Negativ Terminal Data (8:11)
Song For Louise (2:18)
Life's A Killer (part 1 & 2) (9:49)
Review: Mark Phillips and Rob Lawrence made some of the heaviest industrial music during the 80's, and certainly some of the best the UK has seen, under the name 5X0D. This 1982 reissue was way beyond its time back then, bringing together the energy and cutting edge of techno and acid together with the chilling ambience of early synth music by the likes of Kraftwerk and the rest of the German 70's lineage. Take away the vocals and "Negativ Terminal Data" literally sounds like an early Chicago experimentation by the house legends of the day. It's certainly a recommended title and a highlight for this week's digging selection.

Review: A Split Second's cult coldwave EP Flesh was dropped back in 1986 on Antler Records. The band of Marc Heyndrickx, and Peter Bonne (aka Chrismar Chayell) only formed a year earlier but his debut single made a huge impact and has become a real classic of the EBM and wave world ever since. Numerous albums followed well into the 90s but rarely did the pair ever top this - the jerking rhythms, ravey electronics and retro-future chords all resonating as much with audiences now as they did back then.

Review: Rudolf Abramov describe their sound as 'a response to a seemingly endless conflict about disgust, acceptance and love.' The Berlin-based duo are certainly pretty hard to define, as is proven on this five track outing that veers from something close to the Brothers From Different Mothers sound, to lo-fi Irish punk folk. And if that's not grabbed your attention, we don't know what ever could. Lazy Soldier', with words spoken by Brendan Cleary and an overwhelming feeling of counter culture to its simple stomped drums, whooshing synths, and bass guitar underpinning the speech. And 'Cold Feet' opens the scoring with a broken, twisted, psychedelic workout somewhere between 1970s rock and contemporary dancefloors. Better yet, Losing Perspective is so much more besides, too.

Review: Mannequin's line in techno is always steely and fad-free, so Alessandro Adriani is a perfect person to step up and make the next contribution to its catalogue. There is an electro overtone to the opener with its muscular rhythms and zippy synths making for a dark, dystopian vibe. 'Life Reborn' then ups the energy levels with paddy kick drums beneath coruscated arps and tumbling hits that bring a hint of old-school EBM to the party. 'Spectres' is more overtly dark and hard and menacing with its ghoulish vocals and 'Digital Space Interface' then takes off to the cosmos on more sleek lines and something machine drum funk.

Review: While Detroit is usually associated to either house or techno, history tells us that there have been a few key bands to stem out of its industrial landscape. ADULT is one such outfit, made up of Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller, a duo whose tunes began to emanate back in the late 90s under the Artificial Material moniker. Admittedly, the techno element is contained here, but their rough, molecular experimentations are rich with aggressive electronic fervor, making them a natural part of the city's heritage. Jack White's legendary Third Man Records presents their Live At Third Man LP, a wild-eyed collection of some of their best tunes from recent and past years, all of them offering us something unexpected and, ultimately, absolutely raucous. Forget that designer shit, this is the real deal when it comes to noisy post-punk with an electronic edge.

Dreams Of Wrestlers (5:44)
Review: A new collaboration of Philoxenia Records founders Luigi Di Venere and Neu Verboten, Affekt Unit is informed by an aim to "spark new feelings on the dancefloor". The three track Discorgy EP celebrates their musical obsessions - Italo house, Frankfurt EBM-house and trance - with the result proving an electrifying crossover of these classic genres together with surprising new sounds. 'Oct-Opus' boasts a serious electro component, fused with progressive trance, UK bass, techno, transcendental rave and even a climactic outbreak of rave-era breaks. The title track 'Discorgy' draws from Euro dance and EBM, experimenting with a polyrhythmic bass line and bringing the kind of 'stadium house' that The KLF were always aiming for. Closing track 'Dreams Of Wrestlers' is cosmic house at its sweetest and beefiest, spruced here and there with Italo stabs and pianos, drum machine fills and some lovely subtle filtering. Not so much a case of something for everyone than everything from everyone, you might even say.

Review: Clara and Armand are the two producers behind the new Agar Agar project, and the French duo clearly intend to take electropop back to its golden days... we have absolutely no problems with that. This is their first release, and it comes courtesy of the Cracki label, a Parisian collective formed in 2010 that has been putting out nothing but fire since its birth; moreover, the imprint has scouted a lot of new talent from the streets. We would dub this sort of music disco-not-disco, a slow and mellow blend of slo-mo dance moves that often verge towards the utterly abstract. Most importantly, these are tunes that will be enjoyed by indie fans, and they should certainly not be looked at as mere 'dance' tracks. There is plenty to explore in here, and Agar Agar will surely pop back up on our radars very soon. Recommended!

