Tempa Allstars Vol 8
Cat: TEMPA 104. Rel: 30 Dec 15
Acre - "Messages" (5:59)
Epoch - "The Vile" (4:42)
Cliques - "AUT" (6:30)
Fracture - "Excalibur" (4:37)
Youngsta & Distance - "Track 5" (5:38)
Biome - "Closed Minds" (6:06)
Review: The Allstars compilation series from Tempa has proved a fine litmus test of the UK underground since it was launched in the heady early days of dubstep circa 2003. An eighth volume rounds out Tempa's 2015 business and this broadly diverse selection is proof enough that bass music is in fine health. Following his superb debut LP for Tectonic, Acre opens the doublepack with the stuttered, swung sound design of "Messages", and from here Tempa run the gamut of the UK bass scene. Epoch lays down raw and doomy steppa vibes with "The Vile", Cliques offers up futuristic footwork of "Aut" whilst both Youngsta & Distance and Biome bring the 140BPM heat.

Aden - "Luft"
Aden - "Whip"
Creepy Autograph - "Mind Image Made"
Creepy Autograph - "Back Ally"
Review: Jimmy Edgar's Ultramajic label reaches only it's second 12" and goes conceptual with the first in a series of Metaphysix releases; in Edgar's own words, "reality is based upon thought systems and this is the core of music and vibration, each chapter of the series we will give these ideas to the artists for them to interpret in any way they choose". The debut Metaphysix transmission sees two contributions each from Eden and Creepy Autograph, with the former elusive producer calling shotgun and gracing the A Side with a pair of dubby numbers that have apparently caught the ears of Scuba and Boys Noize. The bleep laden electro cut "Luft" is particularly ace. Down below Creepy Autpgraph resurface after a series of excellent releases on Valentine Connexion and show they've lost none of their class - the stripped back ghetto house of "Back Alley" is great!

Bass Clef - "Acid 8"
Photonz - "The Fire Sower"
Cauto - "Lu-fuki"
Nino - "Midnighters"
Review: Barcelona via Lisbon's Iberian label returns with its first record in well over two years, with the Tax Haven 3 EP, which sees a host of diverse figures contribute a track each. Given the fact that the label's primary focus - dubstep - has waned even further since its last record, it's perhaps unsurprising that the tracks featured take things in new directions. Punch Drunk's Bass Clef contributes "Acid 8", a sinister track displaying his trademark modular sound that could as easily be halfstep D&B as it could slow moving house, while "Photonz" deliver "The Fire Sower", a crazed piece of electro that sounds like Drexciya drunk at an illegal '90s UK rave. On the flip Cauto's "Lu-fuki" provides some sizzling Dam-Funk style synthwork and Nino's "Midnighters" goes retro synth dubstep. An impressively diverse package.

Cong Burn 02
Cat: CB 02. Rel: 12 Mar 18
BFTT - "Public/Private"
Lack - "Absent"
Chekov - "Celeste"
Howes - "Untitled"
Review: Cong Burn made a mighty splash with its first release, clearly flaunting the kind of wares you'd expect to hear from Livity Sound alumni or other such esteemed techno renegades. The second installment is no slouch either, featuring a new cast of crooked creators offering up their wares for the modern mutant dancefloor. BFTT has a weighty low end thrum powering "Public/Private", while Lack takes things in a scuffed and nimble direction. Chekov pushes out into more experimental pastures with the broken beats and displaced sound design of "Celeste" and Howes creates a wonderful strain of mystical deep house for darkened souls. Each one of these tracks is loaded with flair and personality, yards ahead of your average generic knock offs and presenting something with real merit to the convoluted world of dance music.

Scanone - "Gift Of Life" (7:16)
Controlled Weirdness - "Information Society" (5:38)
Meat Beat Manifesto - "Destroy Dub" (3:50)
Review: The second in the BLE-EP series is another nostalgic trip back to the early days of rave. It's jam packed with six of the best breaks, bleeps and bass tunes, prickly analogue drum programming and future leads that immediately place you in a room full of smoke, lasers flashing by and strobes going mental. Bohm's 'Trouble' is a textbook take on this style, while Neil Landstrumm layers up bright melodies and refracts them around a punchy techno framework on 'Body Popper.' Meat Beat Manifesto's 'Destroy Dub' is a wild furry of drums and another gem on an EP full of them.

