Review: 9th Creation's Superheros album was a treasure trove of soulful disco tunes that have since become hard to find and ever more desirable. Now the Dynamite Cuts 45s Series has two of the gems from it on this special new 7". It's the first time there a-side has been on its own piece of vinyl and that tune 'Whats Shakin' goes first. It's gloriously glossy and high quality disco with funky horns and big bass, a lush vocal hook and luxuriant sound. 'Much Too Much' is on the reverse and is another floor facing disco tune with a heart swelling vocal and smooth chords that can often fetch L150 on its own.

Review: The latest set of Diguma Edits sees dusty-fingered Japanese digger-turned-re-editor DJ Muro take his scalpel to 'Got to Get Your Love' by Clyde Alexander & Sanction, a suspenseful and action-packed 1980 number from producers Peter Brown and Gary Davis. Muro first cuts down and compresses the ten-minute vocal version, making merry with the track's unusual combination of classic disco grooves, showtunes-style orchestration and eccentric vocals. Over on the flip he does a similar job on the slightly different instrumental take, in turns showcasing the track's crunchy guitars, warming electric pianos, spacey synths and grandiose orchestration.

Review: We will always be stickers for heart aching, lo-fi soul and R&B fusions on neat little 7"s. This new one from Love Touch perfectly fits the bit and finds Amalia melt modern funk and boogie with classic, buttery soul vocals. 'Don't Be Ashamed Of Love' rides on crunchy hits with bold bass notes. It's a sparse, cold arrangement but that vocal adds real warmth while the subtle boogie vibes shine through. On the flip, the pace picks up and your rump will wiggle even more with 'in My Bed' bringing slick and bumpy beats and other exquisite vocal.

Review: "I'm like a monkey with cocaine" goes the vocal on the opening tune here but that conjures up images of quite a riotous scene. In fact, the music is superbly seductive, cool and calm, with low slung disco funk, lush cosmic chords and a laidback, almost aloof vocal all soothing the soul and making for some nice dance floor intimacy. After that collab between Kylie Auldist and Skinny Dipp, Kylie hooks up with Lincoln Room for 'Party At My Place' which has an odds school instrumental disco feel embellished with low slung grooves and lovely claps.

Review: On the second volume in the GATT edits series, Swedish scalpel fiend Beatconductor once again pairs a previously unheard rework with something sought-after from his catalogue. In the latter category you'll find flipside 'Crazy in Kingston', an early noughties mash-up that adds Beyonce's superb lead vocals (and Jay-Z's on-point rap verse) from the peerless 'Crazy in Love' with a dusty old reggae riddim. It's a simple idea, beautifully executed. The brand-new (or at least previously unheard) cut this time around is 'Finger on the Trigger', a lolloping, life-affirming tweak of a 1970s dancefloor soul number that sits somewhere between the stomping heaviness of Detroit Soul and the proto-disco deliciousness of Philly Soul.

It's So Good To Know (7")

Review: Given his reputation as Japan's "king of digging", you'll be unsurprised to learn that DJ Muro's latest scalpel-style Diguma Edits are of thoroughly obscure, hard-to-find disco cuts. For example, an original copy of Best Friend Around's hard to find modern soul-goes-disco number 'It's So Good to Know' - a warming and glassy-eyed cut full of hazy grooves, super-sweet vocals and spacey synth sounds - would cost you hundreds of pounds; Muro's shortened, light-touch edit seems a bargain at a fraction of the cost. Foaster Jackon Group's similarly rare 'Feel the Spirit', a carnival-ready slab of Brazilian influenced jazz-funk/disco-funk fusion, is given the Muro touch on the flip, with equally as exemplary results.

Review: DJ Fryer's Athens of the North imprint has provided soul and disco DJs with some killer 7" reissues since launching earlier this year. Here, he uncovers another obscure but oh-so-good gem. There's little information available about Bileo, aside from the fact that they released just two singles between 1979 and '83. "You Can Win" was there debut. It's a deliciously loose and celebratory chunk of disco-soul featuring spellbinding horns and a cheery, wholeheartedly positive vocal. It's the sort of disco-soul gem that makes us want to hug complete strangers before running into the sea fully clothed. The more low-slung disco-funk flipside, "Let's Go", is almost as good. Recommended.