Review: Ale Mania is Andrew Montoya, a San Diego native who originally released "Center" on his 2011 EP A, Who Sings The Beat. A serving of stylish synth disco-noir, the track gets a re-rub by Stuttgart retrovert Mick Wills who lends his midas touch as always. He first takes the razor to the "Mick Wills Edit Intro" which does exactly what it says on the tin, working the suspense of the intro's haunting strings and arpeggio mainly, before unleashing the power. On the flip the edit gets into full swing working the main groove and Montoya's wicked and sleazy vocals.

"Civil Defense" by Danny Alias first emerged in 1984, a strange proto-everything-that-has-come-since track which was spun by the great Ron Hardy and has been a long term favourite of Smagghe and his KTDJ cohorts. It gets another lease of life thanks to Smagghe and Leon Oakey's always entertaining Les Disques De La Mort label with no less than five different versions to choose from, including a re-edit from the aforementioned Ron Hardy.

Review: Earlier this year Minimal Wave offshoot provided one of this year's most visceral dancefloor weapons in Kino-I, the debut from Doug Lee's new An-I project. Taking inspiration from techno, jack, industrial and punk, An-I successfully drew a line under some of the Berlin-based artist's previous disco-flavoured endeavours. And then some! If you like the Kino-I 12" you will love the new triplet of An-I productions housed on this appropriately titled Gutz 12". The title track alone should come with a health warning; such is the furious onslaught of machine funk it contains, whilst the unnerving "Rut" is the most schizophrenic production you will hear this year. Best of all id closing track "Save Us" sounds like a cross between in Aeternam Vale and Silent Servant. Pressed on a rather thick and dashing slab of magenta orange vinyl!

Review: Khidi rolls out another anniversary EP here and it is another various artists affair that takes no prisoners. On their opener, Ancient Methods & OTHR bring some hellish metal and industrial overtones to the stomping, vicious 'Vast Vanishing' with its horror-core vocals. Roman & Boyd Chidt don't let up but offer a more linear and streamlined bit of stomping techno pressure. Silent Servant unleashes lashings of metallic synths over his signature tech sounds and then the floating loops of Unhuman & Vulkanski suspend you just above a rusty old factory floor.

This nostalgic project founded by Andrea Noce and Alexander Arpeggio in 2014 was revitalised in 2023. Initially a live setup of synths and drum machines, it evolved into a collection of songs with minimal-wave grooves and haunting lyrics in English and German, kinda reminiscent of Siouxsie Sioux and Gudrun Gut. Following a breakup, both pursued solo careers, with Andrea releasing music internationally and Alexander launching a label. Now, their timeless recordings have come back to public attention and arrive in the form of this vibrant album.

Bluer Than Ever (6:26)
Review: Dan Andrei is arguably one of the finest selectors of this generation and a master minimal producer who makes electronic music of the highest order. His latest outing sees him inaugurating his own brand-new label alongside Claudiu Stefan. Rainbow Hill is a platform for their more personal ideas and starts with four more of Andrei's brilliantly deft yet dramatic tracks. 'Numan's Touch' kicks off with rolling drums and bass and a fine eco-system of cosmic pads, twinkling keys and fizzing synths that are theatrical and involving. 'What Else?' then gets darker and more intense with heady loops and wispy pads, and again the ante is upped and the darkness pervades once more on the tense and taught dub-tech roller 'This Is What I See'. Last of all, 'Bluer Than Ever' floats above the floor with airy pads and radiant chords. A perfect 5am vibe.

Review: The story of this one revolves around San Diego native Anthony "Antone" Williams. He was one day alone in a studio, messing about with the gear and before he knew he it lay down the haunting rhythm that underpins the tune now presented here by the good folks at Athens of the North. It's a sinister, restless one that got released as a hugely limited 7" on Unity Records with otherworldly soul production and a pained vocal up top. Post punk soul, some call it, and that's a fitting descriptor. A remix appears on the flip but the allure of the original is hard to beat.

More than ten years on they are back with 'Endless Skies' which is a new EP full of analogue warmth, signature synth designs and aching strings. Of course, Jagroe's unique voice features and brings extra allure to the beats. Aroy Dee steps up with an edit of the title cut and lays in some more form drums and pairs back the vocals to make things even darker. On the flip you'll find the throbbing bass and off-kilter keys of 'Fear the Night' with a dark version going even more into the shady unknown.