Cooly G - "Him Da Biz"
Funkystepz - "Vice Versa"
Review: Of all the Decadubs double packs issued as part of Hyperdub's exhaustive 10th Anniversary celebrations it's probably this fifth and final edition most label fans have been waiting for. Why's that? Because it offers you the chance to grip the hallowed Burial production "Lambeth" in your hands, one of a clutch of unreleased tracks from the reclusive producer that have been racking up plays on Youtube for some five years in one form or another. However there's plenty more to sink the teeth of your stylus needle into here, with the label's stated focus on a "celebration of house, garage and techno" resulting in some fine dancefloor moves from Kode9, DVA, Cooly G and a blinding Dorian Concept refix of Martyn.

Sundown (4:19)
Bleak (dub) (4:27)
Review: Earlier in the year, Livity Sound's "reverse" offshoot Dnous Ytivil returned after a two-year absence via a fine collaborative release from Hodge and Randomer. This relatively speedy follow-up is, if anything, even better, with debutant Bristol duo Cando serving up a trio of cuts that fuse typically Bristolian techno rhythms and serious bass-weight with tropical sounds and pleasingly glassy-eyed synthesizer melodies. It's a formula arguably best exemplified by bustling title track "Bleak", whose UK funky-influenced percussive pressure and surging bass-weight is offset by the picturesque quality of the electronic sounds placed on top. That said, the slightly more tribal Afro-tech drums and blissful synthesizer motifs of "Sundown" are also hugely impressive, while closing cut "Bleak (Dub)" is a sparse and heavy soundscape that reminded us of fellow Bristolian Ossia.

Bubbling bass, writhing beats, it's a slinky one. With Snowy on hand for both a special "Vox" and "Dub" version which echoes and teases, the two cuts tickle spots you didn't even know you had. Sting like a "Butterfly"... Hum like a bee.

Capracara - "House Of Dolls"
Palace - "Mandy"
5kinandbone5 - "Make U Understand"
Dubbel Dutch - "B Leave"
Review: It's almost impossible to keep on top of the Unknown To The Unknown release schedule, such is their relentless energy in putting out material across all formats. This UTTU Rec In Effekt! 12" has probably been our most anticipated release from DJ Haus' label though, granting a physical release to a quartet of Trans-Atlantic heaters that have appeared in the digital domain over the course of the last twelve months. It's an all-UK show on the A Side, commencing with the killer "House Of Dolls" from Capracara which fully demonstrates his masterful command of funked out house grooves. A perfectly bumped beat offsets an organ stab drenched in cavernous delay, whilst digital squalls flit around the nether regions. Alongside this, Palace is on a throwback midnite 2-step flex with "Mandy" sounding every bit like the one track Four Tet should have slipped into his Fabric mix. Flipside and West Coast duo 5kinandbone5 mangle up R&B and darkside garage with aplomb on "Make U Understand" whilst the excellent Dubbel Dutch takes the rhythmic template of drum & bass and fuses it with a modern bass mainframe, taking its R&B sample and combining it with icy synth stabs which create a sound much like a Detroit take on bass.

Review: Backed by serious hype and support from Nest HQ, Japanese bass smelter Carpainter unleashes his second EP of 2015 and its 100 per cent thriller: "Digital Harakiri" is a grainy, angular breakbeat track that sits somewhere between Aphex and Freq Nasty. "Fluid Emotion" is a silky 4/4 garage jam with just the right amount of grit on the bottom end. "Milky Well" an insanely funky cut that sounds like the lovechild of Swindle and George Clinton while "Sazanami" brings us to a glossy finale with twinkling arpeggios, FX-twisted vocal shots and feel good chords. Genuinely beautiful.

Review: Carrier's latest release continues his exploration of rhythmic pressure following his work with FELT and The Trilogy Tapes. This trio of kinetic and minimalist sounds sees Guy Brewer expanding on the approach from Neither Curve Nor Edge, stripping down dance forms to their micro-structures. The album focuses intensely on sound, texture and tense atmospheres with predictably excellent results. Tracks like 'Coastal' pulse with faint hardcore energy and muted dub, while 'Wood Over Plastic' deconstructs rhythm across surreal spaces. The closer, 'Locus,' delves into sharp percussion and creeping sub-bass that leaves you wanting more, in a good way.

The Motions (5:16)
Review: Guy Brewer is one of those artists who seems to make gold no matter the alias or stylistic intent. He has previously succeed as both one half of legendary drum & bass duo Commix and also moody techno purist Shifted. Now he is freeing himself of those purism shackles as Carrier and has started his own self titled label to do so. He means business from the off here with 'Into The Habit' a melange of busted rhythms and caustic textures and 'Shading' exploring minimalist drum programming and dramatic synthscapes. The combination of the light and the dark, the heavy with the more deft is intriguing once more on the loopy clatter of 'Still So' while closer 'The Motions' suspends you in some pensive pads while fizzing bursts of noise bring some texture.