Review: California based duo The Blemish is made up of is Sheikhbeats and Bo Haan and they have fans in high places from NPR radio to Timbaland. In 2021 they served up their superb album Roboganic but ow comes a first ever physical release from the pair. It features two of the standout cuts form the album and is pressed dup on lovely crushed orange wax. 'California' is a low slung disco groover with hip swing grooves and neat bass work under the timeless vocals, and on the flip 'Serial Jane' gets more busy with funky claps and muted guitar notes under catchy pop vocals.

Review: North Carolina outfit Brief Encounter have long been a cult band amongst funk, soul and disco collectors, leading to reissues of both of their albums (1977's Introducing... The Brief Encounter and 1981's We Want To Play). Here Expansion Records continues the trend of delving deep into their catalogue by offering a new edition of 1976 single 'What About Love'. The title track is undeniably excellent - a sweet, funky and attractive chunk of disco-era dancefloor soul just dripping with emotion. Over on the flip you'll find original B-side 'Get Right Down and Do It', a heavier slab of horn-toting disco-funk pleasure that boasts a seriously addictive bassline and some surprisingly surprising synthesizer flourishes.

Review: Athens Of The North serve up a mighty fine taster of a singles LP that is due to drop soon of Brief Encounters most popular modern and disco sounds. Both the tunes here are stone cold classics licenced direct from the band. 'Get A Good Feeling' is all big horns and rolling rhythms, disco flourishes and squelchy bass. On the flip, the tone changes completely with the heart aching balladry of 'Just A Little Notion'. Falsetto vocals are off set by warmer backing singers, pained wind leads ring out and spoken word sections bring the intimacy.

Review: Laurence "Larry" Brown only saw two singles to his name despite his boundless talents as a producer, instrumentalist and singer, and this record from 1979 is one of them. To break training is to flout the rules of the game - this is often a necessary ritual if one is to see through one's own personal vision quest in life's existential rite-of-passages, such as love and individuation. "I've been walking the line, controlling the line... I ain't been doin' what's right, baby... in the beginning, I'd give up everything for the sake of winning..." such are the musings of a man newly in love.

Review: Expansion's offshoot label is back with a second release and for the occasion have put together a special eco vinyl 10" here that is strictly limited to just 100 copies and is fully deserving of that treatment: Tom Browne Feat. Carol Woods combined to great effect in the 80s on this soul classic that now gets a first-ever single release. It's the sort of immediately heartwarming tune that draws from soul, jazz funk, disco and more to cook up a steamy and excellent groove. On the flip is Diplomats Of Soul with their own super cover of 'Brighter Tomorrow' featuring Brit funk and acid jazz greats Incognito & Imaani.

Review: China Burton's 'You Don't Care About Our Love' is a widely recognised deep funk classic from 1979 which has long been favoured by DJs on the soul circuit. It's not hard to hear why - the tune has everything you need, from a slinky breakdown to an anthemic chorus, and the rhythm section is primed to get bodies moving. There have been scattered bootleg versions of this tune put out before, but now Soul Brother are doing a legitimate job with the vocal and instrumental versions on a fresh 45.

Review: The Record Store Day releases are coming thick and fast right now, and this is another doozy that arrives in limited quantities. British artist Mark 'China' Burton left an indelible mark with his one and only ever release, which is this soulful disco masterpiece. Produced by Adam Sieff and unveiled on the Logo label in 1979, this string-laden gem remains highly coveted, with original 12" copies fetching over L400. The arrangement, crafted by the UK's John Altman, who later collaborated with icons like Diana Ross and Tina Turner, adds to its allure. Altman, known for his work on the iconic 'Walking In The Air' with Aled Jones, lends his expertise to this limited edition release.

Review: 'Storia Fantasy' is a second release from Reparto Vinile that again marries Italo influences to a range of different genres. The label is based in Monferrato in Italy (which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and it is helmed by influential Italian Luca Bernascone. Here he assumes his new production alias Cabopolonio for a super new single. The vocal version is a nice mood tempo roller with lush pines and cosmic twinkles, vibraphone melodies and a nice retro edge to it. The instrumental version is a little more deep and slow. The dub element means it seduces even more and marks a second fine drop from this label.

