vocals over a lushly produced, slow-burning backing track full of chiming synthesizer melodies, bustling synth bass and tumbling electronic sax solos. Arguably even better is the flipside "Promo Mix", which doffs a cap to classic British street soul - a homegrown 1980s variant that is constantly overlooked by dance music scholars - via tactile hip-hop beats and Soul II Soul style production.

Le Disco Des Capitales (6:45)
Review: Sounds like it came out of Lagos in 1971, actually written and recorded in Lyon in 2015: Voilaaa is the brainchild of Bruno Hovart whose long relationship with Favorite goes way back to his days as Patchworks, Mr President and The Dynamics. Recording on a whole host of vintage machines and calling upon local African singers both cuts have a real authentic sense of realness; "Spies Are Watching Me" drives with big horns and swooning strings which isn't dissimilar to the work of The Movers, while the TY Boys-esque "Le Disco Des Capitales" is a heavier, more concentrated slab of floor-minded disco where the groove takes more of a forefront role. Apparently there's a whole album of this cooking... We can't wait to hear it.

Review: A warm welcome back to Bruno Hovart's Voilaaa project, traditionally a revivalist Afro-disco vehicle best known for 2015 dancefloor smash 'Spies Are Watching Me'. 'Fache', featuring Pat Kalla, explores similar sonic territory, with punchy Afrobeat horns, woozy chords and crunchy clavinet licks rising above a low-slung, hypnotic, dub disco-meets-Afro-boogie groove. It comes accompanied by a fine, effects-laden instrumental dub and a trio of similarly tasty bonus cuts: the warming, early garage-house and deep house influenced 'Trouble Travel' (featuring Jai-Nah), the languid, soulful and Latin-influenced 'Too Young To Die (featuring Olivia)' and the Afro-speckled disco-goes-jazz-funk loveliness of 'Trop Jeune Pour Sa'.

Review: Berlin-based Voodoocuts knows how to mix up floor-filing sounds from across a range of genres and eras. Now the sonic shapeshifter serves up a first EP for Adeen that packs in five killer cuts. 'La Culebra' kicks off with big horns and Latin rhythms which carry on through the dance-heavy 'Mi Amor'. 'B-boy Paco' completes the first side of vinyl with lively rhythms, horn stabs and florid Spanish vocals. 'Que Rico' kicks off on the flip with another dense arrangement packed with cowbells, funky bass riffs, woodblock hits, shakers and plenty more. 'Linda Negra' is a sleazy yet seductive samba shuffle that brings the heat and will get any party heated up.

Review: This latest addition to the Legofunk series is sure to precipitate somatic reactions, whether floorbound crowds like it or not. On the A, Voodoocuts pins down a massive Latin / Afro-funk boogaloo edit for 'Ray's Delight', topped off by trilling trumpets and palm-outstretched piano chords. On the B, Tommy Manero gets samplier with it, collapsing the spatial-temporal plane between breakdance and salsa for 'B-Boy Chunga'.

Review: And so it is that we say a teary goodbye to Claremont 56's superb Originals series of decidedly Balearic compilations. While a bespoke vinyl box set featuring tracks from the series is due at the end of September, this is the last official installment. This time round, NYC-based, Tokyo-raised Frenchman Alex From Tokyo is the man at the controls. Predictably, his selections are spot on, from the laidback, jazz guitar-flecked bliss of his own Tokyo Black Star re-edit of Pepe California's "Meli-Fali", and the wide-eyed synth-Balearica of Violets' "Sunset", to the tongue-in-cheek post-disco funk of Electric Guitars' "Night Bears", and the 1983 proto-house/boogie dubbiness of Tia Monae's "Don't Keep Me Waiting (Dub Mix)". In other words, it's as impeccable and essential as the rest of the series.

