More Than Machine: Part 1
Client 03 - "Regression Container" (5:53)
Sterac Electronics - "Reinstated" (5:38)
The Advent & Zein Ferreira - "Seven" (5:41)
Christian Smith - "Pressure Drop" (4:14)
Review: Those with a deep knowledge of electro and techno will be salivating at the prospect of More Than A Machine: Part 1, an EP that boasts cuts from such legends of the scene as Sterac Electronics, The Advent and Christian Smith. All deliver the goods, of course, as does rising star Client 03, whose EP-opening 'Regression Container' brilliantly flips between shimmering, deep space ambient and warming, tactile electro dreaminess. Those looking for more rugged and robust club fare should check Sterac Electronics 'Reinstated', with its' out-there lead lines and machine-gun bass, and the sleazy, up-tempo futurism of the Adveny and Zein Ferreira's 'Seven'. Christian Smith's deep, Kraftwerk-influenced 'Pressure Drop' rounds off a predictably strong EP.

Manasyt - "Sister Ping" (3:40)
Secret State - "Dominant Narrative" (5:25)
Brassica - "0898666420" (5:37)
Review: Back in May, the first multi-artist missive from the freshly launched Hearse label sold out in no time at all. We have a feeling that this similarly formatted follow-up will go the same way. '90s survivor Cosmic Force kicks things off in style via the raw, angular riffs, spacey melodies, vocoder vocals and punchy electro rhythms of "Suckers Divide", before Manasyt takes us into industrial electro territory on the fuzzy and breathless "Sister Ping". Over on side B, Secret State ups the tempo on the undeniably Drexciyan "Dominant Narrative", while Brassica peppers a high-octane rhythm track with dystopian noises and malfunctioning computer electronics on killer closing cut "0898666420".

Luz1e - "Draw The Line" (4:29)
Sod-90 - "Vinyl Corset" (4:05)
Review: The well regarded Avoidant hits a 20th release in superlative fashion here with some hefty names offering up hefty sounds. None other than techno pin up and Berghain hero Marcel Dettman opens up with 'Motorman' which is a dystopian number riddled with spoken words, bright metallic flashy and grubby bass. Scottish legends Slam pick up the pace with the knick-snapping drums and hits of sleazy electro banger 'Into The Light' and then Luz1e get you riding on rubbery, bumping ghetto-tech drums on 'Draw The Line' before last of all comes the coruscated intergalactic battle that is Sod-90's 'Vinyl Corset.' Tight as you like.

Review: Spanish label Sungate has become a truly buy on sight label thanks to its eye-catching artwork by Abel Fdez and scores of quality digital and vinyl releases from the likes of Jozef K & Tinman, Iori, Skudge and many more. Their latest release comes from Estrato Aurora, who you might have spotted on Bliq, and his frequent collaborator Siarem. Between them, the pair whip up a classy strain of minimally-minded electro which locks into simmering, understated beats and uses subtle atmospheric touches rather than the usual punchy synth leads and basslines you commonly associate with the genre. It's a fresh approach which serves them well, and also gives devoted electro DJs some interesting tools for tweaking the energy in a set without losing the essence of the sound.

Extrawelt - "Hail The Whale" (Coexisting mix) (6:45)
Djedjotronic - "NDE" (4:45)
Ste Roberts - "The Rebirth 2.0" (6:44)
Ivna Ji - "Rescape" (6:19)
Review: 20/20 Vision are exiting planet Earth once again with the latest in their perfectly formed series of electro explorations, as Extrawelt leads the charge with an illustrious slice of braindance-tinted funk titled 'Hail The Whale (Coexisting Mix)'. Djedjotronic follows that up with a bold blast of mammoth synth work which hits pretty damn hard without being pointlessly brutal. Ste Roberts takes a break from his self-titled label run to offer up a freaky foray into acid-speckled territory, and Ivna Ji gets expressive with a rich palette of synths moving in harmony around a sharp and snappy beat.

Hoax Believers - "Short Circuit" (4:30)
Sound Synthesis - "Vertex43" (4:47)
Univac - "H Beat" (6:58)
Review: There is some serious electro talent on this new EP from Fanzine, starting with now US-based, UK-favourite Carl Finlow. His machines are in fine fettle once more as crisp, kicking electro rhythms are overlaid with bright, silvery, pixelated melodic fireworks on the sublime 'Organoiods'. Hoax Believers get more gritty with the sheet metal snares and in-your-face arps of 'Short Circuit' while Sound Synthesis offers something moody and unsettling on their 'Vertex43'. Univac will make your eyes water with the abrasive textures of 'H Beat.'