Review: Adeen Records is back with its The Bird series and this time Cad73 is the one at the buttons. First up he flips the age old classic 'Love and Happiness' into a smooth and seductive sound with lush chords and warming melodies. Flip it over and you will find a rework of 'How Can I Forget You' which becomes a Northern Soul great with big hooks and driving rhythms that will get big reactions in the club. Review: The Carver Area High School Seniors' 'Get Live '83 (The Senior Rap)' is a stone cold party hip hop classic. It has been out of print for some four decades, however, and so has become a rather hard to find and expensive record. Thankfully, Soul Jazz Records have got the rights to this full reissue which was first pressed in 1982 on the private press label Challenger. The cut featured as the standout on Soul Jazz Records' recent 'Yo! Boombox' collection and now standalone as a seven minute stunner. It's an old school party disco delight with great rap and killer beats, all presented with the original artwork.

Review: DC label Peoples Potential Unlimited makes funk like no other. Central Ayr Productions have already dropped great EPs and albums on the label and are now back with this lovely new 7". The band record in various places, mostly around Orlando Florida and here they bring some modern soul and boogie vibes. Review: It's always a buzz to see a new Athens of the North 7" drop onto our shelves. This first drop of the year comes from label regulars Coast to Coast who had their unreleased and self-titled soul album reissued here back in October 2021. It is the opening track from that glorious record that gets its own pressing on 45 rpm here with an instrumental on the flip. The original from core members Mark Beiner and Ben Iverson, 'Love Is The Same' has glorious vocal falsettos and super sweet rhythms that bring feel-good vibes like no other.

Review: Norman Connors 's 'She's Gone' and ''Mr.C' (the title cut from an album of the same name) have never been available on vinyl before but this year's record store day celebrations end that with a nice heavyweight pressing courtesy of Arista. 'She's Gone' is a timeless blend of soul and r&b that is much loved in the soul scene for its fresh composition and stirring, heartfelt vocals. The instrumentation too is next level and superbly fuses horns, strings, and rhythm instruments. Review: It's a damn shame Cool Runners aka the duo of Paul Tattersall and Chris Rodel and was such a short-lived group because the tunes they made are next level. This reissue proves that with their 1982 single 'Checking Out' served up on a 12" with the sought-after 'High on a Feeling' on the flip. The open is lush street soul with boogie bass and twanging funk guitar riffs topped off with a gorgeous vocal. The second offering 'High On A Feeling' has leggier drums and more of a disco feel, but still plenty of brilliant boogie in the bass. Two cult classics, then.

Review: Throughout his career, DJ S has delivered a steady stream of slow-motion re-edits, so it's no surprise to find the former Chopshop contributor pop up on Too Slow To Disco's popular edit series. The four reworks on show are naturally tasteful, classily produced, largely free of the kind of quantized extra beats employed by lesser-quality editors. The Greek scalpel fiend starts by offering his version of a much-loved downtempo disco classic, wisely extending the original version's instrumental passages before introducing the lead vocal ('Groovin'), before dipping the tempo further on the seductive is-it-soul-or-is-it-disco brilliance of 'Sweet Love'. 'Back Again' is a languid chunk of sun-splashed slow motion disco rich in jazzy guitar licks and meandering sax solos, while 'U' is a glassy-eyed, loved-up treat.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Canadian go-slow master Eddie C is back with more of his sumptuous and sensuous grooves on the magnificent Funkyjaws Music. This new 12" kicks off with the emotionally intense and gospel-laced vocal sounds of 'Jesus Calling' with a passionate pastor lighting up the airways. 'Show Me The Way' is a more paired down sound this time with a raw soul edge and nice dusty drums, then 'Superior Disco' brings some lavish string stabs and funky basslines to some killer instrumental grooves. Review: Freestyle Records has got a brilliant and rather rare bit of boogie here in the form of Eddie Capone's 'I Wont Give You Up.' This is the first officially licensed reissue of this 1985 gem by the reggae, funk and soul mainstay of that decade. He played with various noted outfits such as Chairmen of the Board, Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come and Edwin Starr and was also in the short-lived band Casablanca. He founded the Treatment band in the early 1980s and played with a rotating cast of musicians. The tunes included on this 7" are some of them with Diane Jones providing vocals on the A-side, which is the standout gem.

