Review: H-Track re-release the third in their edit trilogy with this stunning collection of perfectly executed reversions. Calender's epoch-defining string hook and super-tight bass groove "Hypertension" gets a raw, foot-stomping extension, "California One" is a very subtle update of the Con Funk Shun classic while Faith Massive's "Shelter" gets a sparkling Balearic polish that adds emphasis to the lush lazy rare groove essence. Review: On this multi-artist bonanza, Aficionado owners Jason Boardman and Moonboots have decided to showcase contemporary talents from Manchester, in association with clothing brand Good Measure. Half Sink steps up first, gently unfurling the reverb-heavy guitar solos, booming bass and shuffling samba rhythms of "Tsukimi". King Clyde's loose, groovy and fuzzy "Request Line" is a bouncy disco-funk treat, while Dream Lovers' "For Belgian Friends" is an evocative chunk of meandering bliss. Arguably best of all, though, is "On A Whispered Way" by The Records We Never Made, a glistening, delay-heavy foray into cinematic, post-rock pastures. Clearly, Manchester's got (Balearic) talent.

Review: Freestyle 'Turn Up The Music' courtesy of this new 12" from Roy Hamilton, Cosmo Bowen and Dennis Palmer. The trio worked together way back in the 80s and back then it was as part of a nine-piece outfit known as Breeze. Anyone who attended the iconic Ronnie Scott's in London back then will probably have heard them play upstairs with the likes of Hi Tension and Gonzalez. In 1984 they decided to lay down this one and only 12" on the HBS label they ran. It's a stomper but a laid-back one that is now well in demand on the funk and soul scene.

Review: Maledetta Discoteca closes out its year with this special blue vinyl featuring a mix of brilliant Italo disco artists. They all hail from Italy and Argentina and are editing originals that span disco, electro, proto-house and more. Hararis' 'Si No Pagan' is the first under the scalpel and is a funky cut with raw drums. Lance's 'Yo Quiero A Lucy' is a more slowed down and seductive sound with 80s synths, Marta Paradise's 'Calling' (edit) is a direct and sugar synth laced house stomper and Alan Strani's 'Tension Salsable' brings things to a closer with a nice stomping disco grove with mysterious synths and lush percussion.

Review: After dropping an album of drop-dead classic jazz, rock and latin fusion with the self-titled The Fusion Experience, this single brings the remixes to the fore with some great versions of album tracks plus an edit too. Ray Harris' original of Scaramunga sounds like a long lost relic from an undiscovered vault of jazz and freakbeat classics, like a fusion between Charles Mingus, The Doors and Tito Puente. The basic piano pattern stays the same while the rest of the band vamp around it, with Harris laying down some sick organ sounds over the top combined with layers of percussion. Lack of Afro's remix however strips everything down to the essentials, making the guitar and bass carry the riffs while more robust beats are craftily laid on top. His mix of Freedom is even more drastic, as he incorporates a more 4/4 disco swing to the drums, adds a cool breakdown similar to Dennis Coffey's Scorpio and then takes the tune into a cover of SOUL's Burning Spear!
Unexpected, but thoroughly cool.

Review: Two long players in the space of 12 months? 2013 really has been a great year to be a Heliocentrics fan. While Now Again appear to be filing this under 'EP', with nine tracks and an alluringly cyclical intro/outro narrative it's so much more than your conventional extended player. Highlights abound throughout this fuzzy, far-away psychedelic session but the distorted bass runs and muffled moaning guitars is a cosmic jam of Woodstockian proportions while "Thunder & Lightning" takes the dark art of reverberation to a whole a new spaced-out level. Press play and prepare to be consumed.

Review: German soul troupe Hi-Fly Orchestra let rip on a serious cover version session with four tightly sewn showdowns: Karl Frierson adds bounds of gutsy, gritty soul power as he takes care of the vocals on the turbo-soul take on Lenny Kravitz's "Let Love Rule" and the deep-swing vision of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On". Flip for two deliciously dreamy takes with Rayla Sunshine as "Purple Rain" gets a super-swoon shine while "Like A Virgin" is given a jazz twist that's so immense you'll pinch yourself it's not the original and Madonna's is the cover.

Review: Legendary Harlem label Queen Constance brought the world the most raw and authentic disco direct from the source. Years later, collectors and dancers alike still fawn over plenty of its output and now two of its more notorious tracks get on-point edits by contemporary stars Kon and Moplen. With Kon at the buttons, High Voltage's "Rock Spank Freak" is tweaked and coerced, with extended funk breakdowns and heavier bottom ends. Moplen then adds some extra colour and pumps up the trumpet lines to make for an unabashedly glorious disco stomper. This is a 100% legit reissue with fresh remastering, so do not sleep.

HOLDTight steps up first with the head-nodding, saucer-eyed shuffle of future yacht disco classic 'Be My Love 2Nite', before Delfonic offers up a fine rearrangement of an obscure, breathy and seductive disco gem full of prominent Moog synth sounds, jaunty pianos and whispered vocals. 'Hotmood' opens up with the feel-good disco-funk of 'Just Tonight,' Scruscru keeps it real with 'Funky Flute' which is a nice languid instrumental and Frank Virgilio up the ante with some big horn-laced grooves. The flip side then comes on strong with three more brilliantly musical grooves that brim with catchy riffs and fresh disco-infused rhythms. A great start to what is sure to be a great label.

Review: Many have predicted there was going to be a big beat revival and UK producer Rory Hoy seems perfectly happy to lead the way! The Howlin Records regular returns to Big M Productions for the Tonite EP, which ably demonstrates his obvious talent for the art of cut and paste. The title track sets the tone, running through a multiplicity of familiar samples that sit perfectly on a tight funk groove - even finding time for a killer half speed breakdown. "Feel The Funk" drops a similarly dizzying array of scratchadelia over a jagged uptempo beat that occasionally veers towards acid chaos. Review: Super Spicy celebrates getting to five years old in the best way it knows how - with a new release, of course. This one comes on translucent re wax and brings together a blend of seasoned and fresh talent including Hotmood, Shalvoy, Diana Swan, Musta, Adam Nova and Uptown Funk. These tracks do a fine job of reflecting the label's dedication to innovation right from the off. Musta's 'Fresco' is a nice jumbled percussive disco funker, Hotmood's 'Ayaaa' rides on some electric synth waves and Shalvo's 'Dancin' is a smooth cruise for the midnight hours. On the flip side are three more vibrant and vivacious disco dancers for good times only.

On the B-side Opolopo draws out the grooves and goes for a soulful house roller that reworks Sylvia St. James's downtempo groover 'Motherland' to perfection.

This is the swooned half and it is just a good as the first with our favourite being from the hugely prolific and mega-on form breakout artist of the year, Kareem Ali. His 'Black Futures' is a steamy, surging house track with kicking kicks and astral synths that speak to the soul. Hassan Abou Alam's 'Hella Mega Drive' spins hi hats, drums and bass into a tightly woven groove of no fixed genre and the swing in Pookie's 'Beast Mode' is simply irresistible. Big ups one and all.