Review: Bitterfeld continues to blaze its own electro trail with a seventh outing that again its top draw. This one is a various artistic collection under the title For A Bitter Tomorrow: Band 2 and opens up with Salomo's 'Bodytalk', a crisp and ice cold electro rhythm before Interviews bathe you in gloriously deft sci-fi melodies on 'Let Go' and Qwerty's 'Kisela Neman' then brings some madness with crashing hits and molten acid lines. Jonbjorn's 'Chica' closes with similarly high impact electro sounds and raw textures.

Review: The latest one on Orson sees Daniel Savio teaming up with Mesak for some lean and mean electro gear. Stockholm's Savio has gifted us reams of flexible, idiosyncratic machine jams over the years, while Finland's Mesak has been on a rampant run of late across labels like Klakson. On this four tracker we get to run the gamut from pumped up peak time pulser 'Tungt Vatten' to downtempo braindancer 'Surt Regn', all powered by a smorgasbord of blipping analogue-isms and keen studio instincts. If you're serious about your machine music, you're absolutely going to dig this one.

Review: Scanone is a producer who has proven his versatility and so it's no wonder he's been tapped up for some killer tunes by the Reposition label. This blistering electro EP features three originals that mix up industrial textures with caustic drums and star-gazing synth work. 'Vivre' is an eye-watering opener with sheet metal sounds and frosty pads, 'Kraft' is then a slower more pensive electro soundscape and 'Vertabre' has a truly brutal groove that will rattle the walls of any club space, as well as dislodge brain cells. Sync 24 rounds things out with a remix of the same cut that becomes a sonic blizzard.

Millenium Sound (Selway New Millenium version) (6:05)
Millenium Sound (Sync 24 remix) (5:03)
Millenium Sound (Transparent Sound remix) (7:22)
Review: Way back in 1998, New York techno scene stalwart John Selway opened his Zoids Volume 2 EP with a quirky chunk of razor-sharp, acid-fired electro called 'Millennium Sound'. On the eve of its 25th birthday, Selway has decided to get the track remixed by some serious electro talents. Keith Tenniswood kicks things off as Radioactive Man, offering a fiendishly sub0heavy, alien-sounding electro rub that's guaranteed to put extra pressure on bassbins and sub cabinets, before Selway himself re-frames the cut as a moody, foreboding chunk of sci-fi electro excellence. Over on the flip, Sync 24 delivers a more percussively intense and weighty dark electro roller, while Transparent Sound joins the dots between classic 80s electro and the cybernetic moodiness of Selway's 1998 mix.

Recollect (6:32)
Review:
Four years on from putting this EP out digitally, John Selway starts his own new label with a first ever vinyl pressing of it. He is an artist with a history that dates back to the nineties and takes in some high class minimal and electro funk on a range of labels, as well as plenty of production credits with Deep Dish, and this EP is one of his best. 'Shimmerdown' is super cosmic deep house with a synth based soul straight out of Detroit, while 'Solas' shows off a more high speed techno sound that is riddled with trippy motifs that keep your mind working. 'Recollect' is more stripped back, darker and pensive and completes an EP rich in stylistic variation.

Review: There are few labels that have been as constantly excellent as Lobster Thermin, no matter the genre it turns its attention to. Here is it electro from Shedbug that gets us all worked up on a nice purple marbled vinyl. 'Ambroxitil' is a quick and crunchy opener steeped in cosmic tension with icy electro lines and dark bass. 'Timeframe' then has a lo-fi and sludgy feel with muffled drums and bass making for a distant cyborg rave. There is beauty and inward reflection in the sweeping melodies of 'Strive For More', angular grooves that make you jerk your body on 'Waouu' and a hyperspeed Voiski remix to close down.

Review: After a smattering of release in the latter stages of the last decade, David Koch revives his Shokh alias for this engrossing 12" on the ever-trusty brokntoys. The label is a natural home for Koch's scuffed and evocative strain of electronica, where the crunch of lo-fi electro serves as a vessel for strung-out synthesis that couldn't care less about the dancefloor. There's space for stripped down beat tracks, as on the mechanised 'Front Two' and purring 'Kolovento', but this is machine music as a mode of expression for your darkest dystopian fantasies. Sink into closing track 'Voyage Voyage' and you'll hear an orchestra of decaying circuits and cranky filters spelling out your deepest future shock fantasies.

Proton Mass (6:15)
Centronix (6:02)
Axiom (6:55)
Cascade Lasers (6:14)
Review: Carl Finlow has been a prominent name in UK electro since the mid-90s, releasing music at an astonishing rate under a variety of monikers. Silicon Scally defines his most strictly electro-oriented project, reflective of the Kraftwerk era and the emerging electro-scene, with releases on respected labels such as Cultivated Electronics, CPU and of course 20/20 Vision, with music from a variety of Carl's monikers being amongst the labels earliest releases.

'Crushed' is a sought after album project originally self-released on Finlow's Bandcamp during the 2020 lockdown. We felt the release was to important to be overlooked without a much deserved run of vinyl, so have pressed a limited run of records featuring futuristic electro highlights and the best unreleased cuts.

