If There's A Will There's A Way
Don Covay & The Jefferson Lemon Band - "If There's A Will There's A Way" (3:36)
Harvey Mandel - "Baby Batter" (3:40)
Review: Climactic, psychedelic soul and blues brilliance by Don Covay, co-written by Donny Hathaway and backed by a proto-Balearic sweetmeat on the B, Harvey Mandel's 'Baby Batter'. The A-side was originally released one year after (1972) the B-side (1971) on the American Janus label, and the tracks provide a palpable contrast, drawing on the same idiom yet approaching it with remarkable difference. Covay's lyrics are, thematically, overflowing with determination, despite the psychic conflict at the track's heart. Is there any resolution? "The sweeter you, look, mama... the bitterer you treat me..."

Review: Ace JB sound-alike, vocal dancefloor funk. Most James Brown rip-offs don't even come close, but this one is up there with the best James Brown tracks. Backed with a female vocal version of the same tune.

Lalo Shuffle (rework) (4:33)
Thomas Haak Vs BOW-tanic - "Magic Hancock" (instrumental Essence) (4:06)
Review: There is lashings of funk around this month and up there with the best of it is these new Resense tackle. It is designed for the advanced dance floors out there and features 'Lalo Shuffle' which is a rework of the main theme from the original Planet Of The Apes film. Not your average source material but a sure-fire funk destroyer with cool to spare as the big licks and hefty kicks power it along. On the flip is 'Magic Hancock' which swings down low with filtered bass guitar funk and deep house drums carrying you away.

Chameleon (15:31)
Watermelon Man (6:22)
Review: Herbie Hancock has been responsible for many era-defining records over the years - "Rockit" being a particularly good example - but few of his compositions have been quite as game changing as "Chameleon". First featured on 1973 album "Head Hunters", the 15-minute epic was revolutionary in a number of ways, not least in its use of a killer 12-note bassline, "percussive" style guitar parts and loose-limbed funk beat. It remains one of the greatest jazz-funk moments of all time, as this timely reissue proves. This time round, it comes accompanied by another "Head Hunters" classic - Hancock's groovy, synth-laden re-recording of his own 1962 composition "Watermelon Man". Two stone cold classics for the price of one: what's not to like?

Stars In Your Eyes (Special Disco remix) (11:14)
Saturday Night (Special Disco remix) (7:04)
Review: Two out-and-out rarities from Hancock's Columbia-era output. Strictly the sole preserve of DJ promo back in 79/80, the clue is in the title 'special' disco remixes. Smooth, soulful and arranged with such style, every element of Herbie's essential ingredients is brought to the fore in its own time with its own space. "Stars In Your Eyes" swoons with a soulful ballad feel while "Saturday Night" pumps and jumps with party-pulling allure. Simply essential.

It's Just Begun (Hansi remix) (4:22)
Jungle Groove (Lego re-edit) (5:27)
Review: The Italian disco dons at Legofunk have another couple of belters for us here. As usual, both sides of this 7" feature an edit. The first is by Hansi who flips the well known 'It's Just Begun' into a driving and funky rhythm with rolling bass. It's a chunky one that never lets up. On the reverse, 'Jungle Groove' gets a re-edit from the in house Lego team and it becomes a loopy affair that teases the drop for ages. When it comes, big chords and raw, yelping vocals add extra fuel to the fire. Both are highly impactful.

Marihuana (2:52)
Review: A big hello to new Montreuil-based label Mother I'd Like to Funk, which also wins our award for the best new label name of 2022. The 7" it kicks off with ain't too shoddy either. Harri Stojka Express's 'What A Funky Night' is a long-awaited reissue that was first released in 1983 by the Austrian producer and guitarist. It is some irresistible boogie-disco-funk goodness that came from the leftfield as he had previously dropped mostly jazz-rock-fusion-orientated records. On the flip side is a brilliant reggae and soul fusion that's all about the lovely green herb.

Summer (The First Time) (3:38)
Review: American jazz pianist Gene Harris first released 'Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong' and its counterpart 'Summer' in 1974, when both initially appeared on the classic soul jazz album Astral Signal. Thereafter, it enjoyed a second bout of popularity after being picked up by the trailblazing rare groove scene in London. Now for a third: Selector Series now proffer another reissue of this rare groove workout, a Latin funk gem for an age not yet properly recorded or recognised. Snappy, pugilist drums, wowwing synths and filling choral counterpoints make this a real funk treat.