Review: A fascinating new slice of neue Deutsche welle from the artist Eine Welt. The track romanticizes the traditional Middle Eastern dish, Knafeh, through the lens of post-punkish electronics, German rawism, and myriad layering and production. The fact that an artist would go to such great pains to record, master, press and distribute a song with such a niche subject matter truly shows the power of Turkish cuisine. Clearly, even in back the '80s, there was mutual cultural appreciation between the Germans and the Turkish.

Here, they've unearthed another overlooked gem - Art Fine's previously rare-as-hen's-teeth dark Italo-disco gem 'Dark Silence'. It's pretty much a straight copy of the New Wave-inclined original, with the sparser, looser 'Long Version' joining the dense 'Art Fine Version'.

Ghost Station (5:58)
Review: Swiss producer Mehmet Aslan has been enjoying his most prolific year to date, returning from a two-year absence with a gaggle of well-regarded records. His latest outing is less obviously dancefloor-focused than much of his work, but no less enjoyable for it. A-side "Efjun" is an off-kilter, slo-mo treat, with the Berlin-based producer peppering a skewed rhythm track with dreamy vocals, nagging electric piano hooks and intoxicated electronics. Arguably even better is wonky flipside "Ghost Station", a hypnotic affair where pulsing, kosmiche style motifs and lo-fi synthesizer riffs cluster around lo-fi machine drums and a mind-altering bassline. It's brilliantly out-there and ghostly, all told, and is one of the producer's most arresting tracks to date.

Autarkic is a cold wave project from Tel Aviv musician Nadav Spiegel whose work is new to us at Juno HQ but most certainly a fine addition to the Golf Channel canon. Review: Axel Frey didn't make many records - though he did guest on a few - but he was responsible for a genuine underground classic, hard-to-find 1986 single 'Geronimo'. Here the song finally gets the reissue treatment, allowing us to once again wallow in its attractive late-night mix of bubbly, Euro-disco style sequenced synth-bass, metronomic machine drums, ultra-dreamy chords and jaunty melodies. The A-side vocal version is superb - proper soundscape, club-ready melancholic synth-pop - but it's the flipside 'Special Instrumental Mix' that really gets us going. Full of dub style delay effects, stripped-back groove sections and echoing synthesizer sounds, it's an undeniably Balearic chunk of European club fodder from a time when house music was only just beginning to emerge from the United States.

They put out one album and only a handful of EPs on Westside Music but 'Loosing You' remains the most acclaimed. Here it gets a full remaster job by the DBH label out of Germany. The original is a future-retro slice of dreamy but driving synth pop with a forlorn vocal. There is a slightly more beefy radio version as well as an instrumental dance. Review: One of Frankfurt's best answers to New Order, Axodry consisted of Talla 2XLC and Ra/Hen, two DJs, producers and synth maestros with an adept flair for gated reverb-ing, sampling and cheesy vocalising. 'You' is absolutely covered in processing and compression, characteristic of the duo's contemporaneous synthpop inspirations such as Depeche Mode and John Foxx. Giggles, strange impacts and extra dub FX adorn the new mixes of the single on this new 12" version from DBH; the 'Beasty Dub' mix is stellar as ever, while the new unreleased version sounds well asphyxiated, dry. 'Suspense', finally, explores a misty backroom of chopped tape culture EBM and horror movie samples.

It was 1982 when he first released this EP, and it's been a classic, and a favourite of ours, ever since. In fact, "Electricidade" is so powerful because it sounds like it could have been made today; its tenebrous synths filling the airwaves from every angle, giving the track a strange sensation of lust and wonder. "Barely Alive" is the kind of sinewy proto-industrial cut that will appeal to fans of Ministry's earlier work, when the synths reigned supreme and there was pop to match the noir. Half a galaxy away from a part of England known for keeping two feet firmly rooted to the ground, calling spades spades and taking no nonsense from nobody. Often producing under the moniker K.I.D. during the 1980s, and making most of his sounds after relocating to Munich, Germany, Bastow's attention to detail, sense of space and spatiality, gauge of groove and understanding of what makes a dancefloor move cannot be understated. There's a whole raft of Lipelis remixes for the nu-disco set dating back to 2006, but it feels like the Russian producer has stepped up his game of late. Inbetween some killer edits for LIES and an upcoming Public Possession 12" as TMO, Lipelis dons his Beard In Dust guise for the latest release from the mysterious Bahnsteig 23 label. If you were a fan of that aforementioned LIES release or any previous BAH 12 it's highly likely you will dig the four cuts here with Lipelis drawing for some obscure sources with eminently danceable results.