Review: Chuck Edwards (real surname Edwins) is the man behind his family band The Edwards Generation. He formed it after moving his family to the San Francisco Bay area, where they all lived in a motel to start with. By the time of the mid-70s, they had started realising and even put out a full length as well as appearing on TV. Here, Cordial serves up two of their best on a tidy 7". 'Get Up, Get Up' is the funk fuelled and soul-drenched opener with nice lo-fi production and deep drums. 'Get Out On The Dancefloor' is another lo-fi beauty with stomping kicks married to big horn stabs and a characterful vocal.

Review: Ebony Evans is a superb soul talent who for this single worked with Manny Campbell who wrote and arranged. Originally recorded in 2004, 'Loving You Is All I Wanna Do' appeared on the Luv's Fire CD Maxi Single and later on a full album in 2006 through Coastal Records but now debut on vinyl thanks to Soul Direction. On the flip side, Lewzarius' 'Step Up" shines as a rich collaboration between Campbell and Haran Griffin, who is best known for 'Movin' Much Too Fast.' Atlanta-born Lewzarius recorded this track during his time at Coastal Records in the late 90s.

Review: The French pop scene is vast and full of treasures but Claude Francois is one of its more mysterious and mythical characters. He was active on the scene from the 60s until he was taken away too soon in a sad domestic accident in 1978 having been a trained percussionist and something of a teenage sensation. He sure did know how to write some killer grooves, though, and in fact co-wrote and sang the original version of what would become 'My Way,' no less. This one, 'Alexandrie Alexandra' was recorded in October 1977 and now gets some special reruns from the one and only Dimitri From Paris who brings the joyous disco goodness.

Review: Sonic Wax sure is on fire right now. The label has dropped a clutch of brilliantly well sought-out one-sided and limited 7" jams that are the sort of treasure you want to keep to yourself and then drop at exactly the right moment to make sure they make the most impact on the right people. This one from Friendz is a three-and-a-half-minute soul delight with rawness in the vocals, but warmth in the musicianship and funky drums. It's the sort of universal crowd-pleaser that is perfect for end-of-the-night fun.

Review: G. D. & The Big J's 'Movin' On' is a primo funk, disco and boogie melange that has been heating up global dance floors ever since it was first released in 1980. It is a much sought-after jam which, if you can even find an original copy, will cost you upwards of three figures. 'Movie On' is seamless and smooth, a brilliant and vibrant mix of busy guitar riffs, and claps and upbeat drums that come with a lively vocal that says to the heavens with effortless soul. It sounds like basically the same tune is included on both sides you so never have to worry about this one wearing out - which it could well do given how often you will be playing it.

Review: Here comes another all-time classic from the extensive back catalogue of the legendary Miami songstress Gwen McCrae. The instantly recognisable '90% Of Me Is You' has been sampled endless times by hip hop giants like Large Professor, Jaylib, Mobb Deep and more and is a bonafide rare groove gem that is always in demand. Perhaps it's the pairing of the languid guitar and strings, or Gwen's sultry vocals and that steady breakbeat that keeps people hooked. Here it is backed here with its original b-side slow jam 'It's Worth The Hurt' and the whole super-rare 45 has been re-mastered, re-pressed and brought back for the return of the dance floor.

Review: Numero's Hottest Sounds Around series has excelled at unveiling a treasure trove of late-70s Caribbean grooves. Now they look to Trinidad where Stan Chaman's Semp label originally presented the Hamilton Brothers' calypso-disco hit 'Music Makes The World Go 'Round' back in 1978. It is a vibrant sound with multi-layered grooves, plenty of inescapable summer vibes and a tropical edge that cannot fail to bring the good times to any session. On the flip is an instrumental that pairs things back to the bubbly rhythms. What's more, it comes on lovely pink vinyl.

Review: From soul to disco, pop to balladry, Athens Of The North can do it all, and often much better than most. Another exhibit to back that up now comes in the form of this 7" from Isabr'm and his 'If I Had You.' It's a straight up bit of boogie fire, with soul overtones good enough to suit the L850 plus you will pay if you try to get an OG copy. Next to that superb a-side is 'Nothing At All' on the flip, a sombre track with aimless sax leads conveying a sense of romantic loss.

