The Break Down (Eazy Goes To Memphis)
Cat: HR 009. Rel: 03 Jun 21
Altered Tapes - "The Break Down (Eazy Goes To Memphis)" (3:59)
DJ Platurn - "King Penguin" (Funky beats edit) (4:01)
Review: Chicago's Altered Tapes crew offer up their own unique take on a West Coast gangster rap classic with the A-side of this one on US label Heat Rock. It's the label's seventh outing and places focus on Memphis soul and funk territory. 'The Break Down' is a big, horn led jam with funk beats and crisp rhythms. Reverse this limited 7" to find Oakland's own DJ Platurn. He smashes out a drum heavy, break-heavy edit that pays homage to a cut and paste great. It's funky, filled with vocal samples and mad keys and packs real heat.

The Breakbeat Junkie vs DJP - "Drop Down"
DJ Kid Stretch - "Bomb Style"
Niko - "Disco Monster"
Stickybuds - "Kingston Funk"
Review: The eighth volume of the Big M's sample heavy series gives some old school classics the dirty breakbeat treatment. First up sees Breakbeat Junkie and DJP take on Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)", while DJ Kid Stretch re-imagines the legendary "Rapper's Delight" by Sugarhill Gang, laying down some funky as hell strings and killer drum programming. Flip over for the twisted synth carnival that is "Disco Monster" by Niko and the wobbling "Kingston Funk" by Stickybuds, which samples Basement Jaxx's evergreen "Do Your Thing".

Bentford All Stars - "Greedy G" (3:40)
Dub Specialist - "Granny Scratch Scratch" (3:57)
Review: For the latest in their series of "giant 45s" - loud 12" pressings of classic cuts from the Studio One vaults - Soul Jazz has decided to offer-up a fresh pressing of Brentford All Stars' 'Greedy G'. Based on James Brown classic 'Get On The Good Foot', the track was famously sampled by Boogie Down Productions on their iconic cut 'Jack of Spades'. It remains a bona fide party classic, adding a bass-heavy, Hammond-heavy reggae spin to Brown's insatiable funk groove. As it did the last time Soul Jazz issued it back in 1988, it comes backed with the deeper and more laidback 'Granny Scratch Scratch', another classic cut from Studio One's in-house backing band.

Review: The Re-edits man strikes again with devastating remixes of James Brown's "Hot", which notoriously borrowed Bowie's "Fame" riff (or was it the other way around?), as well as David Bowie's "Golden Years". Massively funky re-edits destined to do some dancefloor damage!

Tom Browne - "Brighter Tomorrow" (feat Carol Woods) (6:12)
Diplomats Of Soul - "Brighter Tomorrow" (feat Incognito & Imaani) (5:53)
Review: Expansion's offshoot label is back with a second release and for the occasion have put together a special eco vinyl 10" here that is strictly limited to just 100 copies and is fully deserving of that treatment: Tom Browne Feat. Carol Woods combined to great effect in the 80s on this soul classic that now gets a first-ever single release. It's the sort of immediately heartwarming tune that draws from soul, jazz funk, disco and more to cook up a steamy and excellent groove. On the flip is Diplomats Of Soul with their own super cover of 'Brighter Tomorrow' featuring Brit funk and acid jazz greats Incognito & Imaani.

Up Above The Rock

Ray Bryant - "Up Above The Rock"
Kool G Rap & DJ Polo - "On The Run"
Review: This seven from the Originals label perfectly encapsulates what the series is all about, pairing a track whose elements have been sampled numerous times over with perhaps the best example of how it was musically reinterpreted. Even if you don't know "Up Above The Rock", the title track from the 1968 LP by Philadelphia based jazz pianist and composer Ray Bryant, by name you'll immediately recognise it's distinctive break and piano riff. This latter element was incorporated superbly on the early 90s hip hop cut "On The Run" from Kool G Rap and DJ Polo which lines the B Side, slowed down somewhat but still distinctively the work of Bryant.

D'ailie - "Live It Up" (instrumental) (4:13)
Review: This latest is a reissue of a Congress Productions EP featuring their seminal 'Neptune'. The much-sampled early 80s jazz-funk classic comes in original form next to two unreleased cuts. The first is a rare boogie cut 'Live It Up' that has been extended for more dancefloor heft having first been dropped under the D'aile' alias as a B-side. Then comes 'Kevin's Funk' which is named in reference to Incognito trumpet player Kevin Robinson, who played as part of a Congress-associated line-up for this session.

