World Famous (feat 45Trio) (3:14)
Re Create #01 (3:39)
Review: Sometimes a record drops and you just know it's going to be hot. This is one of those records, an essential 7" from Bloom and Japanese talent DJ Koco aka Shimokita, who has been spinning 45s since 2011 and can juggle beats like Messi can juggle a ball. He is a favourite with the likes of Gilles Peterson and is likely to win many new fans with this one. 'World Famous (feat 45Trio)' is a gloriously jazzy, soulful sound with funk drum breaks and warm, organic percussive tumbling next to natty chords and a killer bassline. Add in the equally irresistible 'Re Create #01' on the flip and you have a sure-fire future classic, so do not sleep.

Funky Soul Brother (DJ KOCO AKA Shimokita) & Southpaw Chop - "Kiwami" (3:15)
Southpaw Chop - "Chocolate Sunday" (3:18)
Review: DJ KOCO AKA Shimokita and Southpaw Chop join forces once more for a tidy new vinyl only 7" under their Funky Soul Brother alias for Southpaw Chop's eponymous label. 'Kiwami' is a raw funk tune with razor sharp hi hats over spy theme-like 60s synths and bi claps. It's brilliantly retro and filled with dance floor drama. On the reverse, Southpaw Chop goes it alone for 'Chocolate Sunday' which his a more deep cut and languid tune that lazes on drawn out funk riffs and cosmic synth explosions.

Track 1 (4:48)
Track 2 (5:12)
Review: Two popular tracks from the highly rated and MURO-curated compilation Diggin Victor: Deep Into The Vaults Of Japanese Fusion / AOR are now made available for the first time on their own standout 7". Originally released as a limited item at an anniversary event, these rare gems are magically escapist sounds that blend library music, jazz, soul and Balearic mindsets into a pair of tropical heaters. The Kumi Sasak A-side is a real melodic noodler with meandering bass and a whimsical, carefree spirit as it heads nowhere in particular in hypnotic fashion. Side-B has 'Kimono' by Tetsuo Sakurai, which is a more rhythmic sound with funky bass riffs and 80s broken beats and a lush vocal.

Jim Sharp - "Inner City" (3:45)
Nick Bike - "Inner City" (Power mix) (4:48)
Review: Jim Sharp & Nick Bike are two of Canada's finest beat makers and here they turn their attention to the legendary Marvin Gaye. His 'Inner City' from the timeless What's Going On album gets a modern update from Jim Sharp that retains the soulful vocal of the original but with new drums. They're crisp and tight but funky, and the bendy chords and melodic motifs flesh it out. On the reverse is a Power Mix by Nick Bike that ups the weight and stomp of the drums and layers in the wordless ad libs from the original to bring the soul.

Disco Shitan (long version) (5:08)
Shitan (part 1) (3:09)
Shitan (part 2) (4:03)
Review: A near-mythical release from the Italian composer/bassist/karate don Pino Presti, Shitan was a one-off project in 1977. Slow, pensive, full of tension and loaded with detailed cinematic elements, it still sounds forward-thinking today. No surprises that the original 12"s regularly go for hundreds. Madly the long version never made it to the original 12" so this is the first time the full five minute version has been available. As if a repress wasn't enough reason to jump on this!

Magic (5:34)
Magic (version) (6:13)
Review: Quintessential Brit funk from 1982; Side On was a one off project from three members of Freeez and Potion, and "Magic" was unfortunately, their only official release. Cited by the likes of Dam Funk as an influence, the raw funk oozing through the mix on both versions was ahead of its time and veering towards more of a proto house sound that kicks dancefloors like a mule. The standard vocal is much more focused on Rick Clarke's strong vocal while the version goes all out with full bass runs and the obligatory saxophone solo. Abracadabra... Reach out and grab this.

Nite Time Melody (4:41)
Nite Time Melody (instrumental) (5:33)
Review: Recorded in 1983, never released, forever the subject of hushed-toned disco and boogie collectors... Skytrane was the brainchild of boogie professor and studio scientist du jour Steve Mannen. And while no one knows why this never saw the official light of day, it's certainly been rescued and restored with care for this limited release. The production of this salubrious slap-bass / synth jam is enormous and Madeleine Davis's voice really shines over the groove. Unless you're playing the instrumental, of course, which is equally satisfying.