Review: We're delighted to be bringing you this one - after a couple of years away, Madam X's KAIZEN label is finally back in business with an updated look and a new wave of sounds from the future. It is the fast-rising Manchester talent of Cartridge that takes the reins here with two superb tunes. 'Banada' is first up with its Eastern-flavoured melodies snaking their way through a vast and cavernous space powered by drilling bass. It's delicious dark room music for the body and head. On the flipside is a collab with Biome that is more sleazy and dirty. The metallic bassline and punchy 808s make it ripe for bass face and gun-finger salutes.

Review: Lank-haired Norse producer Magnus August Hoiberg, better known as Cashmere Cat, signs to the Luckyme label having made his name through Brussels imprint Pelican Fly and a raft of Jersey Club style remixes of LDR, 2 Chainz and Jeremih. A union with the revered Edinburgh label makes perfect sense given the mutated forms of hiphop/club hybridism pioneered by Luckyme over recent years and Cashmere Cat's Wedding Bells EP represents a fine debut. As opening track "With Me" suggests, Hoiberg has an innate talent for snaking club rhythms and delicate melodic, almost poppy touches, whilst "Wedding Bells" is reminiscent of the sort of music Jim Blake was making under the Harmonimix guise. Expect to hear this everywhere!

Review: The Mirror Mirau EP from Pelican Fly's mysterious production star Cashmere Cat was a rather impressive debut release that sounded equally appropriate for the club and the bedroom - four tracks of exemplary R&B/electronica creativity that were filled with organic sounds and sexy synth vibes. Here we find some key Ed Banger players getting mucky with the parts; Feadz & Kito serve up a sassy slice of future garage, Busy P gets fresh with the old school pitched down piano chords, Canblaster presses the sexy button and finally G Vump goes all jazzy and allows more of the organic nature of the original shine over the weighty kicks.

Review: Cashmere Cat made quite the splash when he dropped Wedding Bells on LuckyMe back in 2014. In its deft balance of pristine hyper-pop, plaintive classical piano and sneaker-scuffed bass, 'With Me' confirmed his maximalist, misfit appeal in the fine tradition of LuckyMe artists, by going on to work with top tier artists like Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Sophie, Major Lazer... the list goes on. This small but perfectly formed EP captures a moment in music perfectly, when the past decade of stylistic splintering had left the playing field pleasingly wide open and its more than deserving of a repress ten years on.

Review:  Having already turned more than a few heads with a strong appearance opposite Tuff Sherm on a split disc for Plastic World, Australian producer Cassius Select makes a fully-fledged outing on Unknown To The Unknown with a very savvy blend of sharp-edged club wreckers in line with DJ Haus's own riotous vision of 21st century dance music. "Cross Strut" places the emphasis on clattering percussion locked into a hard funk, while "Crook" lets a few more atmospheric splatters of melody and reverb into the twitchy mix. The ideas come flying thick and fast without losing sight of the dancefloor, just like all good UTTU releases.

Review:
DJ Autumn's Banoffee Pies label is one of the most hyped out there. Each release sells out - usually on pre sales alone - and very much defines the sharp end of the current garage sound. Cassius Select is up now with another fusion of UK sounds from final beats to skeletal garage. 'Born To Defence' is a rhythmically prickly tune with cloning hits and bell sounds and 'Honda Civic' is all inner city menace and unsettling bass hits. 'Sicko Groove' churns up a load of different hits, clatters, smears and smudges into a real melon twister and 'Guia Circuit' brings the filth.

"Essence" boils us right down to a bouncy UK funky-style bashmenty beat as we're bombarded with rubber ball bass licks, "Hype Hour" twists in vocal in the most demonic ways over a set of vibrant chimes and bubbling beats while "Shaolin Soccer" closes the show with skipped-out two-step and iced out atmospheres that wouldn't go amiss on a label like Samurai. Review: The giant energy of an early 90s rave meet classic hip hop beats straight from the dusty SP-1200 on Cazion's debut record:

"Rap music runs very deep in my veins; by the time I was fourteen I was making mixtapes and obsessing over the huge, funky, bombastic sounds of late eighties hip hop," says Cazion's Photocall. "I still aspire to capture the snap and the bigness of the kind of sound you'd hear on a Paul C record, a Public Enemy record, and I still use the the same machines those guys used to do it," he adds, gesturing at the wealth of vintage gear cluttering his retro spaceship of a studio, The Escape Pod. "When you hear the first bar of this song, you might expect some dude with a cameo flattop to start rhyming about the Benzi Box in his Suzuki Samurai at any moment."

