I'm So Proud (reissue)
I'm So Proud (reissue) (7" + booklet)
Cat: CCR 006. Rel: 02 Oct 23
The Aswads - "I'm So Proud" (4:12)
The Naturall Band - "There Was" (3:46)
Review: Clap City is dropping some next-level heat right now for those who like their soul super sweet. This particular 7" - which comes with a booklet - is a reissue of Aswads' delightful 'I'm So Proud'. It is very much defined by its glorious male falsetto vocal, which is aided by some acoustic guitars and subtle but dramatic drumming that rises and falls to accompany the emotional roller coaster of the vocal line. Things sped right up for the high-speed funk case that is The Naturall Band's tight and intense 'There Was' on the flip. An absolute must-cop.

Everybody Loves The Sunshine (vocal) (4:35)
Everybody Loves The Sunshine (instrumental) (4:36)
Review: 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' represented a pivotal moment for Roy Ayers and Ubiquity as it marked a shift towards a funkier, more relaxed sound in 1976. It is one of his best-loved tunes as a result and always comes out when the weather warms up. That means it also often gets reissued, as it does here, as the track captures the essence of summer through joyful lyrics and a hypnotic groove. Ayers' vibraphone melodies intertwine seamlessly with the band's instrumentation while on the flip us an instrumental that offers a slightly different vibe. It all comes on nice yellow marbled vinyl.

The Kevin Fingier Collective - "Addis Ababa" (3:14)
Review: Fingier is Acid Jazz's new sub label for the multifarious works of Argentinian producer Kevin Fingier. Fingier touches on soul, R&B, boogaloo and raw funk in his music, and that's true once again on this collaboration with Abdoulaye Badiane. Badiane is originally from Senegal but now based in Argentina, and he's been travelling the world for 20 years teaching African music. Now he brings his musical heritage to bear on Fingier's funk, and the fusion is incredibly sweet and soulful. 'Kairo Bancou Moulu' has a 60s touch, while 'Addis Ababa' naturally takes its cues from the incredible legacy of Ethiopian jazz.

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (Flying Fish dub) (2:58)
Review: This one got a special Japanese Edition reissue in Spring last year but is such an in-demand delight that now comes other pressing. It finds Betty Black serving up her own sublime cover of Eurythmics' mega hit 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)'. She is a modern-day soul diva who used to vocalise UK garage tunes and now shows another side to her bow. She is backed up by The Family Fortune and adds plenty of 60s sass to the original which as well as including the full vocal version on the A-side, also has a more dubbed-out edit on the B-side.

The Blassics - "Flowman Break" (3:40)
Tatasomba - "Kalebaidoscope" (4:37)
Review: The Blassics is a multi-member collective known for the excellent blend of jazz, funk, afro and soul across a series of standout records over the last decade. They take care of the a-side of this red hot release from Funk Night with 'Flowman Break', a bubbling, loose limbed funk bumper that is full flavour and full of playful funk. Tatasomba's 'Kaleidoscope' is a little more paired back and coy, with a conversational bassline and jangling cow bells that keep you on the move.

Song For Ehi (7:04)
Song For Ehi (Bosq Disco dub) (7:03)
Review: You'd expect a collaboration between Columbia-based fusionist Bosq, Ibibio Sound System's horn section and vocalist Kaleta to be pretty darn good, and 'Song For Ehi' most certainly is. Inspired by a combination of classic Edo-funk, Afro-disco and reggae disco, the A-side original version delivers a near perfect mix of timbales-sporting dub disco grooves, reverb-laden lead vocals, Afro-funk guitar licks, Afrobeat-esque organ licks and punchy horns. The track's inherent dubbiness is further explored on the flipside revision, which adds extra layers of percussion and the kind of breathless dancefloor weight that marks out the greatest dub disco workouts. In a word: essential!

Andy Cooper - "Why You Buggin'" (feat The Allergies) (3:14)
Dr Syntax/Pete Cannon - "Downtime" (The Allergies remix) (3:27)
Review: More all-action fare from the popular Bomb Strikes label, an imprint that has gradually moved away from the party-hearty mash-ups and bootleg remixes on which it made its name. This tidy seven-inch single is notable for the presence of Bristol crew The Allergies. On the A-side they guest on Andy Cooper's "Why You Buggin", a bustling, funk-fuelled fusion of hip-hop and rock that sounds like a wholehearted tribute to the Beastie Boys circa "Licensed To Ill". Over on the flip the West Country party-starters turn remixers, delivering a head nodding, toe-tapping take on Dr Syntax and Pete Canon's hip-hop/funk/ska fusion number "Downtime". Like the A-side, it sounds like a bona fide dancefloor bomb.

