Hip Hop/R&B
What's Happening (3:45)
Back In The Game (4:51)
Review: This split single pairs two hip-hop legends for a compelling blend of styles. On Side-1, 'What's Happening', unites Method Man and Busta Rhymes over a soulful piano-driven beat, delivering charismatic flows and undeniable energy. Their chemistry crackles as the track bridges classic Wu-Tang grit with Busta’s rapid-fire dynamism. On the Side-2, an exclusive mix of 'Back In The Game' collides with the instrumental of 'House Of Flying Daggers', creating a hypnotic reimagining. The intricate production layers cinematic depth under sharp lyricism, offering a fresh perspective on both tracks. This release shines as a celebration of lyrical mastery and innovative production, giving fans of both Wu-Tang and boundary-pushing hip-hop plenty to savor.

Back In The Game (4:49)
Review: Taken from the album Black Gold, this 7" single comes on limited edition white vinyl and offers up the superb 'What's Happenin'' featuring Method Man and Busta Rhymes on the A-side. It's a beat-driven workout with funk in the drums. The B-side offers an exclusive and rather more stripped-back mix of 'Back in the Game' with Ron Isley, Inspectah Deck, Method Man, GZA, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah all seamlessly blended with the instrumental of 'House of Flying Daggers.' It's not often you get so many iconic collaborations all on one record which is why it is such a big hitter.

Review: The funky and physical beats of 'What's Happenin' are originally from the album Black Gold with Method Man and Busta Rhymes. It's a dusty gem with kilelr bars and a real hip-hop masterpiece. The B-side offers a stripped-back exclusive mix of 'Back in the Game' which blends Ron Isley, Inspectah Deck, Method Man, GZA, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah with the instrumental of 'House of Flying Daggers.' Combining so many legendary artists on one record makes this an essential release. Pressed on green vinyl with only 100 copies available, this is sure to prove a collector's item.

Pan Sonic Youth (Sampledica dub) (3:29)
Review: The legendary German producer behind such mythical techno names like Acid Jesus and Alter Ego delivers an eclectic exploration of electro and acid with 'Pan Sonic Youth'. This release shows his ability to create genre-bending soundscapes and analogue textures, each of the four mixes offering a unique perspective on the original. Side-1 starts with the acid version which is a deep, addictive dive into heavily drenched acid sounds. Harnessing the spirit of 80s electro, its bold, immersive energy demands attention. The original version follows, delivering strong electro rhythms and a sharp, immediate impact. Both versions are sure to wow any listener. Side-2 opens with the drone version, where heavily processed analogue tones create a dense, experimental atmosphere. Jorn's 'Thee Church Ov Acid House Balearic Mix' reimagines the track as a chill-out anthem, blending beachy vibes and lounge influences while retaining the original's spirit. Closing the release, the 'Sampledica Dub' deconstructs the original into abstract fragments, offering a more avant-garde, interpretive take. Wuttke's ability to create so many different versions of one track is truly amazing in itself, and add the extra demension that a true veteran brings and you have one unmissable piece of vinyl.

Originally released in 1982 and co-written by Leon Ware and Zane Grey, with production by Webster Lewis, the track has been a staple in modern soul music. I'm A Man (3:16)
Harpsichord Shuffle (3:55)
Review: Side-1 kicks off with a raw and funky garage band jam that perfectly captures the spirit of 1967. With its dynamic energy, the track blends elements of jazz, rock, funk and blues, creating an exciting, soul-infused experience. The rhythm section drives the track with relentless energy, while the soulful melodies and infectious groove make it a standout piece. The mix of surf rock and mod influences gives it a timeless, gritty edge that resonates with both vintage and modern listeners. Side-2 takes a more experimental turn with a unique jam laden with saxophone and rich instrumental textures. The track's experimental nature is underscored by its unconventional structure, utilizing the harpsichord to create a distinctive, jazzy vibe. The saxophone adds a layer of depth, intertwining with the rhythm to produce a mood that's both introspective and lively. This track offers a refreshing, avant-garde twist that contrasts beautifully with the raw energy of the opening side.