The time is surely right, then, to drop his first commercially available mix CD. As you'd expect, it's firmly rooted in soul, effortlessly joining the dots between disco-funk, jazz, slow jams, global beats and summery Latin flavas. Opening with the Universal Robot Band's impeccable "Dance and Shake Your Tambourine", Culture Shock sits somewhere between a particularly good radio show and a dancefloor-bating mix-up, making it perfect for home listening. LillyLillyGood, which shares its name with a monthly party and label Attias runs, was inspired by Attias's desire to present "really good grooves that people want to dance to or listen to or home". He's done just that, whizzing through an unmixed selection that giddily flits between trippy, polyrhythmic acid madness (Grooveman Spot), jaunty jazz-funk (Freeeze, Cro Magnon's ultra-deep hook-up with Roy Ayers), synth-fuelled broken beat business (Tatham, Mensah, Lord and Ranks), deliciously spacey deep house (the Zanzibar remix of Nicole Willis's "Curiosity") and killer disco (Attias's own edit of Velvet Hammer's "Party Hearty").

Review: With 'breaking' making its debut in the 2024 Paris Olympics, it seems an apt time to go back to where it all began and showcase some of the music that first made break-dancers move in the early years of hip-hop culture. Soul Jazz Records clearly agrees, hence this two-disc retrospective of early 'breaker' favourites curated by Arthur Baker - a man who's productions and remixes soundtracked many dancefloor battles in the early 80s. It's a suitably strong selection all told, with dusty funk, soul and funk-rock favourites (Johnny Bristol, James Brown, The Jimmy Castor Bunch, Spanky Wilson) being joined by disco-funk jams (Herman Kelly and Life), extra-percussive workouts (Manu Dibango, Mongo Santamaria, Candido) and a smattering of key Baker productions (Afrika Bambaata and Soul Sonic Force's 'Planet Rock' and his own infectious 'Breakers Revenge').

Naturally, he's been asked to mix up the latest series of DJ Kicks and, ladies and gentlemen, it's a real masterclass - one of those comps you can safely leave on and let it do its thing on you. The mood is personified by a fine blend of electronics and tougher, funkier rhythms by artists such as Index, Moon B, and Dam himself. There are also a few rare cuts by Chicago house legend Gemini that fit in perfectly, and a whole heap of wavy, Cali-inspired electronic funk. Badass.

Review: It would be fair to say that Bristolian selector Andy Smith has extremely deep crates. It's for this reason that he's been responsible for tons of killer compilations over the years. This one, the second in his disco, boogie and proto-house focused "Reach Up" series, is another gem. It cheerily moves between disco old and new, mixing tried-and-tested classic cuts from the likes of the New Jersey Connection, Ted Taylor, Chain Reaction and The Gibson Brothers with more recent retro-futurist cuts (see his subtly house-friendly re-edit of Will Session and Amp Fiddler's superb "Lost Without You" and Full Intention and Nick Reach Up's modern electrofunk treat "Night of My Life"). While confirmed disco enthusiasts may own some of the tracks already, there's enough lesser known goodness to make the compilation an essential purchase.

Review: You have to admire the depth and variety of DJ Muro's record collection. The renowned crate digger's sprawling discography contains hundreds of mix CDs in a multitude of styles, from hip-hop, disco, boogie and obscure funk, to slow jams, Balearica and soundtrack instrumentals. Here, he delivers the third installment in his Super Funky Reggae Breaks series, once again digging deep to present a killer collection of largely obscure material. As usual, there's no track list - that would spoil the fun, after all - with the 28 tracks touching on ska, roots, dub, rocksteady, reggae-disco and, of course, "super funky reggae". It is, of course, a hugely entertaining romp from one of Japanese dance music's most versatile DJs.

Review: Japanese turntablist DJ Muro is fast becoming the undisputed king of the crate digging mixtape. Certainly, few around the world have released quite as many, or touched on quite as many styles. Astonishingly, he's clocked up well over 150 mixtapes and CDs since putting out the first King Of Diggin' set some 20 years ago. This latest missive follows a similar format to most of his excursions, joining the dots between a brilliant obscure (and, as is traditional, uncredited) selection of funk, funk-rock, jazz, soul and jazz-funk jams. It's wildly entertaining, of course, and many listeners will be left desperately searching online for some hint as to the track IDs.

