Review: Henri Bergmann and Wennink's Guardian Angel marks an impressive debut on Crosstown Rebels, delivering a track that expertly fuses melody with depth. Bergmann's knack for sculpting rich, atmospheric landscapes is matched by Wennink's haunting vocals, creating a piece that feels both expansive and intimate. It's the kind of collaboration that hints at a shared vision without ever losing individual identity. The original track opens with textured percussion, slowly unfurling into an emotive soundscape as Wennink's vocals hover above like an ethereal guide. There's a melancholic undertone, but it's balanced by an uplifting drive, showcasing their ability to blend light and dark seamlessly. The remixes take Guardian Angel into uncharted territories. Stimming strips things back, opting for a more minimalist approach that sharpens the focus on rhythmic intensity, while his subtle use of effects amplifies the track's ethereal quality. It's a remix that feels lean but still full of intent. Hardt Antoine, on the other hand, plunges deeper into the shadows, pushing the bassline forward and letting synths stretch into eerie, sci-fi realms. His reworking is darker, stranger, and ultimately a satisfying close to the EP. With this release, Bergmann and Wennink add another strong entry to the Crosstown Rebels roster, proving that their partnership is one to keep watching.

Review: Rising British duo Black Girl/White Girl are back with a new release this week on Posthuman's Balkan Vinyl. Karin and Ty have been earning their stripes lighting up dancefloors with their energetic style dipping into techno, house, disco, electro, and rave territories. This one is titled 777 Squadron. It features the mesmerizing jack of 'Phaeses', the minimal acid wiggle of 'Flaming Dragon' and over on the flip the thunderous warehouse stomp of the title track.

Review: As the current minimal sound further branches out into new, funkier shades of tech, labels like NCSS are surfacing left, right and centre, and what a pleasure it is to see the scene evolve so well. The crew launch their first EP with a collaboration across four tunes, each one of them offering its own shade of electronics. "Box Of Frogs", by Bowyer, opens the A-side with a nutty sequence of grainy beats and a funky-ass bassline with a dark twist, followed by Tjin's more stripped back burner, "Xoi2". "Mocki" from POM is deeper, more meditative, and offers something jazzier, whereas Will Do's "Inori" goes for the Balearic approach, entering a dreamy world of ice-cold pads and soulful atmospherics. Lush.

Review: This is a superb various artists' collection that get back to the roots of several sounds from dub and reggae to garage and house. All four gems are guaranteed future classics that tick all the right boxes while also offering up something fresh. Da Elusive Ganjaman opens up with 'Da Return' which has acoustic Spanish guitars and slamming beats, Wodda then offers the silky vocal garage house of 'Don't Mind Me' and Main Phase gets naughty with the filthy bass and sirens of 'Childish.' Last of all, Silva Bumpa's 'Body Right' has pitched up r&b vocals to die for over darker low ends. A top EP with something for all.

Review: Berlin's Subtil imprint returns with a new split EP titled Zerno, featuring French minimal expert Doubtingthomas and Siberia's Wyro (Engineer Records). The pair collaborate once again after last year's Unten EP for Metroline Limited. The title track is a long, low-slung and trippy affair that's aimed squarely at the afterhours dancefloor. On the flip we have two more offerings: the rolling, sunny tech house of 'Bloom' which will mix well with you Mulen records, followed by the slo-mo psychedelia of 'Prilivi' which will come in handy during that ambient set you've been eager to play one day.

Review: Parisian producer Jeff The Fool often leans towards the jazzy deep house sounds his city has long been known for. Here he links with Wilt for a new EP on The Chaud that does just that. 'I Said No' is a heavy house cut steeped in US traditional styles, with a libidinous vocal and fat bassline. 'Body & Soul' is a well swung deep house groove with a carefree attitude and 'Vol 334' has more lively drum programming but still a nice warm, scuffed up and intimate feel. The don DJ Deep remixes 'I Said No' into yet another lovely deep house grove.