"We wanted to take it all the way," adds Maheras, from the depths of a glowing neon couch. "Some people shy away from using certain sounds because they're afraid to sound cheesy - but they forget to have fun. I'd rather have so much fun making a song that I forget to worry."

"Like the dancers we sampled," Photocall agrees. "The vocal snippets are from a British video that was shot on New Years Day, 1993, the morning after a giant rave. It's the middle of some field, people are pushing their cars out of the mud, and this one couple is still dancing their asses off. They don't care that there's no music playing; they're totally in the zone. My man DJ Duane happened to send us the link as we were programming the drums for this record, and something just clicked. We knew we were making this record for those two crazy kids, wherever they are. Possibly still in that field."

Golden Donna - "Soft Escape II"
Review: It's rare to get one's head utterly spun by a fresh approach that has no interest in being experimental, but with "Shackles" Cc has managed just that on this release for CGI. Somewhere in between techno, UK Funky and broken beat, the second track on this record hits tough and eminently danceable, the catchy R&B vocal hook worked without getting irritating, the bass steeped in soundsystem culture and the drums rough and ready. "Calvino Italo" is no less stunning, this time focusing on the beat and making it shift and shimmy to a devastating end. On the flip Golden Donna brings a grainier version of the future, letting distorted dub chords strain into the red and sharing the penchant for stammering drums, rounding out an utterly essential slab of wax.

Review: Bristol selector and producer Shanti Celeste is back on her own Brstl imprint - which she runs out of the Idle Hands shop located on Gloucester Road - with a deep yet jacking two-tracker in the label's familiar style. Just as a side note, the Brstl label has been responsible for bringing forth some of the most interesting artists to come out of the city over the last three years...names like Rhythmic Theory or October ring any bells!? In any case, "Moods" is a grizzly house nugget complete with piano keys and a jazzy kinda feel, while "Lumi" is darker, more lamenting and worthy of a dimly-lit dancefloor. Top!

Review: WNCL Recordings is the creative hub for Bob Bhamra's West Norwood Cassette Library project - now almost five years old and always specialising in the more intricate and subtle ends of the house spectrum. Over the years, however, several guests have appeared on the label such as Kevin McPhee and Ekoplekz and this time it's up to newcomer-probably-under-alias, CEO, to make his way down to South London. The Major Edits EP, as the title suggests, is a mashup of high-tek, sound futurism mostly all based beyond the 130bpm mark. The opener, "Screeching", is a fast-paced jungle burner with stripped synths and bouncy kick going off left-right and centre. The rest of the EP follows in a similar vein, where tracks like "Loud" are a truly sublime blend of hardcore, techno and jungle. An ode to rave and a wonderful addition to Bhamra's catalogue.

Maje
Review: The re-born R&S Records imprint has gone from strength to strength over the past 18 months. Against all the odds, the former Belgian rave behemoth has become a 'must-check' for fans of forward-thinking bass music and twisted, floor-friendly electronica. Here, they continue that theme, with R&S office boy Dan Foat resurrecting his partnership with pal Nathan Boddy as The Chain. Last time out (2009) they were making techno; nowadays they're laying down wonky medieval rave music that layers harpsichord samples on top of dubstep beats. It's pretty tasty. B-Side "Maja", a kind of Joey Beltram-on-speed rave banger that could have dropped on R&S in '92, is humungous, too.

Sidewalk Safari (Dan Carey dub mix)
Met Before (The Field mix)
Review: New York duo Chairlift return to the excellent Young Turks label with this 12" sporting remixes of their infectious synth-wave pop sounds from an illustrious cast of producers. Hivern duo John Talabot & Pional share the A Side with lauded Drum & Bass legend Photek; the former opting for washy reverbs, muffled vocals and synthesised piano keys backed by a wall of inspiring synth pop noise, whilst the latter further demonstrates a recent embrace of classicist dubstep aesthetics. Martyn's "Crystal World" edit of "Sidewalk Safari", geared for the dancefloor, will have the indie kids running to the DJ for a track ID, whilst Dan Carey's lo-fi "dub mix" will sound more familiar through the use of smothered guitar licks. The Field closes the remix EP with a cut up and stuttered mechanic rework of "Met Before".