Review: With a collection that takes in everything from jazz, hip-hop, soul, funk and boogie to house, garage and broken beat, DJ Spinna is in an ideal position to assess the work of Perception and Today Records, two of New York's more interesting underground labels of the last 50 years. Here he picks out two discs' worth of highlights from the imprints' combined catalogues, presenting a fuzzy mix of blistering funk (see Debbie Taylor's "Too Sad To Tell"), quirky jazz (Dizzy Gillespie), heavy soul (Madhouse), Latin flavours (Astrid Gilberto), string-laden sweetness (Black Ivory) and piano-laden sunniness (Tyrone Washington).

Review: For the latest volume in their crate-digging disco series, Under The Influence, Z Records has turned to long-serving British brothers Simon and Robin Lee AKA Faze Action. In keeping with the series' dusty-fingered ethos, there's plenty of brilliant rarities to set the pulse racing - see the smooth '80s boogie of Leston Paul's "All Nite Tonight", the sublime Afro-disco brilliance of Bebe Manga, the up-tempo hustle of Oscar Perry's "Body Movements" and the South American disco swirl of Don Lurio's "Ruba Ruba" - as well as a smattering of obscure versions of classic dancefloor hits (check Michele Claire's version of "In The Bush"). You'll also find a smattering of killer Faze Action edits, too, with their version of Midway's "Set It Out" and Mikki's freestyle-era boogie ham "Dance Lover" standing out.

Review: Given the runaway success of Melbourne-based funk and soul musicians in recent years - see the Bamboos, Kylie Audist, Cookin' On 3 Burners etc - it was arguably only a matter of time before some bright spark had the idea of celebrating the city's scene in compilation form. In the end, it's scene stalwarts Chris Gill and Lance Ferguson (the local super-producer behind most of the city's biggest soul hits) who've taken the plunge. Predictably, The Soul of Melbourne is a superb sales pitch for Victoria's funk scene, delivering a sun-flecked blend of deep soul, fuzzy trip-hop, blazing funk and sinewy modern soul, with plenty of little-known gems and quirky curiosities (see The Bombay Royale's Morricone-ish "The Flight Snake") to excite the diggers.

Review: Curated as part of the iconic street artist's Tate exhibition this year, The World Of Keith Haring unites many of the talented souls Keith knew, or was inspired by, during his prolific rise as one of the most vital cultural spokesmen through the 70s and 80s. Soundtracking the gritty downtown NYC streets he made his first mark on, this limited collection captures the whole melting pot from b-boy culture with cuts such as "E.T Boogie" and "Bump N Grind", raw boogie and soul ("Over & Over") and pure drama ("The Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us"). A powerful collection as striking and relatable as his own signature.

The hat-wearing MBE owner is celebrating 30 years of carnival parties this summer. What better excuse, then, for another breezy, party-centric trawl through the veteran DJ's epic record collection. As usual, the Good Times 30th Anniversary Edition features a selection of festival-friendly grooves, from dusty old disco, flute-sporting funk and classic soul to bouncy disco-house, head-nodding hip-hop and Red Stripe-swigging reggae riddims. By now, we all know what we're getting, but it's still great fun!

Review: You'd be forgiven for not knowing who Daniel Grau is. For starters, his 1970s and early '80s productions - a sun-kissed blend of fusion jazz, bossa-nova, simmering soul and cosmic disco - were only ever released in Venezuela. This surprise retrospective, put together by Jazzanova and Trujillo, offers an excellent introduction to his warm, immersive and summery sound. Unlike the more obviously uptempo vinyl version, this double CD mixes genuine dancefloor dynamite - see "Disco Fantasy", the hard disco-funk of "Skylab" and the deliciously stargazing "Tren Del Espacio"- with hazy songs (the brilliant "Beside Me", for starters) and tactile, downtempo instrumentals. Excitingly, the collection also includes a brand new cut, "To Night", which is Grau's first recording in over 30 years.