Senor Paraiso (6:57)

Coconut Paradise (5:01)
Review: Under the Beard In Dust alias, Leonid Lipelis has produced some of the most inspired re-edits released over the last decade, often turning chunks of long-forgotten Eastern European disco, boogie, synth-pop and AOR into quirky dancefloor gems. He's at it again here, launching the Crudo Rircordi imprint via a trio of eccentric, mid-80s treats. With its driving, kick-drum driven beat, addictive bassline, foreboding synthesizer motifs and Mediterranean guitars, 'Senor Paraiso' is a Balearic proto-house gem, while 'Kirkovmoroder' is a cheery chunk of AOR synth-pop turned into a tongue-in-cheek dancefloor treat. 'Coconut Paradise', meanwhile, is an Italo-disco style slab of peak-time campness straight from the top shelf.

Dark Autumn (Headman Robi Insinnia remix)
Dark Autumn (Headman Robi Insinnia instrumental)
Review: Surfacing from the back streets of greater Mancunia, mystery artist Belly arrives with the first record on their new Belly Dance label. With little more information to go on, let's focus on the music with the two original tracks from Belly making for interesting listening. Lead cut "Dark Autumn" is a slow beat sleaze production dominated by the vocals, big kicks and heavy synths that would go down well late into the night at Horse Meat Disco. "Farewell" is equally hard to pin down, taking on a more overtly hip hop style and is packed thick with textural and sampled detail. On the flip Rob Insinna turns in two New Beat style remixes of "Dark Autumn" that will appeal to the more adventurous selectors.

Review: Belgian legend Benjamin Lew gets some light shone on him here by Stroom. They draw together highlights of his 1982 album "Douzieme Journee: Le Verbe, La Parure, L'Amour" which was produced with Tuxedomoon's Steven Brown and also include a rare compilation cut. Curious ambient with snaking leads and hymnal chords are evident on numbers such as "Il Les Quitta A L'aube", and more dark and rhythmic experimentation on the excellent "Dans Les Jardins." "A La Recherche De B" conveys a sense of creepiness and unease that you might associate with covert research projects and rounds out a fascinating work.

Review: London's Henri Bergmann makes her full debut on Berlin institution Watergate Records here with the Mind Control EP. The Automatik head is said to have created these tracks during the lockdown, and sees her utilise her voice on the productions. The title track is a collaboration with label stalwart Biesmans that's an absolutely euphoric serving of electro-pop, followed by the hypnotic dark disco journey of 'Our Time Has Come', then be bedazzled by the neon-lit Italo influenced groove of 'We Just Keep On Going' featuring Wennik on the vocoder. Over on the flip, some great remixes come from Stephan Jolk and Echonomist remix.

Review: So far, the Clan Destine imprint has been responsible for some of the most daring noise-techno infusions of the last three years, and their Clan Destine Traxx offshoot has brought up some straight up killers thanks to the like of Tuff Sherm, Torn Hawk et al. This latest remix package of the Bestial Mouths LP comes heavy with new faces - possible aliases of various established US artists - who waste no time in getting their point across: a cold, foreboding mixture of power electronics, EBM and techno. The A-side is all muddy, swamped distortion and grainy percussion, with our top pick being the Nightchilde remix of "Cloaked". As for the B-side, things take a turn for the dancefloor, and it's Funerals' re-wiring of "Faceless" which really shines through thanks to one hell of a bassline gargle, but Dalhous' version of "Movement" is a total breath-taker, where subtle swarms of feedback collide majestically with angelic pads and sunken choir vocals. Outsider house? More like demonic techno...

Review: A repress of Innershades & Betonkust's 2018 new beat sensation 'Forever In Boccaccio!' has long been requested by hardcore record collectors. And now it has become available and has been fully remastered and housed in a new sleeve design, limited to just 300 copies. It was first made, according to the two being it, in January 2017 "under grey Belgian skies," when they had been consuming lots of acid and new beat, which of course shows. The title cut is brilliantly dark and gothic but is backlit by haunting vocal harmonies and underpinned by a menacing bassline. The three other cuts explore similar moods and grooves with great authenticity.