Review: This tasty new 7" from Charly has been compiled and annotated by DJs Richard Searling and Dave Evison. It is part of a series that is celebrating Mr M's Golden Anniversary and marks five years in the game. On one side is Sandy Wynns's 'The Touch Of Venus' and on the flip is The Furys (sadly not the family of former lineal world heavyweight boxing champion Tyson, because that would be fun) with 'I'm Satisfied With You' which is not exactly a hugely ringing endorsement of love but a superb sound none the less.

Review: Czech deepsmith WZ is all leng and 'No Skeng' these days as he lays down a massive five piece on Innamind. His second appearance on the label this year, this EP follows 'Cold Blooded/Yeah' with a whole gamut of wrigglers and vibe-outs. Highlights range from the squelchy freeform bassline modulations and Zed Bias style swing on 'Blaze Up' to the pulsating meditative rumbles of 'Late Night Tip'. What a range, what a spread. WZ definitely knows his ABCs right here.

Review: The debut recording from The Ancients, an intergenerational trio featuring Isaiah Collier, William Hooker and William Parker initially formed to play Milford Graves' Mind Body Deal exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. This double LP captures the raw energy and improvisational brilliance of their live performances, showcasing the enduring legacy of free jazz. Collier's tenor saxophone soars and wails, drawing on influences from John Coltrane to Charles Gayle, while grounding his explorations in a deep understanding of structure and form. Hooker's drumming is a force of nature, a whirlwind of polyrhythms and explosive energy that pushes the music to its limits. And Parker, a true legend of the avant-garde, anchors the music with his virtuosic bass playing, creating a foundation for the trio's improvisational flights. The music is both a celebration of the rich history of free jazz and a bold exploration of new sonic territory. The Ancients tap into the spirit of their predecessors, channeling the energy of the Cecil Taylor Unit and the Ornette Coleman Trio, while forging their own unique path, the power of collective improvisation looming large throughout.

Review: Nick Cave and Warren Ellis's soundtrack for the National Geographic documentary about an imagined 2033 manned mission to Mars feels like a sketch for the atmospheric soundscapes of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' 2016 album Skeleton Tree. Both works inhabit the same dark-hued, super-charged sonic atmosphere. Cave's cinematic music, enriched by Ellis's imaginative contributions, explores a wide range of sounds: distorted guitars in 'Space X,' sibylline keyboard arpeggios in 'Space Station,' and vast synthesized swathes evoking space's void. 'Planetarium' features soulful drones and synthesized strings, creating anticipation and stillness. With few vocals, this ambient soundtrack is perfect for chilling out and daydreaming. It's a departure from the intense emotions of the Bad Seeds, reflecting Cave's inward focus after personal tragedy. Unlike many soundtracks, this one stands apart, integral to Cave and Ellis's collaboration, and can be savored without thinking about Mars. Now available on vinyl for the first time!

Review: Paul McCartney's long-lost project, One Hand Clapping, is finally seeing a near-complete release 50 years after its inception. Filmed and recorded over four days in August 1974 at Abbey Road Studios, the sessions feature a new Wings lineup with Paul, Linda, Denny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch, and drummer Geoff Britton, alongside Del Newman and Howie Casey. The album includes recent hits like 'Live and Let Die,' 'Band on the Run,' and 'Jet,' alongside Beatles classics 'Let It Be,' 'The Long and Winding Road,' and 'Lady Madonna.' Denny Laine covers the Moody Blues' 'Go Now' and Paul revisits 'Maybe I'm Amazed' and the Tin Pan Alley classic 'Baby Face.' Previously unreleased, except for a few tracks scattered over the years, One Hand Clapping is now available as beautiful packages with exclusive solo performances recorded in the backyard of Abbey Road. This release is a nostalgic treat for McCartney and Wings fans that harnesses the band at a unique moment in their storied career.