Review: For anyone with even the smallest interest in gospel music and its relationship with black American dance music, Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's "Praise" series of mix CDs should be essential listening. Volume six, subtitled "A Prayer For Peace, Love & Wisdom", is every bit as inspired as its predecessor, with Clausell moving between traditional choral gospel music, gospel soul, and soul-jazz, deep house and disco (including Crown Heights Affair's incredible "Say A Prayer") featuring suitably righteous lyrics. To tie the whole thing together, Clausell has also included a number of inspirational and thought-provoking spoken word samples taken from recordings of preachers and black community leaders. It's a brilliant touch.

Review: The 5th instalment of the definitive vinyl junkie compilation series is the world's first official breaks mix CD.'The Kings Of Diggin' series brings you a selection of rare and classic tracks hand-picked by the top names from the genre in question. Next up, Kon & Amir and DJ Muro blow the dust off some of their favourite hard-to-find vinyl breaks for the two-disc 'Kings Of Diggin' album. Kon Taylor and Amir Abdullah started as fans of hip-hop and then as the music slipped and slid into the mainstream, they worked backwards just to find a new and fresh sound through dusty vinyl. Amir is the Vice President of Sales and A&R at Fat Beats Distribution, and Kon is a fixture as a DJ in Boston and in NYC. Kon & Amir rose to recognition with their unofficial bootleg 'Ontrack' mixtape series, which took them to 'platinum' status on the streets. DJ Muro has been constantly reinventing the shape of Japanese hip hop for over ten years. As a DJ he has played venues over the world and is also well-known as a label owner, A&R producer and owner of the hip hop store Savage. His Blue Note & Stones Throw compilations for the Japanese market have both sold over 10,000 copies. The 5th instalment of 'The Kings Of Diggin' series features artwork from Rolling Stones photographer Michael Joseph. The CD also comes in a reversible English/Japanese package. The tracks on the album have never appeared on a compilation album before. Therefore the sounds are fresh, will make you smile, dance and start diggin' in the crates yourself.

Review: Released as a companion to Shawn Lee's superb documentary on the pioneers of Library Music - the simply titled 'The Library Music Film' - this killer compilation draws together pieces selected by some of the many DJs and producers who contributed to the movie. With lots of decidedly obscure tracks plucked from the catalogue of such legendary music libraries as KPM, Music De Wolffe, Bosworth and Tele Music. Highlights are plentiful, from the "Taxi" theme style slow burning jazz-funk of Tonio Rubio's "Bass In Action No. 1" and the skittish Blaxploitation-goes-easy listening bustle of Nick Ingman's "Tense Preparation", to the Moog-laden space funk insanity of Peter Thomas' "Coordinates Meeting".

Review: On his fourth exploration of the world of global "Adult Oriented Rock", French crate-digger Charles Maurice focuses on the period between 1977 and '86. That means a greater emphasis on synthesizers, dusty drum machines and the kind of sparkling melodies that would once have drifted from daytime radio at an alarming rate. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the dewy-eyed synth-soul of Arlana's "When You Call My Name" and the breezy boogie of Omega Sunrise's "Too Hip", to the sparse Balearic bliss of Isabelle Mayereau's "Orange Bleue", the flute-laden easy listening hum of Fernando Toussaint, the sax-happy '80s sleaze of Special Occasion's brilliant "Flyin' To Santa Barbara" and the jaunty Latino jazz-funk of "Mellow Out" by Pacific Dreams.

Review: Stereo Deluxe's Coming Home series must be one of the longest-running downtempo compilation strands around. Amazingly, it's been running for 12 years, offering horizontally inclined artists as Tim 'Love' Lee, Nouvelle Vague and Nightmares on Wax the chance to flex their selecting skills. This latest edition comes from Stereo Deluxe regulars and occasional bossa revivalists Mo Horizons. Predictably, their selection is heavy on Cuban jazz and bossanova flavours - see the horn-powered jubilation of "Avant Le Jazz" by Sugarloaf Gangsters - but also touches on funk (Speedometer), soul (Gregory Porter), dusty reggae (Phyllis Dillon), calypso (Jehro) and, erm, Paul Weller ("Wild Wood").