Pink Mist (2:31)
Minute Of Angle (1:20)
Cairo Connect (2:49)
Pea Soup (1:24)
Review: Cinematic soundscapes, Middle Eastern funk, jazz and breaks make up some of the flavours of the new Havana Syndrome 7", which comes freshly to the repertoire of We Stray True, based in London. On this four-tracker, we hear pristine, front-and-centre library funk delivered straight to the dome; the lead track 'Pink Mist' is indeed a sticky noir-thriller slinker, heavy on the bass and complementary on the Rhodeses and triangles. The ensuing tracks are no less slinky either, with 'Minute Of Angle' as sleuthing and stealthy as a black cat up to no good; then comes 'Cairo Connect' and 'Pea Soup', the first of which brings jazz to the bazaar, while the second mixes back-alleyed night-movements with a flautist's flight of fancy.

I'll House You (4:34)
Root Down (3:59)
Review: The latest slab of sure-fire dancefloor heat on Wah Wah 45s' "Dubplate" series comes courtesy a Haynesy, a duo renowned for the fat, party-starting nature of their reworks, with turntable wizard Jabbathakut providing plenty of on-point scratches. What we get here is not "edits", but rather banging new hip-hop beats laden with classic acapellas. On side A they bring Jungle Brothers' hip-house classic "I'll House You" back to its hip-hop roots, layering the NYC crew's famous vocals over a bustling, up-tempo, Latin-tinged hip-hop beat. Over on the flip they take on Beastie Boys classic "Root Down", with Jabbathakut's tidy deck-work sparring with acapella vocals atop a weighty club hip-hop beat.

Jazz Carnival (3:34)
Magic Fly (3:06)
Review: Haze, an Exeter band that in 1981 endlessly toured the South West of England and released the album "SILVERTOPS REFLECTS HAZE" upon which many contemporary tracks were given the Haze treatment from Barry Manilow's 'I Can't Smile Without You' to Johnny Cash's 'Ghost Riders in the Sky'. In the mix Azymuth's Latin funk anthem 'Jazz Carnival' and Space's legendary electronic 'Magic Fly' surfaced, the latter two of which make up this exceptional 7" release by Panorama records, this relatively new label that celebrates idiosyncratic rarities. Haze seem to like breaking down the original and making space between the beats and yet on this A side an already pumping track pumps faster with an extra electronic edge on the Moog-ish organ, whilst paradoxically Haze's lead guitarist takes on Jose Roberto Bertrami's originally syncopated keys in a more regulated way - not a bad thing if not a jazz dancer but someone who just loves to dance! Intelligently, Panorama have coupled this with Haze's percussion heavy version of 'Magic Fly' on the B side, that even if it remains more so electronic, even poppy, it nicely compliments the Brazilian homage of side A. If you love a rare version, 7" 45s and early 80s jazz funk with a synthesised edge you'll love this.

Review: This single is taken from the only studio album from US soul/rare groove duo Heaven Sent & Ecstasy, originally released back in 1980. P-Vine reissued it as CD in 2006, but this is the first time it has been released on 7' format. Features the well known track 'I'm A Lady' newly edited as single version, in addition to 'The Greatest Love Story' on the flip which is taken from their only album of the same name. A highly treasured album with strong appeal to collectors.

Review: Two long players in the space of 12 months? 2013 really has been a great year to be a Heliocentrics fan. While Now Again appear to be filing this under 'EP', with nine tracks and an alluringly cyclical intro/outro narrative it's so much more than your conventional extended player. Highlights abound throughout this fuzzy, far-away psychedelic session but the distorted bass runs and muffled moaning guitars is a cosmic jam of Woodstockian proportions while "Thunder & Lightning" takes the dark art of reverberation to a whole a new spaced-out level. Press play and prepare to be consumed.