Review: This new one from our favourite US ambient outlet takes the form of a selection of long-form compositions from artists who are close to the label. As such it's a perfect reflection of its signature sound - deeply immersive soundscapes, slowly shifting synths and meditative moods made with a mix of hardware tools, guitars, pedals and even baritone vocals. It's named after a Norwegian term for warmth and intimacy, which certainly plays out from the evolving loops of 'A Whisper' to the textured melancholy of 'Canaan' and the reverberant drift of 'Coronation Ring'.

Review: Tribe 2000 is a powerful celebration of Phil Ranelin's prolific career, featuring the Tribe Records founders, Ranelin on trombone and Wendell Harrison on saxophone. Recorded in 2000, this album brings together the core of the influential Detroit label, as Harrison sought to reconnect with Ranelin while incorporating a talented ensemble of seasoned musicians to enrich the arrangements. Four of the five compositions are penned by Ranelin, showcasing the innovative spirit that characterised Tribe. Wendell Harrison, known for his self-directed approach to music, co-founded the legendary Tribe label in the 1970s and established Rebirth Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to jazz performance and education. His collaborations with notable artists like pianist Geri Allen and saxophonist James Carter underscore his significant impact on the jazz community. Born in Indianapolis, Ranelin's early influences shaped his journey through Detroit's jazz scene before he moved to Los Angeles, where he continued to thrive alongside luminaries like Freddie Hubbard. Together, Ranelin and Harrison's Tribe 2000 exemplifies their enduring legacy in jazz music.

Review: Guadeloupean artist Celia Wa's debut album Fasade is a sonic journey that transcends borders and time while carrying echoes of a rich past and the promise of a bold future. The path to Fasade has been preceded by three fine EPs and more so than ever here, Celia's determination and powerful Creole identity shine through. With raw emotion and powerful interpretation, she conveys stories in Creole, overcoming pain and anger to emerge resilient. Joined by Xavier Belin, Kristof Negri, and David Walters, they create a sound that blends Caribbean rhythms with global rhythms and urge soulful liberation and full-body movement.

Review:  Waaju & Majid Bekkas's Alouane exemplifies the power of collaboration during challenging times. As bringing overseas artists to the UK grows increasingly difficult, this record bridges cultural and generational gaps while capturing the vibrant energy of live collaboration post-Covid-19. Conceived by Waaju bandleader Ben Brown, the album features his expansive arrangements of traditional Gnawa songs and blends Bekkas' musical prowess with Waaju's signature grooves and trippy delays. Bekkas, a key figure in Moroccan Gnawa music, had never collaborated with a UK band until this project. Alouane, meaning "colours" in Arabic, reflects the seven integral colours of Gnawa music, each invoking different spirits.

Review: Los Angeles-based composer Tashi Wada steps out with his long awaited debut album, What Is Not Strange?, and a fine first solo outing it is too. It is by far his most ambitious and widescreen work to date and it comes laden with plenty of emotion as a result of the fact that it was written and recorded over a period that encompassed the death of his father and the rather opposite feelings of experiencing the birth of his daughter. As such Wada reflects inward to explore various themes including being alive, mortality and finding one's place in the world. His unique song based expressionism goes from ecstatic to denser forms and starker contrasts. It is a wonderful experiment and immersive listen.

Review: In the 1960s, The Wailers, including Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer, recorded their first songs under Coxsone Dodd. By 1966, members had begun to leave and both Constantine Walker and Rita Marley came in as replacements. During the ska era, they were less consistent than peers like The Paragons and Maytals but by 1967 and now working with producer Clancy Eccles, they began developing their distinct sound with tracks like 'Bend Down Low' and 'Hypocrites'. They later collaborated with hitmaker Leslie Kong which led to their 1971 album The Best of The Wailers. Featuring solid rhythms and heartfelt harmonies, it's now regarded as a classic and comes newly issued on CD.