Review: Perennial crate-diggers BBE have long been capable of unearthing hidden gems and shining a light on long-forgotten scenes. Here, with the help of fellow vinyl-sniffer Mr Peabody, they highlight Chicago's little-known 1970s/early 1980s underground disco and boogie scene. For those reared on the familiar sounds of New York disco and boogie, it's something of a revelation. For this double vinyl edition of the release, Mr Peabody lifts his favourites from the 23 track double CD edition with eight specially edited versions. Certainly, there's plenty for disco enthusiasts to get excited about here, with everything from hustlin' party jams and essential 80s groove to crackly disco-funk and distinctly cosmic soul represented.

Review: Last week, we attempted to tot up the number of mix CDs released by celebrated Japanese crate-digger Muro since his emergence in the 1990s. We lost count at 150. What makes this achievement all the more remarkable is Muro's seeming ability to pack each themed release with material he's not used before, and tracks that will be fresh to all but the most obsessive and dusty-fingered record collectors. There's plenty to get excited about on this all-action mix of obscure 7" singles, which variously touches on dirty disco-funk, sumptuous, string-laden disco, curious instrumental jazz-funk, blazing funk, skewed soul and jaunty jazz. As usual, there's no tracklist, meaning you'll still be in the dark about Muro's amazing selections.

Review: Not content with unleashing a brilliant collection of obscure Japanese grooves under his DJ XXXL moniker, dusty-fingered nerd Muro delivers another admirable mix-up jam packed with unfamiliar versions of familiar favourites. As the Un Covered title suggests, the concept is simple: a mix of original versions of tracks later made more famous by cover versions, and lesser known covers of massive hits. Heavy on blistering funk and soul but also touching on jangly 60s pop and beardy foreign language versions of English hits, it's a thrill-a-minute ride that doesn't let up for 70-odd minutes.

Review: Thanks to its leftfield approach to spiritual jazz and jazz-funk fusion, Black Jazz Records has long been a favourite label of many hip-hop diggers. The label, which ran for six years from 1971 before disappearing into oblivion, spawned a string of now sought-after albums from the likes of Gene Russell, Doug Carn and Calvin Keys. Here, Japan's premier dusty-fingered DJ, Muro, drops his own tribute to the label, mixing together his favourite jams from the back catalogue. There's much to admire, from the spiritual looseness of The Awakening and Rudolph Johnson's breezy sax-and-piano workouts, to the funk-fuelled goodness of Roland Haynes (check the brilliant "Second Wave") and Calvin Keys (the fantastic "BK").

Review: Having offered up two previous mixes full to bursting with tongue-in-cheek New York disco classics and little-known underground anthems, this third instalment in the Horse Meat Disco series sees residents Jim, James, Luke and Severino broaden their horizons. The first disc, in particular, focuses more on recent disco scene hits, with notable re-edits from Gazeebo, Todd Terje and Leftside Wobble sitting next to contemporary productions from Mungolian Jet Set, Wild Geese and the Glimmers. Yet it's the second CD of lesser-known older nuggets - proto house, string-laden disco, wonky synth-pop etc -that really hits the spot, with a clutch of superb HMD re-edits, a dash of disco-funk and Marcel King's slept-on Hacienda classic "Reach For Love".

Review: Here's a serious dose of Brazilian boogie to get diggers rejoicing. Marcos Valle first released his self-titled album back in 1983, and now it's been given a generous remaster and reissue treatment from Vampi Soul. It's an album that glides from seriously funky party tracks to soft-focus ballads, with some of the sweet spots in between delivering the most memorable moments. Look no further than the slow but so damn groovy "Samba De Verao", or if you prefer something with a bit more swing then "Naturalmente" has you covered. A gold dust rarity from the annals of Latin music history given a much-deserved dusting down.