Review: Scriptum say they have been working on this latest 12" for almost a year. It finds label regulars Komey & Wyro kick things off with 'Everything Else.' It's a moody tech cut with slapping hits and gremlins in the machines. D I N's 'Submerged' is a more dubby, smooth, spaced out cut for the late night hours. Direkt then ups the ante somewhat with the prowling loop menace of 'Creeping'. Last of all is Kame 2's 'You'll Be Free' which is another silky sound built from fluid pads and liquid grooves. All four of these are well-designed and fresh takes on minimal house.

Review: Aterral Limited has taken things slowly to start with but that's fine because the quality of the label's first few releases has remained high. Carlo is behind this one and opens up the EP with 'Hungover', a tune that features Black Loops, who has previously released his own EP on the label. It's lithe, funky deep house with silky synth work and classic drums. 'Lelazo' (feat Emanuele Barilli) carries on down the same path but this time has a darker bassline and more garage tinged skip in the grooves. On the flip side things slow down to a sunset sound on 'Maison' (feat Hauke Freer) and 'Poops' Feat O is a tight, well swung bumper with jazzy keys. Robust and emotive house music from front to back, then.

Review: Parisian imprint HedZup has spent the last five years offering up a mixture of compilation-style 12" singles - many pressed to vibrantly coloured, patterned wax - and split EPs featuring a pair of producers. Their latest release sits in the latter camp, with each of the label co-founders showcasing their personal production styles. Mancini offers up 'A Merman', a rubbery, bouncing, warming and bass-heavy chunk of contemporary tech-house that's subsequently given a darker, creepier treatment by remixer Sepp. Wlad's 'Lotus' combines more elastic and bumpy beats with UKG organ notes and the spacey sonics of early UK tech-house. The accompanying Youandewan remix is a touch tougher and stranger, though it does make great use of Wlad's killer bassline and intergalactic electronics.

Review: For the label's latest 12", Hedzup has offered crewmembers Mancini and Wlad a side each on which to showcase their wares. Mancini steps up first, laying down the becalmed bounce of "Jijijaja". This is classic late night fare that sits somewhere between European tech-house and Chez Damier style U.S deep house. Cab Drivers provides the remix, beefing up the beats and bass on a slightly more driving but no less melodious interpretation. Wlad takes over on side B, offering more metallic sounding percussion and some pleasingly wavy riffs on tech house/deep house fusion cut "Camel Toe". With its' loose, bustling percussion and booming bassline, Swoy's remix sits somewhere between DJ Sneak and Rob Mello.

Review: The mighty Lempuyang label returns with its annual compilation series, again this year split over two superb 12"s. Both of them feature a remastered track from the vaults and in the case of this EP that is the hotly in-demand 'Dubby Plug' by W Moon which is a potent, kicking dub techno cut freshly remastered for 2024. ElsewhereHydergine's 'Ultraviolet' is soulful Detroit-inspired machine music and Dubrovnik UK's 'Waves' fizzes with static electricity. Review: Limo Trax wind down the tinters and shoot us a knowing look through the Wayfarers, as their latest procurement in slick minimal house and techno blares out the limo stereo. This latest addition to their colours series comes in verdant green, and corrals the talents of Milion, Exonym, Dombee and Wodda, all of whom lay down a clacking sonic technic each. 'Tuin Van Bret' exposes the vibe with beeping chords and an injurious party-starting film dialogue sample, as swarthy, silly excitable funk ensues. 'Hagring' marks the A2 with a "gimme dem" sample and moody swells, while 'Brixton' pays homage to the legendary Lambeth area with a speed garage distributary, reminiscent of Serious Danger's earliest movements in the sound. 'Dark N Stormy' perfects this speedy trend, adding expulsive breaks and oozing licks between the four-by-fours.

It's a various artist affair that welcomes some new names (to us) to the scene and first to go and first to impress is Moray. 'Lujuria Universal' is full flavour tech with punchy kicks and driving, fizzing bass to get clubs going. Natural Goofy brings twitchy cosmic unease to his hurried 'You Are Alone' then Len Lewis takes things into more physical realms with the loopy tech and astral basslines of 'The Emperor Strikes Back'. It is left to Will Vickers to close down and he does so with the freewheeling and turbocharged house of 'Arf Tone.'