Good Thang (Nick Bike & Adam Doubleyou remix) (4:08)
Review: Fools Gold serve up a mega limited 7" here that is pure dynamite for the club. It's a single from Small-town DJs featuring some big vocal work from the legendary Bootsy Collins. The bass is impossibly elastic and rubbery, bouncing about the mix with goey goodness. Add in slapping hits and big broken beat drums, withering sci-fi effects and some party-amping raps and you have a real crowd pleaser. The Adam Doubleyou & Nick Bike remix smooth things out and is a little bit more of a low slung funk sound.

Enjoy The Silence (Smoove Multitrack rework) (5:31)
Let's Stay Together (Smoove Multitrack rework) (6:20)
Blind Alley (Smoove Multitrack rework) (4:46)
Review: While the Reflex was the first to forge a career out of multi-track re-editing (which would have been called remixing back in the disco era, since you are rearranging using the original parts), plenty of producers have followed in his footsteps in recent times - not least popular disco and funk party-starter Smoove. Here he serves up a ninth instalment in his excellent 'Multitrack Reworks' series. On side A he does a stellar job in reinventing Depeche Mode's 'Enjoy The Silence' as a squelchy, synths-and-slap-bass sporting mid-tempo disco anthem, complete with spine-tingling vocal breakdowns. He opens side B with a stripped-back, dubbed-out take on Al Green classic 'Let's Stay Together', smartly emphasising the bittersweet beauty of the original version's orchestral accompaniment, before delivering a sweet, head-nodding take on the Emotions' 'Blind Alley'.

Review: Multitrack Reworks is a new label that will be putting out limited edition, hand-stamped white label 12"s that are made from reworked tunes that have been constructed from the original multitracks. Kicking off the first one is the queen of soul that is Chaka Khan and a version of 'Clouds' with nice loose drums, big string builds and a silky vocal. Flip it over and you will find a brilliantly dynamic and funky new take on the most classic Grace Jones jam, 'Slave To The Rhythm.' It's packed with plenty of rich instrumental licks, a flamboyant sense of melody and of course Grace's own seductive voice.

Review: Limited edition, hand-stamped white label 12"s from Smoove, reworking as though each of its remixed originals were axiomatic expressions of sonic perfection. 'Dance', for example, has a well known 80s classic reworked to stomping, heavyweight perfection - stretching its vocals to breathy ecstasy. Meanwhile EWF's 'Can't Hide Love' and 'Playing Your Game, Baby' by a certain Mr White, unite over a similar subject matter; there's no point in hiding your love. Review: Smoove is one half of the legendary edit duo Smoove and Turell from Northern England. He goes it alone here on the fourth volume of his Multitack Reworks series with two slices of the kind of grooves that we know and love and him for. A-side 'Live' and flip track 'Egypt' are both prime cuts of timeless funk with driving drum breaks and plenty of catchy and hooky melodic motifs. Hey There (4:48)
Review: Graham Luckhurst and Gary Johnson's picks for their reissue-focused Pressure Makes Diamonds label have thus far been top-notch, with the vast majority of chosen recordings being as essential as they are exceedingly rare. Here they deliver a much-needed new pressing - albeit in limited numbers - of Sons of the Kingdom's most sought-after double A-side. The Israel-based American group - members of the "Black Hebrew" movement of the period - originally recorded and released the brilliant modern soul/deep soul fusion cuts 'Modernization' and 'Hey There' in 1978, though the artwork on this reissue takes more cues from the former song's 1980 reissue on K.O.G. Both cuts are simply superb, so we'd suggest not hanging around if you want a copy.

Non Si Deve Profanare Il Sonno Dei Morti (Soundtrack)
John Dalton Street (2:25)
Manchester M2 6LD (2:26)
Review: Those with a deep knowledge of cult Italian horror movies should be aware of the work of Giulliano Sorgini, and in particular his soundtrack to Non Si Deve Profanre Il Sonno Dei Mortie (a movie known in English as both The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue and Let Sleeping Corpses Lie). This Four Flies Records' "45" boasts two of the most potent recordings from the soundtrack. On the A-side you'll find the movie's main theme, 'John Dalton Theme', a superb slab of zombified psych-funk laden with simmering horror strings, loose-limbed percussion solos, crunchy drum-breaks and toasty bass. Over o the flip you'll find 'Manchester M2 6LD', a stripped-back reprise version that replaces Sorgini's cut-glass strings with sustained Hammond organ chords. Happily, the killer groove and righteous drum solos remain in-tact.

Review: Dimitri From Paris has always been pretty much a whole sound world unto himself. He draws on disco and filter house in his own unique ways and never fails to cook up steamy cuts for sweaty clubs. This time out he is in edit mode and has carefully worked his magic on The Soul Searchers tune 'Ashley's Roachclip'. His version for this limited edition 7" via DFP Vaults has jazzy flutes leading the way over churning funk drums with plenty of guitar riffs adding some girt under busy trumpets. An original 7' edit is also included and is slightly less weighty in the low end.