Review: Hold on tight for this first transmission from new funk label The Influence from US It kicks off with a limited edition blue 7" featuring a pair of tunes that are built on big funky breaks. The Cowbell Brothers open up with 'Too Hot to Handle' which is a super cool joint with smooth bars over leggy drums and nice breaks. Double A - "You Feel Alright?" (3:47)
The Gaff - "High Life" (45 edit) (3:42)
Review: Mountain Records are a new funk label, pushing 45's cut with new funk tinged with a modern production sheen. Two label mainstays decorate each side of this one: for the A, Double A asks 'You Feel Alright?' We certainly do, not least thanks to the artist's heavy locking down of sampled big boom drums, funky grooves and evil laughter. The Gaff meanwhile offers up a breakbeat banger to the altar, letting up on bass for a weird, flauting finish. 7"s collectors, watch out.

Melbourne Douglas - "Rude Boy Don't Fight" (2:50)
King Deadly - "Joshua A Mek Riddim Run" (2:46)
Review: Having already delivered a multi-artist EP of Reggae Dynamite earlier in the year, nostalgia-fired producer Neil Anderson serves up a speedy sequel on his popular Original Gravity label. Toaster Melbourne Douglas kicks things off with the ska-flavoured cheeriness of 'Rudy Skanking on the Moon', before returning later in the EP with slowed-down, rocksteady style reggae fuzziness of 'Rude Boy Don't Fight'. Elsewhere, label regulars (sorry) the Regulators deliver a high-tempo, Hammond-heavy instrumental workout (the excellent 'Caymanas Park Rocket'), while King Deadly layers languid organ solos over a more dub-wise groove on EP standout 'Joshua a Mek Riddim Run'.

The Bus Stop Band - "Fatback" (3:57)
Review: From the aquatically-focused Pirahna & The Posse Productions crew, the Octoposse label has a simple premise, to give you bang tidy rub downs of crucial funk cuts. No nonsense, just a razor sharp instinct for razor and tape in pursuit of the good groove. They kicked off some four years ago with edits of Dexter Wansel and Pleasure, and now they're going in on a smoking hot 7" featuring one of the greatest cuts The Fatback Band ever committed to tape. '(Are You Ready) Do The Bus Stop' is widely considered one of the best in all of funkdom, and for good reason. As well as a funked up remix on the A-side, you get a smouldering instrumental ride out on the flip, all the better to get those bodies locked in rhythm.

Review: The esteemed Kalinda label serves up this glorious two-track soul and jazz release featuring Mavis John and The Red Stripe Band and we are here for it. It's a warming and funky rhythm overload with organic percussion and backed by lush chords as the Mavis vocal teases, pleases and seduces. All Your Love (single edit) (3:33)
Curtis (single edit) (3:44)
Review: Our Label Records has never been prolific - this release is just their 19th vinyl outing since 2005 - but the imprint's catalogue is packed to the rafters with soul and funk-fired musical gold. This 45 contains more must-have material in the form of lightly edited versions of two tracks from last year's collaborative full-length from Hamburg-based band The Angels of Libra and Irish vocalist Nathan Johnston. 'All of Love' is a smooth, nostalgic chunk of deep soul in which Johnston sings sweetly and emotionally atop an attractive bed of rubbery bass guitar, shuffling funk style drum-breaks, glistening guitars and heavy horns. Flip-side 'Curtis', meanwhile, is a sultry, simmering, string-laden number of the sort that were once Curtis Mayfield's stock-in-trade.

It's an inspired and Afro-infused groove exploration with funk, disco and acrobat all bottle dup in the beats that traverse Afria from East to West. Review: Cliff Nobles's northern soul gem 'My Love Is Getting Stronger' is a vital part of the cannon that gets a welcome reissue here by the good folk at Matasuna. It is an empowering tune with some hugely impressive drumming, plenty of big horns and a big bongo bridge that builds the vibe. ON the flip side is an equally essential but rather different tune, 'The Bold.' It is a funky, jazz tinged workout with cosmic chords and more exceptional stick work. Both tracks were initially released in 1966 on Atlantic Records but have since become hard to source. Do not sleep.

This is the artists first venture on to wax and both of these prove he is surely one to watch in 2021. Review: Is there a more celebrated combination in all of reggae than Lee Perry & The Upsetters? The master producer and his iconic backing band laid down many of the genre's most vital sounds and helped subtly evolve it across the seventies and beyond. This single 'Jungle Lion' came right in the midst of that in 1974. An original 7" will cost you upwards of 500 quid, and that's if you can find one. Here it gets reissued on the young but already well-formed Skank & Groove label and is backed with a version by The Upsetters named 'Freak Out Skank' that gets even more warm, cavernous and dubby.