Review: Reggae is a genre that always existed on 7" in the early days. However, this album from The Wailers changed that as the first to ever be recorded as a full-length album. The Best Of The Wailers was actually their very first and it was recorded before their involvement with Lee Perry. It didn't drop until 1971 and showcased the group at the peak of their soulful powers. Each of the tunes is deceptively simple but impactful with plenty of memorable harmonies between Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. The sounds are perfectly raw and undercooked to give them an authentic and emotive edge and many of the tracks remain classics to this day.

The horn and string arrangements enhance his intricate lyrics, painting a vivid picture of the lonely streets of New York City at night. While 'Closing Time' captures solitude, The Heart Of Saturday Night reveals the broader landscape of the city, where Waits evokes relatable emotions that resonate deeply with listeners.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

The tenth studio album from Tom Waits, released in 1987 via Island Records, was yet another landmark in a career which, by this point, had already given us a raft of stone cold classics. The last two of those LPs, Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs, certainly swerved expectations, marking a new period in the life and times of an acclaimed jazz and blues man. Taking its name from a track on Swordfish, Frank's Wild Years is actually "Un Operachi Romantico in Two Acts" according to the subtitle, with several songs here taken from a play of the same name which premiered in Chicago a year prior. In many ways, the theatrical side story was an inevitability, with the previous records all pointing in the direction of a gravelly blues-jazz-rock core with a vaudeville, spoken word, and narrative disposition.

To say that Tom Waits' eighth studio album marked a stylistic shift would be like saying winter is markedly different to summer. Having established himself as one of the finest piano-based songwriters of his generation - or any other for that matter - Swordfishtrombones was the first LP from the artist to lay out what was to come. Something very, very unusual, as visionary as it is bizarre, a celebration of the beauty of surrealism and the joy of having fun with music. Whether it's the opening number, 'Underground', and its strange, almost cartoonish chain gang jazz-blues stomp, the quiet keys and solitary vocals of 'Johnsburg, Illinois', or the distorted, compressed electronic jangling and organ riffs of 'Dave The Butcher', within the first few tracks alone you're presented with a vast and varied universe of ideas.

The King Arthur Piano Suite (20:03)
Review: Yessonata sees Rick Wakeman delving into his Yes past, crafting a stunning solo piano suite that intertwines over 30 musical fragments from his time with the legendary prog-rock band. Adapted from a full band and choir arrangement performed at the London Palladium, this CD offers a masterclass in Wakeman's intricate piano playing. Familiar Yes themes, such as those from Awaken, Close to the Edge and Roundabout, flow seamlessly with lesser-known pieces like The Meeting. Wakeman's ability to weave these complex themes into a cohesive piece shines throughout. He effortlessly transitions from iconic intros like Long Distance Runaround to deeper cuts, making the listener's experience both nostalgic and exploratory. Particularly striking are the repeated appearances of Awaken and Close to the Edge, which serve as the backbone of the suite. The second half of Yessonata features the King Arthur Piano Suite, drawing on Wakeman's 1975 album The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. The piece showcases Wakeman's delicate touch and rich emotional depth, elevating these themes to new heights. Recorded on a Steinway Model D, Yessonata exemplifies Wakeman's signature style: a joyous, flowing journey through his greatest works.

Tracks like 'Candifloss' and 'Malcolm's Law' showcase the band's technical skills and their ability to create complex and captivating soundscapes, while 'The Galli' and 'This One is Improvised' offer a glimpse into their free-flowing, improvisational approach. Recorded live with no overdubs, the album captures the band at their most raw and unfiltered, pushing the boundaries of their instruments and their own musical limits.