Review: Starfire's 'Make The Most Of It' is a standout disco gem from 1976. The US band hailed from Richmond in Virgina and put out a couple of long players and handful of singles between 1976 and 1979. This is one of their most well known and most sought after tunes with its deep cut funk sounds, guttural vocals and glossy Rhodes chords all layering in the comic vibes. Fulton County Line (4:48)
Review: If you've ever been to a rare groove party - or a soul and funk one, for that matter - there's a fair chance you'll have heard Tommy Stewart's 'Bump & Hustle Music'. The song first featured on the American artist's self-titled debut album in 1976, but later became an anthem on the London rare groove scene. It remains an infectious, feel-good, life-affirming treat, with addictive female vocals, twittering flute motifs and much-sampled horn riffs riding a languid, rolling groove. Over on the flip you'll find another fine track taken from the same album: the sweeping, string-laden disco sweetness that is 'Fulton County Line'.

Review: On the latest edition in the Colin Curtis Pressents series, a swathe of producers have given their takes on tracks from Bluey and Gilles Peterson's superb Brit-funk tribute album as Str4ta, Aspects. There's plenty to get the blood pumping throughout, not least a killer, EP-opening, delay-laden jazz-funk-goes-disco revision of 'Rhythm In Your Mind' courtesy of Nuovi Fratelli, who brilliantly extends the track to 12 glorious minutes. The EP also boasts two other takes on this track: a rubbery, organic house style version from Born74 and a slap bass-sporting, Latin-tinged jazz-funk revision by Steve Conry and Takashi Nakazoto. Rui Fradinho's liquid broken beat version of 'Dance Desire' is also superb, making this a near essential set of remixes.

Welcome To My World (5:11)
Review: Few soul labels are quite as good at sniffing out previously unreleased material as Family Groove Records. Their tireless digging frequently unearths hidden musical treasure such as these two tracks, which date from the earliest days of Louisiana outfit Superior Elevation. Both tracks were apparently recorded in 1879 at Sea-Saint in New Orleands, the near mythical studio owned by Allen Toussaint. First up is 'Freaky With You', a breathlessly energetic psychedelic disco romp laden with sweaty hand percussion, flash-fried vocals, rubbery slap bass and eyes-closed funk-rock guitar licks. In contrast, 'Welcome to My World' is a slow and seductive, two-step style modern soul number that's as sweet as it is loved-up.

Review: Here's a pleasant surprise: a fresh set of remixes of killer cuts from the back catalogue of Melbourne-based band Surprise Chef, whose hard-to-pigeonhole take on cinematic soul contains numerous nods to classic jazz-funk and Brit-funk jams. Masters at Work give their take on 'Crayfish Caper', first joining the dots between Afro-beat, jazz-funk and West London style bruk on the 'Nuyorican Broken' mix, before delivering two house-style revisions - the squelchy, synth-bass-propelled 'Masters at Work Mix' and the tougher, more percussive 'MAW Dub'. The EP's other interpretations come from Harvey Sutherland, whose 'Weird Flex 12" and 'Weird Flex' revisions of 'New Ferrari' add the band's jazz-funk instrumentation and spacey synths to a warming, off-kilter deep house groove.

Review: Having fulfilled his reggae ambitions, Snoop returns to the source with this incredible homage to the original funk that hip-hop spawned from. Referencing Bootsy Collins with his new moniker, he's teamed up with one of Stones Throw's most consummate funk purveyors Dam Funk. We don't need to tell you the result; authentic, sexy and smooth, it's a time machine that whisks us back to the late 70s and early 90s. From the dreamy textures and overdubbed harmonies of "1Question?", the shiny proto-R&B mothership moment "Do My Thang", everything about this screams class. Timeless funk made by two masters, we guarantee this will sound just as hot in 10 or 20 years.

Previously a Japan-exclusive with soaring resale prices, now everyone can enjoy the bumping bass and clean brass of this Jazz-rock classic. The instrumentation is as crisp as they come from the very first note on 'Painted Paradise' with its head bumping saxophone solos. Inagaki's Soul Media crafted a soulful masterpiece at the height of Japan's obsession with American music in the 70s, with this record even including a cover of Kool & The Gang's 'Funky Stuff', turning the disco-jazz into a slow funk-filled jam. A much-needed repressing of a must-listen record.