Stronger (main) (4:19)
Stronger (dub) (4:35)
Review: After the March drop of this record caused quite the stir, the label is now back with a limited edition white vinyl version to make it all the more vital an addition to your shelves. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo and their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full-length album from 2019. It is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure to reign in the innocent bystanders to party. The Dub is a super-cool alternative version that reminds of us classic roller-skating funk track from Midnight Star or Kool & The Gang. A classy party starter, for sure.

Why You Buggin'
Cat: BOMBSVN 001. Rel: 23 Jan 20
Andy Cooper - "Why You Buggin'" (feat The Allergies) (3:14)
Dr Syntax/Pete Cannon - "Downtime" (The Allergies remix) (3:27)
Review: More all-action fare from the popular Bomb Strikes label, an imprint that has gradually moved away from the party-hearty mash-ups and bootleg remixes on which it made its name. This tidy seven-inch single is notable for the presence of Bristol crew The Allergies. On the A-side they guest on Andy Cooper's "Why You Buggin", a bustling, funk-fuelled fusion of hip-hop and rock that sounds like a wholehearted tribute to the Beastie Boys circa "Licensed To Ill". Over on the flip the West Country party-starters turn remixers, delivering a head nodding, toe-tapping take on Dr Syntax and Pete Canon's hip-hop/funk/ska fusion number "Downtime". Like the A-side, it sounds like a bona fide dancefloor bomb.

Review: New kids on the reissue block, New Zealand's Strangelove Music are off to a flying start with this beautiful 1983 art pop record from subversive chanteuse Lena D'Agua. "Jardim Zoologico" fuses electro boogie with Afrofunk with healthy measures of cosmic polish while "Tao" is a straight up Balearic gem that sparkles with sentiment and horizontal soul. Review: Dam Funk comes through with this brilliant release for the Stones Throw camp. "Hood Pass Intact" was one of the highlights of his Toeachizown LP and the superlative 23rd century funk flex is given added bump by some vocals from the legendary MC Eiht. Elsewhere "4 My Homies" is a tantalising taste of what to expect from Dam's forthcoming album with Slave vocalist Steve Arrington.

Review: Following co-labs with DJ Spinna and Ekkah on previous Glydezone outings, Dam Funk takes to his own label controls solo for the first time with this piquant trio of loose limbed future funk tales. "Electric Breeze" sets the scene perfectly with subtly sleazy electroboogie flavours, "Nyghtryder" spaces the beats out a little more for added cosmicity while "She Lights Me Up" is all about the big double clap gusto and life affirming chords. Serving up the breezy, neon-lit west coast vibe of 'Destination: Known' on the A side, while on the flip we have got some emotive late night boogie-down funk on 'Paradise'. Review: Summer is Dam-Funk season. The synth funk pioneer's sounds never seem more fitting than when cruising about on an early summer evening, top down (at least in your mind) with the sky turning burnt orange. He soundtracks that moment four more times here with 'Rise' being a more downbeat and pensive vibe, then 'Make It' getting a little more playful on the bump-n-grid beats and squelchy boogie bass. 'From A G Perspective' has low-riding Cali-funk in its bones and 'Free' closes with more lush analogue textures and shimmering chords on this vital, limited 12".

Red Light (Peter Solo) (3:35)
Review: An instantly recognisable voice in the funk sphere for over 60 years, you can't talk about Togolese music with mentioning the funkmaster and 'King of Gazo' himself Roger Damawuzan. Containing an unreleased single from his upcoming album 'Seda', this double single is funk so heavy it'll weigh you down. 'Fine Fine' is a slick and fast-paced track of contentment - leave the man alone he said he's fine! - and 'Red Light' is a squeaky clean showcase of what made Damawuzan so popular in Togo with his carefree and charismatic attitude. All you funk lovers out there have got to give this a spin.

It has lost none of its charm or magic all these years later as this new pressing attests. The rolling grooves, the effortlessly epic vocals and the serene string all ooze class. Cowbell (Eeh Aah Eeh) (4:31)
Review: Italian producer Giovanni Damico has always put plenty of effort into making his sounds come alive with lush, rich melodies whatever genre he's making. Now it is Afro and disco grooves that power this EP, with more of those majestic chords. They have a retro feel here - with tinniness and old-school futurism embraced over elastic and acrobatic beats and bass. 'Watch Out' is a party starter to kick off then there are more lazy and sleazy jams like 'Nowhere' and there twisted electronics of 'Voodoo' bring plenty of invention and a variety of vivacious sounds to this EP.

