Review: A mock-vintage version of a well-known but also tragic reggae classic, 'Satta Massagana' by the Abyssinians. Legend has it that the original tune was slated for release on Studio One, but, for reasons unknown, the dubplate ended up rejected by the label's founder, Coxsone Dodd. Indeed, sometimes it's a record's repression, not its release (get it?), that lends it its staying power. To add insult to injury, this new cover version by the Dig This Way All Stars and Yakka was first produced in acetate form and ended up cracked and unplayable only weeks after its receipt. A miracle cure, in the form of a vinyl restoration service in Rome, salvaged the record: just know that you're in an extra lucky position to be hearing this one at all. A cursed record? Perhaps, but the release of 'Sata' also implies proof of the original song's point; that some higher power really did give praise.

Review: Originally released in 1977, 'Deliver Me From My Enemies' is one of those roots reggae tunes that became something of a cornerstone of the gene from the visionary Vivian "Yabby You" Jackson. It is the title track of his third album and was recorded at Channel One Studio with mixing by the great King Tubby so was as real and authentic as it gets. It is a short and sweet sound that mixes up spiritual vocals with haunting production marked by Yabby You's signature mystical sound of minor-key melodies, deep bass and evocative horns. drumming. Backed by top session musicians, it reflects Jackson's deep Rastafarian beliefs and critiques of social injustice and marked a crucial release in the evolution of conscious reggae.

Review: The next tasty drop from the Fruits label, now well over 50 releases deep, is a pan-European affair featuring Bristol singer Joe Yorke and Swiss reggae band The 18th Parallel. The original on the A-side is a deliciously authentic and super sweet bit of rootsy lover's rock. 'End Of The Day' has lazy-as-you-like guitar riffs over loose drums with a falsetto from Yorke soaring high up in the sky on a warm summer's day. On the flip side comes the traditional dub version which is more empty and sparse to allow the reverb room to make its mark while the original vocal is also allowed plenty of space to bleed into.

No return to the Jive disintegrates a familiar groove into digital detritus, burning down the house (genre) in the process. Review: With a drowsy, loved-up trademark sound that sits somewhere between the beach, bedroom and the dancefloor, Canada's Yu Su is a great fit for Music From Memory offshoot Second Circle. The resultant EP is arguably her strongest to date. She begins by enlisting the help of Michelle Helene Mackenzie, who provides a drowsy spoken word vocal on the ultra-deep and starry brilliance of "Little Birds, Moonbath". Fellow Vancouver residents Pender Street Steppers lend a hand on the deep and picturesque shuffle of "Tipu's Tiger", while "Of Yesterday (Instrumental)" sees Yu Su wrap meandering synth solos atop hazy chords and gentle tribal drums. Elsewhere, "The Ultimate Which Manages The World" is dubbed-out and effortlessly Balearic, while "Words Without Sound" offers up more intricate hand percussion and some sparse electronic elements.

Review: For those who know, Eugene 'Yonachak' Cline is a genius producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist who hails from St Lucia. This new long player on Hornin Sounds shines a light on that with some of his finest cuts from the 70s and 80s serve dup in all their glory. Opener 'Too Much Confusion" is a a deep roots joint filled with suffering, Yonacha's vocal fluttering at the top end as he relives his pain. An instrumental version and two different dub versions close out the first side, with two different takes of the more ponderous dub joint "Rejoice In Jah" taking care of the flip along with the much busier "Calypso Fever". Vital stuff.

Review: Bristol based collective Young Echo feature many a hero of the local scene including Jabu, Kahn, Vessel, Ossia and Killing Sound among many others. Featuring what has been described as skeletal dancehall, dread electronics, outsider pop and love songs swaying in hacked up ambience - be prepared! From the sludgy fentanyl groove of "Sedated", the jagged beat experiment on "Bibber Heads" or lo-fi industrial textures like "Oh, Won't You" or "Wicked Ones" which get rather abrasive. Then again there are more ethereal moments and these were the ones we enjoyed the most - like on the sombre "Stare" or the sexy suspense of "Oran" (Version).