In The Red is a deep dive into the exciting funk fusion coming out of London between 1980-83 as a new movement of black British musicians honed a sound that owes as much to soundsystem culture as it does disco. From the glistening instrumental flare of Index to the lavish synths and slap bass of Equa, this captures a unique and currently under-documented moment in groove history. Complete with detailed liner notes, this is a fantastic way to launch a new label. Not to be slept on.

Review: By the time he recorded Gail, Michel Sardaby was already an established player on the European jazz scene. The Martinique-born pianist had made a string of memorable guest appearances and released two well-regarded albums before he set foot in Media Sound Studio in New York City in February '75. The resultant set, recorded with local jazz and funk musicians, has long been an in-demand record on both the jazz and jazz-funk scenes. The tracks touch on both, as well as contemporaneous modal jazz. While bassist Richard Davis and drummer Billy Hart play their part, it's Sardaby who is the real star, delivering a thrilling range of riffs and solos on piano and Fender Rhodes.

Review: Japanese keyboardist Hiroshi Sat is by now a cult figure among record collectors. His masterful jazz-funk classic Orient from 1979 might be his most well known but Time is no less essential. This limited edition reissue backs that up in case you needed reminding. It starts with glowing keys and chords and goes on a journey through sentimental piano ballads, weird country-tinged tropical jams like 'Choit' and downtempo funk in the form of 'Yamate Hotel.' Elsewhere 'Akanegumo No Machi' casts off to an ocean island and 'Kage Ni Mukatte' is star gazing AOR.

Review: Habibi Funk co-founder Jannis Stuertz first came across "the Holy Grail of Sudanese funk", Saif Abu Bakr and The Scorpions "Jazz, Jazz, Jazz", while browsing eBay listings a few years back. His interest piqued, he took a trip to Sudan to track down the musicians who had made a ridiculously rare LP that was changing hands for thousands of pounds online. Some four years later, his wish to reissue the set has finally come through. It was originally recorded in Kuwait in 1980 and brilliantly joins the dots between American funk, soul and rhythm and blues, traditional Sudanese vocals and rhythmic arrangements, and even a dash of Congolese soukkous. It's the first full album Habibi Funk has reissued, and with good reason: it's near perfect from start to finish.

Review: Originally planned for release last year to mark the 50th anniversary of the album's creation, Gil Scott-Heron's most renowned full-length returns in stunning, audiophile quality sound. This time round, the album has been stretched across two discs, both of which have been pressed at 45rpm for louder sound. Created by Scott-Heron and musical sparring partner Brian Jackson with the assistance of producer Bob Thiele, Pieces of a Man remains an incredible album, with a string of classic cuts - think 'Home is Where The Hatred Is', 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' and 'Save the Children' - being joined by such lesser-celebrated delights as the fizzing 'Lady Day and John Coltrane', the blissful 'I Think I'll Call It Morning' and 'A Sign of the Ages'.

Review: The formidable combination of Gil Scott Heron and Brian Jackson sees new life on the Soul Brother's label with the reissue of Anthology: Messages. It's a similar transmission to Arista's 2007 release of It's Your World, and features loved classics "It's Your World", "New York City", "The Bottle" and a very special freeform rendition of "Home Is Where The Hatred Is". A superb release for fans of these two soul, jazz, and poetical dignitaries, and a great retrospective for those who came to learn of Gil Scott through his I'm New Here LP for XL Recordings. The revolution will not be televised.

Review: If you're looking for a top-notch introduction to the collaborative work of pioneering poet/spoken word vocalist/singer Gil Scott-Heron and musician/producer Brian Jackson, we'd suggest taking a serious look at Anthology: Messages. Originally released in 2005, it contains most of the pair's most celebrated soul/jazz fusion works - including 'The Bottle', 'Winter in America' and 'Home is Where The Hatred Is' (albeit in expanded live form) - alongside some deeper picks, slept-on album cuts and genuinely inspired moments such as 'Racetrack in France', a 1977 cut that boasts some seriously squelchy, proto-acid electronics, and 'Hold On To Your Dreams'.

Review: This seminal collaborative album by Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson was released in 1975 but gets a special reissue for Record Store Day 2024. It blends jazz, soul and acute political commentary with Scott-Heron's powerful spoken-word lyrics alongside Jackson's innovative woodwind arrangements. The title track reflects the duo's global perspective and highlights the struggles for freedom and equality that are still so relevant today. The album's fusion of groove, intellect and activism marked a significant moment in Scott-Heron's career. With its poignant social messages and rich instrumentation, this record remains a timeless work of political and musical significance.