Review: Cute little 7 inchers don't come around that often, but when they do it's worth paying attention, especially when the quality is as good as this mighty double A. Dancefloor Outlaws take the lead, and upkeep the party rep they've developed previously on Disco Cakes. Instant sing-along power and a real cock-sure strut to the groove, it's a wonder they've crammed so much power onto such a tiny slice of vinyl. Basement Freaks takes over the B for some equally ravishing funk; taking Blackstreet's massive smash and bringing it up bang up to date for the nu funk generation, this will instantly bring booty to your dancefloor. Review: Dancefloor Stompers was formed in Sardinia in 2009. They are a talented group of musicians who have a big love of mod jazz, black music roots and Italian soundtracks and library music classics from the 50s through to the 80s and all of that influences this new EP, Phuture Soul. Recorded and mixed at Solid Twin Studio between May 2021 and January 2022, it kick off with the title track which pairs rock guitars with funky basslines. 'Catch This Train' has a more playful pop-rock feel with big horns, 'Glass Tears' is a smoother groove and 'Not In My Name' closes on a more downbeat note.

Sombre Guitar (Star Dish latin remix)
Review: What a great Japanese only reissue! As far as we know this supreme jazz dance classic never came out as a single, apart from on a 12" sampler via the Counterpoint label 12 years back. The track itself was taken from the Creation One album on the USA label Thimble and can fetch several hundred pounds when you can actually find a copy! Tried and trusted by the jazz dance DJ elite, the track was a firm favourite with the likes of Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge during the heady days of legendary weekly sessions at Dingwalls. A great vocal and infectious vocal is underpinned by killer percussion and a memorable brass lines, while the Star Dish mix attempts to update the track with a somewhat heavier club feel. Nothing short of essential.

Didn't I
Review: With the passing of William Daron Pulliam last year, the music world truly lost a singular and unique talent. Here Californian soul daddies Ubiquity pay homage to his most recognised works "Didn't I See" with a limited edit-focused 12". There is of course the feeling one shouldn't mess with perfection - and this Darondo track certainly falls into that category - but each of the three edits that accompany the original are considered reworks that subtly add some extra character without losing any of its power to move. Kinjo Music founder Dave Allison perhaps excels the most in this regard, subtly nudging the tempo up and adding some extra percussive detail that soul selectors will appreciate.

Packin' Up
Review: Darondo is back, and the amazing story of a once-disappeared Bay Area soul man continues to unfold. More tapes of unreleased material have been discovered, hidden in an attic for 30+ years! Now available for the first time anywhere. On this new vinyl EP we present 5 tracks, four of which have never been released. Starting out with a nice n loud cut of "Legs" for the funk DJs, also featured is the previously unreleased instrumental version. On the flip "Such a Night" sees Darondo in ballad mode with a nod to Roy Ayers or Ramp. "My Momma & My Poppa" is the original version that Darondo recorded prior to the version on "Let My People Go," and the EP is rounded out with a blues driven song called "Packin' Up".

Review: It's strictly San Fran shizzle right here as Ubiquity go to town on one of the most respected faces on their sister imprint Luv N Haight. Clear vinyl and hand-stamped, both sides are smoother than a Barry White impressionist convention. Giles Peterson's Detroitian pal Tall Black Guy extends "Don't Want To Leave You" into a lavish, silky slo-mo nodder, capturing the mournful warmth of the original and reconceptualising for the cosmic youth. Meanwhile on the B we find Ubiquity boss Dandy Teru supping more of a trippy broken beat brew. Quintessential edits.

Wilson Das Neves - "Pick Up The Pieces" (3:13)
Som Tres - "Tanga" (2:04)
Review: Mr Bongo restock a brilliant 7" in their signature Brazil 45s series. The nineteenth to grace it, this blue-starred slice of small wax shone a light on Wilson das Neves' brilliant cover of Average White Band's 'Pick Up The Pieces' on the A, as well as a Mr Bongo fave on the B, Som Tres' potent samba-funk overflow 'Tanga'. The former flexes the historic muscles of a mythic Brazilian percussionist and vibesman, lending fidgety soft feels to AWB's already lull-lifting concoction; then 'Tanga' contrasts to this sense of measuredness with pure animal verve, as Tres' calls out to his bandmates commandingly amid whirlwinds of piano and drums.

Review: Rock A Shaka is hella busy right now and continues to drop mad heat on a very busy schedule. It is now Dave & Earnest who step up with their unique take on reggae. This one is coloured by disco and boogie with dazzling results. 'Moving On' has big horns over soul-stepping beats and retro 80s drum sounds. The vocals drip with sexiness and a killer bassline finishes in style. The version dials it back to a fleshy dub with the tooting horns left in to get your juices going.