Review: Experienced Japanese singer Anna Soto and jazz-funk multi-instrumentalist Toshiyuki Sasaki have offered up a number of collaborative singles of late, each of which has been given the re-edit treatment by one-man production line Ryuhei The Man. As with the other recent Sato/Sasaki releases he's tweaked, Ryuhei offers up two edits of 'Okuribushi', a bustling affair that combines traditional Japanese vocals and instrumentation (and specifically the sound of the shansin, a three-stringed instrument from Osaka) with driving drums that sit somewhere between celebratory disco and the jazz stylings of Max Roach. The superior version - for us, at least - is the full vocal A-side edit, though some may prefer Ryuhei's instrumental take.

Review: Soul Junction revisits the Scot-Tees Capri master tapes here to unveil two previously unreleased tracks. First is 'My Sweet Polly' by The Scott Brothers, a late 60s dance tune inspired by Howard Scott's former girlfriend. Coupled with this is a studio version of Judson Moore's "Everybody Push & Pull," a crossover hit influenced by Rufus Thomas. The Scott Brothers evolved from the 'Elpeccios' in 1958 to the Scott Brothers Band in 1963 and were instrumental in Chicago's music scene. Their label, Capri Records, produced hits like 'We Like Girls' and worked with legends like Garland Green. Which is why Dr Packer steps up here with two versions of their 'At Midnight' classic. 'Be Black Baby' is a proud celebration of his race at a time when it was no doubt hugely risky to do so - right in the midst of the civil rights movement's peak days. The outfit founded in 1969 and continued recording until the mid 1990s, but it's for their late '70s and early '80s synth-laden sevens that they're arguably best known. These tracks are drawn from the band's sole 1982 album, Reachin' For It, which is listed on Discogs for over L700, so not one for the feint-hearted. Of course, just because something is rare and expensive doesn't make it good, but Jimmy Thomas's 1969 cut 'Springtime' is genuinely brilliant. Released when funk-rock was arguably at its height, it sees the legendary soul man belting out Alan de Roches' lyrics over a Hammond-heavy fusion of soul, funk and Hendrix-style heavy rock. This time round, it comes backed with a relatively hard to find - on vinyl, at least- chunk of reggae/soul/rhythm & blues from iconic Jamaican singer Owen Grey. It's superb, of course, but we still prefer the incendiary A-side.

Flip it over and you will get the more loose limbed groove of 'Do Your Funky Strut' with its suggestive horns and elastic bass lines.

It's Just An Illusion (Coming To Ya) (instrumental)
Review: Backatcha Records dig into the vaults of New Jersey producer Randy Irwin for Toast's 1983 disco masterpiece 'It's Just An Illusion.' Toast was a band of Baltimore singer-songwriters and well-known New York session players and this was the only release on Irwin's Charm City imprint. But it is a belter. A slow motion tune with the sort of deep cut drums that sink you in for the ride, with lush flutes, sensuous falsetto vocal delivery and funky little guitar riffs. Flip it over for the instrumental version which allows the drum work to really shine.

Review: Floating Points reissued the 1976 debut album Open Soul from Chicagoan soul/jazz-funk fusionists six-member outfit Tomorrow's People on his Melodies International imprint. Now P-Vine serve up a couple of singles from it, one of which has had a T Groove edit. Spanning a wide range of soul and jazz-funk styles, 'Open Soul' has a rubbery bassline and sock chord work with some big vocals and smooth grooves. It is an epic trip into space-soul territory. On the flip is 'It Ain't Fair', a much more slow and sentimental cut with romantic vocals and yearning chords.

Review: Since guitarist Tomayasu Takeuchi's first album as Tomoyastone, Breaks & Torus, wasn't pressed to wax, Japanese imprint At Home Sound has decided to offer-up a string of seven-inch singles showcasing the set's most potent tracks. The latest opens with 'Sunrise Dance', a gnarled and low-slung affair with Takeuchi's glistening, sun-bright guitar parts and kaleidoscopic musical textures provide a counter-balance to a heavyweight funk groove that was seemingly inspired by a mixture of Barbarra's 'Shack Up' and Herman Kelly & Life's 'Dance To The Drummer's Beat'. Takeuchi opts for a jazzier feel to his fluid guitar solos on flipside number 'Plute Funk', a more laidback but no less club-ready affair that's little less than audible sunshine.