Originally recorded live at the renowned ONKELPO in Sweden, this release features two monster tracks that pack a punch. On the Side-1, 'The Catfish' delivers a heavy moog and drum groove layered with outstanding horn sections, creating an electrifying atmosphere that is sure to get listeners moving. Meanwhile, the Side-2 offers 'Head Egg,' an uptempo and powerful groove with a banger of a drum loop that will leave audiences craving more. Review: Some labels deal only in pristine soul legitness - and Celestial Echo are one such set of aesthetes. A reissues label, Celestial Echo focuses on modern soul and boogie, and is curated by Miche (Michael Davies) and Stu Clark. Following three impressively chosen sonic chrisms, all reissued in 2024 - releases by Glenda McLeod, Brutal Force and Winfield Parker - comes this fourth foray into one of the best-loved and perhaps only publicly known tunes by the obscure boogie singer Lisa Hill: 'I Am On The Real Side'. New York's Qit Records were the original purveyors of this track, though its initial obscurity is so baffling to us that we'd guess some case of derelict nobility was at play here; either that, or there was just this much amazing soul music being made in the big city at the time! Here, Hill proclaims her place on the right side of love, with a lyrical emphasis on the object of her passions proving themself to her before she submits.

Review: The late precision edit maestro Ryuhei The Man has taken his scalpel to a couple ,ore jams here and turned out typically high grade, sympathetic but essential edits that rework the tunes into dance floor dynamite. First up is Tusuke Hirdao's 'Early Bird' which is a driving, gliding, smooth as you like jazz-funk gem with knotted bass and expressive live drums. On the flip is the more cosmically minded 'Sonar' with its shimmering xylophone melodies, frenzied drum playing and heart warming chords. Amazing stuff.

Review: There is a whole bunch of lovely disco music from the Far Eastern label At Home Sound landing on wax this month. Chief amongst the goodies is this 7" featuring another excellent brace of remixes from Ryuhei The Man. He turns his hand to two tunes from Yusuke Hirado, a piano player since youth and someone with only a small discography. These tunes are taken from his Tower of Touch album and are perfect jazz-funk fusions for the smoothies out there. Noodling Rhodes keys, neat bass funk and conversational freestyles all take you to the stars on both cuts.

Greasy Spoon (4:10)
Review: Late, great Japanese funk don Takehiro Honda's vaults get the treatment from HMV as two of his many famously fizzy jams enjoy a new lease of life. 1971's "Ain't It Funky Now" should be familiar by all as it subverts the good work of the greatest band leader of all time with mild jazz and funk fusion. "Greasy Spoon" on the B can be found a few years deeper into Takehiro's discography as part of his 1973 album "What's Going On". Another supreme, lucid fusion cut; not only does it still kick up a fuss on the dancefloor, it also salutes the best cooked breakfasts on the planet. Not to be slept on.

Lovin' You (Smoove Disco dub remix) (4:26)
Review: The first 45 from the Belfast-based Superfly Funk & Soul label - an offshoot of a long-running club night helmed by DJ Pete Brady - is something of a doozy. It comes courtesy of the Honeyshotz, a studio band set up by Ian Stevens (bass player with The Getiup and The King Rooster) as a vehicle for his own compositions. In its A-side 'radio edit' form, 'Loving You' is a Clavinet-happy chunk of jazz-funk influenced, 1970s dancefloor soul revivalism. It naturally boasts superb musicianship but also some stellar lead vocals from Sabina Challenger. Scene heavyweight Smoove handles remix duties, delivering a heavyweight dub that adds extra percussion, beefs up the bass and showcases almost every instrument in turn. It's a weighty, effortlessly funky revision.

Review: Just the way we like it; contemporary and obscure. First recorded in an indeterminate year in the 1970s but only released for the first time in 2015, Hot Stuff Band's 'Juju Man' and 'Big Splash' are twin slices of elusive yet legendary Brazilian funk. Better known by the name Azymuth, the band come from an era wherein the South American nations were not too fussed about the persona of singers, and were more concerned with how hot and tight the instrumentals could be. First appearing as part of the compilation Secao Ritmica, the two tracks from this sadly lesser-known alias now get a reissue with the band's original vouchers, Atemoya Records.

Trip To Your Mind (Chris Hill & Robbie Vincent remix) (9:02)
Review: Second time around for Hudson People's most celebrated single, 1979's obscure and suitably hard to find 'Trip To Your Mind'. The track was originally released on a couple of different labels, and mixes from both 12-inches are featured on this reissue. The 'Hit House' version, which we think was mixed by the band's leader and in-house producer, is a superb dancefloor jazz-funk epic rich in disco-funk licks, a driving groove, jammed-out electric piano lines, punchy horns, occasional vocal refrains and duelling rock and jazz style guitar solos. On the flip you'll find the breezier and arguably more club-focused remix by UK jazz-funk legends (and Funk Mafia members) Chris Hill and Robbie Vincent, a version that dubs out the vocals a little, prioritises the percussion and adds some superb sax solos.