Review: It is to San Diego in California that we go with this album from Sequence. The story is that the music featured here was originally on a reel-to-reel that was then placed in an auction by California Soul. It was made up of five previously unreleased tunes and five from their Mix Faze release, three of which are slightly different versions. Cordial Recordings entered the bidding and won, then made contact with Ron from the band who gave his blessing for the music to be released. He also agreed on the title, Visions Of My Love, and relayed that the music was recorded back in 1976. All these years later, it still bangs.

Review: Dark Entries is pleased to announce a deluxe reissue of Sexual Harrassment's 1983 opus I Need A Freak. Lynn Tolliver, DJ/Program Director at Cleveland's WZAK, adopted the pseudonym David Payton in order to keep his musical endeavors separate from his public persona. Sexual Harrassment (misspelled deliberately) was formed as a concept band, with members selected based on appearance and choreographic skill rather than musical ability. Tolliver's explicit lyrics focused on the central themes of desire and sexual relations. Working at a studio in Akron, he recorded an album of quirky-yet-lurid electro funk, which was released on Heat Records. Tolliver remarks, "I learned as a youngster, sex sells! The things that are rated the worst - violence, horror and sex - are the things people want to see or hear about." I Need a Freak was a surprise hit, selling over 100,000 copies.

Review: Famously, Shadow's Sweet Sweet Dreams album was panned by critics when it first appeared way back in 1984. In the years since, it has attained cult status, with collectors of Trinidadian music particularly enjoying its curious blend of bustling boogie electronics, Soca rhythms, traditional instrumentation and sassy disco-pop style. As this tasty reissue proves, the album has lost none of its lustre over the last 30 years. Put simply, it still sounds ahead of its time, with intergalactic dancefloor workouts such as "Let's Make It Up" (with its "we're gonna have a party" refrain) and "Way Way Out" resonating particularly loudly.

Review: Aussie Afrobeat and Afro-soul crew Shaolin Afronauts have released some terrific music over the years. While they've released more polished and complex music in recent years, we're still massive fans of their 2011 debut album Flight of the Ancients, which returns to wax in 2020 via a fresh pressing from Freestyle Records. It's a superb set all told, with the Adelaide-based combo strutting their way through both up-tempo and more laid-back fusions of Afro-beat and Afro-funk, each piled high with evocative horn lines, wah-wah guitar motifs, Tony Allen inspired drumming and seriously good solos from the band's talented players. Our current favourites include 'Flight of the Ancients', the irrepressible 'Kilimanjaro' and the spiritual jazz inspired closing cut, 'The Scarab'.

It's Just Begun
Review: The Simonsound are in fact Matt Ford (aka hip-hop producer DJ Format) and Simon James, and on Reverse Engineering they've united to go on a Moog-fuelled odyssey into a funky and kitsch world of their own. Having initially drummed up interest by releasing two 7" singles featuring covers of Kraftwerk's Tour De France and The Jimmy Castor Bunch's B-boy classic It's Just Begun, they've turned the project into a full blown album and it's huge amount of fun from start to finish.
Both of the initial singles appear on the album - Tour De Mars (as they've retitled it) kicking things off in style. As with almost all of the material here, funky live drums underpin extensive use of vintage synths, making it a pleasing cross between the earnest output of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and the slightly more tongue-in-cheek 90's covers project, The Moog Cookbook.
Downtempo Psychedlic rock and soundtracks bear an influence on Hole In The Head and also the gourgeous Bad Love, which wraps a female vocal among layers of John Barry-esque strings and slow, doom-laden beats. The beatless and theramin-filed Inside The Capsule will instantly make listeners think of vintage Dr. Who, as will the experimental Against The Clock, while a cover of Bob James' Nautilus sails along nicely using keyboard preset beats. With their cover of It's Just Begun rounding off the album, the duo pull off this experiment well. Reverse Engineering is certainly very retro but it bears all the right influences. With the playing and arrangements all so accomplished, let's hope they have another go again soon

Review: Sir Edward's The Power Of Feeling album will cost you upwards of three figures if you want to buy an original copy. Thankfully you can enjoy its delights now for a much more reasonable price thanks to this reissue from Jazz Room. The record features unheralded sax man Harold Vick as side man with some legendary Hammond men Big John Patton, Jimmy McGriff and Larry Young also on board. They all serve up a soulful jazz sound that is smooth but never sentimental, with versions of Donny Hathaway and The Stylistics tunes and a super version of the classic 'People Make The World Go Round.'