'Proton Mass' kicks things off with perfectly crafted robotic funk, solid mechanical breaks and mind bending glitches, setting the landscape for a journey into the abyss with Silicon Scally unshakeably at the helm. 'Centronix' follows up with razor-sharp rocking beats, squelchy bass and jarring grooves as if designed for high pace no nonsense club sets from the likes of DJ Stingray or Helena Hauff.

On the flip side 'Axiom' takes us deeper into the void with dark basslines, complex drums and unapologetically disorientating frequencies. A track that makes us question if Finlow has transcend to a future state where he is more machine than man, sending psychoactive messages in the form of killer electro cuts.

'Cascade Lasers' wraps up this epic dose of electro with interstellar energy, driving things home with deep bass wobbles, high octane breaks, wrapped grooves and tormenting yet playful synth licks. Yet another release that has us convinced the late great Andrew Weatherall was indeed correct!

"For quite a number of years now I have been convinced that Mr Finlow is a conduit for musical transmissions beamed from a parallel universe, sometime in the future" - Andrew Weatherall.

Inspired by the oncoming anxiety of a technological hell (trust us, we all feel it, Carl), it's either join the AI death cult or die, as a straight 60+ minutes of generative electro stabbery and post-neural warpings make the entire project sound like a supernatural server processing vast numeric quantities of infectious bytes.

This is of course an alias of Carl Finlow who is a master of making his machines sing with a sense of human realness. Bubbling melodies define each of the cuts as well as a cinematic sense of atmosphere that really takes you somewhere.

Up on the A-side is 'Void 93,' a terse mix of busted breaks, heavy bass hits and jungle energy that's run through with dark vocal snippets. Review: The Maltese machine funk specialist himself Keith Farrugia is back once more with yet more of his impeccable electro business as Sound Synthesis. This time the prolific producer is shoring up on Burnski's Infiltrate label with four cool and deadly cuts which build on his previous drops for 20:20 Vision, Furthur Electronix, Orbital Mechanics and more besides. Review: More hand-stamped headiness from Keith Farrugia AKA Sound Synthesis on his own Orbital Mechanics imprint. In keeping with the Maltese producer's trademark sound, what's on offer is an attractive, highly accomplished blend of electro, glassy-eyed underground electronica, acid and ambient techno. Our pick of an extremely strong bunch is closing cut 'Memory Re-Generation', a deep, melodious and loved-up affair in which TB-303 acid lines and gorgeous melodies bubble away atop tight electro beats, warm bass and ultra-dreamy chords. There's plenty to get the pulse racing elsewhere across the EP too, including the lovely - and hard-to pigeonhole - opener 'Don't Let Go' and the tighter, tougher electro club jam 'Let The Music Take Control'.

Review: Earlier this year, Maltese machine music specialist Sound Synthesis (real name Keith Farrugia) made his Electro label debut with the rather good Access On My Heart EP. Here he makes his first contribution to the Spanish imprint's ongoing Transmissions series with another quartet of quality cuts. He begins by fantasising about a studio session with B12 on the gorgeous and emotive 'A Night With Rutter', where razor-sharp acid lines, sparkling melodies and heart-aching pads ride a deep bassline and punchy electro beats, before opting for a more spacey and far-sighted sound on 'Elecktrow'. Over on the flip, 'Re-Wire Your Brain' is a more skeletal, futuristic affair that sits somewhere between Kraftwerk and Egyptian Lover, while 'Welcome To My World' is a tough but atmospheric chunk of vocoder-sporting club electro.

On 'Electrical Synpases' he more than proves himself up to the task, creating a monster of a track which will send limbs flailing as soon as the drop hits. It kicks off with French collective Spaced Out Krew and their timeless, boogie driven disco funk. The music was written during 2020 by Spleen3000 and Marius Cyrilou of Ceeofunk and right from the first note of 'Doudou Bourbon' it is pure class. There are starry-eyed melodies, rasping basslines and curious vocals that all add up to a nice cosmic disco sound.

The Italian-born, Dutch-based sound engineer always gets the most of out his machines and that's clear from the off again here: 'Tornero' starts with delicate tumbling arps and slow, heavy drums. 'Non Ce L'Hai Solo Tu' (Spaventi Dazzurro Twist mix) has popping 808s and talk box vocals with subtle flashes of acid and fizzing chords. There's a disco feel to the cosmic melodies of 'Dreaming Egyptus' and 'Costa Brava' has more bubbling arps and gurgling acid lines to get you moving and grooving.

'Cartographic Venture' kicks off and is a ten-minute odyssey with cold melodies and tinny drums that have a retro-future feel. Distant vocals add an extra edge to 'Coming On Monday' which has wispy sci-fi lines darting about over more cold drums. 'Exposition To Revolution' closes out with an introspective feel but a widescreen sound that is clean and has lovely spiraling skyward melodies.