Review: DC archival masters Peoples Potential Unlimited first shone the light on Dwight Sykes and his Jahari project on the must grip Situations cassette late last year, revealing the work of a key player in Michigan's underground boogie scene. Those selectors out there without the means to play tapes in a club setting will no doubt be very thankful to PPU for this 12" that brings together some unreleased demo cuts from Jahari along with a newly remastered version of the superb title track from that cassette. So up top you get two alternate takes on "Fire & Desire" with the studio version a real funk gem, whilst "Situations" sounds all the more sweet and soulful in newly remastered form.

Review: Westend brings more of that glorious disco goodness that they have been so well known and loved for over such a long period of time. This one is a split that kicks off with Jake's 'You Are the Star.' It's propelled by neat and tidy bass guitar riffs with more decorative melodies and riffs up top. The drums have an irresistible sense of slide to them and the vocal is of course the icing on the cake. Chuck Davis Orchestra steps up in the flip with more lush and classy disco complete with effervescent string stabs and more funky bass. 'Spirit Of Sunshine' manages to bottle up just that and douse you in it from start to finish.

Review: High energy, prime time disco from Lamont Johnson featuring Belita Woods, with the funk guitar machinations of 'Mr Bassman' making it an instant floorfiller. That said, the slower 'Burnin' on the flip, with its instantly irresistible Stevie Wonder-esque harpsichord keys, may be much more laid back, but you'd still need to be dead from the waist down not to respond to its groove. Two battle weapons for any funk and disco DJ that they'll treasure the way Putin treasures those nuclear codes.

Review: This red hot new disco 12" from Just What The World Needs is going to get snapped up quick. so act fast or you may be disappointed. The A-side is a massive recut that brings fresh Mid-West boogie vibes over a busy bassline and non-stop drum funk. Add in some big horns and lose percussion and you have a lo-fi dancefloor heater that cannot miss. On the flip is a fresh take on Anthony White's 'Can't Turn You Loose' which draws out the extended version into a loved-up disco groover with a rich and buttery vocal and plenty of lush string action.

Review: Six Nine looks back to go forwards here as the label serves up a couple of super fresh new mixes of a pair of stunning modern boogie and funk tunes. Magoo was the man behind the originals and T Groove is the man on remix duties. Up first are the glossy synths and seductive drums of 'Not Too Late (To Make It Right)'. The leads are withering, the disco dazzle high and the catchiness of the groove all too real. Flip it over for 'Let's Have A Boogie' (feat Heryo) which goes a little bit deeper and seduces you, especially with the buttery vocals.

Review: The mighty Tramp label is as good as it gets when talking about soul sounds. It has been serving them up for loans and has never allowed the quality levels to drop. This latest one is another superb 45rpm from Matter of Taste. This group originally released their debut album on the small German imprint Flame in 1979 and it had one standout cut which is the one presented here. 'Step By Step' is the sort of epic disco burner that lights up the club with its catchy claps, sweet vocals and funky riffs. On the flip is 'Haselief' which completely flips the script and offers an utterly different sound, but one that you need just as much.

Review: The Messin About crew are back once again to show they have made a fine art of arsing about. This 7" offers up two more rarities that have never before made it to vinyl but very much deserve to have done. First up they offer the lush and soulful US disco of Golden Flamingo Orchestra's 'The Guardian Angel' which will warm through any wintery dancefloor. On the flip they change the vibe entirely with Carol Grimes's 'Uphill Peace Of Mind,' which is indeed a grimy UK funk weapon that packs a seriously rhythmic punch.

Review: A serious piece of soul sampling history right here. "Evil Vibrations" is instantly recognisable thanks to De La Soul's "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays". Fast-paced boogie blessed with swooping sugar harmonies, it still sounds as smooth as it did when originally released in 78. Touching stargazing ballad "The Star Children" was even more popular with the hip-hop set scoring cameos on cuts by both RZA and Mobb Deep. Both cuts are taken from the album Help Us Spread The Message. Criminally it's their only LP!