Review: Big reissue here of Biba's classic Italo disco hit 'Top Model.' Originally released back in 1986, it came on the Italian imprint Out Records and was an instant hit in underground clubs. It has remain a much in demand tune ever since and you'll be hard pushed to even find a copy of an OG let alone afford it. It is a glossy, glamours but raw stomper with a great vocal and retro melodies while 'By Night' strips away the vocals. For his part, Flemming Dalum sticks closely to the original but adds new subtle touches to his outstanding take.

Tarzan Loves The Summer Nights
Tarzan
Review: Stupendously rare Italo gem from the criminally under-prolific Trieste-based Big Ben Tribe, this quirky poplet first came our way in 1984 on Gong. Last spotted changing hands for hundreds on auction sites, Dark Entries have done the disco world a favour and licensed a reissue. Untouched and naked in all its 80s glory, the synth patterns, abstract lyrics and arrangement were way ahead of their time and clearly influenced many electronic pop and Balearic bands who followed. Vocals just a bit too much for you? No worries, just flip for the instrumental. Tarzan loves summer nights, and we love Dark Entries for unearthing this utter classic.

Review: Blancmange were a British synth-pop outfit which surfaced out of the late 1970's and thanks to the power of Record Store Day, the infamous Cherry Red imprint has put out their "I Want More" single from their last Semi Detached LP accompanied by a fine remix, indeed! The original is a robotic, interstellar disco tune with one hell of a vocal loop: a ringing, pulsating chant which'll get you singing in no time. London's bass wizard Applebottom is called up for the remix duties and his own version is a militant tech-house rework with a bubbling bassline and some pretty killer percussion work!

Living On The Ceiling (extended version) (5:32)
Review: First released way back in 1982, Blancmange's "Living On The Ceiling" remains one of the most alluring and eccentric of all new wave-era synth-pop cuts, in part because the unusual inclusion of tabla and sitar parts gives it an unusually exotic, mind-altering flavour. This timely reissue includes the original album mix (B1) and '82 12" version (B2), as well as two brand new reworks from the mighty Roman Flugel. The veteran German producer has delivered the goods, first via a deliciously wonky, otherworldly and analogue-rich revision that brilliantly fuses elements of trippy Teutonic techno and raw, turn-of-the-80s New Wave. As you'd expect, his accompanying dub takes the track further in this direction, delivering a deliciously skewed trip into sparse, heavy, early morning territory.

On offer here are five noisy reinterpretations of some serious industrial unclassics. Hamburg's Wosto (of Fallbeil) takes the razor to UK pioneers Nocturnal Emissions and the raw tonal energy of "Bite Them Back". Label boss Kilian Krings appears also, delivering an edit of vintage EBM classic "Nervous Breakdown" by Suicide Commando and also for short lived Dutch trio S.M. Nurse and their grinding minimal synth anthem "Heinwerker". Some great edits on here for the new industrialists.

Review: As per usual, those fiendish folks over at Dark Entries have amazed us once again with yet another barrel of 1980s gold from the depths of the underground. This time it's German new wave band Boytronic who see a reissue, and the EP in question is 1988's "Byllyant", which features the magnificent Plus 8 mix - a shot to the head made up of warm bass tones and hard-hitting drum machine patterns - and also the US mix, which literally sounds like it was made yesterday; for being an '80s EP, Boytronic steered well clear of cheesy and to be honest, they give New Order a proper run for their money. The 1984 mix of "Trigger Track" is a wonderful electro stormer, stamping its fast beats over eerie pads and growling basslines. This would be silly not to recommend! For the diggers.

Review: Royal Wavetable Mellodies & Old TDKs by Mexico baed artist Brainwaltzera is a perfect coming totters of the symphonic, the synthetic, the organic and the electronic. It's a record that could be a lost 70s classic as much as a new school homage to minimalism, experimental ambient and vintage synths. In fact, this is a selection of archive recordings in the artist's characteristically idiosyncratic style that we cannot get enough of. The collection of tracks are gorgeously native and innocent, with wispy melodies and retro keys all smeared and smudged into moving pieces of ambient that are beatless but dynamic.

As usual, the label come through strong, and this time they reissue an italo disco classic by Brand Image (T.Scarfone and M.Scarabelli) originally released in 19983, and representing the genre with flying colours. "Are You Loving?" contains the 1980's in every sense of the word: quirky, melancholic vocals riding over a grainy drum machine beat, and accompanied by massive synth stabs and an inimitable sort of groove - simply lovely. There's an instrumental on the flip just in case you love the sounds but are slightly scared by the power of the vocals...