Review: The newly unearthed Mal Waldron Trio 1970 live recording, officially released with the permission of the Waldron Estate and INA, captures an important moment in the pianist's career resurgence. Recorded at Paris' Palais d'Orsay Hotel during the International Sound Festival and aired on the "Jazz Vivant" radio show, this performance highlights Waldron's revitalised artistry after years of personal struggle. Backed by Christian Vander on drums and Jean-Francois Catoire on bass, the trio delivers a riveting set that exemplifies their deep cohesion. The set opens with 'Rat Now', showcasing Waldron's signature style, with his left hand's rhythmic foundation contrasting against his right hand's sharp, controlled improvisations. Vander's dynamic drumming adds a free-flowing energy to the piece, evoking Monk's influence on Waldron. 'Champs Elysees' follows, blending bluesy melodies with intricate interplay from the trio, while 'Rock My Soul' races forward with vibrant exchanges, particularly between Waldron's forceful left hand and Vander's energetic percussion. The set closes with 'Mount Fujiyama', a serene yet deeply rooted composition inspired by Waldron's visit to Japan. This rare recording is a testament to Waldron's rebirth as an artist and the trio's extraordinary synergy.

Review: The search for The Quest is finally over. This rare album, a true first pressing with the Abbey ring and deep grooves, is now on the shelf and sounding fantastic. It ranks among the top jazz albums, alongside Basra and Far Cry. The Quest is a stunning showcase of soul, musicianship, and composition, with all tunes penned by Mal Waldron, who is a master of sparse, dark, delicate beauty on the piano. Featuring Eric Dolphy on alto and clarinet, Booker Ervin on tenor, Ron Carter on cello, Joe Benjamin on double bass, and Charlie Persip on drums, the ensemble is top-notch. Standout tracks include the mellow and reflective 'Warm Canto' and the energetic 'Status Seeking,' Every tune is unique, making it an album worth revisiting. This reissue rightly restores leadership to Waldron, and with the support of Benjamin and Persip, the complex music, bridging hard bop and avant-garde, is beautifully interpreted. Highly recommended.

Review: Dirt Bike Vacation from Worried Songs Records takes us into the world of Charles 'Poppy Bob' Walker, an amateur guitarist whose mid-80s recordings capture the humdrum of life in Yuma, Arizona. Recorded on a single-track Marantz, the tracks showcase Walker's experimental leanings, with tape delay on 'Granite Bluffs' and 'Goodbye YMCA', and rough overdubs on 'Continuation to Moon Doctor'. Discovered by musician-archivist Cameron Knowler in a dusty Yuma library, these tapes reveal the quiet moments of Walker's daily lifeidriving to work, unwinding at home, or walking the streets. Knowler, who met Walker years earlier without realising it, carefully arranged the tracks to reflect a day in Yuma, blending the mundane with an otherworldly touch. This release is a rare glimpse into both Walker's world and Knowler's own connection to the music.

Released by Atlantic Records in 1959, this album is a testament to Walker's mastery of blues guitar. The album features standout tracks from various sessions, including the electrifying instrumental 'Two Bones and a Pick', showcasing Walker's talent alongside RS Rankin and jazz guitarist Barney Kessel. Review: It's never easy to have a huge breakthrough single and then keep the momentum. But Tom Walker, who shot to massive fame and acclaim through the 2018 hit 'Leave A Light On', seems to have managed it pretty well considering he's gone five years between first record, What A Time To Be Alive, and the September 2024 follow-up, I Am. That's an age in modern music's relentless march and production line gutter ethics. I Am is certainly a case of picking up where things left off on the last long form. The track list is a mixture of hyper emotional main stage acoustic-electronic pop balladry, and quiet piano-vocal solos seemingly poised over your bleeding body, ready to cut heartstrings with a love letter from the loss of your life. Elsewhere, EDM and hip hop-hued uptempo numbers make a similarly big impression. Comparisons to Ed Sheeran still ring true, then, but that's not to say there's nothing new happening here.

Coinciding with an eagerly-awaited global tour in support of the album, the LP is led by the single 'Your Apartment', a riveting indie pop slice of melancholia flaunting the near-monotone but endearing melodies of lead singer Dylan Minnette, as he wistfully broods over a recent infidelity to the tune of stereo'd guitars and uptempo counterpoints. The sound is consistent throughout, bringing an expansive indie ballad sound and merging it with a US pop punk sensibility for an overall sweet development of the band's sound.