Review: 'Lords Of Miami' is a fantastic name for this new one from Domesticated, a label run by one of Berlin's best electro aficionados, Robyrt Hecht. Sshadess, The Coomers, Girlcop and Emscho Shoshe each contribute original cuts ranging from the janky to the smooth, with choice bits like 'Carbonara' remaining unpretentious and not-too-produced, yet also peppery on the glitches. Shoshe's 'Give Up' lends an experiment to vocal booty house too, adding an extra creep factor to the genre with freq-scooping phasers on the sample.

Review: For anyone remotely keyed into the early wave of techno in the UK, the promise of unreleased material from Stasis is a very exciting prospect indeed. Steve Pickton's project was tantalisingly short lived, but we were gifted some seminal albums and EPs in that time. Fortunately he's now struck up a steady working relationship with De:tuned, who are coaxing some unreleased material out of unearthed DATs that allow us to hear more of that next-level machine soul he's capable of. It's staggering to think tracks this good weren't released back in the day, but fortunately they have been now, with 'Hard Emotion' possibly taking the cake thanks to its gorgeous, rounded bassline and enchanting synth lines up top.

Review: Brazilian electro provocateurs STK have been carving out a distinctive niche with their stripped back machine funk on their own Sudd label, dropping two quality EPs last year. They're at it once again with this fresh crop of workouts from the Drexciyan school of electronics, offering three original tracks which aren't afraid to head into more experimental pastures. Meanwhile Unique Reason steps up for a remix of 'Stoned' which holds true to the title's vibe while offering a different slant on the STK sound.

Anywhere (dub) (4:56)
Finally (dub) (5:01)
Review: NC4K's second hand-stamped 12" is more irresistible garage business from Stones Taro. 'Anywhere' (dub) has lovely warm woodblock hits and oscillating low ends with minimal drums and an aching r&b sample that brings the soul and draws you into the skeletal rhythm. Flip it over and you get something more fleshy and fulsome with 'Finally' (dub). Here the drums have more snap and are more prominent with a corrugated bassline down low and a heavily treated classic vocal sample the hook up top. Two killers that mix the old school and the new school in style.

CMYK & Driahn - "How's The Sauce?" (6:07)
Driahn - "Tea Breaks" (6:13)
Review: The fourth release of Barcelona-based label Kommuna finally lands after being teased late last year. It is a various artists affair that includes the opening gem from breakbeat legends Stopout. They ride rough and ready over a lumpy groove thats full of angst, then Pekkuliar & Driahn step out with a more cosmic bit of chunky funky on 'Dazed Transmission.' CMYK & Driahn servo up a beautifully sappy out mining affair in 'How's The Sauce?' with some great vocal snippets and Driahn's 'Tea Breaks' pairs cinematic ambiance and lush pads with tightly woven electro bass.

Review: Sumerian Fleet is a collaborative project from Mr. Pauli and Alden Tyrell, and alongside their couple of excellent albums on Dark Entries these dark side synth wave devotees also delivered a coveted record to Clone's West Coast Series back in 2010. Finally, that record is getting a repress to thwart the sharks and get grimy, gothic electro back in the hands of the real fans. Every track is a masterpiece, but one of our personal favourites is the rubbery nightmare funk of 'Blech Erkrankung', which comes on like Joy Division and Front 242 getting in a fight and falling down the stairs together.

Review: Dual-minded Frenchman Louis Pierret makes his debut on Karat as he continues to explore the extremities of his passions and interests over four crisp, forward-thinking tracks. 'Changes' eases us in with big swooning emotional tracks and a classically minded 808 electro beat before 'Davy Jones' eases us down a much deeper channel with dub techno soul and a jazz sensibility. Flip for the main attraction as 'Achab' shouts the orders by way of venomous acid, glacial chords and whale-like textures before 'Rhune' brings back ashore on a boat made in the heart of Detroit. Precision engineering. Bon voyage.

Kostas G - "Spectrum" (7:24)
Review: When it comes to excitable club fodder rooted in club sounds of the late 80s and 90s, the Tone Dropout crew consistently delivers the goods. They're at it again on their 11th multi-artist extravaganza, which giddily sprints between acid-fired breakbeat house with glassy-eyed melodic motifs and spacey bleeps (Sween and Alphonse hook-up 'Downfall'), trancey early progressive house revivalism ('Odyssey T3D' by XOTR), intergalactic electro-bleep fusion (the punchy, Kraftwerk-on-pills excellence of Samuel Padden's 'Teslas Still Alive') and classy bleep and breaks nostalgia (Kostas G's pleasingly sub-heavy, funk break-driven 'Spectrum').