Review: The Dave Pike Set was a five-piece jazz band active for only four years from '68 to '72. But in that short time that manages seven albums, and had some standout single success. Two of their biggest - 1969's 'Mathar'/'I'm On My Way' - are repressed here on a 7" that will cost you upwards of L300 if you can find an original. There are some heavy sitar vibes on the a-side to start with, eventually making way for a strident 60s beat that is all psyched-out jazz stylings and raw drums. The flip is a much more after-dinner vibe, with harmonic keys setting a silky tone.

The opening gambit is a strong one that should hook you in for more as it comes in the form of a 7" with two fine funk instrumentals, neither of which have been put out before. Review: Daniel David (FKA Trailer Limon) makes a great impression on Bastard Jazz with his first solo record. This 7" finds him link with the Jazz Mafia for a feature after he has done plenty of work with the legendary San Francisco duo the Pendletons. Because of that he is credited with helping to kickstart the Bay Area's modern funk resurgence but here he shows he has plenty of his own skills too. 'Tambor De Cura' (with Guinu) is bustling jazz that is vibrant and vivacious with big horns, steamy jungle atmospheres, humid pads, bird calls and many other great details that form a hefty groove. 'Devotion' is then a funky jazz fusion with cosmic pads and lush vocals.

'Yes I Am', David's first single of 2021, continues where her previous work left off. It sees her delivering a soulful, super-sweet lead vocal atop a wonderfully retro-sounding soul backing track that reminded us of the similarly inclined work of Durand Jones & The Indications and Timmion Records stalwarts Cold Diamond & Mink. The A-side full vocal take is our pick of the pair, though the accompanying instrumental is also predictably good.

This time around they're celebrating the ascendant jazz funk masterpiece 'A New Day (Is Here At Least)' by legendary saxophonist JC Davis, originally released in 1969 and sounding fresh to this day. John Davis - "I Can't Stop"
Cerrone - "Rocket In The Pocket"
Review: Number three in the School Yard Breaks 7" series brings more stone cold classic breaks on handy dinked 45 format. This time its John Davis' monster b-boy groove "I Can't Stop" back to back with the classic "Rocket In The Pocket" by Cerrone - the infamous French drummer/producer who once said he was the first to put a kick bass drum into the foreground of modern day dance music

I've Been Hurt So Many Times (3:13)
Review: P-Vine Japan does great work once more here by bringing back into print some hugely sought-after sounds from the blues and r&b world. The first release in their new series revives Larry Davis' 1969 Kent Records single, which was originally written by Sherwood Fleming. The A-side, 'For 5 Long Years' delivers a gritty mid-tempo funk-blues groove while the B-side, 'I've Been Hurt So Many Times' (a classic subject for a blues tune) channels Willie Cobbs' signature sound. These will be familiar to anyone who has danced at a Northern Soul event and cannot be slept on.

Life's A Bitch (3:45)
(It Ain't) All Good (4:03)
Review: Cornish funkateer Daytoner rarely fails to deliver the goods, with his semi-regular seven-inch missives being amongst his most potent releases. He's at it again here, delierving two confirmed party-starting workouts that combine live funk and soul style instrumentation topped off with classic hip-hop acapellas. He begins with 'Life's a Bitch', where fast crew rap flows lifted from a much-loved hip-hop cut ride undulating bass guitar, laidback funk breaks and glistening guitars. He flips the script a little on flipside '(It Ain't) No Good', delivering hip-hop tempo beats, deep bass, luscious electric piano motifs and smart use of one of the most celebrated R&B vocals of the 1990s.

Needed You (4:01)
Sicka (4:01)
Review: The hard-touring, heavy-funking, Craig Charles-endorsed Cornish six piece Daytona tease us for their album with this cheeky double-A 45". "Needed You" is a straight up northern soul thumper with relentlessly driving beat, gutsy vocals, big piano rolls and crucial flutes while "Sicka" takes us right back to the sixties with a fiery ode to a greenback classic. Sweaty, forthright and tighter than a nun's purse, bring on the album already!

Keep It Moving (4:09)
Review: Daytoner have got a new album on the way and we can't wait, but before that the group serve up this sizzling new funk single. This crew are well experienced and have travelled far and wide, taking their funk and soul sound to the UK's greatest stages over the last five years. The album was written in isolation during the lockdown and this new pair of singles is a great taster - 'Time' and 'Keep It Moving' both feature lead singer Lucy's fresh vocals as she muses on the importance of time spent with family and friends. The funk-fuelled brass and breaks keep both tunes vibing.