Their new record, The Warping, reflects shifting identities, blending memory and future, and exploring younger selves and imagined personas. Written across the Atlantic, from Los Angeles to Glasgow, the album builds enhances their cinematic glam with orchestral musicians, creating a sound both organic and sophisticated. The album addresses personal themes with radical honesty, especially exploring gender dysphoria and envy. Despite a hostile world, especially for queer and trans people, Walt Disco remains resilient.

The story weaves anti-colonial concepts with mythical realist elements, and is sonically brought to life here through atmospheric electronics and prepared instruments. A moody, resonant and ultimately deep groundswell of an album, one that compels the listener to venture ever further into the a spine-tingling heart of darkness.

Though packed with easily recognised hits like 'Everybody Have Fun Tonight' and 'Dance Hall Days', this record also makes light of the band's lesser known favourites while arranging each in curatorial fashion, striking a balance of chronology and versatility: Wang Chung were known for their inspirational garrulity, channelling a seemingly endless array of international stylistic curiosities into their pop music: from Burundi shuffle to electronica to Motown to prog, this mix of both radio hits and deeper cuts makes for a desultory listen, where many influences are often reeled off in the space of a single track.

Review: According to the blurb we have for Doomed Utility, Alex Wang is a firm believer that if a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around, it still makes a massive noise. "Sound existed before there were human ears to hear it," we're told. Not to mention the fact we have now surrounded ourselves with machines and digital tools that immerse us in tones we don't necessarily derive pleasure from. Industrial, frenetic, electronic, post-club, deconstructed and, in moments, straddling that genius-lunatic border. Doomed Utility makes no apologies for its most intense moments, and panders not to our inherent desire to understand and make sense. These are beats, basslines, distorted walls of tormented chaos and abstract moments don't lend themselves to meaning making. Welcome to the future. It's confusing.

Review: This 1979 release showcases a bold, genre-blending approach to r&b and jazz fusion, marked by unpredictability and diverse musical influences. Opening with a Chic-inspired, glossy disco track, the album quickly shifts gears, weaving in elements from Parliament's funky grooves to sophisticated quiet storm vibes and instrumental jazz-funk. The lush, soulful ballads are particularly noteworthy, with one track featuring a caressing, unforgettable vocal performance that became a beloved quiet storm classic. The fusion of styles is impressive, moving seamlessly from upbeat funk to smooth, sensual tracks that remain engaging from start to finish. The overall effort shines with its creativity and range. The album is a testament to the artist's ability to surprise listeners, delivering an eclectic mix of sounds that keep the listener hooked. True to form, the release is a likable and enjoyable listen that stands out for its genre-defying exploration and captivating compositions.

The Making Of "Why Can't We Be Friends?" (22:54)
Review: This special Anniversary Edition celebrates the groundbreaking band War's 55th year with a remastered version of the original album by legendary engineer Bernie Grundman. The iconic, multi-million selling, Billboard 200 Top Ten original has plenty of seminal WAR classics such as 'Low Rider' and the title track 'Why Can't We Be Friends?' and next to this eon disc one is a second disc filled with unreleased tracks from the original sessions, along with unedited mixes that offer deeper insight into the group's creative process. Blending funk, soul, jazz, pop and Latin influences, this genre-defying band has remained a cornerstone of Los Angeles's scene for over five decades.

Review: War's timeless fusion of Latin, jazz, pop and soul resonates anew with the reissue of their seminal albums. Celebrating their 55th anniversary, War's influence remains palpable in American music. Their self-titled debut in 1971 hinted at their distinctive sound, but it was 1971's All Day Music that defined their groove with hits like 'Slippin' Into Darkness' and 'Baby Brother.' The blend of Lee Oskar's harmonica and Charles Miller's saxophone set them apart, crafting unforgettable melodies that feel just as vibrant today. Subsequent classics such as 'Cisco Kid,' 'Why Can't We Be Friends?' and the iconic 'Low Rider' showcase their enduring appeal. Despite later challenges, War's music continues to shine, showing their innovative spirit and enduring legacy on this reissued collection. Not only a great band but a cultural phenomenon to the people of Los Angeles.