Review: Jazz Peace has been digging in the archives to put together this new and limited 12", 'Happy Tears'. The original 1975 studio sessions captured the essence of Stockholm, Sweden, with tracks from the unreleased album Wildlife. Recorded during a pivotal moment in the mid-70s, this 45 offers up raw, unfiltered material that offers a glimpse into the creative process of the era. The music blends rich instrumentation with experimental flair that delivers a unique sound that's both nostalgic and timeless.

UR (3:32)
Review: A true Texan soul rarity, Athens Of The North have outdone themselves in reissuing this word-of-mouth classic. Trace Of Smoke's only single under the name, 'U.R.', originally came out in 1982 on the tiny friends-and-family-run Austin label B.J. Records. However, legend has it that the song might have existed up to a decade earlier. Being the first Black band in Austin to play white clubs in the 1970s, only the vaguest memories of their performances of 'U.R.' and 'Treasure Mind' survive, lending to the exorbitant prices fetched by the original pressings. Disco-soul fusion of peak quality, from the band later known as Karizma.

Incredible Bongo Flute (2:45)
Review: Bring a little soulful topical jungle into your life with this super limited little 7" from French label Aldente. The a-side from The Tropical Combo features Jazzamar and has languid rhythms and organic drums overlaid with bird calls, mad percussion, steamy vocal whispers and plenty of flutes, trumpet blasts and general playfulness. On the flipside, things pick up with a 60s style spy theme chase lead by florid flute and bongos, driving rhythms and a big keys. 'Incredible Bongo Flute,' then, does exactly what it says on the tin.

Review: Boogie and funk don Tim Tucker hails from Northern Cali and is half of the Love Cryme duo. He has been digging in his vaults to offer up two songs for this limited new vinyl release on Trusechool and they have both been reworked by Knoe1. First up is the brilliantly blissed-out boogie and retro synth work of 'U Cant Run' complete with a sultry vocal that soon gets under the skin. 'Disco Lights' (Knoe1 rework) then keeps it deep and smoochy with jumbled disco percussion and noodling jazz chords all topped off with some superb synth work. Two real gems here, then, on a mad-limited 7".

Review: Before I Die is a new mini label that is curated by Aficionado Recordings's Jason Boardman. The head turning first release comes from guitar based instrumental outfit Tungusku. They have a global sound rooted in hypnotic rhythms and are made up of Phil Ratcliffe on guitar and James Defty on bass, who you may known from having worked often with The Mouse Outfit. Their take on psyched-out, jazz tinged and funked-up sounds owes a debt to the likes of Tommy Guerro and Khruangbin but with added stoner vibes and low end beats and Balearic magic. The art work is beauty, too.

Review: Like Chromeo before them, Tuxedo are one of those new wave boogie outfits who know exactly how to capture the infectious funk of the early to mid 80s and write their own sweet soul tracks with those distinctive chops. After a successful run on Stones Throw they established their own Funk On Sight label to carry their wares, and that's exactly where they land after a brief hiatus with the buttery smooth 'Don' My Best'. It's everything you want a boogie track to be, with a wiggly worm of a Moog b-line running underneath the crisp beats, sharp claps, cool keys and slick vocals. If you're into boogie, you can't help but jam to this one.

You're In Love (Kon dub)
Review: Ubiquity's super-collectable Luv N Haight series continues with immaculate aplomb. Here we find Kon applying his crafty edit knife to Twilight's 1986 soul boogie smoocher "You're In Love". The remix carries the full honey-coated vocals while the dub switches the focus to the groove with subtle flourishes of the vocal. A spotless contempory rework.... And, as the seventh volume, it's fittingly the first in the series to be served on 7". Nice touch.

Review: Released the same week as Mark De Clive Lowe's collaboration album with the Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, it's definitely the month for electronic/dance-based acts getting physical with full bands. Here The Taxidermist takes a more free-form approach with different musicians gracing different tunes. The message is the same throughout; soft sonic tremors, sweet surprises and moments of truly unique melody. It's all beautiful, but highlights include the lone trumpet stumbling over strange-signature percussion of "Angels & Demons At Play" and the 70s TV theme tune flavour of "Algernon".

Review: Released in 1975, Cameroonian Tala AM's fifth album returns to the spotlight by way of African Road Trip. Dense, multi-layered funk with the emphasis placed firmly on the instrumental and vocals are used more as a rhythmic device, each composition is a fully physical adventure. Highlights include the strident piano slams on "Sugar Lump", the rich Q&A hypnosis and counter-play of melodies on "Arabica" and the much softer, reflective feels and shimmering high life guitars of "Soweto". Ageless.
